• How do I unlink a file-folder relationship?

  When asking IE to save an HTML page locally, with the option "Web page, complete", an html file is created along with a folder that contains all associated files (images, js, css etc). An association is created between the html file and the folder, so that when the file is deleted/moved, so is the folder. First, I'd like to know what this kind of association is called. Further, I'd like to know how to "unlink" this file-folder association.

• Missing pictures in folder

  I had a folder with some pictures, somehow these pictures are "missing" and I cannot see them anymore. The strange thing is that if I use the "preview" view in Explorer (the one that shows the tiny icons of the folder contents), the folder preview shows these pictures as if they were inside. Once I enter the folder, they are not there anymore. I tried showing hidden files and folders, that doesn't help. Any ideas on how to show or recover those files? I'm using Windows XP.

• Windows 7 Favorite folder doesn't work

  So recently I did a very stupid thing and accidentally deleted my APPDATA (LOL yes), and now the favorite folder doesn't work anymore. The favorite folder I am refering to is the one in windows explorer (not the horrid IE) in windows 7, which appears on the left of windows explorer windows. The %USERPROFILE%/Favorite folder still works correctly, but the favorite folder in the shell doesn't point there, instead it points to a nonexistant and broken location, how do i fix this problem?

  I want any third party(either commercial or Open source) folder lock application that protects file with password without hiding the files. The locked folder should be displayed to user as password protected folder, when user try to open the folder, it should ask password. When the user enters correct password it should open, otherwise it should throw an error. Is there any application with this quality? I searched a lot, but I could not find any.

• Windows Shares / NTFS permissions on folder redirection in Active Directory

  A client has folder redirection in AD setup on each user's Home Folder set to the Z:\ drive as \server\share\username. A Group Policy redirects the user's Documents to the user's Home Folder with the option 'Grant the user to exclusive rights to Documents' selected. The share on the server has permissions for the relevant user security group with 'Full Control', but each user's folder only have NTFS permissions only for 'CREATOR OWNER' and 'Domain Admins'. Why can the different users access other user's folders? I thought the most restrictive permissions applied effectively between the share and the NTFS permissions. Also, this setup has been like this for years, and this client recently updated all client computers to Windows 7. What is the best way to setup this redirection now? I assume only in Group Policy, also Basic Redirection - to create a folder for each user under the root path?

• Outlook 2010 Folder Structure Search

  I work at a helpdesk and today I received a call from a user who lost a folder in Outlook. When I connected to the user's PC, I discovered that the user has several hundreds of folders. She had the same name folder in several different locations. When we used Advanced Find we found the messages. It said that messages are located in folder X. The only problem was, we could not locate the folder X in the list. Does anyone know of any way to quickly and easily browse all the folders or look up a folder in Outlook 2010?

• Folder with files shows as empty

  Last night I create a new project in Visual Studio 2010, in the folder c:\development\hobby\devices. When I navigate to that folder in a new instance of Windows Explorer, I get the 'This folder is empty.' message in the files pane. If I then, from within Visual Studio, issue the "Open containing folder command", explorer opens to the folder c:\development\hobby\devices\LoopBack, where loopback is a project under the main folder. If I paste that path into another new instance of explorer, explorer correctly opens c:\development\hobby\devices. How is this possible? SOLVED: This is what comes of typing paths instead of selecting them. Some elementary detective work yielded the following interesting results: C:\>dir dev*. Volume in drive C is OS Volume Serial Number is E4B4-0563 Directory of C:\ 2010/11/28 09:20 PM <DIR> Development 2010/12/01 08:57 PM <DIR> Develpment 2010/11/02 06:31 PM <DIR> DevTools 0 File(s) 0 bytes 3 Dir(s) 63 965 368 320 bytes free Where my disappearing project was in the badly spelt one.

