• Problem with network after malware attack

  Im trying to help some friends with a Win XP machine. I got rid of the malware using Malware Bytes, and HiJackThis. But now they(I) have another problem. When the computer boot into Windows it seems fine. When I start Internet Explorer the browser window opens just fine, but nothing happens for at minute or two. After the two minutes of waiting, the network icon appears in the taskbar next to the clock, and then everything works. The computer is connected to the internet using a Ethernet adapter. I have looked at the Rvent Log and found an error from Perfnet with eventid 2004 <Provider Name="PerfNet" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">2004</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> What I have tried so far: In the device manager i have uninstalled the Ethernet adapter and installed it again. I have uninstalled and installed the Windows File and Printer Sharing service. I have verified that both server and workstation services are started. What should I do next?

• How to access remote network resource from local machine

  I just configured VPN access successfully so that I now can connect to my workstation at work from my personal Linux box at home. The problem is that all of my dev files for a server I'm locally running are on my personal box and cannot be transfered to my workstation (at least not in any timely manner over this connection given the amount of data, in addition to the many reconfigurations which would be required for the server to run even if I could somehow get the files across). So essentially, I am able to run my server locally on my personal computer, however, the data-sources required for the back-end are accessible only from within the office's network. But is there some way for me to somehow either access the data-sources directly through a VPN connection or even if I need to be a bit more convoluted by connecting via VPN to my workstation and then somehow connecting to the data-sources through my workstation to my personal computer? And here I could really care less about the speed of the connection from my server to the data-sources since they will probably only be fetched a few times every hour or so. Thanks! Sorry if this a stupid question and/or doesn't make any sense! (And sorry for anyone who read this at stackoverflow, I posted it in the wrong area.)

• Get Internal IP Address From DHCP Hostname

  I would like to try and get an internal ip address of one of the computers on my network. The reason for this is I have a little home server box downstairs but every time I want to SSH into it I have to open my router configuration and go on the DHCP client table and look at the IP address. For example I would like to be able to go ssh ell-sever instead of ssh 192.168.1.105 or whatever it happens to be. My network configuration is like so: Router downstairs that is connected to the Internet and is running a DHCP server My server computer (ell-server) is a headless pc connected to the router via ethernet cable. Running Ubuntu 11.04 Server Edition My laptop upstairs (ell-laptop) that is running Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop Edition connected wirelessly Other (irrelevant) computers - 2 x Windows XP, 1 x Xubuntu - all connected with cables. (It seemed to me the method of connection isn't useful information but I put it in anyway - just in case. If I have missed any information please tell me) Do I have to run a DNS server on one of my computers? If so which one? And does that mean I will have to run a DDNS client on each computer? • Is there a way to run CUDA applications with the CUDA device being a secondary adapter?

  I've been trying to run a CUDA program on a remote computer which has Windows 7 installed. The GPU is GeForce GTX 480. One of the problems I've been facing is that, the computer has two adapters, 1) Standard VGA Adapter 2) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Even though this shows in the device manager. The desktop uses the standard VGA Adapter. I'm assuming this is because the Standard VGA is the primary adapter. Also the device manager shows that the monitor is connected to the standard VGA Adapter. In this scenario if i try to run any CUDA application it fails to recognise a CUDA capable device. Is it necessary for the NVIDIA adapter to be the primary one? Or is there any way to use CUDA when the graphics card is a secondary adapter. I've seen a few posts in the NVIDIA forums on this before, one suggests using another low cost NVIDIA card as the primary adapter, but that is currently not an option. I couldn't find any other solutions. Thanks I tried running the deviceQuery test from the NVIDIA GPU Computing Samples. This was the result i obtained CUDA Device Query (Runtime API) version (CUDART static linking) cudaGetDeviceCount FAILED CUDA Driver and Runtime version may be mismatched FAILED The driver version I'm using is 263.06. The CUDA version is 3.2 I ran the same test on my desktop which also has windows 7 and a GeForce GTX 465. The CUDA toolkit version is 3.2. The driver version was the same and the test passed, although it failed with an older driver.

