  • How to preserve &amp; in <pre><code>

    - by Marcy Sutton
    I am having trouble preserving an ampersand in a code example on my blog, because all HTML entities start with &. Any tips? For example: <pre> <code> $pageTitle = str_replace('&', ' &amp;', $page->attributes()->title); </code> </pre> Renders as: $pageTitle = str_replace('&', '&', $page->attributes()->title);

  • In php, Prepare string and create XML/RSS Feed

    - by Bill
    I want to create my own RSS/XML feed. I fetch data from the database to display, but keep getting invalid character errors. If the string has an ampersand or other strange characters in it, the XML will be invalid. I tried using urlencode and htmlentities, but these don't capture all possible characters which need to be escaped. Does anyone know of a PHP function which will prepare a string for XML output?

  • PHP problem with getimagesize()

    - by RobHardgood
    I'm using the getimagesize() function in PHP and it keeps returning an error: getimagesize(image.php?name=username&pic=picture) [function.getimagesize]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory I'm not doing anything strange with it. The only problem I can imagine is that the path URL is another PHP script that returns a page with an image header, and there is an ampersand in that URL. Here is my code: $location = "image.php?name=username&pic=picture"; $size = getimagesize($location);

  • Look up values in a BDB for several files in parallel

    - by biznez
    What is the most efficient way to look up values in a BDB for several files in parallel? If I had a Perl script which did this for one file at a time, would forking/running the process in background with the ampersand in Linux work? How might Hadoop be used to solve this problem? Would threading be another solution?

  • Postion of & to denote reference type

    - by Matt H
    I was wondering whether to put the ampersand (&) after the variable type or before the variable name. To put it simply, I want to know which one is the conventional style or the standard, or if it is entirely down to preference. int &x; or int& x;

  • MySQL, replacing &nbsp; with... nothing (delete those, please!)

    - by javipas
    I'm trying to purge my WordPress content from "false" carriage return (CR). These are caused after a migration of my content, that now presents from time to time a &nbsp; code that makes the web rendering engine to "paint" a CR where I would like to be nothing. The paragraphs seem to have a double CR because of this, and look too far apart. I'd like to be able to make a MySQL query in order to get rid of that strings, but at the moment I haven't found the key. What I've tried is UPDATE wp_posts set post_content = replace (post_content,'&nbsp;',' '); But i get <p> </p> where before were the &nbsp; strings. This seems not the answer at all. Could it have to be with the ampersand, and in that case, should I use something like &amp;nbsp; or something similar?

  • Jenkins swarm-plugin jar file, won't run in background

    - by JeanMertz
    We're working on an automation script for our Jenkins slaves on a local Unix server. To connect the slaves to the Jenkins master, we use the swarm plugin. Setting up the master was easy, and connecting clients is also easy with a single command. However, I am trying to get the slave command (a java application) to run in the background without stalling the current process, this doesn't seem to work. I've created an init.d file and added it to update-rc.d but that doesn't work. #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/java -jar /root/swarm-client-1.7-jar-with-dependencies.jar -executors 4 I've also tried to run it with an ampersand & to start the process in the background, but that doesn't work either because - from looking at the source - the jar file actually boots another process that is then started in the foreground. Any ideas on how to make this jar file start without stopping the bootstrap script?

  • Redirect output of Python program to /dev/null

    - by STM
    I have a Python executable, written and compiled by somebody else, that I simply need to run once halfway down my own bash script. The program uses a text-based UI, therefore waits for input before proceeding, but the key operations it performs when starting are required in my bash script. A messy (and strange) procedure I know, but unfortunately I haven't got any other options. I've gotten around forcefully closing the program with a kill signal, but the program's TUI insists on outputting to wherever it's run. I've tried redirecting both stdout and stderr to /dev/null and running the program in the background by suffixing an ampersand, but simply can't get it to play ball. I believe the cause is the program spawns other processes, and the output redirection of the parent process doesn't affect them. Is there any trick I can utilise to redirect all output from child processes too?

