• Copy of Access mdb database being updated by live database

  I'm trying to compute statistics for data held in an Access .mdb database. In order to avoid interfering with the live database, I'm working from a copy which I made by simply using copy-paste in Windows Explorer. The copy resides in the same directory, but with a different name. I'm using R and RODBC to connect to the copy of the file. The strange thing is that new data that is being updated on the original live database is appearing in my queries. This is despite the file timestamps of the copy not changing at all. It is also causing some slowdown in the live database. My understanding is that the .mdb files are standalone, or is this not the case? Should I have copied the database in a different way?

This works perfectly fine as long the class myViewController is displayed as a standalone view. If I'm putting the View inside a UINavigationController the UIImageView won't display the image after taking one with the camera. But if I choose a picture from the library everything is fine again. So why does the UIImageView won't display a image taken with the camera inside a UINavigationController?

  After using relational databases as back-end storage all my Windows programming life (currently .NET), I want to experiment with a document-oriented database by this Wikipedia definition; it can be standalone or layered over an existing non-commercial database system. What open source document-oriented database solution would you recommend from your own experience and why? A nice to have would be a .NET provider. Admittedly this is somewhat subjective and potentially argumentative so keep it real folks and I'll do the same - also your answers will be invaluable to others looking into document-oriented databases for the first time on Windows. • Help with understanding why UAC dialog pops up on Win7 for our application

  We have a C++ unmanaged application that appears to cause a UAC prompt. It seems to happen on Win7 and NOT on Vista Unfortunately the UAC dlg is system modal so I can't attach a debugger to check in the code where it is, and running under msdev (we're using 2008) runs in elevated mode. We put a message box at the start of our program/winmain but it doesn't even get that far, so apparently this is in the startup code. What can cause a UAC notification so early and what other things can I do to track down the cause? EDIT Apparently the manifest is an important issue here, but it seems not to be helping me - or perhaps I am not configuring the manifest file correctly. Can someone provide a sample manifest? Also, does the linker/UAC magic figure out that the program "might" write to the registry and set its UAC requirements based on that? There are code paths that might trigger UAC, but we are not even at that point when the UAC dlg comes up. An additional oddity is that this does not seem to happen on Vista with UAC turned on. • cropped layout on the Android avd emulator

  My application layout looks good on two slightly different avds I created in the development environment using Eclipse. However when I try to run these devices in the Emulator as standalone I see some missing buttons and cropped edges on the screen. I used the apk generated by Eclipse and installed it in the devices using adb - install. I want to know what the problem is. Also, any general guidelines to write an app that can run on any Android device for a given version. Thanks in advance.

Or it's integrated in browser only and can't be simple accessible? I know, Adobe AIR apps are supported as standalone .apk. So it must be some API/SDK (from Google) to connect with Flash player. Is there any details, how to program it (more clear: launch swf from my app and interact with it)? Thank you!

  I'm writing a PHP script to generate SQL dumps from my database for version control purposes. It already dumps the data structure by means of running the appropriate SHOW CREATE .... query. Now I want to dump data itself but I'm unsure about the best method. My requirements are: I need a record per row Rows must be sorted by primary key SQL must be valid and exact no matter the data type (integers, strings, binary data...) Dumps should be identical when data has not changed I can detect and run mysqldump as external command but that adds an extra system requirement and I need to parse the output in order to remove headers and footers with dump information I don't need (such as server version or dump date). I'd love to keep my script as simple as I can so it can be hold in an standalone file. What are my alternatives?

  I often have to write data parsing scripts, and I'd like to be able to run them in two different ways: as a module and as a standalone script. So, for example: def parseData(filename): # data parsing code here return data def HypotheticalCommandLineOnlyHappyMagicFunction(): print json.dumps(parseData(sys.argv[1]), indent=4) the idea here being that in another python script I can call import dataparser and have access to dataParser.parseData in my script, or on the command line I can just run python dataparser.py and it would run my HypotheticalCommandLineOnlyHappyMagicFunction and shunt the data as json to stdout. Is there a way to do this in python?

I'm thinking in terms of WebSphere Application Server 6.1, but if someone knows how to do this for another application server, it may get me in the right direction. • How do you keep Cocoa controllers from getting too big?

  Hello! Do you have some tricks or techniques to break Cocoa controller classes into smaller chunks? I find that whatever I do the controllers end up being one of the more complicated classes in my design. The basic stuff is simple, but once I have several pop-overs or action sheets running, things get uncomfortably complex. It's not that bad, but still I would like to refactor the code into several standalone chunks. I thought about categories, but the code is not that independent (a lot of times it needs to tap into viewWillAppear, for example) and I find that I spend a long time fighting the compiler. I also thought about adding functionality in layers using inheritance, but that feels like a hack.

  I need various UML diagrams (sequence/collaboration, class, package, and system component) from some C++ files. However, these files are plugins in a larger programming framework. I have tried generating UML from Rational Rose 7 (2002 version), but I am not very experienced and I am unsure if RR simply cannot produce the diagram, I am doing something wrong, or the diagrams are not rendering correctly because the source files are plugins instead of standalone programs. I have also tried Star Modeler with little success and there seem to be no tutorials on how to generate these models. Is there a simple, bulletproof way to get UML diagrams for C++ files?

