• What to know - for building a form with PHP and MySQL

  Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described? Hope the question isn't too basic/general. Thanks!

• Proper way to build a data Repository in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm working on using the Repository methodology in my App and I have a very fundamental question. When I build my Model, I have a Data.dbml file and then I'm putting my Repositories in the same folder with it.... IE: Data.dbml IUserRepository.cs UserRepository.cs My question is simple. Is it better to build the folder structure like that above, or is it ok to simply put my Interface in with the UserRepository.cs? Data.dbml UserRepository.cs              which contains both the interface and the class Just looking for "best practices" here. Thanks in advance.

• [ASP.NET] A CustomValidator doesn't need to have it's ControlToValidate property set, so...

  Hi: I've just finished reading up on the CustomValidator control and I have a question. In the book I'm reading, it says that a CustomValidator doesn't need to have it's ControlToValidate property set and it gives a few examples of that usage. But in one example where ControlToValidate isn't used, the OnServerValidate function has a timer (5 seconds) that you need to beat by entering your 'answer' into a textbox. If it takes you longer than 5 seconds, the CustomValidator's error message pops up next to the textbox (it's like a timed question/answer game) . How did the CustomValidator know to place the message next to the textbox (there's no association between the two, that I know of)? I wanted to test this, so I put a couple more textboxes on the page and the error message always showed up next to the last textbox I placed on the page. Thanks.

My questions are: How can I convert a min.js file into a clear, easy readable .js file Besides, size(&and speed) are there any other advtages of the min.js file. the js files can be encripted? can js be infected. • Portable Device Path on Windows

  Hey guys I actually got an Windows/Java Question. I've got an plugged in Device which I want to access via Java. Normaly u can access an e.g. USB-Stick via the Drive letter... but this Tablet is displayed by Windows as an "Portable Device"... which means, that the Path is sth. like "Computer\Archos 5S" and there is no Drive letter. I want to access a File on this Device via Java, but I am not able to figure out the correct Path to it. There is a similar Question out there, but without a productive answear. Or is there an other way to access this Device via Java? thanks in advance ripei

• Load balancer - how to write one for a custom application?

  Hi! I've written a simple server application which will run distributed on several machines. My question is how does a network load balancer works, in general? I've heard of round-robin and other algorithms, but what I haven't got answer to is how does the process really goes? In socket terms. The client connects to one of the load balancer machines, asks for a "free-to-connect-to" server and simply connects to it? That's the simpliest way I can think of. .. or, does it use the load balancer as a proxy (that implies that all the NBs must be always connected to the application servers, and data is transferred through them)? It's more of a general question. How would you do this? Thank you all!

• User Management: Managing users in user-defined "groups", database schema and logistics

  I'm a noob, development wise and logistically-wise. I'm developing a site that lets people take a test... My client wants the ability for a user with the roll/privledge "admin" (a step below a super-admin) to be allowed to create users and only see/edit the users that they create... The users created in that "category" or group need some information that their superior provides. For example, I log in as a "manager", I have the ability to invite people to take the test, and manage those people. Before adding those people, I will have filled out a short survey about myself... Right now, the users that are invited will be asked some of the same questions as the manager. I'd like to cut down the redundancy by using the information put into the database by the manager and apply it to the invited users. How do I set up my database to work with this criterion? I'm a little confused about how to do this! Let me know if I can add more details... (This is a mysql and php app)

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)   Douglas Crockford describes the consequence of Javascript inquiring a node's style. How simply asking for the margin of a div causes the browser to 'reflow' the div in the browser's rendering engine four times. So that made me wonder, during the initial rendering of a page (or in Crockford's jargon a "web scroll") is it faster to write CSS that defines only the non-zero/non-default values? To provide an example: div{ margin-left:2px; } Than div{ margin:0 0 0 2px; } I know consequence of this 'savings' is insignificant, but I think it is still important to understand how the technologies are implemented.   History of the problem This is continuation of my previous question How to start a thread to keep GUI refreshed? but since Jon shed new light on the problem, I would have to completely rewrite original question, which would make that topic unreadable. So, new, very specific question. The problem Two pieces: CPU hungry heavy-weight processing as a library (back-end) WPF GUI with databinding which serves as monitor for the processing (front-end) Current situation -- library sends so many notifications about data changes that despite it works within its own thread it completely jams WPF data binding mechanism, and in result not only monitoring the data does not work (it is not refreshed) but entire GUI is frozen while processing the data. The aim -- well-designed, polished way to keep GUI up to date -- I am not saying it should display the data immediately (it can skip some changes even), but it cannot freeze while doing computation. Example This is simplified example, but it shows the problem. I am all ears for real solutions, not some tricks.

  Hi there, I know this is a weird question to ask, but I would like to know if there is any documentation/blog-article out there that explains the architecture of a Website content management system? More particularly, I am interested to learn more about how "widgets" are implemented. I can't remember which system it was that I've seen tis one, but in the "Page Layout view" it had the ability to allow the end user to select a widget (thumbnail gallery, contact form, etc) from a list, and drag and drop it onto custom areas of the page. • how to get latex to hyphenate a word that contains a dash ?

