• I don't understand Application Domains

  .NET has this concept of Application Domains which from what I understand can be used to load an assembly into memory. I've done some research on Application Domains as well as go to my local book store for some additional knowledge on this subject matter but it seems very scarce. All I know that I can do with Application Domains is to load assemblies in memory and I can unload them when I want. What are the capabilities other that I have mentioned of Application Domains? Do Threads respect Application Domains boundaries? Are there any drawbacks from loading Assemblies in different Application Domains other than the main Application Domains beyond performance of communication? Links to resources that discuss Application Domains would be nice as well. I've already checked out MSDN which doesn't have that much information about them.

• plist vs static array

  Generally, I use static arrays and dictionaries for containing lookup tables in my classes. However, with the number of classes creeping quickly into the hundreds, I'm hesitant to continue using this pattern. Even if these static collections are initialized lazily, I've essentially got a bounded memory leak going on as someone uses my app. Most of these are arrays of strings so I can convert strings into NSInteger constants that can be used with switch statements, etc. I could just recreate the array/dictionary on every call, but many of these functions are used heavily and/or in tight loops. So I'm trying to come up with a pattern that is both performant and not persistent. If I store the information in a plist, does the iphoneOS do anything intelligent about caching those when loaded? Do you have another method that might be related?

  I've a Core Data application. In the producer thread, I pull data from a web service and store it in my object and call save. My consumer object is a table view controller that displays the same. However, the app crashes and I get NSFetchedResultsController Error: expected to find object (entity: FeedEntry; id: 0xf46f40 ; data: ) in section (null) for deletion on the console. When I debug it, everything works fine. So I understood that it's like a race issue. How is these kind of problem solved? What's the best way to design a producer-consumer app with core-data?

• LocalStorage storing multiple div hides

  I am using a simple code to hide multiple divs if the link to hide them is clicked. On one of them I have local storage set-up to remember of the div is hidden or not. The thing is this. How can I write a code to make local storage remember the hidden state of multiple divs WITHOUT having to put localstorage.setItem for each individual div. • How can I save BioPerl sequence nested features in genbank or embl format?

  In BioPerl, a sequence object can have any number of features, and each of these can have subfeatures nested within them. For example, a feature may be a complete coding sequence of a gene, and its subfeatures might be individual exons that are concatenated to form the full coding sequence. However, when I use BioPerl to write a sequence object to a file in genbank or embl format, only the top-level features are written to the file, not the sub-features nested within the top-level features. How can I store my subfeatures in sequence files? Should I just convert all my subfeatures into top-level features, and then reconstruct the tree structure next time I read in the sequence?

I want the same in my .NET MVC application: use something like: <%=MySite.Pages.findById(1).Title%> In the code below, if I use a private variable, or if I use a public class with shared variables (doesn't matter) they are both persisted during the entire application. I want them to load the same way PHP does, once per request. Now where do I store the .NET equivalent of private static $pages, so that the code below works? //what to do with $pages??   I have a HTML file upload field from which I'm reading the file name of the file that the user specifies. The actual contents of the file is never uploaded. At a later stage, is it possible to construct a link using this file name information so that if the user clicks on this link, the original file is launched into a new browser window? If not, what are the reason for disallowing this behaviour? The purpose of such a feature is to store links to documents that are available on a mapped local drive or a network share.

• How to auto-increment reference number persistently when NSManagedObjects created in core-data.

  In my application i am using core-data to store information and saving these data to the server using web-connectivity i have to use MySql. Basically what i want to do is to keep track of number of NSManagedObject already created and Whenever i am adding new NSManagedObject, based on that counting it will assign the class a Int_value which will act as primary_key in MySql. For examaple, there are already 10 NSManagedobjects, and when i will add new one it will assign it "11" as primary_key. these value will have to be increasing because there is no deleting of NSManagedObject. From my approach its about static member in applicationDelegate whose initial value can be any integer but should be incremented by one(like auto-increment) everytime new NSManagedObject is created and also it should be persistent. I am not clear how to do this, please give me suggestions. Thanks in advance.

• Optimising Database Calls

  I have a database that is filled with information for films, which is (in turn) read in to the database from an XML file on a webserver. What happens is the following: Gather/Parse XML and store film info as objects Begin Statement For every film object we found: Check to see if record for film exists in database If no film record, write data for film Commit Statement Currently I just test for the existence of a film using (the very basic): SELECT film_title FROM film WHERE film_id = ? If that returns a row, then the film exists, if not then I need to add it... The only problem is, is that there are many many hundreds of records in the database (lots of films!) and because it has to check for the existence of a film in the database before it can write it, the whole process ends up taking quite a while (about 27 seconds for 210 films) Is there a more efficient method of doing this, or just any suggestions in general?   I am working on a Android app and I have a dilemma. I have a list of Objects. I have to update each of these objects with a database. I have 2 methods: Method 1: I can loop through the Objects. For each object I can connect to the server, update it, and then move on to the next Object, and so forth. Method 2: I can store the Objects in a list, send the whole list to the server, update it on the server side, then return a list of updated objects. My questions are: Which method is faster? Which method is easier on the phone's battery? By the way, Method 1 is easier for me to code :). Thank you.

• Sencha Touch 2: List does not display in Panel

  I am working on an MVC app in Sencha Touch 2 and am having trouble getting a list to display in a nested panel. The structure of the app has a main view which is a tab panel. One of the items in the tab panel is a defined panel, xtype: 'homepanel'. An item in this panel is the list, xtype: 'newslist' that is linked to the appropriate store and model files. The list does not display unless I change its parent 'homepanel' to a type, Ext.navigation.View. What am I missing in the definition of 'homepanel' as a Panel that prevents the display of the list? • How to add labels on Google Maps Pinpoints?

