  I have Ubuntu 10.04 running gnome and two monitors. I am wondering if a can get a better multi-monitor configuration tool. The one I have, gnome-display-properties, has too many problems, including: when I swapped my monitors over, the narrower one now on the left. There is a width calculation error, such that I have a virtual monitor the width of the wide-monitor on the narrow-monitor and part of the wide monitor. And a virtual narrow-monitor on the remainder of the wide-monitor. I would like: nobugs. to be able to select which is primary monitor. to have multiple configurations. configurations to be automatically selected based on which monitors are attached. configurations to be cycled (reliably) when display mode key is pressed. when a display is deactivated, for windows to migrate to remaining monitors. option to not change display resolution when mirroring, but to use side/top blanking bars to pad out screen.

  Hey! I have 3 monitors, 2 24 inch and one 22 inch. The max resolution of the 24 inch monitors is 1920 x 1080 and the 22 is a bit less (can't remember right now). I read Jeff's post about the display port adapters and I was wondering if passive adapter would do the trick since neither of the monitors have big resolutions. Thanks

• Program for managing multiple monitors to keep from rearranging Windows

  I have a setup in use where I use up to four monitors. The problem is I generally switch around what I'm using and that messes up where all of my windows are. I'm on Windows 8 and have two graphics cards. My setup is as follows: Monitor 1: Card 1 Monitor 2: Card 1 Monitor 3: Card 2 TV 1: Card 2 I almost always have all the monitors turned on and in use. When I turn on the TV though, all of my windows get reconfigured and moved to different monitors. I don't know how to stop this. Another configuration I use is where I have Monitors 1 and 2 plus TV in use, and I have my Xbox in use on Monitor 3. When I get done with the Xbox and switch Monitor 3 over to the PC, everything is reconfigured. So is there a program out there that can help with this? I have the free version of Display Fusion in use but haven't seen settings to save monitor configurations.

  At my workplace .Net developers get pretty much the same equipment. A decent Dell workstation / Desktop, mine is a Dell Precision 390. One dual core 2.40 GHz. Eight GB RAM. Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. Two Dell 20.1 Monitors. I'm happy with this.  The machine is about 3 years old but still runs with some decent speed. New developers are getting a Dell workstation with dual quad processors. I just put in a request for myself and three other developers for an upgraded video card and two additional monitors, for a total of four monitors per person.  We suggested this card, BTW, mainly for the cost.  The move from one monitor to two was fantastic (one might even say life (or work) changing) and truly did increase productivity. Now what about going from 2 monitors to 4?  I'm sure the change is not as dramatic as one to two, but I can't help but to think four monitors is better than two.  But if four is better than two, should we have asked for six?!? Also what about mixing monitor types?  Right now my monitors are the older square type vs. wide-screen.  It's been rumored that we will be getting monitors out of current stock and they will be 22 inch wide-screens.  I understand this, recession and all.  2-20 inch square monitors with 2-22 inch wide-screen monitors...hmmmmm.  I'm thinking I'd rather get 2 additional 17 inch square monitors to put on each side of my 20's. Also, a question was raised about the layout of four monitors. By default, my thought was I'll just put them all on my desk, kinda in a line. I've heard others say they want to stack them in a 2 x 2 square. BTW, loving multi monitor support in Visual studio 2010! I’d love some comments on your experience with one, two, four, or however many monitors from a developers perspective.

  The problem happens on multiple machines in our office. All of them run on Nvidia graphics cards and all use Windows Vista. Sometimes we can get the dormant monitor to wake up by hitting ctrl+alt+delete, waiting 5 seconds, then hitting escape. But, sometimes we're forced to reboot. Anyone else experience this problem and have a fix?

• Dock with dual external DVI monitors with Intel + Nvidia Optimus?

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop plugged into a docking station, and the dock has 2 monitors (connected with DVI). Also note that I've installed Ubuntu alongside (dual-boot) Windows 7. I can't get the dual monitors to work both on Ubuntu (either 11.10 or 12.04) and Windows 7. When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF108 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) If I then reboot and uncheck Optimus setting in the BIOS during reboot, I'm able to get the dual monitors to work in Ubuntu 12.04 (but I need to configure them every boot in Nvidia Settings). When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) But then if I reboot into Windows (leaving the Optimus unchecked), Windows can't detect external monitors, and the resolution is unacceptably low. I've seen on many forum posts that this particular graphics card setup causes lots of headaches. I haven't been able to resolve my problem yet. How can I use my external display on my laptop with intel and nvidia video cards? How to use external displays with Intel driver on a NVidia/Intel hybrid system nVidia Optimus , Unity 3D and Dual Monitors "Just use VGA instead of DVI" isn't an option because my dock has only 1 VGA port (and 2 DVI). Switching the BIOS setting on every reboot and then reconfiguring the display settings every time is tedious, time-consuming, and impractical. Do you know how to make this work smoothly? • Mac, VNC and multiple monitors

