• Using memtables in sql. When is it reasonable and is it safe?

  I was just reading an update from a friend's project, mentioning the use of memtables to store data temporatily and then flush to a table on disk. Up to now, I have never faced a situation where I would use a memtable, or a situation where I would think the use of a mem table would be beneficial; so I wonder, when would someone use mem tables? what makes a memtable (appart from access speed) a reasonable choice? and how safe is it, even for temp data? there is always the limitation of available physical memory.

• How can I load static configuration information

  In my code, I use JavaScript for UI and PHP for back end. I also use PHP to store application settings and sometimes my UI code needs to access this information. My configuration file looks something like this (config.php): $resolution_x = 1920; $resolution_y = 1080; etc... When I need to access any of these settings form JavaScript, i simply use <?php echo ... ?> to substitute the value directly, but it just doesn't strike me as very robust. Are they any dangers of doing this that I am not aware of? Is there a better way of doing this? Thank you,

• Materialized Query Table in SQL Server 2005

  In DB2 there is a support for Materialized Query Table (MQT). Basicly you write a query and create a MQT. But the difference from View is that the query is pre-executed and resulting data is stored in MQT and there are some options when to refresh/syncronize the MQT with base tables. I want same functionality in SQL Server. Is there a way to achieve same result? I've tables with millions of rows, and I want to show summary (like total # of members, total expense and etc) in dashboard. So I don't want to count every time user gets to dashboard, instead I want to store them in table and I want that table to be refresh each night. Any kind of hints, answers,suggestions and ideas are welcome. Thanks.

• Using device variable by multiple threads on CUDA

  I am playing around with cuda. At the moment I have a problem. I am testing a large array for particular responses, and when I get the response, I have to copy the data onto another array. For example, my test array of 5 elements looks like this: [ ][ ][v1][ ][ ][v2] Result must look like this: [v1][v2] The problem is how do I calculate the address of the second array to store the result? All elements of the first array are checked in parallel. I am thinking to declare a device variable int addr = 0. Every time I find a response, I will increment the addr. But I am not sure about that because it means that addr may be accessed by multiple threads at the same time. Will that cause problems? Or will the thread wait until another thread finishes using that variable?

• Invoke Haskell function with heterogeneous arguments?

  I'm currently working on a Haskell project which automatically tests some functions based on an XML specification. The XML specification gives the arguments to each function and the expected result that the function will provide (the arguments are of many different types). I know how to extract the function arguments from the XML and parse them using the read function, but I haven't figured out how to invoke the function using the arguments I get out. What I basically want is to read and store the arguments in a heterogeneous list (my current thinking is to use a list of type Data.Dynamic) and then invoke the function, passing this heterogeneous list as its argument list. Is this possible? Modifying the functions under test is not an option.

• Question on Win32 LogonUser API and the Logon Type

  We have developed a ASP.NET web application and has implemented a custom authentication solution using active directory as the credentials store. Our front end application uses a normal login form to capture the user name and password and leverages the Win32 LogonUser method to authenticate the user’s credentials. When we are calling the LogonUser method, we are using the LOGON32_LOGON_NETWORK as the logon type. The issue we have found is that user profile folders are being created under the C:\Users folder of the web server. The folder seems to be created when a new user who has never logged on before is logging in for the first time. As the number of new users logging into the application grows, disk space is shrinking due to the large number of new user folders getting created. Has anyone seen this behavior with the Win32 LogonUser method? Does anyone know how to disable this behavior?

• How to convert a gi-normous integer (in string format) to hex format? (C#)

  Given a potentially huge integer value (in c# string format), I want to be able to generate it's hex equivalent. Normal methods don't apply here as we are talking arbitrarily large numbers, 50 digits or more. The techniques I've seen which use a technique like this: // Store integer 182 int decValue = 182; // Convert integer 182 as a hex in a string variable string hexValue = decValue.ToString("X"); // Convert the hex string back to the number int decAgain = int.Parse(hexValue, System.Globalization.NumberStyles.HexNumber); won't work because the integer to convert is too large. • Make a connection to a HTTPS server from Java and ignore the validity of the security certificate

  I've been testing some that works with a bunch of https servers with different keys, some of which are invalid and all of them are not in the local key store for my JVM. I am really only testing things out, so I don't care about the security at this stage. Is there a good way to make POST calls to the server and tell Java not to worry about the security certificates? My google searches for this have brought up some code examples that make a class to do the validation, that always works, but I cannot get it to connect to any of the servers.