  • How do I run multiple commands on one line in Powershell?

    - by David
    In cmd prompt, you can run two commands on one line like so: ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew When I run this command in PowerShell, I get: Ampersand not allowed. The & operator is reserved for future use Does PowerShell have an operator that allows me to quickly produce the equivalent of & in cmd prompt? Any method of running two commands in one line will do. I know that I can make a script, but I'm looking for something a little more off the cuff.

  • Regular expression to remove one parameter from query string

    - by Kip
    I'm looking for a regular expression to remove a single parameter from a query string, and I want to do it in a single regular expression if possible. Say I want to remove the foo parameter. Right now I use this: /&?foo\=[^&]+/ That works as long as foo is not the first parameter in the query string. If it is, then my new query string starts with an ampersand. (For example, "foo=123&bar=456" gives a result of "&bar=456".) Right now, I'm just checking after the regex if the query string starts with ampersand, and chopping it off if it does. Example edge cases: Input | Output -------------------------+----------------- foo=123 | (empty string) foo=123&bar=456 | bar=456 bar=456&foo=123 | bar=456 abc=789&foo=123&bar=456 | abc=789&bar=456 Edit OK as pointed out in comments there are there are way more edge cases than I originally considered. I got the following regex to work with all of them: /&foo(\=[^&]*)?(?=&|$)|^foo(\=[^&]*)?(&|$)/ This is modified from Mark Byers's answer, which is why I'm accepting that one, but Roger Pate's input helped a lot too. Here is the full suite of test cases I'm using, and a Perl script which tests them. Input | Output -------------------------+------------------- foo | foo&bar=456 | bar=456 bar=456&foo | bar=456 abc=789&foo&bar=456 | abc=789&bar=456 foo= | foo=&bar=456 | bar=456 bar=456&foo= | bar=456 abc=789&foo=&bar=456 | abc=789&bar=456 foo=123 | foo=123&bar=456 | bar=456 bar=456&foo=123 | bar=456 abc=789&foo=123&bar=456 | abc=789&bar=456 xfoo | xfoo xfoo&bar=456 | xfoo&bar=456 bar=456&xfoo | bar=456&xfoo abc=789&xfoo&bar=456 | abc=789&xfoo&bar=456 xfoo= | xfoo= xfoo=&bar=456 | xfoo=&bar=456 bar=456&xfoo= | bar=456&xfoo= abc=789&xfoo=&bar=456 | abc=789&xfoo=&bar=456 xfoo=123 | xfoo=123 xfoo=123&bar=456 | xfoo=123&bar=456 bar=456&xfoo=123 | bar=456&xfoo=123 abc=789&xfoo=123&bar=456 | abc=789&xfoo=123&bar=456 foox | foox foox&bar=456 | foox&bar=456 bar=456&foox | bar=456&foox abc=789&foox&bar=456 | abc=789&foox&bar=456 foox= | foox= foox=&bar=456 | foox=&bar=456 bar=456&foox= | bar=456&foox= abc=789&foox=&bar=456 | abc=789&foox=&bar=456 foox=123 | foox=123 foox=123&bar=456 | foox=123&bar=456 bar=456&foox=123 | bar=456&foox=123 abc=789&foox=123&bar=456 | abc=789&foox=123&bar=456 Test script (Perl) @in = ('foo' , 'foo&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foo' , 'abc=789&foo&bar=456' ,'foo=' , 'foo=&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foo=' , 'abc=789&foo=&bar=456' ,'foo=123' , 'foo=123&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foo=123' , 'abc=789&foo=123&bar=456' ,'xfoo' , 'xfoo&bar=456' , 'bar=456&xfoo' , 'abc=789&xfoo&bar=456' ,'xfoo=' , 'xfoo=&bar=456' , 'bar=456&xfoo=' , 'abc=789&xfoo=&bar=456' ,'xfoo=123', 'xfoo=123&bar=456', 'bar=456&xfoo=123', 'abc=789&xfoo=123&bar=456' ,'foox' , 'foox&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foox' , 'abc=789&foox&bar=456' ,'foox=' , 'foox=&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foox=' , 'abc=789&foox=&bar=456' ,'foox=123', 'foox=123&bar=456', 'bar=456&foox=123', 'abc=789&foox=123&bar=456' ); @exp = ('' , 'bar=456' , 'bar=456' , 'abc=789&bar=456' ,'' , 'bar=456' , 'bar=456' , 'abc=789&bar=456' ,'' , 'bar=456' , 'bar=456' , 'abc=789&bar=456' ,'xfoo' , 'xfoo&bar=456' , 'bar=456&xfoo' , 'abc=789&xfoo&bar=456' ,'xfoo=' , 'xfoo=&bar=456' , 'bar=456&xfoo=' , 'abc=789&xfoo=&bar=456' ,'xfoo=123', 'xfoo=123&bar=456', 'bar=456&xfoo=123', 'abc=789&xfoo=123&bar=456' ,'foox' , 'foox&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foox' , 'abc=789&foox&bar=456' ,'foox=' , 'foox=&bar=456' , 'bar=456&foox=' , 'abc=789&foox=&bar=456' ,'foox=123', 'foox=123&bar=456', 'bar=456&foox=123', 'abc=789&foox=123&bar=456' ); print "Succ | Input | Output | Expected \n"; print "-----+--------------------------+--------------------------+-------------------------\n"; for($i=0; $i <= $#in; $i++) { $out = $in[$i]; $out =~ s/_PUT_REGEX_HERE_//; $succ = ($out eq $exp[$i] ?   • How can I disable 'output escaping' in minidom

