• What a web developer can learn [closed]

  There are many things to learn in web development. You can easily find what are the most important thing that you need to learn if you want to be a webmaster. Answer to questions about how to become a web developer or a webmaster only contained limited items that someone need to master. (Some eg - a, b ) But the problem is that these resources are not complete. When I started learning web development i follow the same steps. But after learning the basic development I didn't know that I have learnt nothing, there are many more things to learn. I realized this by following blogs , Q&A sites. When I first downloaded the HTNL% Boilerplate, the issue that they have covered, some of them I haven't even heard about. I want you to just suggest what are the possible things, issues that someone can learn and why to learn. I know the answer is follow blogs and do your work you will learn with time, but with these platforms I could get some benefit out of other experiences. This question is not how to become a webmaster, but answer to this may also cover that too.

• Frequent change of file-system to read-only

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on my relatively new laptop. Initial few days, everything worked fine, but then suddenly I started getting a strange problem. After every 2-3 days, the file-system was becoming read-only. I was unable to save/download anything in the installation drive and the system hanged if I attempted to do so, after which I needed to force restart. I had to run fsck in the repair mode to get it fixed (temporarily). There I used to get the following messages: "Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found. UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN FSCK MANUALLY. fsck / [886] terminated with status 4. Filesystem has errors: /" Then it stopped here and I had to restart again, after which it asked whether I want to repair or not, then the system ran properly. After a day or 2, again I used to face exactly the same problem. The problem become more frequent in the last few days, and even after running the fsck and restarting, was not solving the problem. I re-installed the OS a couple of days back, but even after that, the problem exists. Though it is not that frequent now, but still at times, the file-system becomes read-only and the system stops behaving normally, and I have to run fsck in the repair mode, which makes the whole thing normal. Yes I keep my laptop switched on for long hours and it does get heated up. Please help. Thanks, Anuj

• My Macbook Pro doesn't give any reaction when pressing the power button

  An hour ago I closed the display my Macbook Pro. it goes into sleep mode. After dinner I returned, opened the display and wanted to continue with my work, but I recognized it was switched off completely. I tried to press the power button and received nothing. I also noticed that the green light on the power supply plug which is plugged into my Macbook is off. Same thing with a power supply from the Mac of a friend of mine. What could I try? Some suggestions? What could be the problem here?? I already tried using the battery to start, no success, also taking the battery out completely, no success. Even if I press the small button for showing the current battery charge, none of the leds starts. It's like the Mac is completely dead.

• Very large log files in IIS 7.x

  Hello, I had a site stop working today and when I RDP'd into the server I saw a warning about low disk space. The first thing I checked was the inetpub folder where the log files are stored and sure enough it was huge, 40 GB huge. I do clean the files monthly but what is causing a day's worth of logging on a medium activity site (www.vbdotnetforums.com) to create 300-500 MB log files? I do have everything being logged so my SmarterStats software gives me the most info, but are there specific things I should/can turn off that is causing the most growth in these log files? Also, sure would be nice if Microsoft someday had some sort of log file management such as deleting log files after they exceed a certain size (total), X days, etc. We all have to come up with some solution to delete the old ones manually. • Are there good resources for leading documentation for an existing software product having none?

  Hello. I'm a software developer at a technology company. I have been tasked with leading the documentation effort for the product I work on, both internal to developers as well as spilling over into facilitating the business side of requirements documentation. This internal product has been around for at least 6 years. One challenge is that this software application has no form of documentation other than some small, outdated pieces here and there. There are comments in the code, but they are technical and do not convey any over-arching behavior (even on technical side). As a consequence of having little to no documentation, this product is often unnecessarily complex under the covers adding to the challenge. We are very limited on time that will be given to us to work on documentation. Another thing about me is that I've displayed some ability in writing/communication around the office, but I'm not coming from any sort of documentation or formal writing background (beyond my academic career). Please share your advise or recommend resources, book/website/forum/whatever, for helping me come up with a plan with milestones, best practices, task delegation, templates, buy-in, etc. I'm hoping for a resource targeting or giving special mention of introducing good documentation on existing projects where there previously was none. • Is the difference between sudo and gksu the same as the difference between sudo -i and sudo -s?

