• app.config and 64-bit machines

  I have an app that works fine on 32-bit systems, but fails on XP 64 bit systems. I've tracked it down to the connection string defined in my app.config thus: <connectionStrings> <clear/> <add name="IFDSConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=fdsdata;Initial Catalog=IFDS; Trusted_Connection=true;Connect Timeout=0" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> When I try to reference it in code, I find that the ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings collection only contains the LocalSqlServer connection string from the machine.config file and not my custom string. Another oddity is that it works fine when I run the app out of Visual Studio. It is only when I run out of the release folder that the connection string does not get defined. The application's .exe.config file is there in the release folder along with the .exe file and is up to date.

  I have a Backbone collection whose URL depends on the initialize function. When I create an instance of this Backbone collection, I pass in an ID to filter which instances of the model appear. • Put specific tds from a table row into edit using jQuery (then update w/ ajax)

  I'm somewhat new to jQuery, so I could use some help here. This is my issue: I have a php script outputting a dynamic table. Each row has an "edit" button, plus some other fields. Only 3 of those need to be turned into an input box. The edit button should only put that specific row into "edit mode." I got as far as assigning each row a unique class by adding a number to the end of it. I have been able to use jQuery to change all of the rows into edit mode, but I need it to be specific to a row. An example row would have classes like name0, price0, and desc0. The next row would go on to classes name1, price1, and desc1 (for the fields that need changed). How can I reference these values and pass them to jQuery so it processes an event on just those elements?

  I have read McCarthy's 1960 paper on LISP and found no reference to anything that's similar to user-defined macros or normal order evaluation. I was wondering when marcos first appeared in programming language history (and also in Lisp history): When was the idea of user-defined code transformation (before interpretation or compilation) first described (theoretically)? What was the first programming language implementation to have Lisp-like macros (by "Lisp-like" I mean "using a readable Turing-complete language to do code-transformation")? (including non-Lisps -- Forth for example is quite old, but I'm not sure if the first Forth implementation already had "IMMEDIATE") What was the first Lisp dialect to have macros? Thank you!

  Hi I want to expire a cached action and wondered how to generate the correct reference. #controller caches_action :index, :layout => false #generates this fragment which works fine views/0.0.0.0:3000/article/someid/posts #sweeper ... expire_action article_posts_path(:article_id => post.article) # results in this Expired fragment: views//en/article/someid/posts (0.0ms) So this is almost ok, except the host is missing. What do I do that supplies this to the expire_action method? Thanks in advance.

• How do you manage web navigation info in your application?

  I’m building an application where different users will have different menu items available to them depending on what they’ve paid for. There will also be multiple levels to the menu hierarchy. What’s the best approach to this problem? I’m assuming I need a database table that represents the menu hierarchy, including the parent-child relationships of the nodes in the navigation as well as the sorting of the items. Then another table which I use to manage whether a user is authorized to access a particular item in that table. When I render the view, I’d reference the menus, and the access rights of the user to output the menu, and I’d also need a function to check that same authorization from each controller in case a user manually types in a URL of a controller they’re not supposed to have access to. Is this the right approach? Any suggestions for caching this to prevent the constant look-ups of this type of info? I’m open to any suggestions on how you may have approached this type of requirement.

  We use instantiate and put system critical objects in $GLOBALS for easy access from anywhere (e.g. DB, Cache, User, etc.). We use $GLOBALS so much that it would (yes, really) drop the amount of code quite a bit if I could reference it like $G = &$GLOBALS for a shorthand call. The problem is that, per my experience and several hours of Googling, I have not found any construct in PHP which allows you to 'flag' a var as global, making $GLOBALS first class, and everything else second class. Am I missing something? Is this possible?

  Hi, I am trying to use time() to measure various points of my program. http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/clibrary/ctime/time/ What I don't understand is why the values in the before and after are Different?   Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to?   I've got a script that pulls information from an Excel(Mac Excel'04) spreadsheet, and processes it through a local database. My problem(which is temporary, pending a dedicated scripting machine w/ Excel '08) is when I need to work on another spreadsheet in Excel. I want to ensure that the AppleScript continues reading data from the correct spreadsheet. Is there a way to pass reference to the specific Excel file in AppleScript, as opposed to just telling the Application in general? Or possibly just referencing the spreadsheet without having to have it open ... ?