    - by William
    I'm trying to build an xml document from scratch using xml.dom.minidom. Everything was going well until I tried to make a text node with a ® (Registered Trademark) symbol in. My objective is for when I finally hit print mydoc.toxml() this particular node will actually contain a ® symbol. First I tried: import xml.dom.minidom as mdom data = '®' which gives the rather obvious error of: File "C:\src\python\HTMLGen\test2.py", line 3 SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\xae' in file C:\src\python\HTMLGen\test2.py on line 3, but no encoding declared; see http://www.python.or g/peps/pep-0263.html for details I have of course also tried changing the encoding of my python script to 'utf-8' using the opening line comment method, but this didn't help. So I thought import xml.dom.minidom as mdom data = '&#174;' #Both accepted xml encodings for registered trademark data = '&reg;' text = mdom.Text() text.data = data print data print text.toxml() But because when I print text.toxml(), the ampersands are being escaped, I get this output: &reg; &amp;reg; My question is, does anybody know of a way that I can force the ampersands not to be escaped in the output, so that I can have my special character reference carry through to the XML document? Basically, for this node, I want print text.toxml() to produce output of &reg; or &#174; in a happy and cooperative way! EDIT 1: By the way, if minidom actually doesn't have this capacity, I am perfectly happy using another module that you can recommend which does. EDIT 2: As Hugh suggested, I tried using data = u'®' (while also using data # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- Python source tags). This almost helped in the sense that it actually caused the ® symbol itself to be outputted to my xml. This is actually not the result I am looking for. As you may have guessed by now (and perhaps I should have specified earlier) this xml document happens to be an HTML page, which needs to work in a browser. So having ® in the document ends up causing rubbish in the browser (® to be precise!). I also tried: data = unichr(174) text.data = data.encode('ascii','xmlcharrefreplace') print text.toxml() But of course this lead to the same origional problem where all that happens is the ampersand gets escaped by .toxml(). My ideal scenario would be some way of escaping the ampersand so that the XML printing function won't "escape" it on my behalf for the document (in other words, achieving my original goal of having &reg; or &#174; appear in the document). Seems like soon I'm going to have to resort to regular expressions! EDIT 2a: Or perhaps not. Seems like getting my html meta information correct <META http-equiv="Content-Type" Content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> could help, but I'm not sure yet how this fits in with the xml structure...

