  • Stop Picasa (Mac) from scanning my harddrive

    I want to use Picasa desktop app instead of the tedious & clunky web interface to share a couple of photos. Every time I launch Picasa it proceeds to open an annoying pop-up/tool-tip which flicks through every file on my HD using <=95% of CPU. I don't want this so I click the X. It appears again. I try to drag it somewhere less annoying onscreen but it pings back. I look in prefs for an option to turn it off. I give up and quit app until a new build comes out, which I download and repeat the above. WTF?! I understand Google can't be as cool as Apple - iPhoto isn't perfect by any means but at least it looks nice and 'just works'. I want to launch Picasa, not have it go through everything, not have 1000's of random pics and HD cruft on display in the list, and then perhaps drag in a few photos and upload them. Any idea of if that is possible? </rant>

    I have found that the local school's website installed a Perl Calendar - this was years ago, it has not been used for ages, but Google has it indexed (which is how I found it) and it full of Viagra links and the like ... program was by Matt Kruse, here is details of the exploit: http://www.securiteam.com/exploits/5IP040A1QI.html I've got the school to remove that, but I think they also have MySQL installed and I'm aware that out-of-the-box there have been some exploits of Admin Tools / Login in old versions. For all I know they also have PHPBB and the like installed ... The school is just using some cheap, shared hosting; the HTTP response header I get is: Apache/1.3.29 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) Chili!Soft-ASP/3.6.2 mod_ssl/2.8.14 OpenSSL/0.9.6b PHP/4.4.9 FrontPage/5.0.2.2510 I'm looking for some means of checking if they have other junk installed (quite possibly from way back, and now unused) that might put the site at risk. I'm more interested in something that can scan for things like the MySQL Admin exploit rather than open ports etc. My guess is that they have little control over the hosting space that they have - but I'm a Windows DEV, so this *nix stuff is all Greek to me. I found http://www.beyondsecurity.com/ which looks like it might do what I want (within their evaluation :) ) but I have a worry about how to find out if they are well known / honest - otherwise I will be tipping them a wink with a Domain Name that may be at risk!   • Software for scanning installation process?

    I forgot what is the name of the very good software which make some kind of restore point (save registry, and program files folder, etc...) before installing any software. After you install some program (ie "Notepad++") you can easily see what registry data use new installed program, on what location are the file's is stored and many more. The reason that I'm asking for help is that I have to automate some installation of public software, so after installation I need to uninstall it, so i have to delete all junk files. The software is called something like install wizard, or wizard install I forgot. If you have any idea of other application that do same thing , or you know exactly name of that software, or you have some good idea how to solve easy solve many installation and uninstallation, please let me know.   • Scanning for new disks attached using virtio?

    I can successfully attach disks to a running KVM instance using virsh attach-disk... virsh attach-disk node-1 /dev/vg_lunsr/lun1 vdb Disk attached successfully ...but these new devices aren't seen by the guest without a reboot, which almost defeats the purpose of dynamic attachment. If these were SCSI devices I would use e.g. /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan to request the SCSI drivers to scan for new devices. Is there an equivalent capability for the virtio block driver?

    I have an Mp980 Canon Printer, which includes a scanner and it came with some software that allows you to scan directly to a PC with out transferring it using USB drive. But the software is big and bulky, and it includes things like printing photo editing and things I can't be bothered with. Are there any smaller alternatives to this software?

  • Scanning php uploads in tmp directory with clamdscan fails

    I can't seem to get this thing to work, some permission problem maybe, but i can't even run clamdscan normally form console with root the result is always Permission denied. for example i create a file test.txt (eicar file) in /tmp and execute "clandscan /tmp/test.txt" in console logged in as root and i get "/tmp/test.txt: Access denied. ERROR ". The clamd demon is running with user clamav could that be the reason? Now i want to scan the same file (/tmp/test.txt) via php , so i run (i have chowned the file to apache:apache ) $cmd="clamdscan /tmp/test.txt"; exec($cmd,$a,$b); i get error 127 i try with the full path of the command /usr/bin/clamdscan i get error 126 (command is found but is not executable), this means that apache doesn't have the permission to execute /usr/bin/clamdscan ? what could be the problem?

    I see lot of tcp connections on different ports on my server with 'TIME_WAIT' status. Just simple port scan, but i cant see ip address of this bastard because connections is going from my nginx. Can you please give me a tip how can i see IP address of this bastard?   • Different Results of Scanning Wireless Networks

    Hi, I found that under Ubuntu, WICD and command "/sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan" give a little different list of wireless networks. Windows 7 also gives a slightly different list. For example, there is one shown in WICD but not in the command nor in Windows 7. I wonder why? How to get a complete list of wireless networks? Thanks and regards!

  • Scanning to network share

    In our environment we have several printers with the scan to folder functionality set up. It worked pretty well. Long story short- I needed to reboot our file server one evening (the server whose $hares where all the scans go), upon on boot up I received a message stating the name of the file server (i.e AcmeFS1; Windows Server 2003) could not be used because there was a duplicate name on the network. I found that somehow another printer on the network was using the name of the file server. Weird - I know. People could no longer scan to their folders. I ran an nbtstat on the file server and found that the local netbios name table was empty. I renamed the offending printer and rebooted the file server once more. This time, no error, and once I ran nbtstat again, I found that correct name and domain in the local netbios name table. Problem is, scan to folder is still not working. I know this was working before I rebooted the file server the first time. Anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix? Thanks. FIXED: Not sure why the reboot didnt fix it but I restarted the "Server" service on the file server and the problem went away.