My day to day job is as a .NET web developer so I am looking to use VMWare Fusion to run VS and SQL server etc. As I've not run my dev environment in a VM before, I would like to know how others are setup. • DataNucleus Enhancer flakey?

  I'm creating a GWT app in Google App Engine, and using Google data store. Does anybody else have the problem of the DataNucleus being flakey as all get out? I can save a class, and DataNucleus will do it's thing just fine. If I change ANYTHING in the class (even adding whitespace) and then save, I get the following error: DataNucleus Enhancer completed with success for 0 classes. Timings : input=37 ms, enhance=0 ms, total=37 ms. Consult the log for full details DataNucleus Enhancer completed and no classes were enhanced. Consult the log for full details Once I clean my project, DataNucleus is happy again. Is this common when using eclipse? Is there a workaround?

Still adding support for Unicode in the passwords it's a tricky job because the same text can be encoded in different ways in Unicode and this is not something you may want to prevent people from logging in due to this. Let's say that you'll store the passwords os UTF-8. Now the question is how you should normalize the Unicode data? You had to be sure that you'll be able to compare it. You need to be sure that when the next Unicode standard will be released it will not invalidate your password verification. Note: still there are some places where Unicode passwords are probably never be used, but this question is not about why or when to use Unicode passwords, is about how to implement them the proper way.

  I am writing code that will populate the Margin, Padding and BorderThickness properties of classes in the System.Windows.Documents namespace. Each of these properties accepts a value in the form of a System.Windows.Thickness, which is a struct. However, I wish to associate some additional data with each of these property assignments, which may subsequently be retrieved by my code. If Thickness were a class, I would inherit from it and define properties in the subclass to store my additional data items. But since it is a struct, inheritance is not possible. Is there any practical way to achieve this, while maintaining type-compatibility with the properties I am populating? Thanks for your ideas, Tim

Really really could use some help all I have found so far is a recommendation to use gaeVFS to build an excel file from the xml components and then zip it all together which sounds like a slap in the face. Oh yes and if you were wondering I am questioning my use of Java rather than python but at 5,000 lines of code it would be insane to turn back now... Other things you might find useful Client: GWT Server: Servlets running on google app engine storing data into the google data store Excel file: mandatory, CSV isn't good enough, no need to save the file just to be able to "serve" it to the client i.e. open a "Save As" box.

• Is it possible to temporarily disable Python's string interpolation?

  I have a python logger set up, using python's logging module. I want to store the string I'm using with the logging Formatter object in a configuration file using the ConfigParser module. The format string is stored in a dictionary of settings in a separate file that handles the reading and writing of the config file. The problem I have is that python still tries to format the file and falls over when it reads all the logging-module-specific formatting flags. { "log_level":logging.debug, "log_name":"C:\\Temp\\logfile.log", "format_string": "%(asctime)s %(levelname)s: %(module)s, line %(lineno)d - %(message)s" } My question is simple: how can I disable the formatting functionality here while keeping it elsewhere. My initial reaction was copious use of the backslash to escape the various percent symbols, but that of course permanently breaks the formatting such that it wont work even when I need it to. Also, general pointers on good settings-file practices would be nice. This is the first time I've done anything significant with ConfigParser (or logging for that matter). Thanks in advance, Dominic

  Two questions: How can I import a file from a web address, without a form? Example: Organisation.import(:from = 'http://wufoo.com/report.csv') How can I use xml builder without pulling from the db? More Info My company uses wufoo for web forms. The data from wufoo is exported as csv files. To get the data into my company's cms, it needs to be formatted as xml. I don't need to store any of the data, aside from the url to the csv file. I thought this might work well as a simple rails app.

• Can DBRefs contain additional fields?

  I've encountered several situations when using MongoDB that require the use of DBRefs. However, I'd also like to cache some fields from the referenced document in the DBRef itself. {$ref:'user', $id:'10285102912A', username:'Soviut'} For example, I may want to have the username available even though the user document is referenced. This would provide me all the benefits of a single document approach; Faster querying and eliminating the need to do manual dereferencing in my code. While at the same time allowing me to use references where they make sense. The idea being that when the referenced document is updated (a user changes their name, for example) my business layer can automatically update all the documents that reference it. Ultimately, I'm wondering if it's considered good form to store additional fields on my DBRefs? Will it break anything? Will I lose my data each time a reference is rewritten? Will drivers like pymongo support it?

• Access MP3 audio data independently of ID3 tags?

  Hi, this is a 2 part question. First off, is it possible to access the audio data in an MP3 independently of the ID3 tags, and secondly, is there any way to do so using available libraries? I recently consolidated my music collection from 3 computers and ended up with songs which had changed ID3 tags, but the audio data itself was unmodified. Running a search for duplicate files failed because the file changed with the ID3 tag change, but I think it should be possible to identify duplicate files if I just run a deduplication using the audio data for comparison. I know that it's possible to seek to a particular position past the ID3 header in the file, and directly read the data, but was wondering if there's a library that would expose the audio data so I could just extract the data, run a checksum on it, and store the computed result somewhere, then look for identical checksums. (Also, I'd probably have to use some kind of library when you take into account variable length headers.)

  Hi Frins, I'd like to read an advertisement for the job through my program. Initially i am working on the templates provided by the microsoft word as "Job Description". Basically I have to extract the requirements of jobs like required education, skills or any development tools etc. I'd store these requirements in the database and then further use these in my application.