  Is the difference between sudo cmd and gksu cmd, the same as the difference between starting a shell with sudo -i and sudo -s? ... or put another way, Is sudo cmd the same as sudo -i cmd and gksu cmd the same as sudo -s cmd? EDIT: Based on what I read on an Ubuntu Documentation Page where it says: You should never use normal sudo to start graphical applications as root. You should use gksudo (kdesudo on Kubuntu) to run such programs. gksudo sets HOME=~root, and copies .Xauthority to a tmp directory. This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root. (AFAICT, this is all that's special about the environment of the started process with gksudo vs. sudo). The "AFAICT" doen't really give me full confidence that there is nothing more to it. (..a belated UPDATE: I tested his commemnt today (2 months later) about: "This prevents files in your home directory becoming owned by root." All files I created via sudo/gksu were all owned by "root", and the group was "root".) I've read parts of the info sudo and noticed the -i and -s seem to be doing the same thing as the AFAICT environment issue... but I hit overload.. so I've asked my question here. PS.. My question is not about sudo vs gksu .. It is more about: Is gksu the same as sudo -s .. and if not, how do they differ?

• How should I unbind and delete OpenAL buffers?

  I'm using OpenAL to play sounds. I'm trying to implement a fire-and-forget play function that takes a buffer ID and assigns it to a source from a pool I have previously allocated, and plays it. However, there is a problem with object lifetimes. In OpenGL, delete functions either automatically unbind things (e.g. textures), or automatically deletes the thing when it eventually is unbound (e.g. shaders) and so it's usually easy to manage deletion. However alDeleteBuffers instead simply fails with AL_INVALID_OPERATION if the buffer is still bound to a source. Is there an idiomatic way to "delete" OpenAL buffers that allows them to finish playing, and then automatically unbinds and really them? Do I need to tie buffer management more deeply into the source pool (e.g. deleting a buffer requires checking all the allocated sources also)? Similarly, is there an idiomatic way to unbind (but not delete) buffers when they are finished playing? It would be nice if, when I was looking for a free source, I only needed to see if a buffer was attached at all and not bother checking the source state. (I'm using C++, although approaches for C are also fine. Approaches assuming a GCd language and using finalizers are probably not applicable.)

• A good substitute for ASMX web service methods, but not a general handler

  The best thing I like about ASP.NET MVC, is that you can directly call a server method (called action), from the client. This is so convenient, and so straightforward, that I really like to implement such a model in ASP.NET WebForms too. However, in ASP.NET WebForms, to call a server method from the client, you should either use Page Methods, or Web Services, both of which use SOAP as their communication protocol (though JSON can also be used). There is also another substitution, which is using Generic Handlers. The problem with them however is that, a separate Generic Handler should be written for each server method. In other words, each Generic Handler works like a simple method. Is there anyway else to imitate MVC model in ASP.NET WebForms? Please note that I can't change to MVC platform right now, cause the project at our hand is a big project and we don't have required resources and time to change our platform. What we seek, is a simple MVC model implementation for our AJAX calls. A problem that we have with Web Services, is the known problem of SoapException, and we're not interested in creating custom SoapExctensions.

• How do search engines handle hyphenated words?

  I am not sure my title fully explains what I mean. I thought this might be an interesting question. If I had a set of keywords, broken with a dash or 2, will search engines consider the dashed split keyword as maybe a full keyword? Say I have a site that sort of breaks words down, like the dictionary sites do. So a keyword for that page, might end up in the page, and / or the URL, as broken by dashes. Key-word = keyword Co-op-er-at-ive = cooperative Pho-to-gra-phy = Photography www.example.com/key-word/ www.example.com/co-op-er-at-ive/ www.example.com/pho-to-gra-phy/ I know search engines will consider a dash (at least Google) as a space, and understand it as multiple words. But in the English language, a dash can also break a word down (at least I think it can, can't it?), so will search engines also take this into consideration? I did a 'little' research, I Googled some words and placed random dashes, and it returned the words I searched for, but this could be considered a typo from the user on Google's search end, so really I am wondering if I can purposely put a dash in a keyword, and have the search engine spiders still catch that keyword as the real word without dashes? I've done a little Googling and looking here on Stackoverflow, but everything comes down to dashes for multiple words, not really the specific thing I'm trying to figure out. Hopefully that makes sense, I am not an expert in SEO, yet, but get the basics and have been playing, and this is just really a random question to satisfy my knowledge of playing :P

• I need some career guidance, please.