  I need a command that can be run from the command line to create a folder for each file (based on the file-name) in a directory and then move the file into the newly created folders. Example : Starting Folder: Dog.jpg Cat.jpg The following command works great at creating a folder for each filename in the current working directory. for %i in (*) do md "%~ni" Result Folder: \Dog\ \Cat\ Dog.jpg Cat.jpg I need to take this one step further and move the file into the folder. What I want to achieve is: \Dog\Dog.jpg \Cat\Cat.jpg Can someone help me with one command to do all of this?

• Problem in accessing Windows shared folder on Ubuntu using terminal

  Hi Guys, Description I have 2 systems with me, one running on Windows(Host) and one on Ubuntu, both on a LAN. On the Windows(Host) I develop software intended for the Linux system and because the Linux system has little external memory, my idea to overcome this is by making the project folder on the Host side a Shared Folder with full access and access it on Ubuntu over the network. To achieve this, I have installed Samba on Ubuntu, when I go to Places -> Network I can see the shared project folder and I simply mount it. A link appears on the desktop. Next, using Nautilus I open the link and I can access the contents of the shared folder. Problem Even though I mount the shared project folder, I don't see it appearing in the /media or the /mnt folder, as a result of this I don't know what path to use to access this folder, from the terminal. For example: When, I mounted my USB stick, as expected, a link for the device appears on the Desktop and I also see a folder in the media folder. So, similarly, a mounted shared folder should have appeared on the /mnt folder, too. Can anyone suggest what I should do now? There are many posts around, but no solid solution for this problem. • Estimating compressed file size using a list parameter

  I am currently compressing a list of files from a directory in the following format: tar -cvjf test_1.tar.gz -T test_1.lst --no-recursion The above command will compress only those files mentioned in the list. I am doing this because this list is generated such that it fits a DVD. However, during compression the compression rate decreases the estimated file size and there is abundant space left in the DVD. This is something like a Knapsack algorithm. I would like to estimate the compressed file size and add some more files to the list. I found that it is possible to estimate file size using the following command: tar -cjf - Folder/ | wc -c This command does not take a list parameter. Is there a way to estimate compressed file size? I am also looking into options like perl scripts etc. Edit: I think I should provide more information since I have been doing a lot of web search. I came across a perl script(Link)that sort of emulates the Knapsack algorithm. The current problem with the above mentioned script is that it splits the files in their original state. When I compress the files after splitting them, there are opportunities for adding more files which I consider to be inefficient. There are 2 ways I could resolve the inefficiency: a) Compress individual files and save them in a directory using a script. The compressed file could provide a best estimate. I could generate a script using a folder of compressed files and use them on the uncompressed ones. b) Check whether the compressed file's size is less than the required size. If so, I should keep adding files until I meet the requirement. However, the addition of new files to the compressed file is an optimization problem by itself.

• Folder Redirection Issues - Freezing, Strange Warnings

  I have Folder Redirection set up in a test environment for a couple accounts. I have followed the instructions for setting up the folder security settings here, and I can confirm that folders are created automatically by the system with the correct security settings when a user logs in. The GPO has been configured to automatically move user files up to the redirected folders, and this is working properly. Problems start occurring when a Windows 7 PC is in use. It is rare, but Explorer will lock up when performing a file write operation (move/copy/save from application). This results in the entire system being unusable, with only a hard reset resolving it (Task Manager doesn't start, the "three finger salute" does nothing, apps stop working). The mouse functions, but clicks do nothing. The other issue is that occasionally when copying/creating/modifying files a dialog box will pop up with the message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from XYZ\cardenas to make changes to this folder." The folder that was created by copying an existing one has the correct security settings and lists me as the owner. My company will not be implementing Folder Redirection on XP, since we are making a "clean break" with implementing new technologies with the Windows 7 rollout, so this behavior has not been - nor will be - checked for in XP.   I am aware that when using finder in List view, I can create a new folder by right-clicking on an empty row, and pressing 'New Folder'. However, when I happen to be browsing a folder with quite a lot of files (or just enough to invoke a scrollbar), there are no blank rows, and hence nowhere that I can right-click to create a new folder. This is not a big problem, I am just a whinger who likes consistency and find this frustrating. Yes, I am aware that I can press 'Shift + Cmd + N', or can simply change the Finder view. BUT, is there a way to do this within list view? Am I missing something obvious?

