• msvcrt: memory usage goes wild, but not under debugger

  I have a C++ code compiled with Intel compiler, 32bit, in MS VC6 mode, so using either msvcrt.dll or msvcrtd.dll. The process makes heavy memory allocation and deallocation. I monitor the memory usage with WMI and look at VirtualSize and WorkingSetSize. with debug runtime (msvcrtd.dll): virtual constant 1.7GB, working constant 1.2GB with non-debug runtime (msvcrt.dll): virtual raising 1.7-- 2.1GB, working raising 1.2-1.4GB with non-debug runtime but under debugger (windbg): virtual constant 1.7GB, working constant At 2.1 GB virtual the process is crashing (as expected). But why would the virtual usage increase only with (non-debug) msvcrt.dll and only if not under debugger? In all cases compilation flags are identical, only runtime libs are different.

Would you recommend creating a system user for the django project and use daemon mode? What type of user and what privileges does it need? Can I set ORACLE_HOME, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH for this user? Would you use a virtualenv for cx_Oracle? Can I somehow put the python2.6 inside the virtualenv so it will portable to other servers? Thanks

• WxPython Incompatible With Snow Leopard?

  Hello all, Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now I can't run programs built with wxPython. • How to monitor and maintain my grails application in live/production environment?

  It is the first time I have ever launched live a website (with Grails web framework under Amazon EC2 platform and Cloud Foundry) and I realized quickly that I am not ready for monitoring and maintening correctly my application in production mode (fortunately the website is accessible to a very limited number of users) . The issues I have faced so far are: Cannot change my views. I need to redeploy my application I have no monitoring. I don't know who is connected, when do they sign in / sign out... Redploying my application (upload WAR + deploy) takes at least 30 minutes. I don't know how to restart my Tomcat server without a redeploy through Cloud Foundry ! ... So, my question is very simple: What tools (including grails plugins) and methods can you recommend me for taking me out from my current blindness?

• Is writing eSQL database independant or not?

  Using EF we can use LINQ to read data which is rather simple (especialy using fluent calls), but we have less control unless we write eSQL on our own. Is writing eSQL database actually data store independant code? So if we decide to change data store, can the same statements still be used? Is writing eSQL strings in your code pose any serious security threats similar to writing TSQL statements in plain strings? So we moved to SPs. Could we still mode eSQL scripts outside of code as well and use some other technique to make them a bit more secure?

• Can't Reorder a UITableViewCell into _some_ empty sections of a UITableView

  If I have a UITableView in edit mode, w/ reordering turned on, it seems I can't move some (but not all) cells into some (but not all) empty sections. For example, if I have this layout : Section 1 apple banana Section 2 doberman Section 3 Section 4 Then I can move 'doberman' into any slot in section 1 (except after 'banana'), but I can't move it into section 3 or 4 at all. On the other hand, I can move 'apple' & 'banana' into section section 2 (except after 'doberman'), and I CAN move it into section 3, but NOT into section 4. What gives? this seems like buggy behavior. How do people work around it? Is apple aware of this bug?

• How to debug a GWT application running on OSGi?

  I'm developing a web UI using GWT. While working only with the widgets I could debug from Eclipse using the Firefox extension, but now that I'm integrating the UI with other OSGi bundles I cannot use this solution. For deploying the GWT application I create the .war and convert it to an OSGi bundle using BND. Then I launch the OSGi container with all the bundles using Pax Runner and Pax Web and the application works correctly, but when something fails in the generated javascript code I don't have any decent output error or debugging facility. Is there any way to launch the GWT application in "debug mode" from OSGi? Any other idea that could help in this scenario?

• Web Service in c# - "This web service is using http://tempuri.org/ as its default namespace."

  I've created a web service using Visual Studio ( 2005 - I know I'm old school ) and it all compiles fine but when it opens I get warned thus: This web service does not conform to WS-I Basic Profile v1.1. And furthermore: This web service is using http://tempuri.org/ as its default namespace. Which would be fine except my service begins thus: [WebService(Namespace = "http://totally-not-default-uri.com/servicename")] Searching the entire solution folder for "tempuri" returns nothing. I can't find it mentioned in any configuration page acessible from Visual Studio. And yet it's right there in the wsdl:definitions list for the xmlns:tns attribute on the web service descriptor page when I view it through the browser and as targetNamespace in the same tag. I'm viewing it using Visual Studio's "debug" mode with the built in server from that. Seems like something has got cached somewhere but I can't work out what and where- I've tried stopping and restarting the server, cleaning and rebuilding the service and going through the associated text config files with a text editor but no dice. Any idea what is going on?