The relationship is from DataEntered to Model (No To Many-relathionship) and no inverse relation. • Creating a proper CMS thoughts

  I'm just about to expand the functionality of our own CMS but was thinking of restructuring the database to make it simpler to add/edit data types and values. Currently, the CMS is quite flat - the CMS requires a field in the database for every type of stored value. The first option that comes to mind is simply a table which keeps the data types (ie: Address 1, Suburb, Email Address etc) and another table which holds values for each of these data types. Just like how Wordpress keeps values in the 'options' table, serialize would be used to store an array of values. The second option is how Drupal works, the CMS creates tables for every data type. Unlike Wordpress, this can be a bit of an overkill but really useful for SQL queries when ordering and grouping by a particular value. What's everyone's thoughts?

  Hi, I am trying to learn Domain Driven Design and recently read that lots of people advocate creating a ViewModels for your views that store all the values you want to display in a given view. My question is how should I do the form validation? should I create separate validation classes for each view, or group them together? I'm also confused on what this would look like in code.   Hi All, Wanting to see the output of the compiler (in assembly) for some C code, I wrote a simple program in C and generated its assembly file using gcc.   I'm looking for a simple and efficient way to store UTF-8 strings in ASCII-7. With efficient I mean the following: all ASCII chars in the input should stay ASCII chars in the output the resulting string should be as short as possible the operation needs to be reversable without any data loss there should be no restriction on the input length the whole UTF-8 range should be allowed My first idea was to use Punycode (IDNA) as it fits the first three requirements, but it fails at the last two. Can anyone recommend an alternative encoding scheme? Even better if there's some code available to look at.

• starting subactivity for the second time causes java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

  Hi there, I am developing a simple app which does a little bit of image-processing. It's divided in two activities; the main one with some display elements and the second one which is used to capture images off the phone's camera. To discribe my problem: I start the app, capture an image (by starting a new Intent with the subactivity) and all data is displayed correctly. If I capture another image after this, I run in an java.lang.OutOfMemoryError - bitmap size exceeds VM budget I dont store the captured bitmap, in the second activity I just extract some data from it and pass it to the main-activity; finishing (finish()) the sub-activity afterwards. I really dont know what I can do about it. • How do I reuse code in Zend Framework

  I am working on a web application which requires the user to login before they see or do anything. No part of this app should be accessible without being logged in. (Except of course, the login controller) Currently I am using sessions to handle the authentication and I have put code in each controller in the init() function to check if their session is valid. This was a temporary workaround, but it is redundant and inefficient. I would like my init() function to be similar to the following, but I am not sure how to achieve it: public function init() { // If user not logged in redirect to login controller $myLibrary = Zend_Library_MyLibrary(); $myLibrary->CheckAuth(); } So my question really has two parts: Where is the best place to store code that will be used in multiple controllers? • Best practices for querying an entire row in a database table? (MySQL / CodeIgniter)

  Sorry for the novice question! I have a table called cities in which I have fields called id, name, xpos, ypos. I'm trying to use the data from each row to set a div's position and name. What I'm wondering is what's the best practice for dynamically querying an unknown amount of rows (I don't know how many cities there might be, I want to pull the information from all of them) and then passing the variables from the model into the view and then setting attributes with it? Right now I've 'hacked' a solution where I run a different function each time which pulls a value using a query ('SELECT id FROM cities;'), then I store that in a global array variable and pass it into view. I do this for each var so I have arrays called: city_idVar, city_nameVar, city_xposVar, city_yposVar then I know that the city_nameVar[0] matches up with city_xposVar[0] etc. Is there a better way?

Now I understand that Paypal offers a lot of features under the roof and I can't implement all of them at once. I want to implement the core functionality of Paypal and other such services. • OpenCV to use in memory buffers or file pointers

  The two functions in openCV cvLoadImage and cvSaveImage accept file path's as arguments. For example, when saving a image it's cvSaveImage("/tmp/output.jpg", dstIpl) and it writes on the disk. Is there any way to feed this a buffer already in memory? So instead of a disk write, the output image will be in memory. I would also like to know this for both cvSaveImage and cvLoadImage (read and write to memory buffers). Thanks! My goal is to store the Encoded (jpeg) version of the file in Memory. Same goes to cvLoadImage, I want to load a jpeg that's in memory in to the IplImage format.