  • Converting massive images to PDF, without crashing applications

    I'm trying to work with a large-format scanner, and we are scanning very long documents. Example, one of our documents we cut into two pieces, and one of those pieces is 3633x82486 in resolution. My application, Scanning Master 21+, which comes with the device (Graphtec CSX300-09) can output PDF, however when I try to save to PDF it complains about file being too large. I can successfully output to BMP however. GIMP can even open this BMP, after taking a while to load it. The resulting files range from 200MB - 1.2GB in size. Acrobat refuses to open the BMP format, saying it isn't supported or is damaged (which I know is not true). As I mentioned, the PDF plugin for GIMP crashes when I try to export to PDF. I'm really not sure what is the best tool for this job. So what is the best tool to produce PDF documents of very large images?

    I have a FileSystemWatcher monitoring a directory that receives TIF files from a scanning device. Its necessary to check if the scanning process is done and then read a multipage TIF file, otherwise, the FileSystemWatcher will raise the event before the file be fully scanned. I have something like: private void OnFileCreated(...) { while(IsFileLocked(path)) Thread.Sleep(time); // OK to read } This is what is happening: - Scanner creates the file - FileSystemWatcher detects the file, but its in use - Scanner reads the first page to the file - Scanner releases the file - My code leaves the while(FileInUse(path)) - My code reads the incomplete file (problem) - Scanner adds more pages to the file Let's say the scanner is scanning 100 pages, then, when "OK to read", the file will be incomplete (99 pages left). So, its necessary to know if the file is complete or not. Maybe waiting some time to see if the file is modified, but this time span can be up to hours, because the scanner can get idle scanning the same TIF. Other solution would be checking some flag in the TIF file that indicates that the file is not complete(I've looked for this but don't found anything).

  • Scanning FedEx labels into a visual basic program

    I have a program that has tracking numbers entered into it and it stores them in a database and i would like to add a scanner to the mix. The scanner is acting like a keyboard and scannes just fine, the problem is scanning a FedEx number gives a 32 digit number and i am only iterested in the tracking number portion of it. I saw an example on the web for an excel macro and tried to modify it but it doesnt seem to work. Is there something i could do to just get the 12 digit number? This is what it looks like so far.   • Port scanning using threadpool

    I am trying to run a small app that scans ports and checks to see if they are open using and practicing with threadpools. The console window will ask a number and scans ports from 1 to X and will display each port whether they are open or closed. My problem is that as it goes through each port, it sometimes stops prematurely. It doesn't stop at just one number either, its pretty random. For example it I specify 200. The console will scroll through each port then stops at 110. Next time I run it, it stops at 80. Code Left out some of the things, assume all variables are declared where they should.   • Hooking up a multifunction printer via network and USB

    I have a Dell 2155CDN Multifunction printer that is hooked up through our network. But when using the scan feature, it is terribly slow, and I assume it has something to do with it scanning through the network port. Is it possible to leave the printer hooked up across the network, but also attach it to a computer via USB just for the scanner? Or would doing this confuse the printer not knowing which port to use for each feature?

HP Deskjet F2235 - designated scanner (has printing issues) Brother HL-2040 - designated printer (doesn't have a scanner) Just by using those two both connected to the same computer, is there a way to perform a photocopy operation by scanning via the designated scanner then immediately it being printed from the designated printer? Obviously you could save the scanned files then print them, but short of making a script or manually doing this, is there a faster automatic way through settings or third-party software?

    Hi, I just got a Lexmark x543dn and have some trouble getting my computer to recognize it as a scanner. The printer is working fine from my OS X 10.6 machine, setup was as easy as it gets. I just connected it to my network, gave it a name and added it under that name as a networked printer in OS X. According to the Apple support website, the driver in OS X (I upgraded to the newest drivers already) should also provide scanning capabilities. However when I run the image capture app included in OS X it tells me that there are no scanners available. Can anybody tell me what I have to do to get OS X to recognize the scanner? Thanks, Thomas

  • Using Credentials with network scanners

    I'm testing out both Tenable's Nessus scanner as well as eEye's Retina for scanning network devices. I am trying to supply credentials to get deeper, more accurate results, however there seems to be no difference in the results whether I supply the credentials or not. I've read the documentation and it seems like I've tried all the logical settings in the Credential options. I've submit along with usernames and passwords for many different accounts and types of accounts (both SSH Credentials and Web Application Credentials) on the devices as well as their respective domain names (when applicable). Is there possibly a good test for either (or both) scanners to tell where these credentials are being provided (if at all) and if any of them are successfully getting authentication?

  • Need recommendations for a hardy scanner that has a robust feeder tray

    In the early days of our company all our information came in on paper and all of what we sold was on paper. Because of this we literally rent our an old bank vault to house the millions of sheets of paper that, some say, still contain relevant information. That being said, I'm looking into purchasing some hardware capable of scanning all these documents and converting them to pdf. Being new at this level of digitization I would like to ask for recommendations for accomplishing this task. Most of this material exists as separate bound studies/articles/etc. Someone would have to remove the bindings and be able to load many pages at a time and have the scanner feed them all through and convert them to a single pdf (single pdf per study/article/etc). If you have any recommendations I would very much appreciate hearing about them, thanks.
