• My site was recently attacked. What do I do?

  This is a first for me. One of the sites I run was recently attacked. Not at all an intelligent attack - pure brute force - hit every page and every non-page with every extension possible. Posted with garbage data to every form and tried to post to some random urls too. All tod, 16000 requests in one hour. What should I do to prevent/alert this kind of behavior? Is there a way to limit the request/hr for a given ip/client? Is there a place I should be reporting the user to? They appear to be from China and did leave what seems like a valid e-mail.

• What is the best way to solve an Objective-C namespace collision?

  Objective-C has no namespaces; it's much like C, everything is within one global namespace. Common practice is to prefix classes with initials, e.g. if you are working at IBM, you could prefix them with "IBM"; if you work for Microsoft, you could use "MS"; and so on. Sometimes the initials refer to the project, e.g. Adium prefixes classes with "AI" (as there is no company behind it of that you could take the initials). Apple prefixes classes with NS and says this prefix is reserved for Apple only. So far so well. But appending 2 to 4 letters to a class name in front is a very, very limited namespace. E.g. MS or AI could have an entirely different meanings (AI could be Artificial Intelligence for example) and some other developer might decide to use them and create an equally named class. Bang, namespace collision. Okay, if this is a collision between one of your own classes and one of an external framework you are using, you can easily change the naming of your class, no big deal. But what if you use two external frameworks, both frameworks that you don't have the source to and that you can't change? Your application links with both of them and you get name conflicts. How would you go about solving these? What is the best way to work around them in such a way that you can still use both classes? In C you can work around these by not linking directly to the library, instead you load the library at runtime, using dlopen(), then find the symbol you are looking for using dlsym() and assign it to a global symbol (that you can name any way you like) and then access it through this global symbol. E.g. if you have a conflict because some C library has a function named open(), you could define a variable named myOpen and have it point to the open() function of the library, thus when you want to use the system open(), you just use open() and when you want to use the other one, you access it via the myOpen identifier. Is something similar possible in Objective-C and if not, is there any other clever, tricky solution you can use resolve namespace conflicts? Any ideas? Update: Just to clarify this: answers that suggest how to avoid namespace collisions in advance or how to create a better namespace are certainly welcome; however, I will not accept them as the answer since they don't solve my problem. I have two libraries and their class names collide. I can't change them; I don't have the source of either one. The collision is already there and tips on how it could have been avoided in advance won't help anymore. I can forward them to the developers of these frameworks and hope they choose a better namespace in the future, but for the time being I'm searching a solution to work with the frameworks right now within a single application. Any solutions to make this possible?

• "Brute force attempt" on sending multiple emails

  While testing to send multiple emails, I successfully sent about 100 emails (with a 20KB pdf attachment), to the same email-address (my own), and they were all received. But on next attempt, my cPanel account was blocked, due to a "brute force attempt". Are there any special precautions I need to take when sending bulk emails? I simply looped through below code without pause for each email. • Which free IMAP-supporting webmail would you recommend?

  Considering a machine with IIS 7.5/PHP 5.2/asp.net and mysql/MSSQL available, which webmail would you pick? Don't think it's relevant but the mail server is installed on localhost, and is hmailserver. If it's one using asp.net it'd be a bonus, but PHP is ok as well and probably offers more choices. "Client side" look and feel definitely needed, flash/silverlight/ajax not a problem. I have also seen this question, but being asked almost 2years ago and being focused on php webmails, I thought that some better option could've been released in the meantime.

• SSH tunneling and NAT

  I have a virtual machine with an internal IP address and a running mailserver with IMAP/POP3/SMTP. Everything works fine except: When I do an SSH tunnel to the guest server and want to connect to the mailserver with mail.*. then it does not work. There is a connection timeout. But If i connect to the internal IP 192.168..* then it works. So what can I do to enable the access from the domain name to the virtual machine with SSH tunneling?

  So I'm setting up a shared hosting with Apache, PHP, MySQL and the biggest question mark is how to do with PHP, since there is a million options out there how to configure it securely. One solution for that could be to use php-fpm's chroot option, but that causes a lot of other issues like domain name resolver does not work sending mail does not work Tips?

• Is it illegal to download (from torrents) software that you have already legally bought?