  Hi, I have been a teacher of guitar and music theory for the last ten years or so, and I have decided to get out of it and pursue something involving computers, but I am very confused about it all. I have no training related to programming besides a knowledge of xhtml and css - which I realize are not even programming languages. My problem is that I know I want to do something with either making video games, computer/online applications, or some other programming job, but I haven't a clue how to begin. I picked up a book from the Head First series entitled, Head First Programming that uses Python to teach programming concepts, but after that, I don't really know what is a good direction for me in terms of balancing career satisfaction with job availability and acceptable pay. I am not looking for a huge salary, I just want to be able to survive doing something I love, and which challenges me. I don't know even a single person involved in a related field, so I am in need of guidance. The first thing I would like to know is whether pursuing a career as a programmer for video games is a realistic option. I love video games, and play them all the time, and I have always wanted to make them. If this is an option, what would be the recommended course of action? What is a good language or technology to get involved in for the job market now? I have read that PHP/MySQL is a good place to find a job for some. Can I find a job without school, or do I need to got o college? Also, will the Python I learn in this book translate into any other language I need to learn? If it is anything like music, then I am sure it will, but I don't know much about programming - yet. And last, yet perhaps most important, is thirty years old too old to take such a radical redirection in careers? Thank you for any help you can offer. I really need it.

• How to dual-boot Windows XP & Ubuntu 12.04

  When I install Ubuntu 12.04 along side Windows XP, I encountered a choice for "Device for boot loader installation". I selected "Windows XP Professional" Now, when I select Windows XP from the grub, it appeares a black page and Windwos dosent boot. I tried Boot-Repair from Ubuntu but it dosent solve this problem. The only thing that helps me to boot Windwos XP is a Bootable CD of Windows. when I put this CD and boot from CD, it shows some options and when I select "Boot from Hard Drive" , my own Windows boots! Here's is a snippet from the bootinfoscript report: ============================= Boot Info Summary: =============================== => Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks for (,msdos5)/boot/grub on this drive. sda1: __________________________________________________________________________ File system: ntfs Boot sector type: Grub2 (v1.99-2.00) Boot sector info: Grub2 (v1.99-2.00) is installed in the boot sector of sda1 and looks at sector 525709174 of the same hard drive for core.img, but core.img can not be found at this location. • this operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer

  I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?

• Cannot find Ruby on Rails installed

  I've managed to install Ruby and the gems install (rvm?) but now I'm stuck actually installing Ruby on Rails. Every time I execute, gem install rails Terminal says that it's fetching each file and that it successfully installed it: 1 gem installed However when I then run the rails command, I'm told that it's not installed and to run the gem install rails command again. I've attempted to install with sudo but the same thing happens. I've restarted after an install and that's not worked. Ideas?

• Why doesn't Bumblebee work with Nvidia GT640M?

  I've done a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 from a liveCD on a Samsung Series 7 Chronos with a 3rd Gen i7 and the Nvidia GeForce GT 640M. I've followed this: (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee#Installation) to install bumblebee so I can switch to my discrete GPU. I have not used ironhide, or preivous bumblee since it's a clean install. When I use optirun, optirun says it can't initialize the GPU: [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: [XORG] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:1:0:0. Please [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled. I've looked at the troubleshooting page for bumblebee and I have the correct driver and do not think I have aspci disabled. Also, my keyboard becomes very unresponsive and my mouse skips and isn't smooth after optirun crashes. The only thing to fix this is a reboot. Here's my lspci | grep VGA output: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0fd2 (rev ff) It seems Ubuntu can see my graphics card. I don't really know what's going on.