  I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.

• In Android Browser link does not always execute onClick causing focus instead

  I am trying to program a very standard JS behavior for a link using an HREF onClick handler, and I am facing a strange problem caused by what I believe to be focus/touch mode behavior on Android. Sometimes when I click on the link, instead of executing the action, it simply becomes selected/focused, with either just a focus rectangle or even also with a filled focus rectangle (selected as opposed to just focused?). The pseudo-code right now is <a href="#" onClick="toggleDivBelowToShowHide(); return false;">go</a> I have tried doing something like: <a href="#" onTouchStart="toggleDivBelowToShowHide(); return false;">go</a> But I still get the same pesky problem some of the time.

But with the options, the thread count increases gradually (even in the burst mode). The machine where SOAPUI is installed is a WinXP machine. Can I actually do the concurrency testing? If so how?   I am trying to get the OAuth gem to work with Rails 3 and I'm running into this weird problem... (independent of the gem, I think I've run into this once before) I have a controller called "OauthTestController", and a model called "ConsumerToken". The model looks like this. require 'oauth/models/consumers/token' class ConsumerToken < ActiveRecord::Base include Oauth::Models::Consumers::Token end When I go to "/oauth_test/twitter", it loads the Oauth::Models::Consumers::Token module and I'm able to connect to twitter no problem. But the second time I try it (just refresh the /oauth_test/twitter url), it gives me this error: NameError (uninitialized constant Oauth): app/models/consumer_token.rb:4 app/models/twitter_token.rb:2 app/controllers/oauth_test_controller.rb:66:in `load_consumer' Why is that? It has something to do with load paths or being in development mode maybe?

IF the application pool is set to Enable 32 bit applications the code works as expected; however the oracle driver I am using fails as it is only 64 bit.   Hi, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a usb stick in persistent install mode. So I could boot the laptop or my desktop computer with the stick, at boot time. Once I needed the 8GB stick for another purposes so I thought about coyping it to my desktop doing from mac os x: dd if=/dev/disks3s of=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy Now I am trying to do the opposite, after having used the stick, which was formatted to NTFS, just doing dd if=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy of=/dev/disks3s but although I can see that almost of the files are there, I can not boot again. IT is also strange the the file permissions are kind of strange, something like _user What can I do ? Thanks

