Dump Linq-To-Sql now that Entity Framework 4.0 has been released?

The relative simplicity of Linq-To-Sql as well as all the criticism leveled at version 1 of Entity Framework (especially, the vote of no confidence) convinced me to go with Linq-To-Sql "for the time being". Now that EF 4.0 is out, I wonder if it's time to start migrating over to it. Questions: What are the pros and cons of EF 4.0 relative to Linq-To-Sql? Is EF 4.0 finally ready for prime time? Is now the time to switch over?

I have a requirement, like password validations like • At least one Upper case letter • At least one numeric character • At least one special character such as @, #, $, etc. • At least one Lower case letter • password lenght minimum 6 digits • password cannot be same as user name Can anyone provide me a code for this..? flash's "useHandCursor = true" not working for Chrome on Mac

I'm developing a flash game using the default SimpleButton object for my buttons and the hand cursor is working just fine on PC Chrome and Firefox and Safari for Mac, but Chrome on Mac is not letting me swap the default cursor for the hand cursor. I've even set useHandCursor to true for every button I add a click event to and am still getting nothing. We've got no other rollover events, so it's important that the cursor switch. Anyone else run into this and have a lil-fixy / workaround?

Launch .jar files with command line arguments (but with no console window)

I have to do a demo of an application, the application has a server.jar and client.jar. Both have command line arguments and are executable. I need to launch two instances of server.jar and two instances of client.jar. I thought that using a batch file was the way to go, but, the batch file executes the first command (i.e. server.bat [argument1] [argument2]) and does not do anything else unless I close the first instance, in which case it then runs the 2nd command. And also the I do not want a blank console window to open (or be minimized) What I really need is a batch script that will just launch these apps without any console windows and launch all instances that I need. Thanks in Advance! EDIT: javaw: works if I type the command into the console window individually. If I put the same in the batch file, it will behave as before. Console window opens, one instance starts (whichever was first) and it does not proceed further unless I close the application in which case it runs the 2nd command. I want it to run all commands silently SOLUTION: Found the solution, below is the contents of my batch file @echo off start /B server.jar [arg1] [arg2] start /B server.jar [arg3] [arg4] @echo on this opens, runs all the commands and closes the window, does not wait for the command to finish.

How to log all sql going through JBoss datasource with log4j

I've looked at log4jdbc (which does not support datasources), p6spy which seems to be what I am looking for but it has not been updated since 2003 which makes me nervous and lists only JBoss 3.x (we use JBoss 5), and JAMon which seems heavyweight for what I am trying to accomplish (a simple log of all SQL statements running through a JBoss application server). I was hoping that JBoss itself would have a switch to log all the sql (as Websphere does) but I cannot find any documentation for it so that functionality might not exist.

How to restrict text search to a certain subset of the database ?

I have a large central database of around 1 million heavy records. In my app, for every user I would have a subset of rows from central table, which would be very small (probably 100 records each).When a particular user has logged in , I would want to search on this data set only. Example: Say I have a central database of all cars in the world. I have a user profile for General Motors(GM) , Ferrari etc. When GM is logged in I just want to search(a full text search and not fire a sql query) for those cars which are manufactured by GM. Also GM may launch/withdraw a model in which case central db would be updated & so would be rowset associated with GM. In case of acquisitions, db of certain profiles may change without launch/removal of new car. So central db wont change then , but rowsets may. Whats the best way to implement such a design ? These smaller row sets would need to be dynamic depending on user activities. We are on Rails 2.3.5 and use thinking_sphinx as the connector and Sphinx/MySQL for search and relational associations.

TeamCity output artifacts not published to IIS7 folder

I am trying to set up TeamCity to build and deploy an ASP.NET MVC application. I have the setup running successfully on other servers using TeamCity 4.5, but the new server is running TeamCity 6, and I am having trouble getting it to work as expected. TeamCity manages to get the files from source control, and the project (Visual Studio Solution 2008 set to "Build") builds and outputs the necessary files as expected. The problem seems to be with my artifact paths, as the output files are not copied to the website folder. My solution consists of dozen projects, of which the "Web" project is the interesting one in this case. The build checkout directory is C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\7da320cebf0ee541, and the "Web"-project is found in C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\7da320cebf0ee541\Web I have set up my build configuration with the following artifact paths (relative from checkout directory to the folder containing the website): Web/bin=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/bin Web/Content=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Content Web/Views=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Views Web/Media=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Media Web/*.aspx=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging Web/*.asax=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging (I've tried with more ../ just in case, but it didn't make a difference). Issue using Visual Studio 2010 compiled C++ DLL in Windows 2000

I have a very simple DLL written in unmanaged C++ that I access from my application. I recently switch to Visual Studio 2010, and the DLL went from 55k down to 35k with no code changes, and now it will no longer load in Windows 2000. I didn't change any code or compiler settings. I have my defines setup for 0x0500, which should include Windows 2000 support. Has anyone else run into this, or have any ideas of what I can do?

