    About a month ago on one of my servers I started receiving random packets from IPs all over the world. So I did the smart thing and stopped putting off installing an IDS. This IDS is a ClearOS Gateway which comes with Snort and SnortSam. I enabled it, checked There is a total of 4 ports open, two of which forward to the server I'm talking about. These ports are 3724 and 8085, so they aren't going to be easily detected in a port scan. However checking some logs of this server I found that the attack is resuming. I found this ...     My parents have a number of really large albums and the pictures are starting to face in a lot of cases so we thought it would be a good idea to scan in all the pictures and move them to online albums. The issue is that the task is daunting given that there are thousands of pictures. Are there any services or ideas on how to scan in albums of pictures that won't take up hundreds of man hours for me?

  • Can't get nmap to work under Windows 7 64 bit

    I'm trying to install and run the nmap tool to test my server, but it keeps saying Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probes, try -P0 and showing all the server ports are closed. Which is not true - the server is up and has lots of open ports. Any ideas? UPDATE: Just to clarify - the server can be pinged and port-scanned fine by other programs. It's juts nmap that does not work. Even "google.com" seems to be down for nmap.

  • Ways to improve completeness of files for data recovery and scanning?

    I am using R-studio for data recovery on one of my ntfs partition. There is a pdf file about 16MB, but the software can only recover 15MB of it. So I am thinking about what ways can be used to improve the quality of scanning and recovery by the software? I am looking around its preferences. I am not quite sure whether there are some adjustable parameters for scanning and recovery which can be fine-tuned to improve the quality? R-studio has a free demo version, for which scanning is free,but recovery isn't.   • Proper way to scan a range of IP addresses

    Given a range of IP addresses entered by a user (through various means), I want to identify which of these machines have software running that I can talk to. Here's the basic process: Ping these addresses to find available machines Connect to a known socket on the available machines Send a message to the successfully established sockets Compare the response to the expected response Steps 2-4 are straight forward for me. What is the best way to implement the first step in .NET? I'm looking at the System.Net.NetworkInformation.Ping class. Should I ping multiple addresses simultaneously to speed up the process? If I ping one address at a time with a long timeout it could take forever. But with a small timeout, I may miss some machines that are available. Sometimes pings appear to be failing even when I know that the address points to an active machine. Do I need to ping twice in the event of the request getting discarded? To top it all off, when I scan large collections of addresses with the network cable unplugged, Ping throws a NullReferenceException in FreeUnmanagedResources(). !? Any pointers on the best approach to scanning a range of IPs like this?

  • Best way to pan & scan images with jquery

    Hello, I am trying to make an image pan & scan system. I have a slider that zooms the image (that can be dragged) and also a small map in the corner of the image (that can also be dragged). You can see a rough example here (sorry, I am not allowed to use the design, so it's not formatted): http://lighe.madetokill.com/test/test.html My problem is that although it works great in firefox and opera, it stutters in chrome, safari and IE (it doesn't currently work in IE) at any zoom level except 100% (at 100% it's butter smooth). What is the reason for webkit's poor performance? Am I implementing this wrong? I am basically changing the margin-left and margin-top properties of the image. I know this is fast enough since at 100% it's perfectly smooth. Would I be better off using canvas? I am trying to avoid flash (or any other plugins) if possible. Also please note this is work in progress, there are other bugs except this, so do not bother with those :) Thanks in advance!

    I have been tasked with integrating image acquisition into a .NET application and I have been looking for an API to use for performing this function. I have come across several "standard" APIs, some have been in existence for a long time, some not so long. I have looked at references to ISIS, TWAIN, WIA, and SANE (said to be mostly *nix). They all appear to be Win32 libraries except for SANE, and I was wondering what the current recommendations are for talking to image acquisition devices (scanners)? Feel free to recommend something else if you feel it is better. I'm looking for open source options. Edit: I put open source, when what I actually meant was free. using WIA or TWAIN is fine since they are free even though they are proprietary interfaces.

    I am having issues with a port scanner I'm editing to use threads.   • I just got a linode VPS a week ago and I've been flagged for SSH scanning...