  I know what the projects are about: Safari is Apples browser. WebKit is the engine used in Safari (and in many other browsers) which is open source. The WebKit source code contains also code to compile it as a standalone application. You can download the nightly build of WebKit here: http://nightly.webkit.org/ I have compared some of those nightly builds of WebKit to the official Safari application. And besides the slightly different logo and the different name, I haven't really seen any difference. Are there any? Or is it just the branding? Edit: I just tried again with the current nightly build of today and it even names itself "Safari" now.

  Hi, I'm trying to evaluate an xpath varable I'm building dynamically based on the position of the node. I can create the xpath string in a variable but when I select the value of this just get the string and not the node set I need. I use the following to create the xpath <xsl:variable name="xpathstring" select="normalize-space(concat(&quot;//anAttribute[@key='pos&quot;,position(),&quot;']&quot;))"/> and try to output the value with the following. <xsl:value-of select="$xpathstring"/> If I execute the xpath in my debugger I get the nodeset but in my xml output only get the xpath string which looks like this //anAttribute[@key='pos1'] I had a look at exslt dyn:evaluate which seems to enable this but this seems to be only supported by certain processors and doesn't provide a standalone implementation or at least as far as I could see (currently using the standard .net 2.0 xslt whihc is only xslt 1.0 as far as I recall) Is there anyway to handle this without changing processor?   I have service in which i am accessing few configuration properties from grailsApplication I am injecting it like this class MyWebService{ def grailsApplication WebService webService = new WebService() def getProxy(url, flag){ return webService.getClient(url) } def getResponse(){ def proxy = getProxy(grailsApplication.config.grails.wsdlURL, true) def response = proxy.getItem(ItemType) return response } } When i call getProxy() method, i see this in tomcat logs No signature of method: org.example.MyWebService.getProxy() is applicable for argument types: (groovy.util.ConfigObject, java.lang.Boolean) values: [[:], true] Possible solutions: getProxy(), getProxy(java.lang.String, boolean), setProxy(java.lang.Object) which means grailsApplication is not getting injected into the service, is there any alternate way to access configuration object ? according to burtbeckwith's post configurationholder has been deprecated, can't think of anything else. Interestingly the very same service works fine in my local IDE(GGTS 3.1.0), that means locally grailsApplication is getting injected, but when i create a war to deploy to a standalone tomcat, it stops getting injected.

• C/C++ detect network type

  I need to write a win32 c/c++ application which will be able to determine whether the PC it's running on is connected to one of 2 networks. The first network is the company LAN (which has no internet connection) and the second network is a standalone switch with a single PC connected to it (the PC that the program is running on). I'm pretty new to network programming but so far I have tried testing to see if a network drive which is held on our LAN can be mapped. This works fine if the PC is connected to the LAN, the drive mapping succeeds so so LAN detection is successful. However, if the PC is connected to the switch, this results in a VERY long timeout which is not a suitable as it will delay the program so much as to make it unusable. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? I'm using c/c++ in VS 6.0

  Hey everyone, I programmed an hour-sheet application and now I would like to publish it so people can install and run it. I've tried the publish function of visual studio 2008 but this gives me a clickOnce application/installer that's really confusing, but it works when I run it, but when I export the installer to another pc it installs it crashes at the end of the install. so I tried just coping the installed files but then the program crashes at startup. Is there a simple way to compile the application to a simple standalone executable or maybe containing a separate folder containing the resources (images/classes)?

  Hi, Is it possible to paqckage multiple rpms into one file. I have got two bundles one of which requires that the other be installed. I would like to create a single installable out of them in such a way that this installer will first invoke pkg 1 and then install pkg 2. Is this possible? What about deb packages? Sorry if it a basic question. I have not worked with installers on Linux before. I have created Windows installers. There you can create two merge modules (.msm) and package them into a standalone installer (.msi) and specify the order of execution. I am looking for similar functionality on Linux.

• Embedded Java Databases for Large Data Sets

  I would like to port a PHP/MySQL-based client/server application to be a standalone desktop application written in Java. The database has grown to be fairly large, with several tables with hundreds of thousands of rows. I expect these could grow to over a million entries for certain tables. What embedded database would best handle this? HSQLDB and Sqlite seem to be the obvious choices, though I'm guessing there are others out there as well. My main priorities are the ability to perform queries on large amounts of data efficiently (this thread seems to confirm Sqlite can handle this) and the ease with which I can import old data from MySQL (I remember HSQLDB being kind of a pain for that). Note: I am aware that similar questions comparing embedded databases have been posted before (for example here and here) but as my priorities differ somewhat from most applications considering the large data migration I thought it justified a new question.

  Hi, I have had my new rails program up for a few days now. I'm running it on Ubuntu 10.4 with apache2 in another location than the website it's made for (it's a standalone database application for physiotherapists). The people I made it for now want me to deploy it to the public part of their website, only with one change. Those who open it via the link in the public-part should not be able to click one button! I was thinking of doing something like this in my view: <% if session[:inside]%> <%=button_to 'Sækja mælitæki', @link_to_mt%> <%end%> How could I set session[:inside] only to true if the program was started from within the private part of the webpage? I thought of creating two new actions, the other would set session[:inside] to true and the other to false, but that seems to me like a security risk, is it not? BR, Sindri
