• Free Hosting control panel

  Hello All, I'm in the mid of researching for one of the best hosting control panels. The server I run is Ubuntu and I have some experience with ISPConfig 2 & 3. Since I haven't explored any others available, what are the recommended ones for an Ubuntu server? I asked because I find that there seems to be some disabling and modifications required for an Ubuntu server if I need to use ispconfig which causes the server to change its actual way of running. It's quite good though, but any more recommended ones ? Something more organic? which doesn't require much breaking and changing. I'm not asking for the simple one, I don't mind going extra mile to install a powerful one but just try sticking with most Ubuntu's conventions will be an ideal one for me. And of course, if there happens to be something that meets the requirement as mentioned "Ubuntu conventions" and also simple to install at the same time, that'd be a bonus. Thanks in advance.

• Visual Studio 11 not 2011

  A little pet peeve of mine is when people incorrectly refer to the Developer Preview (or the upcoming Beta) as Visual Studio 2011 instead of the correct Visual Studio 11. The "11" refers to the version number (internally we call it Dev11). What the product will be called when it is released is anyone's guess (it could keep the name or it could have a year appended to it, or it could be something else, who knows). Even if it does have a year appended to the name, I think it is a safe bet it won't be last year! For reference, version 10 was the previous version of Visual Studio which happened to be released in 2010, hence it got the name Visual Studio 2010. That is what confuses new people to this product I guess... they think that the two-digit number matches the year, just because it coincided like that last year. (btw, internally we called it Dev10). For further reference, older releases were: Visual Studio 2008 (v9) aka "Orcas", Visual Studio 2005 (v8) aka "Whidbey", Visual Studio .NET 2003 (v7.1) aka "Everett", and Visual Studio .NET 2002 (v7) aka "Rainier". Before that, we were in the pre-.NET era with Visual Studio 6 (where the version and the product name matched, without the year appended to the name). So next time you hear someone saying "Visual Studio 2011", point them to this post for some mini-education... thanks. Comments about this post by Daniel Moth welcome at the original blog.

• Getting Started with Puppet on Oracle Solaris 11

  One of the exciting enhancements with Oracle Solaris 11.2 has been the introduction of Puppet. While upstream Puppet did have some rudimentary support for Oracle Solaris 11, Drew Fisher and Ginnie Wray worked tirelessly to add enhance the Oracle Solaris Puppet offering. We've talked to customers over the past few years and asked them what their problems were and what technologies they were using, particularly for configuration management. Puppet came up time and time again, and it made a huge amount of sense bringing it as a 1st class citizen in the Oracle Solaris platform. So what is Puppet, and why is it useful? • Deploying Fusion Order Demo on 11.1.1.6 by Antony Reynolds

  Do you need to build a demo for a customer? Why not to use Fusion Order Demo (FOD) and modify it to do some extra things. Great idea, let me install it on one of my Linux servers I said "Turns out there are a few gotchas, so here is how I installed it on a Linux server with JDeveloper on my Windows desktop." Task 1: Install Oracle JDeveloper Studio I already had JDeveloper 11.1.1.6 with SOA extensions installed so this was easy. Task 2: Install the Fusion Order Demo Application First thing to do is to obtain the latest version of the demo from OTN, I obtained the R1 PS5 release. Gotcha #1 – my winzip wouldn’t unzip the file, I had to use 7-Zip. Task 3: Install Oracle SOA Suite On the domain modify the setDomainEnv script by adding “-Djps.app.credential.overwrite.allowed=true” to JAVA_PROPERTIES and restarting the Admin Server. Also set the JAVA_HOME variable and add Ant to the path. I created a domain with separate SOA and BAM servers and also set up the Node Manager to make it easier to stop and start components. • EPM Planning 11.1.2 - MassGridStatistics

  A utility is available for Oracle Hyperion Planning that determines web form load times.  This utility, MassGridStatistics, opens all web forms within the Planning application.  After the forms are opened, an html page will appear showing the form options, suppression, number of row column and page members, and load times.  Any form having a load time longer than one second could potentially have scalability issues in a multi-user environment and should be considered for re-design.  Adding suppression (especially block suppression) and reducing the number of rows and columns are potential fixes that will reduce load times. The MassGridStatistics utility is located in a .7z file called MassGridStatistics.7z.  Extract the file using 7-Zip.  A readme file is provided listing the installation instructions and the steps to run the utility. MassGridStatistics is included with the 11.1.2.1.101 patch set and will also be in all future releases starting with 11.1.2.2.  For earlier Planning releases, an SR will be necessary to have Support provide the utility.