• Moving the swapfiles to a dedicated partition in Snow Leopard

  I have been able to move Apple's virtual memory swapfiles to a dedicated partition on my hard drive up until now. The technique I have been using is described in a thread on forums.macosxhints.com. However, with the developer preview of Snow Leopard, this method no longer works. Does anyone know how it could be done with the new OS? Update: I have marked dblu's answer as accepted even though it didn't quite work because he gave excellent, detailed instructions and because his suggestion to use plutil ultimately pointed me in the right direction. The complete, working solution is posted here in the question because I don't have enough reputation to edit the accepted answer. Complete solution: 1. Open Terminal and make a backup copy of Apple's default dynamic_pager.plist: $ cd /System/Library/LaunchDaemons $ sudo cp com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist{,_bak} 2. Convert the plist from binary to plain XML: $ sudo plutil -convert xml1 com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist 3. Open the converted plist with your text editor of choice. (I use pico, see dblu's answer for an example using vim): $ sudo pico -w com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist It should look as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs$ <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>EnableTransactions</key> <true/> <key>HopefullyExitsLast</key> <true/> <key>Label</key> <string>com.apple.dynamic_pager</string> <key>OnDemand</key> <false/> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/sbin/dynamic_pager</string> <string>-F</string> <string>/private/var/vm/swapfile</string> </array> </dict> </plist> 4. Save and close dynamic_pager_init (same commands as step 5) 9. Modify permissions and ownership for dynamic_pager_init: $ sudo chmod a+x-w /sbin/dynamic_pager_init $ sudo chown root:wheel /sbin/dynamic_pager_init 10. Verify the permissions on dynamic_pager_init: $ ls -l dynamic_pager_init -r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 6 18 Sep 15:11 dynamic_pager_init 11. Restart your Mac. If you run into trouble, switch to verbose startup mode by holding down Command-v immediately after the startup chime. This will let you see all of the startup messages that appear during startup. If you run into even worse trouble (i.e. you never see the login screen), hold down Command-s instead. This will boot the computer in single-user mode (no graphical UI, just a command prompt) and allow you to restore the backup copy of com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist that you made in step 1. 12. Once the computer boots, fire up Terminal and verify that the swap files have actually been moved: $ cd /Volumes/Swap/.vm $ ls -l You should see something like this: -rw------- 1 someUser staff 67108864 18 Sep 12:02 swapfile0 13. Delete the old swapfiles: $ cd /private/var/vm $ sudo rm swapfile* 14. Profit! Note 1 Simply modifying the arguments to dynamic_pager in the plist does not always work, and when it fails, it does so in a spectacularly silent way. The problem stems from the fact that dynamic_pager is launched very early in the startup process. If your swap partition has not yet been mounted when dynamic_pager is first loaded (in my experience, this happens 99% of the time), then the system will fake its way through. It will create a symbolic link in your /Volumes directory which has the same name as your swap partition, but points back to the default swapfile location (/private/var/vm). Then, when your actual swap partition mounts, it will be given the name Swap 1 (or YourDriveName 1). You can see the problem by opening up Terminal and listing the contents of your /Volumes directory: $ cd /Volumes $ ls -l You will see something like this: drwxrwxrwx 11 yourUser staff 442 16 Sep 12:13 Swap -> private/var/vm drwxrwxrwx 14 yourUser staff 5 16 Sep 12:13 Swap 1 lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 1 17 Sep 12:01 System -> / Note that this failure can be very hard to spot. If you were to check for the swapfiles as I show in step 12, you would still see them! The symbolic link would make it seem as though your swapfiles had been moved, even though they were actually being stored in the default location. Note 2 I was originally unable to get this to work in Snow Leopard because com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist was stored in binary format. I made a copy of the original file and opened it with Apple's Property List Editor (available with Xcode) in order to make changes, but this process added some extended attributes to the plist file which caused the system to ignore it and just use the defaults. As dblu pointed out, using plutil to convert the file to plain XML works like a charm. Note 3 You can check the Console application to see any messages that dynamic_pager_init echos to the screen. If you see the following lines repeated over and over again, there is a problem with the setup. I ran into these messages because I forgot to create the '.vm' directory that I specified in dynamic_pager_init. com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.dynamic_pager[176]) Exited with exit code: 1 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.dynamic_pager) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds When everything is working properly, you may see the above message a couple of times, but you should also see the following message, and then no more of the "Throttling respawn" messages afterwards. com.apple.dynamic_pager[???] Launching dynamic pager on volume Swap This means that the script did have to wait for the partition to load, but in the end it was successful.

• Getting "Object is read only" error when setting ClientCredentials in WCF

  I have a proxy object generated by Visual Studio (client side) named ServerClient. I am attempting to set ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName/Password before opening up a new connection using this code: InstanceContext context = new InstanceContext(this); m_client = new ServerClient(context); m_client.ClientCredentials.UserName.UserName = "Sample"; As soon as the code hits the UserName line it fails with an "Object is read-only" error. I know this can happen if the connection is already open or faulted, but at this point I haven't called context.Open() yet. I have configured the Bindings (which uses netTcpBinding) to use Message as it's security mode, and MessageClientCredentialType is set to UserName. Any ideas?

