• Is Android AVD's firewall somehow more restricted to real Android firewall?

  I have a TCP server running in AVD and a TCP client running in AVD. AVD client dies because the connection refused so we are doubting some restricted firewall settings. I turned off the firewall in my Debian -laptop with this here but it did not fix the problem so some issue with Android -emulator, intro here. How can I make a TCP connection from one AVD to another AVD in the same laptop in Android? • Simple way to reorder methods of a Java class in IntelliJ?

  Is there a simpler way of reordering methods within a class source file in IntelliJ than cutting and pasting the code manually? Nowadays I often need this while refactoring legacy code, e.g. to move related methods close to each other in the source code. In Eclipse AFAIK there is a view similar to the Structure view of IntelliJ, where I can drag and drop methods around. However, this does not work in IntelliJ and I couldn't find any hints from its help either. I am using IntelliJ 9.0.2 to be specific.

  Hello , I went through local variables and class variables concept. But I had stuck at a doubt " Why is it so that we cannot declare local variables as static " ? For e.g Suppose we have a play( ) function : void play( ) { static int i=5; System.out.println(i); } It gives me error in eclipse : Illegal modifier for parameter i; I had this doubt because of the following concepts I have read : Variables inside method : scope is local i.e within that method. When variable is declared as static , it is present for the entire class i.e not to particular object. Please could anyone help me out to clarify the concept. Thanks.

• Unique keys for Sphinx along three vectors instead of two

  I'm trying to implement thinking-sphinx across multiple 'sites' hosted under a single rails application. I'm working with the developer of thinking-sphinx to sort through the finer details and am making good progress, but I need help with a maths problem: Usually the formula for making a unique ID in a thinking-sphinx search index is to take the id, multiply it by the total number of models that are searchable, and add the number of the currently indexed model: id * total_models + current_model This works well, but now I also through an entity_id into the mix, so there are three vextors for making this ID unique. Could someone help me figure out the equation to gaurantee that the id's will never collide using these three variables: id, total_models, total_entities The entity ID is an integer. I thought of: id * (total_models + total_entities) + (current_model + current_entity) but that results in collisions. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

• Java multi-threading - what is the best way to monitor the activity of a number of threads?

  I have a number of threads that are performing a long runing task. These threads themselves have child threads that do further subdivisions of work. What is the best way for me to track the following: How many total threads my process has created What the state of each thread currently is What part of my process each thread has currently got to I want to do it in as efficient a way as possible and once threads finish, I don't want any references to them hanging around becasuse I need to be freeing up memory as early as possible. Any advice?

  I am attempting to write a Genetic Algorithm based on techniques I had picked up from the book "AI Techniques for Game Programmers" that uses a binary encoding and fitness proportionate selection (also known as roulette wheel selection) on the genes of the population that are randomly generated within the program in a two-dimensional array. I recently came across a piece of pseudocode and have tried to implement it, but have come across some problems with the specifics of what I need to be doing. I've checked a number of books and some open-source code and am still struggling to progress. I understand that I have to get the sum of the total fitness of the population, pick a random number between the sum and zero, then if the number is greater than the parents to overwrite it, but I am struggling with the implementation of these ideas. Any help in the implementation of these ideas would be very much appreciated as my Java is rusty.

• How to add a Page to Frame using code in WPF

  I have a Window where I have put a Frame. I would like to add a Page to the Frame when I click a button that is also on the Window but not in the Frame. There are several buttons in the Window and each click on a button should load a different Page in the Frame. Since I'm a total newbie on this WPF stuff it's quite possible that this approach is not the best and I have thought about replacing the Frame with a Canvas and then make UserControls instead of Pages that will be added to the Canvas. I welcome any ideas and suggestions on how to best solve this. I aiming for a functionality that is similar to the application Billy Hollis demonstrated in dnrtv episode 115. • Django: Determining if a user has voted or not

  I have a long list of links that I spit out using the below code, total votes, submitted by, the usual stuff but I am not 100% on how to determine if the currently logged in user has voted on a link or not. I know how to do this from within my view but do I need to alter my below view code or can I make use of the way templates work to determine it? I have read http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1528583/django-vote-up-down-method but I don't quite understand what's going on ( and don't need any ofjavascriptery).   can someone show a description of the information of what a pgp looks like if only the descriptions were there but not the actual information? something like (i dont remember if the values are correct): packet-type[4 bits], total length in bytes[16 bits], packet version type [4 bits], creation-time[32 bits], encryption-algorithm[8 bits], ...,etc,etc ive tried to understand rfc4880, but its tedious and confusing. so far, i am think i have extracted the 4 i wrote above, but i cant seem to get the rest of the information out. can anyone help? i know i can just find some pgp program, but the whole point of this is to allow me to learn how those programs work in the first place