  I asked a similar question here before but apparently I wasn't as clear as I had expected by the responses. That said, I'll try again. I have a Mac Pro with quad monitors which I would like to access remotely. I've been using VNC for this (either via screen sharing or a dedicated VNC client), which works, but the VNC protocol matches the physical layout/resolutions of attached monitors. One of the things I like about Microsoft's Remote Desktop (Terminal Server) client is that when you connect, it blanks out the local screens and sets the resolution to a client-specified setting. In other words, when natively running Windows, even though I'm running a physical 30" monitor flanked by 2 24" monitors as well as a 21" Cintiq monitor, I can set the Remote Desktop resolution to match my notebook's screen giving me a native, single-monitor configuration. As soon as I disconnect (and you log back in locally), the desktop un-blanks and the resolution resets back to the four physically attached monitors. Again, VNC works and yes I know I can use 5901, 5902...n to attach VNC to a specific monitor as opposed to the entire desktop, but I'm still at the mercy of trying to look at a 2560x1600 resolution on a 1280x800 screen. I'm left with either scaling (everything's too small) or panning/scrolling (it's like playing hide-and-seek with your documents!) SO... anyone know of any Mac-based remote software (client and server) that will let me connect to my Mac Pro and reset the resolution by the client, just like you can in Windows, or am I SOL?

• Problem mirroring two monitors with different resolution

  Hello I am trying to put two monitors in mirror mode (Windows 7 Professional) with Ultramon 3.1.0. The two monitors: Main monitor: 24" Asus. 1680x1050 resolution (16/10). Secondary monitor: 19" LG. 1280x1024 resolution. The graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have installed the Ultramon 3.1.0 and I have created a mirror, with the "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" and the "disable video overlays and 3D acceleration". When I start the mirroring, there are two zones in the lateral edges that are not displayed in the second monitor. I think this is because the width of the main monitor is 1680 px. and the width of the secondary monitor is 1280 px., but I have indicated "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" in the options. The same occurs in the top and the bottom edges, but the diference is minimal (1050 vs 1024 pixels). I want the same image (distortioned in the secondary monitor if is neccesary), but I don't know what is failing. Someone can help me, please? I have read Mirrored monitors of different resolution. • RDP with multiple monitors, display preferences get reset?

  Problem: When I connect to my pc at the office via RDP all the application windows I had previously carefully placed on either monitor 1 or 2 will be "scrambled". Either all applications show on monitor 1 and monitor 2 is empty, or they have switched 1 <- 2. Expected behaviour: When I connect I see all the application windows on exactly the same position and in the exact same size as I left them the night before. I have the exact same monitors at home as I have at work: Primary 2560x1440, Secondary 900x1440. Yesterday I tried switching the physical cables on the host machine hoping that the hardware order of the monitors was the difference. But this morning my secondary monitor was completely blank, not even the taskbar (which I had set to ONLY show on the secondary). Somewhere there must be something to help Windows understand which physical monitor is which virtual RDP monitor is which RDP "server" monitor... Are there more options than switching the cables? This one has been bothering me for a long long time now, I hope someone has a solution or workaround for me. Edit I want to use both monitors, so I have checked the "Use all monitors" setting in the RDP client. For example I leave my mail and total commander on the right monitor, and visual studio and Firefox on the left monitor. When I connect to RDP I want to see those applications on the same positions and sizes.

• Usability Problems with RDP and Dual Monitors

  Hi All, When I RDP into a win2k3 machine with the dual mon settings, I've noticed that there are a couple of usability problems: 1) Dialog boxes are popped up right in the middle of both monitors making it hard to read. 2) Windows are maximized to both monitors instead of just one. 3) The task bar spans across two monitors. (This is just a matter of preference. I prefer my task bar to span across just my primary monitor) I know that Splitview is a good tool that solves all these problems, but there's a price-tag to it. To be fair, $39 for a tool like this is not too bad at all. However, before I suggest this tool to my team and manager to get the licenses for it, are there any free alternatives that will solve the 3 above problems? -Steve

  I have a laptop mounted to a dock. When I try to use 2 monitors using dualview everything works fine I get my image across 2 monitors, but when I connect the third one I can't use it although its recognized. Here's what I'd like to do, I'd like to get dual view from my laptop across two monitors, and I have a remote machine connecting to it via remote desktop. I'd like to have that displayed on the third monitor. Is that possible? or some other combination?