• Fibre channel long distance woes

  I need a fresh pair of eyes. We're using a 15km fibre optic line across which fibrechannel and 10GbE is multiplexed (passive optical CWDM). For FC we have long distance lasers suitable up to 40km (Skylane SFCxx0404F0D). The multiplexer is limited by the SFPs which can do max. 4Gb fibrechannel. The FC switch is a Brocade 5000 series. The respective wavelengths are 1550,1570,1590 and 1610nm for FC and 1530nm for 10GbE. The problem is the 4GbFC fabrics are almost never clean. Sometimes they are for a while even with a lot of traffic on them. Then they may suddenly start producing errors (RX CRC, RX encoding, RX disparity, ...) even with only marginal traffic on them. I am attaching some error and traffic graphs. Errors are currently in the order of 50-100 errors per 5 minutes when with 1Gb/s traffic. Optics Here is the power output of one port summarized (collected using sfpshow on different switches) SITE-A units=uW (microwatt) SITE-B ********************************************** FAB1 SW1 TX 1234.3 RX 49.1 SW3 1550nm (ko) RX 95.2 TX 1175.6 FAB2 SW2 TX 1422.0 RX 104.6 SW4 1610nm (ok) RX 54.3 TX 1468.4 What I find curious at this point is the asymmetry in the power levels. While SW2 transmits with 1422uW which SW4 receives with 104uW, SW2 only receives the SW4 signal with similar original power only with 54uW. Vice versa for SW1-3. Anyway the SFPs have RX sensitivity down to -18dBm (ca. 20uW) so in any case it should be fine... But nothing is. Some SFPs have been diagnosed as malfunctioning by the manufacturer (the 1550nm ones shown above with "ko"). The 1610nm ones apparently are ok, they have been tested using a traffic generator. The leased line has also been tested more than once. All is within tolerances. I'm awaiting the replacements but for some reason I don't believe it will make things better as the apparently good ones don't produce ZERO errors either. Earlier there was active equipment involved (some kind of 4GFC retimer) before putting the signal on the line. No idea why. That equipment was eliminated because of the problems so we now only have: the long distance laser in the switch, (new) 10m LC-SC monomode cable to the mux (for each fabric), the leased line, the same thing but reversed on the other side of the link. FC switches Here is a port config from the Brocade portcfgshow (it's like that on both sides, obviously) Area Number: 0 Speed Level: 4G Fill Word(On Active) 0(Idle-Idle) Fill Word(Current) 0(Idle-Idle) AL_PA Offset 13: OFF Trunk Port ON Long Distance LS VC Link Init OFF Desired Distance 32 Km Reserved Buffers 70 Locked L_Port OFF Locked G_Port OFF Disabled E_Port OFF Locked E_Port OFF ISL R_RDY Mode OFF RSCN Suppressed OFF Persistent Disable OFF LOS TOV enable OFF NPIV capability ON QOS E_Port OFF Port Auto Disable: OFF Rate Limit OFF EX Port OFF Mirror Port OFF Credit Recovery ON F_Port Buffers OFF Fault Delay: 0(R_A_TOV) NPIV PP Limit: 126 CSCTL mode: OFF Forcing the links to 2GbFC produces no errors, but we bought 4GbFC and we want 4GbFC. I don't know where to look anymore. Any ideas what to try next or how to proceed? If we can't make 4GbFC work reliably I wonder what the people working with 8 or 16 do... I don't assume that "a few errors here and there" are acceptable. Oh and BTW we are in contact with everyone of the manufacturers (FC switch, MUX, SFPs, ...) Except for the SFPs to be changed (some have been changed before) nobody has a clue. Brocade SAN Health says the fabric is ok. MUX, well, it's passive, it's only a prism, nature at it's best. Any shots in the dark? APPENDIX: Answers to your questions @Chopper3: This is the second generation of Brocades exhibiting the problem. Before we had 5000s, now we have 5100s. In the beginning when we still had the active MUX we rented a longdistance laser once to put it into the switch directly in order to make tests for a day, during that day of course it was clean. But as I said, sometimes it's clean just like that. And sometimes it's not. Alternative switches would mean to rebuild the entire SAN with those only to test. Alternative SFPs, well they're hard to come by just like that. @longneck: The line is rented. It's a dark fibre (9um monomode) so there's noone else on it. Sure there are splices. I can't go and look but I have to trust they have been done correctly. As I said the line has been checked and rechecked (using an optical time-domain reflectometer). Obviously you don't have all this equipment yourself because it's way too expensive. @mdpc: What would be the "wrong" type of cable according to you? Up to the switch everything is monomode, yes. The connectors are the correct ones too. Yeah I know there are the green ones where the fibre is cut off at a certain angle etc. But we have the correct ones for all that I know. Progress Report #1 We have had two fabrics (=2x2 switches) with Brocade 5100s with FabricOS 6.4.1 and two fabrics (another 2x4 switches) on FabricOS 7.0.2. On the longdistance ISLs (one in each fabric) it turned out that with FOS 6.4.1 setting it to long distance issues warnings about the VC Init setting and consequently the fill word. But those are only warnings. FOS 7.0.2 requires you to do modifications to VCI and the fillword for long distance links. Setting FOS 6.4.1 to the LS (long-distance static distance) setting with wrong VCI and fillword setting made the whole fabric inoperational (stuck in an SCN loop, use fabriclog -s to see, you don't see it anywhere else, no port error counters or anything increasing). Currently I'm giving the one fabric with the IMHO more correct settings a beating and it seems to do fine, whereas the other one without much traffic still has errors here and there. In short: We have eliminated the active part of the MUX (the FC retimer). We are putting the long distance SFPs into the end equipment themselves. Just to be sure we bought new monomode cables to connect the end equipment to the remaining passive part of the MUX. We are now trying out several long distance configs. It's almost black magic. Everything that happens is mostly empirical, noone seems to have a clue what are the exact reasons to do something. ("We have tried this, and it didn't work, then we tried that and it worked, so we stuck with that." But noone really seems to know why.) I'll keep you updated. Progress Report #2 We got the new lasers for one of the fabrics on warranty. It's ultra clean even on 4GbFC. They're transmitting with roughly 2mW (3dBm) whereas the others are only at 1.5mW (1.5dBm) although that should really be enough. Using sfpshow the SFP producing the actual RX errors shows Status/Ctrl: 0x82 Alarm flags[0,1] = 0x5, 0x40 Warn Flags[0,1] = 0x5, 0x40 Now I'll have to find out what that means. Not sure if it was there before. Well I'll first clear my head with a week of vacation. 8-)