• Firefox 15 hangs with Ubuntu kernel update

  I recently ran updates and it told me that in order to get those updates I had to update my kernel. I did that and also updated Firefox to 15. Since then Firefox hangs/gray screens sites I go to. This lasts anywhere from 5-10 seconds to 2-3 minutes. I have restarted Firefox with all add-ons disabled but it still did the same thing. I found a bug report on Launchpad that sounded like what was happening with me, but I haven't received any error codes, just the hanging/frozen screens. Also it seems that it ups my CPU making the rest of Ubuntu lag while Firefox is hung. I would guess the cause is a conflict between the updated kernel and the updated Firefox, but I'm still fairly new at Ubuntu and not sure where to go from here. Is there anything else to try? My Toshiba laptop specs are: Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bit) Linux 3.2.0-30-generic-pae #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 24 17:14:09 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Firefox 15.0.1 Intel® Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3400 @ 2.16GHz × 2 Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE2 Thanks!

• I'm a student learning C++ and I've recently found out about Ruby. Would learning (some of) Ruby help me with C++ or would it just confuse me?

  Hi! As the title says, I'm a student that will be starting my second year of C++ very soon. I've discovered Ruby, however. While I've heard much buzz about the language before, I've disregarded it because I always thought it wasn't something that would be useful. However, I've found a number of FANTASTIC tutorials on ruby and am interested in learning it (probably because it seems so straightforward). Would playing around with ruby be a good or bad idea? I understand that there's not such thing as bad knowledge, but I'm afraid that Ruby will only confuse me when dealing with C++. How different from C++ is it? I've read it's based on C in some way, but my google-fu seems to be horrible today. How useful is Ruby in the real world? I'm not specifically asking about jobs- I'm more interested in what sort of applications may come from this language. Any specific examples worth looking at? Going back to Question two- I've read some posts on here that Ruby and C++ can hold hands once in a while. How flexible is this relationship? Is it rarely that this would work? • Freezing with black screen after booting OS with AMD Catalyst driver

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 on my HP laptop. A few weeks ago I was confused with a weird trouble in proprietary drivers for my graphics card. When I start X server (or just boot Windows) system sometimes totally hangs up with black screen. The most annoying thing is that issue appearing is absolutely random (2 success, 3 fails, 1 success, 7 fails, etc.). It appears both on Linux (Arch, Debian 7) and Windows XP. I've tried reinstalling OS, drivers, etc. I've also tried updating BIOS. Then boot was successful for the next few times and issue appeared again (probably it was just a coincidence, because another BIOS updates gave no results). I really don't know what to do. Any ideas?

• Best option for PDF viewer embedded in web app

  I have a web app that needs to be able to display a PDF. It needs to allow the user to page through the PDF, and my application needs to be able to know which page is currently being viewed, because other aspects of the web app will change based on the current page. Ideally it would not be dependent on the client having Adobe Reader but I could probably support that dependency. What are my best options for this? My application stack consists of ASP.NET 4 along with optionally Silverlight 5. Also, I could use something that is client-side based as well using JavaScript / HTML if such a thing exists. I found ComponentOne's offering for this and that seems like the leading candidate at this point, but I want to know if there are other options I should consider. Edit: Per Fosco's comment, converting the PDF to another format (such as HTML) might be an option, as long as I could tie back parts of the converted document to the original PDF page #s. Another note: this has to run entirely on our servers. It would not be acceptable to use a third-party service to view the PDFs.

• How can I make sftp accounts that can only access their home directory?

  I'm using Ubuntu Server 9.10. I need to setup 6 accounts for users that will exclusively need sftp. When the user logs in, I need them to only have access to their home directory. I don't want them to be able to navigate to any other places in the file system. I need their ability to type commands to be limited to only the commands needed to view and transfer files back and forth to their home directory. Can anyone offer some guidance on setting thing up this way?

