• Overhead of serving pages - JSPs vs. PHP vs. ASPXs vs. C

  I am interested in writing my own internet ad server. I want to serve billions of impressions with as little hardware possible. Which server-side technologies are best suited for this task? I am asking about the relative overhead of serving my ad pages as either pages rendered by PHP, or Java, or .net, or coding Http responses directly in C and writing some multi-socket IO monster to serve requests (I assume this one wins, but if my assumption is wrong, that would actually be most interesting). Obviously all the most efficient optimizations are done at the algorithm level, but I figure there has got to be some speed differences at the end of the day that makes one method of serving ads better than another. How much overhead does something like apache or IIS introduce? There's got to be a ton of extra junk in there I don't need. At some point I guess this is more a question of which platform/language combo is best suited - please excuse the in-adroitly posed question, hopefully you understand what I am trying to get at.

  I'm writing a controller helper that sets the proper response headers for my REST controller action. It's pasted below and should be simplified enough for those who aren't familiar with Zend Framework to understand what I'm doing. My question is: Are these codes correct for their respective responses, and in the case of "access denied" do I use a 401 or 403?   While reading a file (ifstream), is there any way to direct it to make a new line? For instance, I would like for THIS to happen: myfilearray[1]array[2]endl; Obviously, the "endl" just isn't allowed. Is there another way to do this? Edit---thanks for the quick responses guys! From a text file, I'm trying to store two strings from that file into arrays and then do the same with the next line (or until I desire, using a for loop) Using strings is important to me as it will make my future program a lot more flexible.

  Basically, I am attempting to render an external website (the url of which is stored in the database) into a page in my Ruby on Rails app. I have a field in my model 'search' called 'search' that contains web addresses with the form 'www.example.com' or 'example.com'. I am trying to use a link_to_function call with replace_html to replace the 'maincontent' div with an iframe tag using the value of 'search' in the current instance as the src for the tag. My current attempt is the very ugly code below. I'd be grateful for either of the following types of responses: How can I rewrite the concatenation string to work correctly? How can I get the same effect (replacing the current content of the "mainContent" div with an iframe tag using a different method? • Can An Android Appliction Be Launched Without a Main Activity?

  I have verified that an App does not need a Main Activity, and in fact does not need any activities. Thanks for the responses on this. But here is another question. Is there any way to launch an application without a main activity declared? If the answer is no, then I have a follow up, can the MAIN action be removed from the application at runtime after launch so that the app no longer has a MAIN activity after launch? Or even can the activity itself be entirely removed from the application at runtime if it is no longer needed. Thanks.

  Hi Folks, I am successful to map an external directory by creating an xml file like : <Context path="/uploads" docBase="C:\uploads\photos" crossContext="true"/> And I named this xml file as uploads.xml and saved under "#Tomcat\conf\Catalina\localhost" here # = Directory where Tomcat has been installed. And when I start Tomcat(5) from cammand line (batch file) i.e. startup.bat The images can be accessed normally like "http://localhost:8080/uploads/user1.png" It works. Actually I am using IntelliJ Idea 8 for devevelopment. When I start Tomcat from IntelliJ Idea, I am not able to access the context i.e. the images. "http://localhost:8080/uploads/user1.png" It shows "HTTP 400 Bad Request" The context path for my project is "http://localhost:8080/spark/" Any help or suggestion is needed at the earliest time.   I have a survey database with one column for each question and one row for each person who responds. Each question is answered with a value from 1 to 3. Id Quality? Speed? -- ------- ----- 1 3 1 2 2 1 3 2 3 4 3 2 Now, I need to display the results as one row per question, with a column for each response number, and the value in each column being the number of responses that used that answer. Finally, I need to calculate the total score, which is the number of 1's plus two times the number of 2's plus three times the number of threes. Question 1 2 3 Total -------- -- -- -- ----- Quality? 0 2 2 10 Speed? 2 1 1 7 Is there a way to do this in set-based SQL? I know how to do it using loops in C# or cursors in SQL, but I'm trying to make it work in a reporting tool that doesn't support cursors.

  Hi all, i am wondering how can i select specific number of child objects instead of taking them all with include? lets say i have object 'Group' and i need to select last ten students that joined the group. When i use '.Include("Students"), EF includes all students. I was trying to use Take(10), but i am pretty new to EF and programming as well, so i couldn't figure it out. Any suggestions? UPDATED: ok, i have Group object already retrieved from db like this: Group group = db.Groups.FirstOrDefault(x=>x.GroupId == id) I know that i can add Include("Students") statement, but that would bring ALL students, and their number could be quite big whether i need only freshest 10 students. Can i do something like this: var groupWithStudents = group.Students.OrderByDescending(//...).Take(10);? The problem with this is that Take< no longer appears in intellisense. Is this clear enough?   Hi - we are looking at developing a web application that allows users (some subscribed (authenticated) and some not (browsing)). We would like some basic document management, a wiki, a blog etc. and do not expect the app to be heavily used (DB size not an issue at this stage). I require the GUI to be customised to our corporate style and we access to .net development skills which we would like to leverage to develop the application. With this in mind I have the follwoing 3 questions: Is WSS 3.0 / SPF 2010 the correct framework to be building this app on? What are the licensing terms or are these frameworks similar to the .Net framework that once installed on our host server we can use the base services provided to develop our apps on? • HTTP server that handles requests through IO devices?