DataReader-DataSet Hybrid solution

My solution architects and I have exhausted both pure Dataset and Datareader solutions. Basically we have a Microsoft.NET 2.0 windows service application that pulls data based on a query and processes additional tasks per record; almost a poor mans workflow system. The recordsets are broader (in terms of the columns) and deeper (in terms of number of records). We observed that DataSet performs much better in terms of performance but runs into contraints as # of records increase say 100K+ we start seeing System.OutOfMemoryException on a 4G machine with processModel configured to run at memoryLimit set to 85. Since this is a multi-threaded app, there could be multiple threads processing different queries and building different DataSets, so we run into the exception sooner in that case DataReader on the other hand works but is a lot slower and hits other contraints; if there is some sort of disconnect it has to start over again or leaves open connections on the DB side and worst case takes down the service completely etc. So, we decided the best option would be some sort of hybrid solution. I'm open to guidance and suggestions. Are there any hybrid solutions available? Any other suggestions

How to properly log out of facebook

Thats the weird part. Out of the 100 times I've logged in and out - I've experienced this problem 5-6 times and 2 of my beta test users have reported the same issue. So when it works- if u click the logout link - u get the facebook popup saying - you being logged out - when it does'nt work - absolutely nothing happens - the page does not refresh - it just sits on that page doing nothing. IE7 is clipping my text. How do I adjust its attitude?

Hi All, A few days ago I re-skinned my website, http://emle.nl. Development of this skin was primarily done using safari, and as expected, it all renders fine using firefox and opera. I've had to make a few small tweaks for IE7, but nothing much, except for one problem... The date indicators for a post are cut off in IE. This problem seems to occur only on nested span tags inside a left floating div. I think I need the floating div's in order to layout text on the left and the right side of the screen. Anyhow, I've summarized it into a small test case, located at http://emle.nl/test.html. In the different browsers, it looks like this. Of course safari and firefox get this right: Do any of you know how to stop IE7 from clipping my text? Edit: I have sort of given up on this problem. My scripts now check for IE7 and feed it somewhat simplified HTML that its limited engine can handle. It works in IE8, so, for now, just the special case for IE7 will have to do...

I have different php output in jQuery-based tabs. This output is formed from database and it consists of several <div>'s. Retrieving Json via HTML request from Jboss server

I am running into a java.net.SocketException: Unexpected end of file from server when I am trying to query some JSON from my JBoss server. I am hoping someone can spot where I am going wrong. How to preserve order of temp table rows when inner joined with another table?

Does an SQL Server "join" preserve any kind of row order consistently (i.e. that of the left table or that of the right table)? Psuedocode: create table #p (personid bigint); foreach (id in personid_list) insert into #p (personid) values (id) select id from users inner join #p on users.personid = #p.id Suppose I have a list of IDs that correspond to person entries. Each of those IDs may correspond to zero or more user accounts (since each person can have multiple accounts). To quickly select columns from the users table, I populate a temp table with person ids, then inner join it with the users table. I'm looking for an efficient way to ensure that the order of the results in the join matches the order of the ids as they were inserted into the temp table, so that the user list that's returned is in the same order as the person list as it was entered. I've considered the following alternatives: using "#p inner join users", in case the left table's order is preserved using "#p left join users where id is not null", in case a left join preserves order and the inner join doesn't using "create table (rownum int, personid bigint)", inserting an incrementing row number as the temp table is populated, so the results can be ordered by rownum in the join using an SQL Server equivalent of the "order by order of [tablename]" clause available in DB2 I'm currently using option 3, and it works... but I hate the idea of using an order by clause for something that's already ordered. I just don't know if the temp table preserves the order in which the rows were inserted or how the join operates and what order the results come out in.

Looking for detailed explanation of Hibernate UserType methods for mutable objects

I am creating a custom UserType class in Hibernate. The specific case is for an HL7v3 clinical document (I work in health IT). It is a mutable object and most of the documentation around the Hibernate UserType interface seems to center around immutable types. I want a better understanding of how and when the interface methods are used, specifically: assemble - why two parameters (one Serializable, one Object)? What is the use case for this method? disassemble - should I just implement this method to return a serializable form (e.g. String representation)? When and how is this method invoked? equals - is this for update? read? contention? dirty reads? What are the consequences of simply returning false in most cases? replace - I really don't understand where the three Object parameters come from, when this method is invoked, and what Hibernate expects to return, or how that return value is used. Any pointers would be appreciated. I've searched and read all I can find on the subject, but have not found much documentation at all explaining how these methods are used for mutable objects.

Entity Framework and differences between Contains between SQL and objects using ToLower

I have run into an "issue" I am not quite sure I understand with Entity Framework. I am using Entity Framework 4 and have tried to utilize a TDD approach. As a result, I recently implemented a search feature using a Repository pattern. For my test project, I am implementing my repository interface and have a set of "fake" object data I am using for test purposes. I ran into an issue trying to get the Contains clause to work for case invariant search. My code snippet for both my test and the repository class used against the database is as follows: if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(Description)) { items = items.Where(r => r.Description.ToLower().Contains(Description.ToLower())); } However, when I ran my test cases the results where not populated if my case did not match the underlying data. I tried looking into what I thought was an issue for a while. To clear my mind, I went for a run and wondered if the same code with EF would work against a SQL back end database, since SQL will explicitly support the like command and it executed as I expected, using the same logic. I understand why EF against the database back end supports the Contains clause. However, I was surprised that my unit tests did not. Any ideas why other than the SQL server support of the like clause when I use objects I populate in a collection instead of against the database server? Thanks! John