  I'm new to Ubuntu 11.10 and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I don't now how but in downloading and fooling around with a virtual cd/dvd program I seem to have inadvertently installed it. I had to shut down my computer for a while and when I re booted it all my files and my setup was gone. I have a brand new 11.10 setup with all the programs installed that I originally had but no files or bookmarks etc.. I'm not sure, but I think I'm running in a virtual cd/dvd. I don't know how to determine if I am or not and can't boot up in my original setup. Can anyone help me?

• Weird bug in Visual Studio 11 Beta when running on Windows 8

  With the Windows 8 Consumer Preview version out in the open and the Visual Studio 11 Beta also available, I’ve been putting some more effort into trying them both out. The first impression of the new Visual Studio 11 build was: Why doesn’t it work at all on Windows 8?! The issues I encountered were odd to say the least. Visual Studio did install correctly, which was a good sign, but when I started it, I was greeted with a multitude of popups each telling me that some package could not be loaded. So I clicked away for quite some time to finally be greeted by the new default visual style of Visual Studio. The next thing I wanted to do was start a new project so I pressed “New Project” and got the “Microsoft.VisualStudio.Dialogs.DialogInitializationException” exception. After some pondering and even submitting a bug report I found another already reported bug “http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/727578/vs-do-not-work-with-finnish-number-format-on-w8-64-bit”. It turns out that the dialog initialization failure has something to do with the packages no being loaded and following the presented workaround helped. The trick is to change the negative number sign to “-“ (U+002D) from the additional settings of your regional settings. This issue appears to have a wider reach than just Visual Studio as I heard at TechDays Finland 2012 that the same fix has to be made when using Hyper-V.

  Well ? from comments here and elsewhere, the two most worst things seemed to be the the removal of 32-bit support and removal of support for certain components. Just to set things into perspective: Solaris 10 was released 2005, the newsest class of machines not supported by it were the Ultra1. This one was released 1995. The UltraSPARC-Systems not able to run on Solaris 11 were released 2001. Well ? we have 2011 now ?. Regarding 32-bit support: Well ? I don't think "playing around with Solaris on old gear" is the problem. At first, most people are playing around with virtual machines. But there is something different: 64-bit computing was introduced for x86 in 2003 (yes ? it's really that old). I think this move is more hurting to the people using boards with the first-gen Intel Atom "Silverthorne" as small file servers. And then Solaris 10 won't disappear with Solaris 11

• How to rename Ubuntu One folders? Locked by syncdaemon?

  tl;dr: Does Ubuntu One detect renamed synced folders? I'm trying to rename a large synced folder ('Sync locally' checked) outside of Ubuntu One, but still inside the home folder on Windows. Attempting to do so results in an error message: Cannot rename foldernamehere: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. Quitting ubuntuone-syncdaemon and renaming results in Ubuntu One not finding the synced folder (folder in ubuntuone-control-panel-qt becomes grayed out). Ticking 'Sync locally' again causes Ubuntu One to begin downloading the synced folder with it's old name and ignoring the renamed folder. Is there any way to locally rename a synced folder short of reuploading the entire folder under a new name? Thanks for the help!

My Error log is exploding with "badrequests" with the Error code cR. cR (according to 1.3 documentation) is The "timeout http-request" stroke before the client sent a full HTTP request. This is sometimes caused by too large TCP MSS values on the client side for PPPoE networks which cannot transport full-sized packets, or by clients sending requests by hand and not typing fast enough, or forgetting to enter the empty line at the end of the request. The HTTP status code is likely a 408 here. Correct on the 408, but we're getting literally thousands of these requests every hour. (This log snippet is an clip for about 10 seconds of time...) • Why can't I install Ubuntu 10.04 on a system that already has Ubuntu 8.04?

  Ubuntu 10.04 is beautiful. I love it. I am dying to install it on my PC, alongside the existing Ubuntu 8.04 (from which I write this message right now). But... it won't let me! When I reach the partitioning stage (manual!) Ubuntu 10.04 sees my two HDDs as one RAID volume. It doesn't see all the partitions I already have in place in /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Even Windows 7 doesn't behave like this... (yes, I actually managed to install Windows 7 64-bit in dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu 8.04 on this same system). Note: GParted on Ubuntu 10.04 (live CD) sees the partition intended for Ubuntu 10.04 (/dev/sda4) perfectly, but is unable to format it. Any idea how to solve this problem?

• I am receiving a message saying I have duplicate sources but I can't seem to find a duplicate of the line described, any ideas?

  I receive this meassage when I run sudo apt-get update in the terminal:- Duplicate sources.list entry http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise/partner i386 Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_partner_binary-i386_Packages) So i ran the command gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and checked the source to find there was no duplicate, not that I can see anyway.