• I can play "test" sounds, but no other audio works

  I'm running Windows XP, and last night my PC was infected by a frustrating virus (one of those viruses that won't let you open virus checkers, etc). I finally killed it 2 hours later, but it involved some heavy duty anti-dote. One side effect is my audio is now gone. Except it's not entirely gone, because when I open the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the task bar, I can play all the "test" sounds. The speakers, the sound card, etc, are therefore working fine. But things like YouTube or Windows Media Player, there's no sound. I'm guessing there's a setting that needs to be reconfigured somewhere.. but where? Maybe relevant: One thing I did do last night was "play" with the system registry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. SOLVED! The two hour battle with my computer virus resulted in my computer permanently thinking it was in Safe Mode, regardless of how it booted up. I was able to "fix" this by following the post by hsandler in this thread: http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=23032&page=2 I then rebooted.. and let me tell you, the Windows Startup music has never sounded so sweet. Thanks to all, especially James, whose advice gave me a major clue as to what the problem was.

• SATA Driver for Acer Aspire One D257

  i have a Acer Aspire One D257. In this netbook the hard disk is defect so i bought a new one. Now i want to reinstall Windows 7. Im using an external DVD Drive plugged into USB. The Windows 7 DVD is staring, Win7 setup is starting and when it comes to Hard Drive options it says that no drive was detected and i should try search for drivers. It shows me this window: Screenshot from web Now i cant find the right drivers for this netbook to continue with the installation. The laptop has the newest BIOS - 1.15, it is reset to factory default settings except that i enabled the Boot Menu prompt with F12. From the Acer Support Website i've downloaded the SATA AHCI Driver and the Chipset Driver. I unpacked both to a USB flashdrive in seperate folders. When i select the SATA AHCI Driver it does not find any drivers. When i uncheck the checkbox "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer" it shows one driver: Acer HWID (path_to\1.inf). When i continue with this driver i got an error message that says something like: No new devices found. Check if the driver files are on the installation disk. When i show him the Chipset Driver it sees a lot more driver. When i uncheck the checkbox "Hide drivers that are not compatible with hardware on this computer" it show some drivers: Intel N10 Family DMI Bridge Intel N10/ICH7 Family PCI Express Root Port Intel N10/ICH7 SMBUS Controller Intel N10/ICH7 Family USB Universal Host Controller Intel N10/ICH7 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller Intel N10/ICH7 Family Interface LPC Controller When i uncheck this checkbox i get a lot more drivers, and some SATA Drivers but the also do not work. I get the same error message as before. Can someone help me find a driver that should work or am i doing anything else wrong?

• Word 2007 won't run, tries to reinstall, fails with error 1402.

  Okay, this problem has been plaguing this computer for a while now. We tried googling, and none of the answers found helped to solve the problem. So, I am now posting the answer here for posterity. Office 2007 Home/Student edition was installed on the computer, running Vista (32-bit). One day, Word just up and stopped working. All the other programs continued to operate as expected. But every time you would click the icon for Word, it would pop up an install dialog, with a message reading "Preparing to install...". After a few minutes of the little progress bar going and going, it errors out, and gives error 1402, something to the effect of unable to access registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\.wll\.... Searching around, every answer i found had to do with reassigning the permissions on this key, giving full rights to SYSTEM or to Everyone, and propagating the changes down to all sub-keys. When ever this was attempted though, it would tell us that we were unable to access the key due to permissions, even though we had run regedit as Administrator and are logged on with an administrative account. We also tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling it, as well as doing a repair install. Both these attempts also threw the same 1402 error. Also of note was that the executable for Word (winword.exe) was MIA and no longer to be found in the Office install directory.

• Maintaining "Portability" Between Linux and Windows 7

  I am using the following ways in my office's Windows 7 machine to maintain my "portabilibity" when disaster strikes and I need to switch computer while I have no luxury of time for reinstalling all my program to the new PC. a majority of programs I used are portable, mostly from portableapp.com, like notepad+, GIMP, even R, I extract them and store them in a folder in My document, in a structure similar to the default portableapp installation when they are installed to a thumbdrive only a few software that portable version is not available and I will install them as usual all of my working files are stored in a folder in My document I regularly backup them all using syncback, because this program can keep versioning of my backup, and the backup is stored in a portable drive. One day I need to switch my computer and the operation is relative simple for me: I just move the two folders mentioned above into the my document folder of the new PC, install those few "non-portable" program in it, and this is almost done, some minor hiccups can be solved by reinstalling the portableapp into the drive. Overall speaking it is a smooth process. I would like to maintain the same degree of "portability" in my home Linux desktop (Ubuntu or Mint, I'm still deciding), that is, if my Linux crash and I need to reinstall it again. All I need to do is the move the two folder back to the new Linux, and most of my work will be almost ready to be worked on again. But I don't know how to find a Linux-alternative of portableapps. Being a newer to Linux, can anyone tell me whether this is possible in Linux?