  In JavaScript, why does an octal number string cast as a decimal number? I can cast a hex literal string using Number() or +, why not an octal? For instance: 1000 === +"1000" // -> true 0xFF === +"0xFF" // -> true 0100 === +"0100" // -> false - +"0100" gives 100, not 64 I know I can parse with parseInt("0100" [, 8]), but I'd like to know why casting doesn't work like it does with hex and dec numbers. Also, does anyone know why octal literals are dropped from ECMAScript 5th Edition in strict mode?

  I have two tables "Product" having following structure: ProductID,ProductName, IsSaleTypeA, IsSaleTypeB, IsSaleTypeC 1, AAA, N, N, N 2, BBB, N, Y, N -- active 3, CCC, N, N, N 4, DDD, Y, N, N -- active 5, EEE, N, N, N 6, FFF, N, N, N 7, FFE, N, N, N 8, GGG, N, N, N 9, HHH, Y, N, N -- active The second table "ProductAllowed" having following structure where ProductIDs is a comma separated string filed having mix of active and inactive product ids based on their IsSaleType mode. ProductCode, ProductIDs AMRLSPN, "1,2" AMRLOFD, "1,3" BLGHVF, "2,4,6" BLGHVO, "2,4" BLGHVD, "3,5" BLGSDO, "0" CHOHVF, "1,6" CHOHVP, "1,2,7,8" ... ... Q: Is there a t-sql query that will return a list of active records from the "ProductAllowed" table if any of three IsSaleType fileds is/are switched on for a product. Based on the sample data the ProductAllowed records should return following records. AMRLSPN BLGHVF BLGHVO BLGSDO CHOHVP This needs to be applied in a SQLSERVER 2000 database containing aprox 150000 records. Thanks

• creating a Menu from SQLite values in Java

  I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. In a DBAdapter class I created a function so the user can insert info to a table (This all works fine btw). public long insertContact(String name, String code, String location, String comments, int days, int start, int end, String type) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_CODE, code); initialValues.put(KEY_LOCATION, location); initialValues.put(KEY_COMMENTS, comments); initialValues.put(KEY_DAYS, days); initialValues.put(KEY_START, start); initialValues.put(KEY_END, end); initialValues.put(KEY_TYPE, type); return db.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } It would be the Strings inserted into KEY_NAME that I need to populate that String array with. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? • Emacs enum indentation

  I'm having a problem with Emacs's indentation of Java enums. While it indents the first member OK, it wants to give all of the rest of the static enum members an additional level of indentation. It looks like this: class MyClass { public enum MyEnum { ONE(1), //good TWO(2), // not good! THREE(3), FOUR(4); private final int value; } } When I run C-c C-s on the line that opens the enum, it gives me ((inclass 1) (topmost-intro 1)), which doesn't seem quite right -- it seems like it should be giving brace-list-open. When I run it on the first enum member, it gives me ((defun-block-intro 21)), which is definitely not right. Every subsequent member gives (statement-cont 50). I'm in java-mode and I'm using the java style of indentation. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

• IntelliJ IDEA :: Deploy android application onto Samsung S5300

  I'm trying to deploy the app onto my phone (Samsung S5300) I created project in IDEA and it works well in Android emulator. Now I want to deploy it onto my phone. I did the following: plugged USB enabled development mode and checked all options (USB, location etc) on the phone launched the same configuration but specified the device from the plugged devide (choose a running device) nothing happened, I don't see any errors neither in IDEA, not on the phone. What am I missing and how to fix the problem? The API SDK seems to be correct (2.3)