  This question can probably only be answered for Unix-like systems that follow the "everything is a file" idiom. Would it be hard to create a web server that mounts local devices for handling http traffic? It would enable a program to read raw http requests from /dev/httpin (for example) and write the responses to /dev/httpout. I think this would be nice because it would allow me to create a web server from any programming language that is capable of handling IO streams. I don't really know where to start on this. Any suggestions on how to setup such a system?

  Often when I see regular expressions, I only see a total mess of characters. Why does it have to be this way? I guess what I really want to know is: are there alternatives to regular expressions that basically do the same thing but are implemented in a human readable language? [UPDATE] Thanks for all the great responses and inspiration! I wanted to highlight this particular link which shows how a (working) alternative would look like, which may also be a good starting point for learning or "simple" regex expressions. But you also quickly get a feel for the verbosity tradeoff.

• Compiler error when using abstract types

  I'm trying to implement a "protocol helper" trait that is responsible for matching up Prompts and Responses. The eventual goal is to have an object that defines the various Prompt and Response classes as subclasses of a sealed trait, then have a class that mixes in the ProtocolSupport trait for that Protocol object. The problem is that my current approach won't compile, even though I'm fairly sure it should.   I need a simple client-server communication in order to implement unit-test. My steps: Create server thread Wait for server thread to put server socket into listen mode ( serverSocket.accept() ) Create client Make some request, verify responses Basically, I have a problem with step #2. I can't find a way to signal me when server socket is put to "listen" state. An asynchronous call to "accept" will do in this case, but java doesn't support this (it seems to support only asynchronous channels and those are incompatible with "accept()" method according to documentation). Of cause I can put a simple "sleep", but that is not really a solution for production code. So, to summarize, I need to detect when ServerSocket has been put into listen mode without using sleeps and/or polling.

I program for a living, and it goes hand in hand with my personality type which is likely true for most of us, as such I live and work in the world of logic and logical decisions. A problem I have is in dealing with people that live and work in a world of emotional responses and reactions that typically make no sense, or have any real bearing on any given situation. What is the trick to dealing with these people? It is nothing but an act of futility, leading to utter exasperation dealing with people like this when attempting to get them to understand some pretty basic concepts. How do you do it?

• Number guessing game (3+- guessed result)

  I've been assigned a task to create a game that generates 4 digits and the user has to guess the digits one at a time to get the correct result. If the number is correct a Y is displayed and if not, a N. This was easy, now the next step was to implement another two responses. If the answer is too high, a H is displayed and too low, an N. Again, was easy - now the third is to use the same design as game 2 but if the number is 3 higher than a H is displayed and same if it's 3 lower than a L is displayed - otherwise an X is displayed. I can't figure out how to do this. Here's my test code for game 2 for just one of the digits - any help is appreciated. • Programmatically get valid switch/case values

  When MATLAB scans through cases in a switch/case block, does it remember the values that it skips, and is it possible to access that list? I have a few functions with long switch\case block and I would like to have them return a list of valid case values if they make it down to otherwise. For instance, I have a function that returns a set of optical constants for a material. It currently has about 20 different materials and it is growing as I consider new ones. I realize I can brute-force it and just re-type all of the valid cases into a cell array under otherwise and have the function throw an error and return the list of valid responses, but maintaining both lists without errors or laziness creeping in over time is challenging.

  Is there a good way in Django to convert an entire model to a dictionary? I mean, like this: class DictModel(models.Model): key = models.CharField(20) value = models.CharField(200) DictModel.objects.all().to_dict() ... with the result being a dictionary with the key/value pairs made up of records in the Model? • Javascript, jQuery - how signed actions to just created object?

  I am trying to make simple list with ability to add and delete elements. For now I am working on adding and performing a simple action on each of list elements object (existing and added). Unfortunately I have met some difficulties with that. I am able to modify objects that are created at the beginning, but not one added during "webpage working". First of all my idea was to add AJAX to this, but I don't think it is the easiest way. I think that some time ago (I don't remember where) I read how to make this work, but now I don't know. I would be really glad if someone would help me with this or at least give a link to good explanation of this.   In JavaScript, I want to create an object instance (via the new operator), but pass an arbitrary number of arguments to the constructor. Is this possible?