  Hey Guys, We have a windows 2003 r2 server and couple of the users are reporting that they can not scan files into the windwos server. They are getting an Out of Space errors. I took a look at the server and we have 600GB free disk space on that partition. But while looking at the event log I found a lot of errors like (13552,13555) The File Replication Service is unable to add this computer to the following replica set: "DOMAIN SYSTEM VOLUME (SYSVOL SHARE)" This could be caused by a number of problems such as: -- an invalid root path, -- a missing directory, -- a missing disk volume, -- a file system on the volume that does not support NTFS 5.0 The information below may help to resolve the problem: Computer DNS name is "server.domain.local" Replica set member name is "server" Replica set root path is "c:\windows\sysvol\domain" Replica staging directory path is "c:\windows\sysvol\staging\domain" Replica working directory path is "c:\windows\ntfrs\jet" Windows error status code is FRS error status code is FrsErrorMismatchedJournalId Other event log messages may also help determine the problem. • Setting up port forwarding for web server

  This could belong on Super User, but I thought this place was more appropiate. I want to run Apache in my computer and want to make it available to the outside world to test a couple things. Apparently, I have to go into my router's (a TP-LINK TD 8910G) settings and forward port 80 to my PC's IP. So far so good. Thing is, since the router uses a web based interface and it's kind of stupid, it told me that since I was using port 80 for this, I should access its settings through port 8080. Maybe it can't detect requests coming from the LAN, I don't know. Point is, now neither port can't access the configuration, and I can't access Internet. Specifically, trying to access anything (including 192.168.1.1, the router's settings) through port 80 turns up a blank page (maybe if I had the server running in my computer I'd get something, but I don't want to risk trying, I had to reset the router and restore the settings), and port 8080 gives a "Can't establish connection" error in Firefox (and similar ones in other browsers). Is there a way to configure the router to not redirect requests coming from inside the network? I'm a beginner with this stuff, so please try to explain in a simple way. If this is more appropiate in Super User, I'm sorry.

• Windows 7 fails to connect to the internet a few minutes after startup

  Problem Earlier today, when I turned on my desktop computer, my internet connection works fine. Cryptocurrency miners connecting and hashing as usual and I can browse websites. But after a few minutes, my miner fails indicating that there is something wrong with my internet connection. Tried refreshing my browser and is stuck at "resolving host", and then presented me an error. After that, i can't browse sites anymore. But the weird thing is that the network icon in Windows 7 shows no signs of problems. Solutions Made Restarted my computer without doing anything: Problem persists. Tried using the network troubleshooter of windows: Reported no problems Stopped bonjour still no progress. Loaded windows using Last good config: still no progress. Restarted Modem: No change. Current Status I currently did a system restore to my system to a point before installing the latest update from Microsoft. Because earlier today, I installed some updates and after that, the problem started to appear. (After system restore, same problem.) Latest Programs installed before the problem MS Visual Studio 2013 (but internet still worked fine after the install). I hope someone could provide answers on this problem. It is my first time encountering this. EDIT: Additional Info OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit AV: Avast Free Antivirus Internet Connection Type: Ethernet It appears that my Laptop can't even connect to the machine thru Remote Desktop My laptop and phone on WiFi works fine and can connect to the internet. EDIT 2: Whenever I boot into Safe Mode, my Internet is fine.

