• I'm on Charter's email blacklist, how do I get removed?

  I am a programmer in a local government agency. I found out today when I got to work that Charter Internet has blacklisted us for our mailing list that we run. This list is used for communicating news and alerts for our residents. Does anyone have a phone # I can use to contact Charter about this? Normally the email approach is fine, but we have yet another snow storm coming and 75 of our customers won't be alerted to a snow emergency if we have one and may possibly be towed as a result.

  Well, Saturday was my presentation on Programming with Windows Azure, and it went well. Everything worked as I had wanted and I got to everything that I had planned. I did not even need my emergency backup filler. I only hope that the folks who attended got something from it. As for the whole conference, I think it was a resounding success. There were a LOT of good sessions to attend and people to meet. I had a great time, and I look forward to next year with great anticipation. Kudos to all (Lee, Jonathan, Boon(?)) and all (Jasmine, Nathan) who put this on. Great job, everyone!

• Server costs and back loading for mobile devices

  A company approached me to design an MMO for the mobile platform and I have the perfect idea for them. My question is how much would a server for a FTP game that has both a PVE element and PVP cost? Also do you think that it would be better or is it even possible to back load the data onto the phones (trying to come up with some interesting way to back up the data in case of emergency). I don't want the game to be totally online reliant (I want to appeal to not only phone users but also iPod touch users) and for there to be an offline mode. If you can't tell this is my first game besides simple projects I've done on the side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• MySql Data Loss - post mortem analysis - RackSpace Cloud Server

  After a recent 'emergency migration' of a RS cloud server, the mysql databases on our server snapshot image proved to be days out of date from the backup date. And yet files that were uploaded through the impacted webapp had been written to the file system. Related metadata that was written to the database was lost, but the files themselves were backed-up. Once I was able to manually access the mysql data files before the mysql server started (server was configured to start mysql on boot), I was able to see that the update time for ib_logfile1, ib_logfile0 and ibdata1 was days old. As with this poster, mysql data loss after server crash, it's as if some caching controller had told the OS / mysql server that it had committed data that was still in cache, and it was lost instead of flushed. I can't quite wrap my head around how the uploaded files got written but the database data did not. I would have thought that any cache would have flushed system wide, rather than process by process. Any suggestions as to how this might have happened?

Leaving my websites central tables in the Primary file group. In the event of a restore, can I restore just the primary file group, and have a working database? Or do I have to restore both file groups? I don't want my site down for ages while it restores the 2nd file group.

Should I install the system native on the server or use a virt layer? I don't have a budget for virtualization so i gotta go with something free... What's a better working routine, taking snapshots of vm's or taking backups (Acronis/CloneZilla) of systems? • What are my options with a downloaded Rackspace cloud image?

  I've got an unresponsive Rackspace slice that has defied all attempts at accessing. I created an emergency image from this and deleted it, downloading the files that compromise the image to a local source. There are a number of files / assets I would still like to recover from this server if possible but not sure exactly what I can do with the image files, if anything.   I would like to add modularity to my websites on EC2 instances by encapsulating the site files and the mysql files in their own EBS volumes. The end result that I'm going for is the ability to quickly mount a volume or two to different servers running the same AMI (for testing/development/emergency maintenance, etc), as well as maintain separate snapshots of each. I'm able to do this fairly easily with a single database by symlinking my mounted database EBS to the appropriate places (/var/lib/mysql, /etc/my.cnf, /var/log/mysqld.log), but I'm not sure if it would even be possible be possible to have multiple databases on different EBS volumes running concurrently. Example: /website1/www.website.com /database1/ /website2/www.otherwebsite.com /database2/ Could anybody shed some light on this for me? Is it possible? Is it a bad idea? Thanks.

  Hi, I need to create a disk image from a Windows 2000, NTFS formatted, hard drive. This image has to be used to create backup hard drives to replace the original disk in case an emergency situation arises. This is a medical equipment, so I cannot physically disconnect the disk because I would violate the warranty of the equipment. This machine has a DVD R/W, ethernet and USB 2.0 access, and we have the rights to install any application I want in the Windows 2000 system. 1) Is there any way to do this without installing any new software in the Windows 2000 system, so it is the least invasive as possible? 2) If we have to install a software to do the backup, which software do you recommend?   Hello. I've a question: (I sent it in past) I have multipart rar file. Their contents are: file.part01.rar: myfolder (is a folder) data.cab -- file.part02.rar: myfolder (is a folder) data.cab <- file.part03.rar: myfolder (is a folder) data.cab <- file.part04.rar: difffolder (is a folder) anfolder (is a folder) data.cab <- file.part05.rar: myfolder (is a folder) data.cab <-- I want to extract it, so I right-click on "file.part01.rar" and select "Extract to ...". It extract 3 files, but in part 4, WinRAR said: "CRC. This file is currput." I think it problem is in the folders name in part04.rar. Is there anyway to rename folders in part04.rar? and cut "data.cab" from "afolder" to "difffolder". I really need it!! it is very emergency!!!!!!!! Thank you .....

• Using physical disk with VMware Workstation

  I am using VMware Workstation 9.0 under Windows 7 and trying to load my Linux from Physicaldisk0. And it boots, grub sees the two partitions on the disk (I checked in command line) and the kernel and the initrd loads and then it stops saying "device not found"and drops me into an emergency shell. Indeed there is absolutely nothing in /dev not the /sda device it expects not /hda nothing that looks like a disk. Edit: I can boot the Linux disk just fine if I boot it from BIOS and not as a VM. Edit2: The question is, how can I make this setup work?

  I was just browsing through the site and found this question: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY. Basically the question says: My server has been hacked. What should I do? The best answer is excellent but it raised some questions in my mind. One of the steps suggested is to: Examine the 'attacked' systems to understand how the attacks succeeded in compromising your security. Make every effort to find out where the attacks "came from", so that you understand what problems you have and need to address to make your system safe in the future. I have done no system admin work so I have no idea how I would start doing this. What would be the first step? I know that you could look in the server log files but as an attacker the first thing that I would do would be errasing the log files. How would you "understand" how the attacks succeeded?

• User account automatically filling up with dead.letter file

  I have one user account on a server with about 400 accounts that is filling up automatically. The dead.letter file in the users home directory automatically grows until the account is full (about 10 - 40 Mb per day). The user is using Microsoft Outlook to send and receive mail. What can be causing this and how can I avoid it from happening? Right now I have an emergency cron-job to delete the file but I would like "real" solution. Edit: The server version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 4) Edit 2: It seems mainly spam and I see different mailer headings (from php to Outlook Express) and a frequent appearing header is [email protected] Update: I have asked the hosting provider where I use that dedicated server to look into the problem as well, as it's their Control Panel that could be a cause of the problem.

• How to remove .htaccess virus? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY First time posting so bear with me please! My friend's site has been hacked and the .htaccess file (which I really know nothing about) has been injected with a malicious redirect that forces search engines to the see the site as a "harmful website." If you look at the .htaccess file you can see it's Russian or at least ends in .ru. Seeing as I know very little about this stuff, I simply tried to restore the good .htaccess file back with his host. This doesn't work as the virus just recreates the infected .htaccess file. When I searched through the rest of his directories, I can see the same bad .htaccess file in most of the folders. I can't seem to help him get rid of this virus.