  In a latex document I'm writing, I get an overfull hbox warning because of the word "multi-disciplinary", which happens to be rendered at the end of a line. I can get rid of this particular warning by changing it into multi-discipli\-nary, but the same problem will happen elsewhere, since this word is used a lot in the paper. I'd like to use the \hyphenation{} command instead, but obviously my tentative \hyphenation{multi-disci-pli-na-ry} does not work, because it does not understand the first dash correctly. What incantation do I need to get correct indentation in a word that already contains a dash ? Bonus question: where could I have found the answer to that question myself ?

• Use SQL to filter the results of a stored procedure

  I've looked at other questions on Stack Overflow related to this question, but none of them seemed to answer this question clearly. We have a system Stored Procedure called sp_who2 which returns a result set of information for all running processes on the server. I want to filter the data returned by the stored procedure; conceptually, I might do it like so: SELECT * FROM sp_who2 WHERE login='bmccormack' That method, though, doesn't work. What are good practices for achieving the goal of querying the returned data of a stored procedure, preferably without having to look of the code of the original stored procedure and modify it.

• Parallel Assignment operator in Ruby

  Hi, I was going through an example from Programming in Ruby book. This is that example def fib_up_to(max) i1, i2 = 1, 1 # parallel assignment (i1 = 1 and i2 = 1) while i1 <= max yield i1 i1, i2 = i2, i1+i2 end end fib_up_to(100) {|f| print f, " " } The above program simply prints the fibonacci numbers upto 100. Thats fine. My question here is when i replace the parallel assignment with something like this, i1 = i2 i2 = i1+i2 I am not getting the desired output. My question here is, is it advisable to use parallel assignments? (I come from Java background and it feels really wierd to see this type of assignment) One more doubt is : Is parallel assignment an operator?? Thanks

• Interface and base class mix, the right way to implement this

  I have some user controls which I want to specify properties and methods for. They inherit from a base class, because they all have properties such as "Foo" and "Bar", and the reason I used a base class is so that I dont have to manually implement all of these properties in each derived class. However, I want to have a method that is only in the derived classes, not in the base class, as the base class doesn't know how to "do" the method, so I am thinking of using an interface for this. If i put it in the base class, I have to define some body to return a value (which would be invalid), and always make sure that the overriding method is not calling the base. method Is the right way to go about this to use both the base class and an interface to expose the method? It seems very round-about, but every way i think about doing it seems wrong... Let me know if the question is not clear, it's probably a dumb question but I want to do this right.

• Java2D: Fill a convex rounded polygon (QuadCurves)

  Hi, If I have a QuadCurve like this (+ = node): + + \ ./ +--?? And I fill it in Java 2D the result is something like this: (x = colored) +xxxxxxxxx+ \xxxxxx./ +--?? But I want to color the other side: + + x\ ./x xxx +--??xx xxxxxxxxxxx This succeeds by drawing a rectangle around the curve in the color I want to color the other side and then fill the curve with the background color. But this isn't good enough to fill a convex rounded (based on QuadCurves) polygon. In case of some coordinates for the rectangles (as explained in the trick I used) overlap other pieces of the polygon. Here are two images (the green area is my polygon): So, the question is simple: "How can I color a shape build of curves?" But to the answer will not be simple I think... • Differences between WPF Custom Control Library and plain Class Library?

  I posted a question a few months ago about sharing resource dictionaries across assemblies. It turns out you can do that using the Component Resource Key markup extension. At the time, I could only get it working with a WPF Custom Control project, not with a plain Class Library project. Now I need to use an existing plain Class Library project to host a shared resource dictionary. That means I need to retrofit the Class Library project to support the Component Resource Key markup extension. I have added a Themes folder and a Generic.xaml resource dictionary document to the Class Library project, as well as references to PresentationCore, PresentationFramework, and WindowsBase. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to do the trick. So, here is my question: Other than the above, what does a WPF Custom Control Library project have that a plain Class Library project doesn't? Or, to put it another way, what else could I add to my class library project to get this feature working? Thanks.

NrDetail 1 0 xxx yyyy 1 2 0 aaaa bbbb 2 3 1 hhhhh ssss 0 4 2 eee sssss 0 5 2 jjj hhhh 0 As you can see, NrDetail contain the total of "child record". Unfortunately, i've to create this field... and i would like to write it in my table. So my SQL question is: how to do this type of SQL to write the field NrDetail ? Something like: UPDATE table SET NrDetail= (SELECT COUNT(*) as Total FROM table WHERE MasterID= RecordID) But i think there's some mistake... Thank you in advance !

• ASP.Net: Scheduled tasks in a shared environment.

  This is really an extension of this question, which asked the best way to schedule tasks which need to be performed periodically within ASP.NET in a normal environment. However, I would like to ask this specifically for a Shared Hosting Environment (most of the answers to the previous question would not work in a shared environment as far as I know). One obvious solution would be to have a page which is responsible to performing the tasks on the hosted machine, and call this page from another machine (that you have full control over) using e.g. a windows scheduled task. This is a bit nasty though - are there any better approaches?

• Avoiding sorting in NSDictionary

  I was using NSDictionary and i observed that the objects in the dictionary are sorted automatically with respect to the keys, so my question is how to avoid this sorting , any flag available to set it off, so i get the object in same order i entered. i know u may be thinking what difference it makes in dictionary since we retrieve the value with respect to key, but i am first getting allKeys from which i receive Array of keys , this order is what i need it to be in the order of how i entered just as in NSArray. give your comments if the question is not clear.