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. • nVidia Driver - Laptop is forced as one of my monitors

  I am trying to get my nVidia Driver to correctly configure my multi-monitor setup. I have my laptop in a docking station and two monitors hooked up to it. I had an old driver that this worked correctly with. However, that driver was causing a lot of "Deferred Procedure Calls" so I upgraded to a newer driver. But now I am forced to use my Laptop monitor as one of my monitors. Here is the image in the nVida Control Panel: As you can see, both monitors are recognized, but the only options available are to use one of them with the Laptop Display. Any Ideas? I am running Windows XP (latest updates), I have an nVidia Quadro 1500M. I have tried several different driver versions and all the new ones have this issue.

  I have a Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 laptop running windows 7 Ultimate with one VGA port and one HDMI port. It has one Intel HD Graphics family card and one NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Right now I have one monitor running via the VGA port, and also the basic laptop monitor. When I look at the monitor setup, I see one unused video card available. Can I have another monitor via the HDMI port? If I cannot run three monitors, is there some way I could make a large "single" desktop that extends over two monitors? For the sake of celerity, maybe something like having a virtual machine window that extends over two monitors. Could this maybe come from third party software?

• Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

  I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer. • an issue with VMWare Workstation 10 and three monitors

  I'm having a bit of a problem with using three monitors with VMWare Workstation 10. When only two monitors are enabled in the system I have an option to "Cycle Multiple Monitors", available from the View menu (in full screen). When I enable the third monitor that option is no longer in the menu and I can only use one monitor at a time. I've found this article and a "Choose a Monitor Layout" button is mentioned there but I'm unable to see it anywhere. I'm using Windows 8.1 as the host and Ubuntu 14.04 as the guest. The graphics card is AMD Radeon R9 290x with latest beta drivers

  Does anyone know of any software/hardware configuration that will allow you to preview/view the contents multiple monitors on one monitor? Let's pretend: I have two monitors hooked up to one pc, Monitor A and Monitor B. The monitors are not near each other. I'd like to be able to preview/see what's displaying on Monitor B on Monitor A I haven't been able to find much about this, but I imagine it may not currently be possible to access/emulate video output going out of a video port in software. However, wouldn't it be possible to capture display data generated by the OS kernel or data getting passed down to the display adapter driver?

• Multi monitor setup with a tv as well?

  I have always had a dual monitor setup for my pc's for years now. I am now in the market to build a new PC and get some new stuff. I need some help or advice on how to run 3 monitors WITH a 4th display which will be a lcd/plasma tv. So I am thinking I can get 2 video cards and that will give me all the hookups to run 3 monitors instead of 2. I will mount all 3 monitors in a row side by side and above them on the wall I would like to mount a larger 30-40+ inch lcd or plasma tv. I would then like to hook up my atelite/cable to this tv just as I would normally hook up a tv but I would like to also be able to have an option to view my PC o this tv as well. I know that is possible but would it be possible to view my PC on that tv and also still view my 3 other monitors and have the TV be a 4th display, where I could dock a different app/window in windows in all 4 displays (3 monitors + tv) ?? Please tell me any tips/advice on how to do this including what cables/software if any/converters/ you name it. Thanks for any help

So I ordered one, and have connected three monitors, but I can only enable two at a time. It can be both of the ones connected by DisplayPort, or one of the ones connected by DisplayPort and the one connected by VGA. Does anyone know whether it really is possible to enable all three at once, and if so, how?

I have now two connections on my ATI graphic card: a VGA and newly added a DVI one. like this: Sine that, I need to start my computer with monitors powered ON, because if I do it after, thay does not "get up" and says that is "no video entry". Also, if I switch OFF my monitors when computer works, switching ON lets them in the sleep state... How can I fix this issue.

  Does anyone know a good matching monitor setup for multiple displays? Looking for 1920 x 1200 with IPS panel as the main screen and some 1600 x 1200 monitor for the side but no single manufacturer seems to make monitors that match like this. Do you all just deal with the resolution and size differences in multi setups or has anyone found decent IPS panel setups that match (size / vertical resolution)? Three 1920x1200 seems like overkill, that's why I was looking for 4:3 monitors for the sides.