• How to burn a data DVD in Windows XP

  I am trying to burn a data DVD (DVD+R) in Windows XP SP3 on a Dell desktop computer. The computer has a licensed copy of Nero 6.3. Nero indicates that an update to version 6.6 is available, but after following the link provided, it redirects me to the Nero website to purchase the upgrade. I'm not interested in doing this. After creating a project in Nero 6.3, inserting a blank DVD+R and trying to start burning the data DVD, Nero indicates that I should insert an appropriate disk into the drive. It does not seem to detect the blank DVD+R. I downloaded infrarecorder and cdrtfe from Sourceforge. Neither of these programs worked either. They both indicated that I should insert the correct media, with cdrtfe saying there is no disk in the drive. I tried with another blank DVD +R with the same effect. I inserted a CDR containing data into the drive and the Windows read read this CDR without a problem. I have no reason to believe that the drive is faulty. I am aware that Windows XP itself is not able to burn DVDs. However, it seems that three third-party software programs are not able to burn a data DVD in Window XP. The specifications provided in Nero indicate that DVD+R is compatible with the drive. How can I burn a backup data DVD in Windows XP?

• Is the APC BR700G UPS (or similar) compatible with Active PFC power supplies?

  I'm looking at getting a UPS for my home computer. So far the APC BR700G looks very promising, except for one thing: one of the reviews on Newegg says that this UPS does not work with a power supply with Active PFC. Pros: Unit looks great, built well, very heavy, was excited to use it. Cons: Didn't research enough - many newer power supplies like my corsair 750w (and yes dells and other mainstreamers sell them too) that I bought last year have a feature called active pfc (power factor corrected). The signal for this backup battery doesn't fully support that feature and can cause issues. You can find an article on APCs site if you search their user forums for PFC. And the power supply in my computer is, in fact, an Active PFC PSU. I've already found one answer on this site claiming that it's not an issue, that "most quality supplies these days have PFC and work just fine with a UPS." That disagrees with the review on Newegg. Can someone explain this discrepancy? Also, what is it exactly about a UPS that makes it incompatible with an Active PFC PSU? (if anything) Is there some way to tell based on the technical specifications, or do I just have to hunt for reviews online to avoid wasting my money? While any input would be appreciated, I would prefer to get an answer from someone with actual experience with similar UPS's and Active PFC power supplies, who can tell me whether it works or not.

• What is a long-term strategy to deal with CPU fan dust in my home office?

  There are numerous discussions of CPU overheating and how sometimes this can be corrected by removing the dust from the CPU fan. I have read many of these, but I can't find anyone expressing a long-term strategy to deal with this problem. There are some suggestions here, for example, about how often the inside of the computer should be dusted. But I find this generally unsatisfactory. As it stands, in my rather dusty house (heated by a wood stove, with no central air circulation), I need to vacuum out the CPU fan every 3 to 4 months. At high CPU load, this can make a difference between 65C and 100C. I'm tired of hauling out the vacuum every time I anticipate high CPU load. What steps can I take to deal with this systematically in the long-term? Moving my high CPU load computing to the cloud is not a realistic option. Neither is vacuuming my home office more than once a week! (Details: my computer is on the floor in a Cooler Master HAF922 case, and uses an Intel CPU fan on an i7 chip) EDIT: While this would definitely solve the problem (submerging motherboard in mineral oil), it is a bit of an expensive solution.

• Wireless router that supports Bonjour between wire- and wireless- connected machines

  At home I have an ADSL modem that I use also as router. For the record, it is a DavoLink DV-2020 provided by Tele2 in the Netherlands. It turns out that if a computer is connected with a cable to the router and another computer is connected wirelessly, then they cannot see each other's services that are advertised through Bonjour (Apple's service discovery protocol, an implementation of Zeroconf). The combinations wired/wired and wireless/wireless work fine. This means that somehow wire- and wireless- connected machines are on different physical networks although their IPs are in the same range (192.168.1.*). The modem in question doesn't provide many options that I could play with. So, I was thinking of buying a second router to connect to the modem, and then connect all my machines to this second router. The problem is that I am afraid that I will have again the same problem. I am looking for suggestions on routers that offer the functionality I want (Bonjour between wired and wireless connections). I suppose that one solution would be Apple's Airport Extreme Base Station but at 160€ it is ridiculously expensive. Any other options out there? And why is it so difficult to find in the technical characteristics if wired and wireless connections are on the same physical network?