  • How do you pronounce the '...' operator

    - by Uri
    Now, in c++ '...' became a first class operator. In speech, how do you pronounce it? So far I've heard: dot dot dot triple dot ellipsis related: Is it OK to replace ... with ellipsis in writing? e.g. "The ellipsis operator expands the pack" EDIT (clarification): We are all aware that '...' as a punctuation mark is indeed called ellipsis. But in the context of C++ we don't pronounce the names of the punctuation mark. For example, the '&' operator, depends on the context is pronounced as 'and', 'bitwise and', 'address of', 'logical and' (when && is used), or 'reference'. It is rarely pronounced as 'ampersand'. In speeches, I've a feeling that 'dot dot dot' is used more often. For example: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/GoingNative/GoingNative-2012/Variadic-Templates-are-Funadic (an excellent presentation about variadic templates). On the other hand, 'dot dot dot' is awkward hard to pronouce ('d' and 't' are both pronounce with the tongue). Can we pronounce it 'unpack'?

  • Allow (and correct the URL) when there is a special character such as %26 using IIS and the rewrite module

    - by plumtreematt
    I'm struggling with a legacy app that uses special characters like %26 in the URL. The characters don't affect the app but can't be changed, so I'm trying to get IIS to deal with them. I've tried to ignore them using multiple methods, but nothing seems to work. So now I installed the IIS rewrite module and added a rewrite rule to web.config to replace the characters %26 with _, for example: <rewrite> <rules> <rule name="ampersand" patternSyntax="Wildcard" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="*%26*" /> <action type="Redirect" url="{R:1}_{R:2}" /> </rule> </rules> </rewrite> The problem is that IIS responds with "Bad Request" before the rewrite rule ever gets called. So my question is this: how can I change the order of precedence so that the mod rewrite filter will be called before IIS puts the ban hammer down on that URL?

  • PHP's SimpleXML not handling &#8217 ; properly

    - by Matty
    I'm parsing an RSS feed that has an &#8217; in it. SimpleXML turns this into a ’. What can I do to stop this? Just to answer some of the questions that have come up - I'm pulling an RSS feed using CURL. If I output this directly to the browser, the &#8217; displays as ’ which is what's expected. When I create a new SimpleXMLElement using this, (e.g. $xml = new SimpleXmlElement($raw_feed); and dump the $xml variable, every instance of &#8217; is replaced with ’. It appears that SimpleXML is having trouble with UTF-8 ampersand encoded characters. (The XML declaration specifies UTF-8.) I do have control over the feed after CURL has retrieved the feed before it's used to construct a SimpleXML element.

  • Trouble making OAuth signed requests

    - by behrk2
    Hello, I am able to successfully make non-authenticated and protected calls to the Netflix API. I am having a little trouble making signed requests to the catalog, however. Using the OAuth Test page, it is clear to me that my Base String is correct. My request URL is also correct, except for the oauth_signature. The oauth_signature is the only thing that differs. If I understand correctly, the only difference between a protected call and a signed call is that there are no tokens involved, and that I am appending on call parameters (such as term). So, I am using the exact same code that I use for my protected calls that I am for my signed calls, except my signature key ONLY contains my shared secret (with an ampersand sign on the end of it). It does not use the access token. Am I missing something here? Where else can I be going wrong? Thanks!

  • Getting ssh to execute a command in the background on target machine

    - by dagorym
    This is a follow-on question to the How do you use ssh in a shell script? question. If I want to execute a command on the remote machine that runs in the background on that machine, how do I get the ssh command to return? When I try to just include the ampersand (&) at the end of the command it just hangs. The exact form of the command looks like this: ssh user@target "cd /some/directory; program-to-execute &" Any ideas? One thing to note is that logins to the the target machine always produce a text banner and I have ssh keys set up so no password is required.

