  • How would you shorten 5,000+ URLs? [closed]

    How would you go about shortening approximately 5,000 permalinks? The links point to a remote media archiving server, and are unlikely to change. Example URLs: rtsp://foo-1.bar.com/xx/xx/xx/xx.rm http://media.foo.org/xx/xx/xx.mp4 The URLs are going to be stored in a local MySQL database, as such it's crucial that the URLs are in a manageable form (i.e bit.ly or ow.ly). There are bulk URL shortening services, but those only allow shortening of 100 links/day, which isn't technically feasible so I need to think of something else.

  • Is it possible for root to execute a command as non-root

    I am root user and suppose i want to run any application as another user. is it possible, without switching to another user. Something like # google-chrome user=abc I am actually executing a cli program as a non root user. I have set the sticky bit on and i am using setuid. So the program runs with root privileges. Now i am using system() with in the program to invoke gui app. But i dont want to run it as root. so i want to temporarily drop root privileges only for that call.

  • OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

    I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file.   • Fix superblock size after dd?

    I've recently installed Linux Mint 11, and somehow my partition table ended up so that both it and the unallocated space for Windows 7 were inside an extended partition, which Windows didn't like when I tried to install. So, because I had spent a few hours configuring Mint already, I backed it up to my external hard drive using dd. I have restored it to the new partition I made for Mint, but new the partition isn't the same size as the one I dd'd from, so I'm getting yelled at for having a bad superblock size. Is there any way that I can fix this while keeping the new, smaller partition? -Trey

  • Can I open a Disk2vhd created VHD file with 7-zip?

    I've created a VHD file of my C: drive, for backup purposes, using Disk2vhd 1.0. When I try opening the file using 7-Zip 4.65 (to view the contents) I get the error: "Can not open the file XXX as an archive". Does anyone know why this is? I have to assume that either the VHD creation failed and it's a corrupted file, or Disk2vhd creates a variation of the VHD format that 7-Zip doesn't support.

    I'm not clear on exactly what the -R flag does for chflags. I was wondering if someone might be able to help me. The man page says this: Recurse: Change the file flags of file hierarchies rooted in the files instead of just the files themselves. I don't understand what that means.   • Converting a bunch of MP3s to mono?

    I have a bunch of stereo MP3s I'd like to convert to mono. What is the best way to do this? I would prefer something that would let be batch process them. I want to keep the quality as close to the original as possible. My files are also in different bitrates, so I don't want to make all files 320kpbs when some are only 128. Also, is there any quick way to see which files are stereo out of my entire library?

  • Saving ink when printing?

    I need a map of the SMC campus, but I'm really sick of running out of ink after printing one thing and then having to pay ridiculous sums of money to buy more ink. The map is here: http://www.smc.edu/campusmap/images/SMC-2D-Map_12-Clr_9-10_crop.jpg I would print in black and white, but I'm wondering if there are any chrome or photoshop extensions, or even websites that transform the image into something more ink-conservative. For example, I don't need the buildings to be a solid color, or the roads to be gray, so it would be a tremendous waste of ink to print it as is. Anyone know anything like I'm talking about?

  • Performance of Google Desktop Search on Windows 7

    I have read that that installing Google Desktop Search on Vista can slow down the computer because Vista already has a search indexing feature, and adding Google's separate indexing feature results in a performance hit. (Google hints at this in their FAQ here.) Does this problem also exist in Win 7? Is there a workaround that improves performance?

  • Debugging Samba/CUPS printer sharing with Windows

    I've got a HP Deskjet hooked up to a Slackware 12.2 box. I've got CUPS set up and can print a test page from the box just fine. I've also got Samba set up and have a couple file shares that work fine. I'm trying to share that HP Deskjet out via Samba, but I can't get it to show up in any Windows system. I see the server and its file shares in Windows networking, but when I open the Printers, no printer shows up. Running net view \\servername from the command line lists the file shares, but no printers. Here's the pertinent part of my smb.conf, if that helps: [global] workgroup = HOMENET security = share hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. load printers = yes printcap name = cups printing = cups log file = /var/log/samba.%m max log size = 50 [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no public = yes writable = no printable = yes guest only = yes Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking for potential causes?   • Mac Mail sent messages not in sent folder

    Hi. My powerbook G4 has been lobbying for a furlough recently, and its latest prank is to not show sent messages in my sent mailbox. I have always had a copy of every sent message, and now, for some unknown reason, I can only see sent messages from May 7 and earlier. When I did a test, and sent myself an email, it shows up fine in my inbox, but there's nothing in the sent folder. Weird. It also has the little arrow next to messages that I replied to in the inbox. I guess I'm going to have to cc myself on everything until I get this fixed. Also, it's got another new trick, which I'm assuming is unrelated, but I mention it here just in case it is: the battery says it's "good" and has a cycle count of 0, and a full charge capacity of 2139, but for some reason it's all of a sudden not charging when it's plugged in. It works fine when connected to the wall, but there is no battery life at all. Zip. Any thoughts? Is it just time for a new 'book? This one just got back from Apple, having its harddrive replaced for the fourth time (for free, but seriously, this thing is a lemon). Thanks so much, Elizabeth

Scenario my local net assign me an IP of this class 192.168.1.xxx (ex. 192.168.1.116) and my VPN (VPNC) assign me IP of same class 192.168.1.xxx (ex. 192.168.1.247) Obviously I need VPN to access local address (ex. 192.168.1.100) but when I open any address of the class 192.168.1.xx the route point to my local net and not to the VPN ones.   • How can I get Gmail Chat to run in background on my iPhone?

    For my iPhone, is there anyway to have gmail chat ping me, when a new chat occurs, and I am on another app? Unlike Android or Blackberry, I am amazed that I have yet not found anything that works well on the iphone for chatting with friends. Am I missing something here? Or is this just one of the greatest overlooked features that my iPhone does not have. And any solution offered can be either from the app store or cydia. Thanks.

Surely there must be a way to use a 'space' without making it a parameter delimeter?

    Whenever I put the the computer to hibernate or standby, black screen appears and it stays forever. How to rectify this? Pressing any key does not wake my system. Finally I do force shutdown and then restart. Even no activity is shown by harddisk. I have dual boot Fedora/Vista sony vaio.

    According to this URL I should be able to start Komodo IDE from the command line when I want to edit a file. But there is one thing that bothers me, which is my Mac partition volume is losing space slowly and gradually. I am pretty sure there are a lot of orphaned temporary files laying around in the volume. I know where to find the obsoleted temp files in my Windows partition, how about in Mac OSX?

  • Looking for software to create a personal hotspot on Mac OS X (not using the built-in ability)

    I got my nifty little MacBook Air today. Since I will be going on travel I was hoping to use my iPad 3G as screen extension with Air Display. It works being in a shared WiFi network. Sadly Apple is a bit restrictive on the tethering with their mobile devices such as the iPad. Now I read iOS 4.3 will enable the iPad to use tethered networks. But the feature will not be working for iPad 3G. I assume their big partner telecom companies fear everyone will quit their internet contract with them. So I want to create a personal hotspot on my MacBook and use it on my iPad. But the iPad is not able to use this network. The network is visible but not usable. On Windows there is this connectify program which lets the PC act as wireless router. Does anybody know a similar program for Mac which would turn it into a wireless router? Or is there something I don't see with Mac OS X's builtin features?