• Cannot connect to windows server by name over vpn connection

  I have a rented dedicated windows server on a public ip that is acting as a SQL Server and VPN server. I need to connect to this server via computer name to get replication in place. I cannot use an ip address due to this issue: So, due to this, we are going the VPN route. That is my primary issue: After I am connected to this server's vpn, I can connect to SQL Server using the ip address but I cannot connect by the computer's name as you can see below... Right now, there is no hardware firewall on it since I had it removed to test this issue. I am running Windows 2008 Enterprise Server as the VPN server. I am not sure if the route print will help any from the workstation trying to connect but here is the info: IPv4 Route Table Active Routes: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 21 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.255 On-link 10.0.0.2 276 Any other info needed? Windows then reminds me again -- either the next day or after reboot, or sometimes another 5 minutes later. Do you want to change the color scheme to improve performance? Windows has detected your computer's performance is slow. This could be because there are not enough resources to run the Windows Aero color scheme. To improve performance, try changing the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic. I believe the dialog appears because I'm forcing Vsync and Triple Buffering for DirectX applications.

  Getting this short: Can current flow from a powered USB hub's power adapter (lying 10 Meter away) back to computer via usb port and cause damage to Computer components like mobo, etc? What should be my concerns? Using a 2 Amp 5V Power adapter to power a 10m Long Active Repeater USB extension cable with 4 port HUB & plugging into PC's Front port, causes PC Chassis fan to keep running (thought slower than regular speed) Front Chassis HDD & power LED to turn on (though bit dim) may be other things which i cant detect/see at chip level, in motherboard?? Even 4 Wifi Adapters run fine (appear to) using this setup, but running chassis fan, dimly lighted Power & HDD LED, even when PC is switched off is bit scary and surely mean 5V & some current is flowing all though that 10 meter extension cable into my USB port & powering stuff. Can this cause damage? and what should be my concerns. Of course I can't switch off the power adapter (lying 10 meters away from PC) every time I switch off my PC to prevent this.

• Free software for backing up an attached network drive

  My wireless router comes with a USB connector which allows me to plug an external hard drive in and it'll act as a Network Attached Storage. The problem is that I want to backup this hard-drive to the external drive of another computer so that if the NAS drive fails, I don't lose everything. However, Windows 7 Backup refuses to include the NAS as a location to backup. I can't fool it by mapping it to a drive letter either. Google presents lots of pages on how to backup files to a NAS, but not the other way around. Can anyone advise me on free software which can do incremental backups of a NAS drive to an external drive attached the computer it is running on? I'm aware of this question but the top answers have one or more of the following issues: They aren't free. The free version cannot backup a NAS. They cannot do incremental backups. They're just a script and therefore have limited other functionality (eg. disk space management, scheduling, compression, etc.etc.)

• Strange battery behavior on laptop

  My laptop is behaving rather strangely lately, and I was hoping to get some idea as to what may be causing such symptoms. The problem: When charging, very minute or so it loses connectivity with the AC adapter for a split second, and regains it back immediately. When this happens the little light that indicates the computer is plugged in does flicker off and back on, but I checked the adapter by replacing the battery on my laptop, and this indeed solves the problem, so it is probably the battery which is at fault, not the adapter (I also tried to move the adapter's wire around just to make sure it had nothing to do with torn wires). I suppose that the obvious solution is to get a new battery, but as far as battery defects go- this is a rather strange one; it loses connection with the adapter, but still powers the computer, and changing the power setting to a balanced plan (was maximum performance) seem to have solved the problem too. Is there a chance this is not simply the battery, but some kind of other electronic defect? And if not, what can cause it to behave so strangely? PS I tried to recalibrate it- didn't help.

• There are currently no logon servers available

  I am running a Windows 7 laptop that is joined to my company's domain. When I installed Windows 7, I created an account for myself, joined to the domain, and it had been working quite well even though I'm physically remote most of the time, and not actually on the network. However, today I created a new local user account (non-admin) for my little brother. While he was using it, he decided he wanted to install a program, because his account is not an admin, he was prompted to enter Administrator credentials to allow the program to make changes to his computer. I entered my credentials, and this is the first time I ran into the error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I tried logging off and loggin back in, rebooting, etc etc, and no matter what, every time I try to authenticate as my "normal" domain account - I get that message. I can no longer access my computer as an administrator. I no longer know how to log in to my machine using any other account aside from my little brother's non-admin account. I don't have any other local accounts created, and the default local admin account was never enabled. I'd appreciate any ideas on how I can recover access to my account. Let me know if I can provide any more information.   I'm reading a PDF copy of Jerome H. Friedman's paper "Data Mining and Statistics: What's the Connection?" using Google Chrome and the Adobe Reader plugin. It contains an amusing quote that I want to copy and paste to my blog. I used the mouse to select the text of the quote and pressed CTRL + C to copy the text. I had to type that text out manually. This is feasible for such a small quote, but how do I actually copy what I see? Is it something unusual about the PDF, the browser, the plugin, or some combiniation of the three?