  With Snow Leopard now out, I decided to order myself a copy. But as I bought it online, it takes six to eight weeks three to five days for to to arrive via snail mail, but I want it now. Seeing that I have already legally bought a license for Snow Leopard, can I download a retail version of Snow Leopard from a torrent, without breaking the law? I understand that the law varies from country to country, so I acknowledge that this may be a tough question to answer sufficiently. • Adding MX records to DNS

  Let's say I have a computer A which is running postfix, computer B is running tinydns. On domain project.domain.com I'm running httpd server and other server with DNS (tinydns) have entries like =project.domain.com:1.2.3.4:86400 and +project.domain.com:1.2.3.4:86400 where 1.2.3.4 is correct addres for server which runs httpd server. I also have a postfix mail server on 1.2.3.5 which I'd like to work with this domain (project.domain.com). I'm afraid that if I add another alias like +project.domain.com:1.2.3.5:86400 to tinydns configuration - it could break. How that entry should look like? Thank you for any hints.

• How do you set up redundant servers?

  To the sysadmins out there, I'm trying to get an idea about how you go about maintaining redundant servers for small projects. The modest number of servers in my mind is two, and three main essential services come to mind: HTTP, mail and DNS. How do you automate this duplicity? Is rsync the tool of choice (again, for small projects)? In addition to common tools for these tasks, references to books and articles would be greatly appreciated. • Postfix Vacation.pl with local users

  Hi, I am trying to setup the vacation.pl script on a mail servers which has local users only (since they are only 10 users). I have installed the SquirrelMail plugin and the Auto respond option is available for the users, but when an email is sent to the addresses no auto reply email is sent to the sender. There are also no logs on the /var/log/vacation folder which i created as well as the normal log files. Most of the examples online refer to virtual users, can it work with local users? and if so how? regards, Arthur

• Configure spamassassin to mark very similar messages as spam

  Users on my server have been receiving spam, consistently, for some time now. I have most of spamassassin's plugins enabled, and I have made sure to enable verbose logging, where I can see that all of the plugins are working. Why is it, then, that my users are able to receive the same exact junk mail several times in a day without the message being flagged in some way? Here are the relevant headers of an email that I personally have received several copies of: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.3.1 (2010-03-16) on sub.domain.tld X-Spam-Level: *** X-Spam-Status: No, score=3.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_50,FSL_HELO_NON_FQDN_1, HELO_NO_DOMAIN,HTML_MESSAGE,RCVD_IN_BRBL_LASTEXT,RDNS_NONE autolearn=no version=3.3.1 Have I accidentally missed the plugin that can see that I, and others, have received the same message multiple times in a short period of time?

• Isopropyl okay to use on MacBook screen?

  I've always used a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water to clean my computer screens (50% water and 50% * 70% isopropyl). From what I understand, these are exactly the same ingredients used in most commercial screen cleaners, perhaps even more diluted. I recently used this solution to wipe off my 2010 MacBook Pro screen, and there don't seem to be any problems, but this support page explicitly says not to use isopropyl. Now I'm worried that I might have inadvertently damaged something. I'm also concerned because I once managed to dissolve the surface rubber lining of one of my mice with the isopropyl solution, and the MacBook Pro display has a thin rubber bezel keeping the glass in place. Why would Apple single out isopropyl on their support page? Should I be concerned?

• Postfix SMTP sends to localhost, ignores MX records set to Google Apps

  I have the MX records for zaltin.com set to the Google Apps domains (aspmx.l.google.com etc.). If an email is sent to [email protected] from most places, it goes to my Google Apps account. However, on the zaltin.com server (Ubuntu 10.04 if it matters), sending via SMTP (postfix), if I send to [email protected] (via the Pony ruby gem if it matters), it simply routes to kerrick@localhost (showing up via the mail command) instead of going to my Google Apps account (where it should show up in my GApps Gmail inbox). Can I make email sent via SMTP on my server, through my server, not go to my server but to Google Apps?

  Given am Exchange Server 2003 running on a dedicated server on a LAN protected by a Linux in DMZ, Microsoft says that if you upgrade, you should install two different servers (meaning two boxes, two licenses of Windows Server and two installations of Exchange) with different Exchange "server role". Exchange is installed in a safe LAN, there is a Linux relay in DMZ that feeds messages to Exchanges and gets from it the messaged to be delivered on the Net (smart relay). The mail traffic is about 2000 Internet messages/day and probably another 2000 msg/day sent by local users within the organization. The servers hosts 200 users.

• Accessing the Internet via browser

  I am on Windows 7 and using Firefox browser. I am using WiFi, but since the morning I cannot access the Internet via the browsers (Firefox, Chrome, or IE). The laptop shows there is Internet connection, Skype is online, but I can't reach the Internet. Then I launched Tor application which creates secure channel and provides its Firefox browser. Well, I can now access the Internet over that browser. So, what might be the problem causing this malfunction?   I have 10 files which I need to send per e-mail. It is inconvenient for me all 10 files and it will be inconvenient for the receiver to download all 10 files (it can be annoying to do the same operation 10 times). I would like to put all 10 files into one files (I think it can be done as archive). How can I do it? Important details. I am working in the Windows 7 and prefer to do the mentioned operation from the command line. In the directory, where I have my 10 files, I have many other files which I would not like to include into the archive. The files are small, so compression rate and size do not play any role. I just one to have an easy way to put 10 files into one and then easily to extract these 10 files.