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!)   Hello, I have followed the basic GWT tutorial for creating a project in Eclipse. Now, I am trying to build off what I learned in the tutorial. I created a static utility class to perform some database connection logic. However, when I try to compile I get: [ERROR] Line 46: No source code is available for type com.sample.server.ConnectionUtil; did you forget to inherit a required module? Where can I put simple classes that I've created on my own? Do they have to be outside the package structure of the basic module, 'com.sample'? Or do I have to specify a whole new module in the gwt.xml file and inherit from that? There has to be something simple I'm missing.

• Can this MySQL subquery be optimised?

  I have two tables, news and news_views. Every time an article is viewed, the news id, IP address and date is recorded in news_views. I'm using a query with a subquery to fetch the most viewed titles from news, by getting the total count of views in the last 24 hours for each one. It works fine except that it takes between 5-10 seconds to run, presumably because there's hundreds of thousands of rows in news_views and it has to go through the entire table before it can finish. The query is as follows, is there any way at all it can be improved?   Hi All, I have a bunch of .eps files (CMYK) that I need to convert to .jpg (RGB) files. The following command sometimes gives me under or over saturated .jpg images, when compared to the source EPS file: $cmd = "convert -density 300 -quality 100% -colorspace RGB ".$epsURL." -flatten -strip ".$convertedURL; Is there a smarter way to do this such that the converted image will have the same qualities as the source EPS file?   Hi I'm really struggling with this query. I have 4 tables (http://oberto.co.nz/db-sql.png): Invoice_Payement, Invoice, Client and Calendar. I'm trying to create a report by summing up the 'paid_amount' col, in Invoice_Payment, by month/year. The query needs to include all months, even those with no data There query needs the condition (Invoice table): registered_id = [id] I have tried with the below query, which works, but falls short when 'paid_date' does not have any records for a month. The outcome is that month does not show in the results I added a Calendar table to resolved this but not sure how to left join to it.   I am looking for a component I can use in Swing that acts as a GUI console which has a text area with scrollbars that can be set to a particular font has an InputStream and an OutputStream that a host application can obtain accepts keyboard input, prints it onto the end of the console text, and sends that input to the InputStream prints the OutputStream text to the end of the console has some kind of FIFO-ish property whereby the amount of text displayed in the console can be limited by automatically discarding the oldest text, when appropriate allows copy (but not cut or paste or any other editing) of the console text to the system clipboard This is kind of like the Console tab in Eclipse. Are there any good libraries that provide this?

  I am fairly new to java and I am trying to find if the file specified in the LINUX path exists. private void validateFilePath(String filePath) { File dir = new File(filePath); if(dir.exists()){ System.out.println("File exists in the path " + dir); setTARGET_IMG_DIR("filePath"); return; }else{ System.out.println("File does not exists in the path: " + dir); return; } } The dir.exists works fine if I give a absolute path from my root like this /Users/yv/Documents/Eclipse-workspace/InputParser/bin/test.txt but if I give a relative path like test.txt or /InputParser/bin/test.txt it says files does not exists. I am planing on creating a jar of this projects and hence this should work with both relative path(files in the same directory) and absolute path from the root. How can I handle this ? Is it possible to search for the absolute path of that file from the root and append it to the file name ?

  Hi experts, Currently we are studying the java based tool which is primararily Reporting tool.It was developed in 2000/2001 period and uses many open source libraries like Apache Avalon/Mx4J.Adaptor/edu.Oswego(java concurrent package) etc. Tool uses jdk 1.3.1 and goal is to upgrade to jdk 1.5.We have also been asked to remove these 'outdated' packages and replace by standard java packages if possible. Unfortunately we have the code available for study but lacks any documentation and really difficult to track the flow(Total number of classes written might be more than 1000) during debugging.   I am working on an AI bot for the game Defcon. The game has cities, with varying populations, and defensive structures with limited range. I'm trying to work out a good algorithm for placing defence towers. Cities with higher populations are more important to defend Losing a defence tower is a blow, so towers should be placed reasonably close together Towers and cities can only be placed on land So, with these three rules, we see that the best kind of placement is towers being placed in a ring around the largest population areas (although I don't want an algorithm just to blindly place a ring around the highest area of population, sometime there might be 2 sets of cities far apart, in which case the algorithm should make 2 circles, each one half my total towers). I'm wondering what kind of algorithms might be used for determining placement of towers?