• How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

  With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies

  Am looking for examples specific to .net/mvc and servers native WinServer08 where problem being addressed is processing a bounced smtp msg so as to bind to an estore transaction and updating account/profile properties. Reading the related questions i find an interesting reference to [VERP]2. Under the heading 'Software that supports VERP i find that IIS is not on the list. Does that mean i need to find a library to integrate into my store's assembly? Release should be called since alloc was called, right? If #1 is right, then I would need to store a reference to each of these in an instance variable in order to release them in the dealloc? Is there any difference between var name = function() {} & function name() {} in Javascript? in javascript (and other scripting languages) what is the 'real' difference between these two syntax: a) function myFun(x) { yadda yadda } b) myFun(x) = function { yadda yadda } to a casual observer - no 'real' difference - you still call either as myFun()...and they still return the same thing, so if reference and return are identical - is it a preference or is there some difference in the code parsing engine that treats these two differently - and if so - when would you use one over the other???

  I have two entities(actually more but it doenst matter) Exam and Exam_Normals Its a oneToMany relationship... The problem is that i need a primary key for Exams_Normals PK (Exam_ID Item) Item should be 1 2 3 4 5 etc.... But cant achieve it getting errors An alternative would be to: I cound use an IDENTITY and a ManyToOne relationship at Exam_Normals but that should be like PK(Exam_Normals_ID) and a reference to Exam and an extra collumn Item to keep an order.. SO 3 collumns But to avoid the alternative tried I tried with @IdClass and got errors Tried @EmbeddedID everything nothing works Any idea??

• Detect double-tap on UISlider?

  I can detect single/double-taps in specific views with: NSSet *myTouches = [event touchesForView:mySpecificView.view]; but I want to detect a double-tap on the button of a slider and can't find any reference to it. Is there a replacement for "touchesForView:" where I can enter the name of my slider? usage: I have three sliders with their default value being directly in the center of the slider. Once the position of the slider has changed, I want a quick way to individually reset each slider to its default position. I currently have each slider's containing view set to respond to a double-tap, updating each slider. It works fine, but doesn't seem natural. ie.I can't double-tap on the slider itself because the slider intercepts the taps and doesn't pass them on to the surrounding view. thanks in advance

  Hi all, I've searched the web and I can't seem to find anything that will work for me. I've seen plenty of discussion, and even some fairly extensible open-source tools, for code editors that provide line numbers and syntax highlighting. Here's my dilemma... I'm working on a "digital code review" project in C#.NET that allows users to specify source files, add them to a particular session, and other users can make comments and line references to the files being reviewed. Basic requirements: Must be written in C#.NET I don't need to be able to edit the text in the text box Users need to be able to select a line (or multiple lines), to make line references. It seems to me that I need some fancy implementation of a ListBox control (not a drop-down list) that has some OwnerDraw capabilities to add line numbers and syntax highlighting. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck putting it together myself, and I can't seem to find a control that's already been written or a reference on how I might be able to accomplish this. Any suggestions??

  I need to test a logical expression held in a string to see if it evaluate to TRUE or FALSE.(the strig is built dynamically) For example the resulting string may contain "'dog'<'cat' OR (14 AND 4<6)". There are no variables in the string, it will logically evaluate. It will only contain simple operators = < < = <= and AND , OR and Open and Close Brackets, string constants and numbers. (converted to correct syntax && || etc.) I currently acheive this by creating a jscipt function and compiling it into a .dll. I then reference the .dll in my VB.NET project. class ExpressionEvaluator { function Evaluate(Expression : String) { return eval(Expression); } } Is there a simpler method using built in .NET functions or Lamdba expressions.

• Can we use union of two sqlite databases with same tables for Core Data?

  Hi All, I have an iPhone Core Data app with a pre-populated sqlite "baseline" database. Can I add a second smaller sqlite database with the same tables as my pre-populated "baseline" database but with additional / complementary data such that Core Data will happily union the data from both databases and, ultimately, present to me as if it was all a single data source? Idea that I had is: 1) the "baseline" database never changes. 2) I can download the smaller "complementary" sqlite database for additional data as and when I need to (I'm assuming downloading sqlite database is allowed, please comment if otherwise). 3) Core Data is then able to union data from 1 & 2. I can then reference this unified data by calling my defined Core Data managed object model. Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance.

My question is, What if I declare a property using the @property keyword and also declare a variable in the interface block with the same name? For example, consider the following code, Interface: @interface myClass : NSObject { NSString *myClass_name; // LINE 1 } @property(nonatomic, retain) NSString *myClass_name; // LINE 2 @end Implementation: @implementation myClass @synthesize myClass_name // LINE 3 @end Declaring myClass_name in LINE 1 will make any problem? Like any reference problem or any unnecessary memory consumption problem?