• Folder Disappeared In Outlook but is still searchable?

  Hi All currently having an issue where the personal folders in outlook seem to be disappearing. We have a folder called 0 Mail Filing, it seems to have disappeared, but doing a search for mail, it finds the mail and the folder is still in inbox/0 Mail Filing. Is there anyway to find the exact location, or get the folder back. We have checked all of the other subfolders and the folder is not in any of them. We are using Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2003. Thanks Jamie T

• OS X Enclosing folder shortcut?

  This may have been asked before, but I'm wondering whether there is a shortcut for navigating to the enclosing folder in OS X (Snow Leopard)? I find navigating Finder particularly frustrating since it's hard navigating back to the enclosing folder (especially when you jump to a folder and realize the back button is disabled)... I'm hoping for something other than Command+Up, since that's the key combination I use to navigate Spaces.

  I'm running Win XP SP3 on an IBM R50e laptop, and I just realized a folder named c8c6ac6192a47b59df in the root of my C:\ drive. I can see 2 folders in it named amd64 and i386. These two folders cannot be opened. XP says: c8c6ac6192a47b59df cannot be accessed. Access Denied. However, when I view the properties of the strangely-named folder, it shows 2 folders, 0 files, 0 bytes. I tried Unlocker to be able to unlock and delete the folder, but Unlocker says there are no handlers. What's this folder and how can I delete it?

• Monitoring folder diffs across servers with zabbix

  Problem: I want to make sure that a certain folder is equal regarding it's contents across my servers. I do not want an automatic filesync to keep them equal, changing is done manually. My initial thought was to once a day calculate some crc/hash on folder and send to Zabbix, and trigger when values differ. Is there any good tools out there that can calculate crc or similar of a folder? Anyone know of another solution that solves my problem?

  I am running Windows 7 and I have a folder "Dropbox" inside my Documents folder. However, every time I restart Explorer and enter this folder, it is sorted by mutation date. I'd like to have it default sorted by name, which is still default in all other folders, however not in this one. Please let me know if there is a way to define this properly! Thanks in advance! Note: I actually found out that this is in every folder or library now, not only in some folders. This is the standard sort behaviour when I open explorer the first time.

  Hi. I have been using Subversion for a few days now and have a question... I have a folder deep in my subversion trunk that I want to remove and replace with another folder. I have read about this on here and tried: Export: I clicked on the folder I wanted to remove I then created a new backup folder elsewhere when prompted I then exported Delete: I next chose the delete option (in TortoiseSVN) on the folder I wanted to remove and clicked it. The folder I want to remove now has an "X" over it as does all of the subfolders and files. But, when I go to the Subversion repository on the remote server, I still see the folder I want to remove and all of its files. What do I have to do to get the clients to forget about this folder and the Subversion server to remove it permanently from its sub-folders? Thanks in advance...

  How do you delete folders and files from the "Program Files" folder in Win 7? I am trying to do this on someone else's computer and I don't know what rights their user account is. It says that I don't have permission to delete the folder. I thought it was an administrator account because when I do "Run as Administrator" for other things it doesn't ask for a password, so it must be an administrator account. Should I be able to delete a folder out of "Program Files" if the account has administrator rights? Or do I need to do something else, such as "Take Ownership" of the folder.

I would like to edit the code so that instead of using the currently selected folder as the source for the messages, there would be a hard-coded folder - something like Set Messages = NS.Folders("Personal Folders").Folders("Moved"). I'm a VBA rookie and tried just replacing the Set Messages line with this which resulted in a Run-time error '13': Type mismatch which I think refers to a mismatch of the Dim Messages and the Set Messages commands. I've tried using different Dim definitions with no luck. I'm guessing that someone who knows VBA will see the way to do this right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
