• Can Windows power manager stop SYS HDD, if it is not in use?

  I am running a windows 2008 server and trying to manage its power such that the system drive should stop if not used for 10 min. My all of other power settings including on my backup drive work except this one and same is behavior on my Win 7 workstation. Is it something blocked by the OS or I am doing some mistake?

• Copy + Paste Chinese From Website

  I am re-branding a website that has both English & Chinese Traditional text. When I am copying + pasting the Chinese text into notepad++, the characters gets displayed as question marks. I tried changing the language settings within notepad++ to Chinese, but it now displays as squashed rectangles. I also changed my keyboard language setting in Windows 7 to Chinese but it did not work. This is what I see when I right-click in Chrome to copy the Chinese character:

New employee #4 has been set up with his own calendar per the owner's request, they use colored categories for their calendar events, and his categorized activities are not showing up as colored on the other users' Outlook calendars - only his own. • Enabling Squid delay pool eats up the entire memory

  I am using "squid-3.1.8-1.el5" in my CentOS 5 32 bit system. In normal condition Squid uses 85m - 90m, but when I enable the delay pool parameters the memory usage suddenly rise up 2GB. The memory keeps on increasing until the system is out of resource. The following are my delay pool settings: delay_pools 1 delay_class 1 1 delay_access 1 allow all delay_parameters 1 192000/192000 Is there anything I am missing here or is it a bug with Squid ?

• I need to configure Thunderbird to read from my local hmail server.

  I'm using hmailserver and am attempting to connect to it through thunderbird. I can see how to setup from a external server, but not internal. I can't seem to find the settings to set this up and am not even sure if they exist. I have connected hmailserver to an account already so it has downloaded the emails to my local hard drive, but I need to put them in some readable format. That's what I was hoping I could do with Thunderbird.

• Photocopying using a separate scanner and printer

  I have 2 printers. HP Deskjet F2235 - designated scanner (has printing issues) Brother HL-2040 - designated printer (doesn't have a scanner) Just by using those two both connected to the same computer, is there a way to perform a photocopy operation by scanning via the designated scanner then immediately it being printed from the designated printer? Obviously you could save the scanned files then print them, but short of making a script or manually doing this, is there a faster automatic way through settings or third-party software?

• Possible HDD malfunction. Need help in diagnosing

  Today when using my PC as I did for almost 4 years I experienced the following: during opening new tab in Opera browser screen froze. Music (AIMP 3) continued to play for about 5 minutes and then stopped too. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del, but win7 lock screen didn't appear. Caps\Scroll or Num locks didn't switch diodes on keyboard. I rebooted my PC and saw that BIOS suggests me to enter it's settings or load by default. I chose default. It don't see proper boot device (old faitful "insert proper boot" something). After second reboot it said that there is no ExpressGate installed (which i turned off in BIOS years ago). I went into BIOS setting to turn off ExpressGate and see configs: time was not set off, all hard drives present, temp and O.C. settings are nominal (no O.C.) I've inserted my Win7 install disk to try recovery. It did load awfully long (about few minutes) and didn't see current installation. PC was utilized in 24/7 mode for almost all these years. Hardware configuration: ASUS P5Q WS Core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.5GHz no O.C.) MSI geForce GTX 460 4x2 Gb GeIL EVO 2 (AFAIR) Seagate something 750Gb (4 years as system HDD 24/7) WD 1Tb (for random stuff, 5 y.o.) Hitachi 500Gb (for even more random stuff, 6 y.o.) NEC DVDRW (ALL DISKS ARE SATA) Cooler Master Silent Pro 700W Software: Windows 7 AND Kubuntu on the same drive with GRUB loader. Sorry I can't remember HDDs and can't see them right now, but I think their models aren't relevant anyway. My idea is that due to some system error or hard drive glitch i've wrecked my primary HDD's MBR. Nevertheless I don't exclude the possibility of other failure. May it's be that motherboard or it's SATA controller? Doubt it, because all drives are seen in BIOS and I could load from DVD. Maybe GRUB got bugged somehow, although I don't see how it's possible from Windows. But I did install KUbuntu from Windows (i wasn't myself then), maybe GRUB did write itself in some windows partition and got rewriteen in process? Right now I am at work with my flash drive with me and I need some advice how to fix MBR or to hear if it's not MBR. I'm going to buy new HDD (Hitachi 7k2000) because I think that my current HDD is compromised and it's unsafe to use it as system drive, especially 24/7.

  I got a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop from the local computer store, it is obviously a used machine. When I got it the data from the previous user was on it they did not do a wipe. Anyhow Dell was not being any help to me on wiping the data. Does anyone know how I get the machine to restore Windows to the factory settings. • Can't start computer, it only boots into BIOS update

  My son has a Compaq Presario computer running on Windows 7 and he has brought it down to me cause it's 'not working'. When I start up the computer I get a HP BIOS update that fails and keeps restarting with the same screens, only to fail every time. I have read some forum posts that suggest taking it back to default settings – how do I do this when I cant get anything on the computer screen except for the update? I'm a complete novice with computers.

  I'm trying to set a static IP address in Ubuntu 11.04. I did a server install. I edited my /etc/network/interfaces file to include: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.0.0.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.0.0.1 When I do a /etc/init.d/networking restart this appears to take. After awhile though, that 10.0.0.100 will turn into something dished out by the DHCP server. My problem appears to be similar to this: Ubuntu intrepid - static IP networking keeps restarting with DHCP But I don't have Gnome installed. Is there anything else that's running in the background that could be doing this? And if so, how do I disable it?

• Touchpad not working after login in Ubuntu

  At some point my touchpad stopped working on Lenovo x220 under Ubuntu 11.10, after login. I have found two possible solutions for that online, but neither of them work. First, gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true and a second one, xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Off" 8 0 After looking more carefully into xinput I have realized that xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" outputs: Device Enabled (132): 0 This field seems to be stuck to zero, because trying to set it back to 1 by: xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Device Enabled" 8 1 doesn't seem to have any effect, e.g. I still have: Device Enabled (132): 0 Any ideas?   Most of the time, I would like my Windows 7 laptop to sleep when I close it. But sometimes, I like to connect an external monitor over DVI. I would like my laptop to use the external monitor when I close the lid, but only when a monitor is connected to the DVI port. Otherwise, sleep when closed. Is there any way I can do that, without manually changing the power settings every time I decide to use the monitor?

  Hello I am new to ubuntu linux and am currently trying to configure my netbeans to work with PHP. I have found several tutorials to install all the applications I need and have installed a virtual directory for netbeans to run in. Unfortunately, whenever netbeans or I myself go to my local host I get an error 403. I tried modifying my settings to allow from localhost (instead of allow from all) but this did not work and am completely out of ideas.

• Make thunderbird store all mail locally for IMAP accounts but not indexing all for search

  In Thunderbird the global gloda search is connected to the selection of downloaded/syncronized folders of the IMAP accounts in the Offline-settings. Is it possible somehow, that Thunderbirds download/syncs all emails in the IMAP account but does not add them to the index for the global search? I would like to do this because I have some accounts that I only keep in thunderbird for archiving reasons but I don't want to find those mails, when I use the global search