• Issue with www to non www redirect

  Hello, I am on slicehost and I followed the articles that they gave for DNS redirection and the www to non www url redirection does work. However, what if I want a www.domain.com to be the default domain. Would I put www.domain.com. as my DNS record name or would I keep domain.com. as my DNS record and then do something else. Basically, what happens is if someone goes to the url www.domain.com/directory/something.html they will be redirected to domain.com and not domain.com/directory/something.html I would like the second thing to happen, not just go to domain.com and call it a day. I am running nginx and am confounded on how to solve this issue. I'm not sure whether its an nginx issue or a dns issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Seeking automated toolchain for WAV cleanup and conversion to MP3 (currently using Audacity manually

  I use Finale with the Garritan sounds to convert my music into WAV files; after that I manually load each one into Audacity and select all use the "normalize" effect (with default settings) manually select the silence at the beginning of the file and delete it manually select the silence at the end of the file and delete it finally export the whole thing as an MP3 (with specific tag data) This gets tedious, especially as I work on a ten-movement piece with six part-prominent rehearsal "tapes" to accompany the full-score rendition. And there are too many variations in what's going on for me to trust AutoHotKey for this one. Is there a way to script Audacity, or is there another toolchain that would do what I want? I'm running on a WindowsXP laptop with cygwin installed. Thanks!

• Automatic Remote REGEDIT?

  I've got a lot of computers on the domain here that do not have remote desktop enabled. I can open the command prompt and do this command: REG.exe ADD \\[the machine im doing this to]\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\\"Terminal Server" /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0 and it works perfectly fine, except for one thing - it makes a prompt asking if I'm sure I want to do this, Yes/No. How would I go about having a batch file auto-answer YES to this, so I don't have to type it every time? It wouldn't be a problem if it was just a couple hundred machines, but there's plenty more than that and it would take a while to do this by hand. Not to mention I might have to sweep a few times to make sure every computer is turned on and is affected by this.

  I'm new to to Linux, in this particular case, to Ubuntu. I have a small android project I have to finnish until this Friday and I'm still stuck with the install and preparing of the development envrironment. The only thing I did was install the Eclipse IDE. I'm still missing the SDK, JAVA and anything else that might be needed. Can someone help me through this? It's only because I'm running out of time to develop, or else I would embarc on a deeper investigation of this OS. • Less is more: The making of a 37 signals style pizza

  For years now we have been hearing from 37 signals that the way to bake a great web app is to build less – well the same is true of pizza. Our western hedonism has led us to pursue ever cheesier and more stuffed crusts at the expense of the simple flavours. All we are left with is a fatty, salty heart attack in waiting. The Italians know that the secret to great taste is simplicity. With that in mind I decided to base my pizza masterpiece on these simple flavours: tomato sopressa (spicy aged salami) mozzarella garlic basil Of course the first thing one needs when making pizza is a base.   A freshly made base is extremely important but unfortunately I was too lazy. Next up is the tomato sauce. My wife made the sauce by reducing some tomatoes and adding herbs and sugar. We had selected some fine ingredients to make our topping: sopressa salami, fresh basil and the best mozzarella we could find.   It is, according to google, important to bake pizza at a high temperature, so I set the oven to 250C (480F). • Are there opportunities working as full-time paid programmer for Non-profit organizations

  Some recent events in my life have made me want to contribute more to causes I believe in rather than just working for a profit-driven company. I have been thinking that if I could find a non-profit organization that I like and believe in then I might feel more fulfilled working for them. I have a decent amount of web development experience and currently work as a Java / Spring web developer. I realize the compensation wouldn't have the same "ceiling" potential as for-profit but am wondering if its possible to get at least something close to a market rate for work as I am planning to start a family sometime soon and still need a legitimate income. If anyone has any knowledge or experience about this sort of thing would be happy to hear from you. EDIT: Without getting in to too much personal detail, I have a relative who recently passed away who suffered from a mental illness so while it doesn't have to be an organization specifically dedicated to this, I am hoping to work for something along these lines at least where there is more of a social cause rather than just working on an open-source project whose only cause is the advancement of technology.
