    What would be the fastest portable bi-directional communication mechanism for inter-process communication where threads from one application need to communicate to multiple threads in another application on the same computer, and the communicating threads can be on different physical CPUs). I assume that it would involve a shared memory and a circular buffer and shared synchronization mechanisms. But shared mutexes are very expensive (and there are limited number of them too) to synchronize when threads are running on different physical CPUs.

  • Increase samba space on open suse 12.1

    I know linux basics but not an expert. IT guy left the job here and there is some time before new hire. So sorry if question is very basic. We have local testing server based on Open SUSE 12.1, which also act as shared drive between dev/mgmt team here and using Samba for that. Now we are running out of space on samba, even though server's 2*1TB harddisk is nearly 90% free. My question is, what is limiting Samba and how can I increase its limit? We need around at least 500 GB as shared drive but currently its just 25 GB. I don't need step by step answer, just a link to any helpful article would be sufficient. Probably I'm putting wrong keywords in google so not getting any helpful link. EDIT: Output of commands in the first comment.   • No device file for partition on logical volume (Linux LVM)

    I created a logical volume (scandata) containing a single ext3 partition. It is the only logical volume in its volume group (case4t). Said volume group is comprised by 3 physical volumes, which are three primary partitions on a single block device (/dev/sdb). When I created it, I could mount the partition via the block device /dev/mapper/case4t-scandatap1. Since last reboot the aforementioned block device file has disappeared. It may be of note -- I'm not sure -- that my superior (a college professor) had prompted this reboot by running sudo chmod -R [his name] /usr/bin, which obliterated all suid in its path, preventing the both of us from sudo-ing. That issue has been (temporarily) rectified via this operation. And /dev/case4t/scandata (no partition number) cannot be mounted: $sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/case4t/scandata /mnt/new mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/case4t-scandata, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so All I get on syslog is: [170059.538137] VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev dm-0.   • Can't sync filesystem without reboot

    I'm having an issue with a linux server. Once a week the running mysql instance hangs and there is no way to fully stop it. If I kill it, it remains in zombie status and init does not reap its pid. The server is used for staging deployments and some internal tools, so it's not under heavy load. The only process constantly used id mysql and for this I think that it's the only process which suffer of this issue. I've tracked reboots script and I've found out that also the reboot process hangs on a sync call, this one in /etc/init.d/sendsigs (I'm on ubuntu) # Flush the kernel I/O buffer before we start to kill # processes, to make sure the IO of already stopped services to # not slow down the remaining processes to a point where they # are accidentily killed with SIGKILL because they did not # manage to shut down in time. sync I'm almost sure that the cause of this is an hardware issue (the RAID controller???) also because I've other two machines with the same hardware and software configuration and they don't suffer of this, but I can't find any hint in syslog or dmesg. I've also installed smartmontools and mcelog packages but none of them did report any issue. What can I do to track the cause of this issue?   • Setup access to SAS RAID drives with NTFS partitions on CentOS Machine

    We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 system with Adaptec 39320A SCSI CONTROLLER CARD and 4 SAS hard drives attached, with NTFS partitions on them. We installed CentOS on the other raid array with a different controller and it is working fine. We are now trying to access the drives shown above and they are not being shown in /dev as sdb, etc. sda is the drive that we installed centos on and it has sda1, sda2, sda3, etc. The CDROM has been picked up as well. If I scan for scsi devices then the perc and adaptec controllers are both found. sg0 is the CDROM and sg2 is the centos installed, however I think sg1 is the other drive but I cannot see anyway to mount the partitions, as only the drive is listed in /dev.   • How do I group Quick Launch icons in Windows Vista?

    My quick launch task bar has about 30 icons and is pretty unmanegable. What I would like is to create Quick Launch groups, so I can move my mouse over the "Design Group" icon and a pop-up/menu will appear that shows my icons for Illustrator, Photoshop, etc... I can almost get there by linking to a folder and having my Design icons in there, but I have to click on the icon. Can anyone recommend anything here?

    Many people like to think of building software as constructing a building so we have terms like building blocks and architecture. However, lately I've been to a couple of talks and most people say this analogy is wrong especially around the idea of having a non-coding software architect in a project. In my experience, good software architects are those who also write code so they won't design things that only looks good on paper. I've worked with several Architecture Astronauts, who have either limited or outdated experience in programming. These architecture astronauts quite often missed out critical details in their design and cause more harm than good in a project. This makes me wonder what are the differences between constructing a software and a building? How come in the building industry they can have architects who probably never build a house in their life and purely handles design work but not in the software development field?

    What impact do you think html5 will have on the workflow/way graphic design is done for the web? Right now most designers stay in an Adobe tool, doing most of the design work there, and implement some elements with graphics and some with code. Checking out http://www.apple.com/html5/ it seems that almost everything done in a graphic can be done in code. Will designers have to learn very advanced levels of html5 and do the actual design work in the browser or do you see a more "designer friendly" gui being made for html/graphics work? Will tools like photoshop evolve in a way that handles this new lack of image files?

The performance of the stored procedures is so slow even with suitable indexes on the tables. The design of the database is a normal relational db design. I want to change the database design to be multidimensional and use the MDX queries instead of the traditional T-SQL queries but the question is: Is the MDX query better than the traditional T-SQL query with regard to performance? and if yes, to what extent will that improve the performance of the queries?     I'm using the 960.gs CSS framework on a site and have hit problems almost instantly with IE (7, though I assume 6 is no better). <html> <head> <link rel="stylesheet" href="design/reset.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="design/960.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="design/text.css" /> </head> <body> <div class="container_12">abc</div> </body> </html> Given this HTML above (the CSS is just the files bundled with 960), Firefox and Chrome centre the grid, whereas IE pushes it to the left. I've used 960 before without any issues, so I think I must just be doing something really stupid. Can anyone help?

    I have created a console application using Visual Studio 2008. In a few cases, this application shows a WPF dialog. Now, the design view of Visual Studio is a little limited, so I'd like to edit this dialog using Expression Blend 3. Blend does not seem to have an option to load individual XAML files, and when I open my solution in Blend, only the XAML code is displayed when I try to edit the dialog. Edit: I've noticed, that no IntelliSense is available in the text view either. When I create a new WPF Project inside Blend, and copy my dialog there (overwriten MainWindows.xaml), I get a design view. What do I have to do to actually get a design view here? My question is - Does it imply any licensing issue with Microsoft for directly hosting their Visual Studio Forms designer in my own application ?     I am creating a Wordpress blog (no live link yet because it's still at a planning stage). I want to set up the following tag structure: Category 1: Services Tags: Web design, logo design, print design, etc etc. Category 2: Type of clients Tags: small businesses, large companies So each post will be tagged with one or more tags from Category 1, and one tag from Category 2. However, I heard that using more than one Category per post is a bad idea in terms of SEO? But then, how can I go about it? I don't want any SEO penalties, but I will need to somehow categorize each post using these 2 distinct categories. Should I create some custom taxonomies? That seems like an overkill to me. The solution is probably something rather simple but it just escapes me. I'm not very experienced with taxonomies so I'll appreciate any suggestions.

  • Any editors to visually modify Wix templates?

    I have tried wixedit and sharp develop and from what I can tell they do not allow you to visually modify the premade templates with a designer. They only allow you to create your own customized dialogs that you can design yourself. So I am wondering if there is any editors that you can visually modify the design of these templates, especially the mondo template with a point and click editor. I have also tried SharpSetup and it looks promising how you can design the interface in visual studio, although since I don't know much about editing wix I am having a hard time comming up with the wix code to make it work.