• Windows 7 Won't Boot

  I recently built a new computer, my fifth one. ASUS Maximus III Formula LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Motherboard EVGA 01G-P3-1452-TR GeForce GTS 450 Superclocked 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Video Card COOLMAX RM-1000B 1000W ATX psu Intel Core i7-875K lynnfield 2.93GHz LGA 1156 95w Quad-Core unlocked processor G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16 (4x4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) memory WD VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300gb 10000 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner model AD-7261S-0B LightScribe Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit It gets hung up on the starting windows screen. When I went to install the OS it did the same thing wouldn't go past the windows logo, so I put the new HDD into my old computer and installed windows 7 thinking it was just an installer error. Put the fully installed HDD back into my new machine and it still gets stuck on the starting windows screen. I've tried most everything I've looked up. Disabled USB, Disabled Turbo Boost, Disabled everything that wasn't essential(just about every configuration I can think of), took it apart and put it back together, took all the ram out save one 4g stick(wouldn't even boot when I did this), did a memory scan which came back successful, I don't know what could be wrong. Only thing I can think of is a compatibility issue somewhere, but I've ran over it again and again and I don't know where there would be an issue like that. Need Backup! .<

• Winamp playing sound but no video

  I am having problems playing video in Winamp (the movie I am trying to play is an AVI - not sure if other formats work). I have installed the K-Lite Codec Pack, and the video does work in Winamp Classic. I can also play the video in Winamp on another machine (although I can't remember the exact configuration details of that machine - and I don't think they're relevant). There are a few symptoms: The content of the Video view is either empty, transparent, or displays rendering from other programs. Opening the Visualization view shows the following error: MILKDROP ERROR DirectX initialization failed (GetDeviceCaps). This means that no valid 3D-accelerated display adapter could be found on your computer. If you know this is not the case, it is possible that your graphics subsystem is unstable; please try rebooting your computer and then try to run the plugin again. Otherwise, please install a 3D-accelerated display adapter. Trying to open streams via the SHOUTCast TV plugin shows Error opening video output, and the video does not open. Opening the file with WMC causes the following error (although the movie still plays): Error creating DX9 allocation presenter CreateDevice failed D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE There are no warnings displayed in Device Manager, although the display adapter is the standard Windows one. Running DxDiag shows no problems (codec for Video listed as XviD 1.1.2 Final). GSpot reports that codecs are installed. System specs: - Windows Server 2008 r2 Standard 64-bit, with latest updates; - .NET 3.5.1 installed; - Winamp v5.6.01 (latest version); - DirectX 11 (Latest version); - K-Lite Codec Pack 7.0.0 (Full); - Machine is HP DC7600 - full specs here. Please comment if there is any more information which will help to diagnose the problem.

• Windows 7 Aero theme's "greyed out" - no found fix

  Brand new machine that was working fine then randomly it changed the theme when I booted into a sort of "basic" theme (white task bar, no see through windows etc) I've done and attempted many fixes and I still don't understand why it doesn't work. I've tried these two solutions: "How to enable Windows 7 Aero Theme" and "Windows 7 Aero Themes Greyed out" These solutions included registy changes, stopping/starting services, and force starting the aero theme. The closest I got seems to be when I went into: Control panel (category view) Find and fix problems (System and Security) Display Aero Desktop Effects I follow through the wizard and let it do its thing and then I get an error window that pops up: Personalization - "This theme can't be applied to the desktop. Try clicking a diffrent theme." That's what I get from the wizard. What can I do? My drivers are all up to date, there are no viruses on the computer, directx is installed and updated, and the registry is all correct. EDIT: When I boot the computer, I get a notification stating that windows failed to communicate with the windows desktop services.