    I got a 32-bit Debian VPS from http://linode.com and I really haven't done any sort of advanced configuration for securing it ( port 22; password enabled ). It seems somehow there is ssh scanning going on from my IP, I'm being flagged as this is against the TOS. I've been SSHing only from my home Comcast ISP which I run Linux on. Is this a common thing when getting a new vps? Are there any standard security configuration tips? I'm quite confused as to how my machine has been accused of this ssh scanning.

  • How to configure amavisd-new for only scanning on particular senders/servers?

    I'd like to know how to configure amavisd-new to only scan for Spam on particular clients (IPs, CIDRs or hostnames) or alternatively sender's email domain. I know that it is possible to do it on a recipient's mail address but not on how to do it for the sender's mail address. It is even possible to do it on a recipient's IP address with policy banks. But my approach should be to be independent of recipient and only relay on the sender. What I want to accomplish is to only scan mails originating from Yahoo, Google, Hotmail and the other big senders. So it is easier to configure which senders should be observed than the ones that shouldn't. I known that it is easier to achieve on the MTA side, but that is not part of the question because I already go a solution on the MTA side. I want to do it on amavisd-new. And it doesn't help to know how to put senders on a whitelist, as this still means that the mail goes through all the scanning but then gets a high negative score. The mail shouldn't be scanned at all unless sent by the big players. So which parameters in amavisd-new is the right one to enable scanning for particular senders and only for these?

  • Linux Fiber Channel Host Setup Basic

    I've been googling for about 4 hours now with no luck. I am trying to setup a Linux server running Oracle Server 6.3 as a Fiber Channel host. And then connect it to a Dell Compellent Fibre Channel Host contain a 500GB Volume. The Oracle server itself contains two Brocade 815 FC HBAs. I've discovered their WWN(I think) via cat /sys/class/fc_host/host1/port_name 0x100000051efc3d85 cat /sys/class/fc_host/host2/port_name 0x100000051efc3d9f The next part is where I am at a loss. I've used iSCSI before...is FC the same deal where you have an initiator and a target? If so where do I specific that in linux? I'm also new to Fiber Channel as a protocol, so i am unsure what is needed to make a transaction? WWN and port ID? Similar to IP:Port combination in the Ethernet world. I've read alot regarding using systool, multipath, fc_transport commands, however none of these is recognized as a valid command from Oracle Server 6.3 Appreciate the guidance and assistance.   • Is there a standard pattern for scanning a job table executing some actions?

I have the relatively common scenario of a job table which has 1 row for some thing that needs to be done. For example, it could be a list of emails to be sent. The table looks something like this: ID Completed TimeCompleted anything else... ---- --------- ------------- ---------------- 1 No blabla 2 No blabla 3 Yes 01:04:22 ... I'm looking either for a standard practice/pattern (or code - C#/SQL Server preferred) for periodically "scanning" (I use the term "scanning" very loosely) this table, finding the not-completed items, doing the action and then marking them completed once done successfully. In addition to the basic process for accomplishing the above, I'm considering the following requirements: I'd like some means of "scaling linearly", e.g. running multiple "worker processes" simultaneously or threading or whatever. (Just a specific technical thought - I'm assuming that as a result of this requirement, I need some method of marking an item as "in progress" to avoid attempting the action multiple times.) Each item in the table should only be executed once. Some other thoughts: I'm not particularly concerned with the implementation being done in the database (e.g. in T-SQL or PL/SQL code) vs. some external program code (e.g. a standalone executable or some action triggered by a web page) which is executed against the database Whether the "doing the action" part is done synchronously or asynchronously is not something I'm considering as part of this question.

    I want to create an application for Android that will be able to scan barcodes, get the information contained within the barcode and then be able to use that information in some way.   • How do I get bison/flex to restart scanning after something like token substitution?

    Is there a way to force bison and/or flex to restart scanning after I replace some token with something else? My particular example would be with replacement for a specific word/string. If I want a word of hello to be replaced by echo hello, how can I get flex or bison to replace hello and then start parsing again (to pick up 2 words instead of just one). So it would be like: Get token WORD (which is a string type) If hello, replace token value with echo hello Restart parsing entire input (which is now echo hello) Get token WORD (echo) Get token WORD (hello) I've seen very tempting functions like yyrestart(), but I don't really understand what that function in particular really accomplishes. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