  • Emailing HTML from within an iPhone app is stopping at special characters

    - by user141146
    Hi, I have an iPhone app that will let users email some pre-determined text as HTML. I'm having a problem in that if the text contains special characters within the text (e.g., ampersand &, , <), the NSString variable that I use for sending the body of the email gets truncated at the special character. I'm not sure how to fix this (I tried using the method stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding…but this hasn't fixed the problems). Thoughts on what I'm doing wrong / how to fix it? Here is sample code showing what I'm trying to do Thanks!!! - (void)send_an_email:(id)sender { NSString *subject_string = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"Summary of %@", commercial_name]; NSString *body_string = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@<br /><br />", [self.dl email_message]]; // email_message returns the body of text that should be shipped as html. If email_message contains special characters, the text truncates at the special character NSString *full_string = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"mailto:?to=&subject=%@&body=%@", [subject_string stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding], [body_string stringByAddingPercentEscapesUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]]; [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[[NSURL alloc] initWithString:full_string]]; }

  • Php is stripping one letter "g" from my rtrim function but not other chars

    - by Chase
    I'm trying to trim some youtube URLs that I am reading in from a playlist. The first 3 work fine and all their URLs either end in caps or numbers but this one that ends in a lower case g is getting trimmed one character shorter than the rest. for ($z=0; $z <= 3; $z++) { $ythref2 = rtrim($tubeArray["feed"]["entry"][$z]["link"][0]["href"], '&feature=youtube_gdata'); The URL is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuE88oVCVjg&feature=youtube_gdata .. and it should get trimmed down to .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuE88oVCVjg but instead it is coming out as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuE88oVCVj. I think it may be the ampersand symbol but I am not sure.

  • IDispatchMessageInspector to log plain-text soap messages?

    - by Dan Thomas
    I've written a WCF IDispatchMessageInspector, so I can log incomming and outgoing messages. But I'm not sure how to get a nicely-formatted XML string to log. My code looks something like this: public object AfterReceiveRequest(ref Message request, IClientChannel channel, InstanceContext instanceContext) { MessageBuffer buffer = request.CreateBufferedCopy(Int32.MaxValue); request = buffer.CreateMessage(); Log("Received", request.ToString(); return null; } The result of this logging includes things like "ampersand lt;" and some sort of binary-encoded data. How do I get something that looks like a standard soap XML document? I know this should be obvious, but I'm just too dense to figure it out. Thanks. Dan

  • Newbie question: Creating a custom control

    - by Wild Thing
    Hi, I have an ASP.Net site, in which I am using a ListView with a Datapager. Apparently there is a bug with the Datapager, where it crashes if there is an empty ampersand (&) in the querystring. This is a known issue: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=357344&wa=wsignin1.0#tabs I see that there is a workaround given, but did not understand how to implement it. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Also, I see that this issue is marked as resolved. Any idea where I can find the updated version of this control? Wild Thing

  • ruby / rails boolean method naming conventions

    - by Dennis
    I have a short question on ruby / rails method naming conventions or good practice. Consider the following methods: # some methods performing some sort of 'action' def action; end def action!; end # some methods checking if performing 'action' is permitted def action?; end def can_action?; end def action_allowed?; end So I wonder, which of the three ampersand-methods would be the "best" way to ask for permissions. I would go with the first one somehow, but in some cases I think this might be confused with meaning has_performed_action?. So the second approach might make that clearer but is also a bit more verbose. The third one is actually just for completeness. I don't really like that one. So are there any commonly agreed-on good practices for that?

  • How would I strip an '&' symbol out of an ESRI dropdown before any of it's default control logic is

    - by Carter
    I have an ESRI dropdown control inside of an ESRI toolbar. One of the items in the dropdown needs to have an '&' symbol in it. As it turns out ESRI stuff builds it's callback strings as & delimited strings, so when an item is selected the parent toolbar immediately builds and handles the callback string. At one point it splits strings based on the '&' crashing the app. In effect, having an ampersand in an esri dropdown causes nasty stuff to happen when you select the item. What I need to do is find out how I can hop in before the callback stuff starts happening and strip that & out. I was thinking that perhaps I'd have to create a custom esri toolbar control, but I'm not sure and that'd be pretty undesirable. Any ideas?
