• How to copy VirtualBox VDI contents to a partition and dual boot the OS from it?

  I'm a Linux user but I keep a compressed Windows XP ISO with me on a pen drive for the case I absolutely need Windows to do something. This works in VirtualBox most of the time. But now I want to play some games, so I would like to run the Windows image natively. My computer don't have CD drive so cannot just burn the ISO and make an install normally. What I trying to do is moving the installed Windows image to a physical NTFS partition on my HDD and set up GRUB to let me dual boot it. I found many tutorials that deal with making VDI to physical drive. But they assume I want to overwrite my entire drive. Moving the raw disk image with dd to the partition resulted in a corrupt partition. I also tried the VMDK trick to use that empty partition and install the Windows on it. Although the text mode phase of the installation finishes without problems, the VM won't work, either crashes and keeps rebooting or just immediately or freezes (depending on how I created the VMDK, with -rawdisk /dev/sda3 or -rawdisk /dev/sda -partition 3).

Let's say the domain is free to register, but that doesn't mean that the name as it is can be used, how can I check something like this?

• Server 2012 - transparent SMB failover without shared discs, possible?

  here is the scenario - there is a small set (200gb around) of data that I HAVE to keep available. Those are basically shared VHD images that serve as master images for a lot of our VM's - they then run in differential discs off those. The whole set is "mostly read only". In more detail: A file that IS there and IS used will NEVER change. I may delete files (when absolutely not in use) and add new files, but a file that is there once gets read protection set and that it is until it is retired. Obviously, I need as much uptime as possible. SO FAR we run that by having this directory local on every Hyper-V server. Now I think moving this into our storage fabric. Due to the "it HAS to be there" I pretty much want a share nothing architecture. DFS would be perfect for this - a file never changes, so replication would work nicely. Folders could be replicated to a number of servers, all would reference them from there. Now, that hyper-V supports SMB that could be a good idea to isolate these on a number of servers - we try to move into a scenario where the storage is more centralized. Server 2012 supports always on shares, but it seems that this only works with a clustered disc behind. Is there any way around this for read only file stores? All documentation points to stuff like a shared JBOD - but that would leave me open for file system corruption. I really plan to go quite separately here, vertically - 2 servers, both with SSD only for this, both with their own 2000W separate USV, both with enough bandwidth to handle everything thrown at them (note to everyone tinking this is 10G - this would be SLOW and EXPENSIVE compared to a nice Infiniband backbone). The real crux is that this is an edge case obviously - as the files are read only once in use.

  I have a course in which the proffesor has asked us to create a DSL for a our final project. He presented us in the first courses xText with Eclipse. This being a new course, I am still a bit fuzzy on what Domain Specific Languages means. This is my current understanding: a domain specific language is a language that is created for specific problems in software development. Examples of DSL's are PHP, SQL, JavaScript and on the opposite are languages like Java , C# , C++ , Ruby etc. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. What I would like to know: is there is any tool for .NET/Visual Studio that is similar to Xtext, that allows me to define a grammar and be allowed to generate a programming language based on that with an activity diagram?

  First, thank you in advance for any help that you can give a recent transplant from Windows to Ubuntu. I have a question that I have been seeking the answer too but I draw a blank at every turn. I design websites, free of charge, for nonprofit organizations that are just starting and do not have the resources to hire a design firm. I am in need of a flash/swf editor and compiler. I had a program that I used with the awful previous O/S, however WINE would not run the program. Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer. Since I do not earn a dime for doing this, I would prefer if the program was open source, however any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My few friends have landed the jobs this way.   I was recently assigned reading from the Tanenbaum-Torvalds debates in my OS class. In the debates, Tanenbaum makes some predictions: Microkernels are the future x86 will die out and RISC architectures will dominate the market (5 years from then) everyone will be running a free GNU OS I was a one year old when the debates happened, so I lack historical intuition. Why have these predictions not panned out? It seems to me, that from Tanenbaum's perspective, they're pretty reasonable predictions of the future. What happened so that they didn't come to pass?

  I know that Steam for linux is on the way and have been seen a lot of games appearing in the Ubuntu Software Centre of late but my system lacks a decent graphics card and was hoping I could get some recommendations. The desktop is a Packard Bell Imedia S1800 (or Imedia D3526 UK) with the following specs; Memory: 3.8 GiB Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5800 @ 3.20GHz × 2 The system lists the graphics as 'unknown', though I think its just an integrated Intel card From what I can see there is a free PCI-E x16 slot. • What tool do you use to create SVGT icons for your app?

  This is a question mainly for Symbian developers. I would like to create some demo apps to put on my mobile phone and have some kind of nice icon on the application grid. If I've understood correctly, the application grid icon needs to be in SVG Tiny format. The problem is I don't have any toolset to create such a format. There don't seem to be any free tools to edit or convert to SVG Tiny format. The cheapest option around seems to be e-Picture Pro for $169. Inkscape has had some initiative to make it SVGT-compliant, but not much seems to be happening there lately. So the question in short is how do you create your icons for your Symbian apps (or other uses that require SVG Tiny)?

• My cPanel login is being redirected. How can I resolve this?

  I'm trying to get to cPanel to manage my website. When I type www.mydomain.com:2082 into the browser window, the request seems to be redirected. I made a screen-cast so I could slow down the changes in the address bar. First it seems to go to http://www.mydomain.com:2082/login then http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/login.cgi At this point, a screen briefly appears which says 'Login attempt failed' and then the address is redirected to https://this22.thishost.com:2083/, which is no relation to my site at all. This looks to me like there has been an attack on the system and the login.cgi file is compromised. Any suggestions on how to analyze this further? or fix it? Of course my 'free hosting' isn't any help at all.

  Basically, I was thinking about a game based on a TV show, just for fun, and ended up thinking "well, it's not like it can be made anyway". Or can it? In the present situation, developing a game by myself/ourselves on my/our free time, and then using crowdfunding to purchase the rights is not that crazy, if the show is really popular... and the rights not too expensive. That I agree I often use Interface but in some cases I may need multiple inheritance : why not let me choose ? Also today you have to choose between RPC call à la Java and Message passing à la Objective C. Again can't I choose when one or the other is more practical ? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

  I had the following repository for virtualbox in my /etc/apt/sources.list: deb ttp://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick non-free Then I found out there was a new version when I opened it today (the program prompted me with a window to manually download it from Oracle's site). Then I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and got nothing. Here you have a way to add virtualbox-4.0 to your apt-get, but the problem is that it isn't updating, meaning I would have the two installed. I'm also worried if I'll have to do something like that each time it updates since that would defeat the point of apt-get. I've been using virtualbox with the apt-get update for more than a year now and this is the first time it has happened, so I was wondering if there would be a way to just update my current installation.