I've set my email client to use plain-text but every time I send a post, Blogger hard wraps it instead of letting the text just flow. • Advice for migrating email server

  Hi there, I'm planning to migrate a Zimbra server with about 200gb of data from a server hosted in an office into a datacentre, to increase uptime (we've had a couple of outages when our network here started flaking out, and we have people in other countries relying on this server too). However, I'm not sure how best to migrate the data into the data centre without rendering the connection unusable during office hours, because there's far too much to send in over night over the two meg upstream connection we have here. I'm familiar with using tools like nice to stop a long running process degrading machine performance - is there a simple way to throttle a connection between office hours, so the long running transfer doesn't block the pipe, but then opens up outside of office hours to make the most of the bandwidth? I'm aware the alternative here is to simply mail a hard drive to the data centre, but I'd like to avoid doing that if I could. We're using Centos Linux for our servers, in the office and the datacentre, so extra points for an open source linux answer.

• Dovecot and StartSSL problems with issuer

  I am using dovecot (1) and trying to get my StartSSL certificate running. ssl_key_file points to my private key I tried pointing ssl_cert_file to my public key, with and without using the class1 certificate from http://www.startssl.com/certs/sub.class1.server.ca.pem as ssl_ca_file aswell as combing them with cat publickey sub.class1.server.ca.pem chained My mail client keeps telling me the certificate has no issuer, but doing openssl x509 on my public certificate tells me it is C=IL, O=StartCom Ltd., OU=Secure Digital Certificate Signing, CN=StartCom Class 1 Primary Intermediate Server CA My option for the CSR were: openssl req -new -newkey rsa:4096 -nodes Dovecot's log doesn't mention any problems. EDIT: Doesn't seem to be a problem with dovecot. I am having the same problem with postfix. openssl verify gives me the same error.

  from what i can gather the mailbox bit of the web interface works fine.. when any of the users go to options (top right) and try to use some of the features such as the Organise Mail Delivery Reports to find messages etc... it comes up with a message ..   I set up this computer with a Local account. I have linked it to my 'primary' Microsoft account - which is used in the Mail and Store apps. There are no other accounts linked at this time. I wish to use the Messaging app with a different Microsoft account. However, Add an account only lets me add a Facebook account! I don't want to remove or change my primary Microsoft account, since I do not wish to use the Messaging account with any other services.

• Windows Server 2003 - passwordless access to \\myhost\ but not \\myhost.mydomain.net\

  I have a Windows Server 2003 system on which passwordless access to local UNC paths is possible using the server's unqualified hostname or its IP address, but not via its FQDN -- even when the hosts file is used to map that FQDN directly to 127.0.0.1. That is: \\127.0.0.1\ - passwordless \\myhost\ - passwordless \\myhost.mydomain.com\ - brings up an authentication dialog Unfortunately, I have a local application trying to resolve UNC paths including the host's FQDN. I've tried resolving myhost.mydomain.com to 127.0.0.1 in both hosts and lmhosts, and calling ping myhost.mydomain.com at the command prompt gives the appearance that this resolution has taken effect; even so, attempting to open \\myhost.mydomain.com\ from Windows Explorer brings up a password prompt, while \\127.0.0.1\ does not. The system is using an OpenDirectory server (Apple's Kerberos+LDAP directory service) for authentication.

• Why is the network speed on my Mac Pro (early 2009) so slow?

  I have a really weird networking issue on my Mac Pro (Early 2009). I can’t get higher network speeds than about 2MBit/s. It doesn’t matter if this is over AirPort or one of the Ethernet ports. An iMac and a Mac mini in the same network with almost the same configuration get about 25-30 MBit/s. I’ve read a couple of things about this on the official Apple forums, but there is no helpful information. Anyone else with Mac Pro network speed issues and who knows how to solve them?

• Connect Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e120 to WQHD display (such as Dell U2711) through HDMI

  On paper, the HDMI version of the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e120 is 1.3, which supports WQHD. Does it actually work? I want to connect the e120 to a WQHD display, such as the Dell U2711 or an Apple Cinema Display. I run Windows 7 Ultimate and latest drivers. The e120 I think has the Intel HD Graphics 3000 onboard chipset. I don't have the chance to test out the e120 with neither of these displays, so I'm seeking for an opinion from those who have tried.
