• Hosting rails sites; vps or shared, and how much ram? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I have 3 rails sites to launch, all of which are fairly small and consisting of a custom cms, one with an online store, and 2 sinatra sites which are mainly static, portfolio sites. What would be the best way to host these sites (I've deployed on dreamhost shared before and some vps's) Is it best to manage them together under one vps? e.g linode $20/m (for the cheapest option, 512mb and would that even be enough ram?) or keep each rails site separate and host each one on a small vps? e.g $4/m (there's often lots of deals like this on webhostingtalk) I'm currently hosting the sinatra sites for free on heroku but finding it a bit slow sometimes.

  this is my current hard disk status(Running linux Mint LIVE CD) i have- Ubuntu 12.04 on 206 GB partition at dev/sda1. dev/sda2 system reserved. Windows 7 on 90GB partition at dev/sda3 and linux swap in extended partition. what i want to do- I want to install Linux mint KDE on my system for that i want to create a new partition of 30GB(by shrinking the free space available at dev/sda1), i can't create that because i can create only 4 Primary partitions which are already there. so do i have to delete the Swap partition? and if i did how to force Mint KDE and Ubuntu 12.04 to use/share same swap space in new logical partition?

• In setting up dual Boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu, which OS do I install first?

  I'd like to install both Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows XP on a Dell laptop, and I was thinking about using a dual boot structure, and using the bulk of my hard drive as empty hard drive space to share files between the two operating systems (so choice of file system type is very important in this set-up). The kind of partitioning structure I would like to use is Partition 1 - Ubuntu 12.04 (root) (20GB) Partition 2 - Ubuntu /home (20GB) Partition 3 : Free Space (560GB) Partition 4 : Windows XP (35GB) Partition 5 : SWAP (3GB) (Total Hardrive Capacity is ~640GB) My question is; what is the best way to go about setting up this kind this system? Should I install Windows XP first and setup the partitions, and then install Ubuntu which I believe will install the GRUB bootloader for OS booting choice or Do I install Ubuntu first, setting up the available partitions and then perform a WIndows install? Please let me know if there is anything in this setup that I have left out and should know about, including things related to setting particular partitions as logical or primary, and whether the boot partition and the filesystem partition should actually be two separate partitions.

• Problem installing Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 8

  What I have: Sony Vaio laptop (SVE1512E6EW) with preinstalled Windows 8. I disabled Secure Boot some time ago in BIOS. I already had Ubuntu (previous version) installed on it, but removed it some time ago. After that, the default Windows boot menu is showing up everytime I boot up computer, and the only entry is Windows 8. What I did: Burned Ubuntu 13.10 DVD Restarted computer and booted from it Chosen Install Ubuntu (not Try Ubuntu) Created new ext4 partition from free space Installed Ubuntu on it What happened: After the installation I restarted computer. Windows default boot menu showed up (just as before) and the only entry was still Windows 8. If you have any additional questions I will try to answer them as fast as possible.

Recently I've been trying to install utorrent, which I already was able to do so, but I need the port 8080 free to use run tomcat/glassfish and on port 80 php. Briefly, how can I change utorrent port from 8080 to another one? I've been trying to find a solution for this issue for about 3 days now, I saw some solutions, such as create a utserver.config, but I have no clue in how to use it or config it by terminal or on properties, that is something hardly explained by anyone. • How to calculate shot angle and velocity to hit a moving target?

  I am developing a 2D Android game and I am making an aiming algorithm for AI projectiles to hit enemies either following a path, or free moving. At the moment it just calculates where the target will be after a distance and fires a projectile to meet it at that distance. Of course this means varying the projectile speed to meet the target. Does anyone have any tips for a simple-ish algorithm (optimal-ish) to calculate when the projectile needs to fire and where it needs to aim if it can only travel at a constant velocity? Say the projectile goes twice the speed of the target? The only way I can think of involves searching and seems quite large.

  Im not being able to run update manager as I get the error saying that there is not enough free space in the /tmp directory. I've practically cleaned out the tmp directory but the error persists.   I know that 25 lines of lock free code is harder to do than 1000 lines of On_Click()... code but I wonder does anybody know in general what is the productivity of the average programmer in top tech companies. Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

• Access to my files on Android

  I am thinking of subscribing to Dropbox which is slightly more costly than Ubuntu one but I need access to my files on the go, and I prefer to use my smartphone to my netbook most of the time as I like to travel light. I do not want to stream music, I want access to my files only. Whereas there is a free app for Dropbox to access said files, there isn't one for Ubuntu. I would be prepared to wait a while if you have got this in hand, have you actually given this any thought? Please tell me whether I should ignore Ubuntu One and link up with Dropbox?

• Cause of laptop only booting once every 3-10 times

  My 3-year old Asus EEE laptop has been working flawlessly in the past, but in the last week it has started behaving oddly. When I boot, one of the following happens: Screen remains totally black. Absolutely nothing comes up. I need to retry booting. (Happens 70% of the time). Laptop starts regular boot. However, somewhere during the boot process it goes black and I need to retry (20% of the time). Screen turning black is more likely when I move the laptop around during boot. Laptop boots properly. Once booted, all is fine. But I'm afraid to turn it off and have been keeping the laptop running till the night. Additional details: All normal lights light up when I boot; whichever of the scenarios goes down. There are no odd sounds or beeps, whichever of the scenarios goes down. I thought it might be the SSD drive that is dying, but it does not use SMART and it appears difficult to troubleshoot. I tried booting with and without the battery, but the scenarios are identical. Before completely investigating the hard drive, I'd like to hear opinions regarding the cause of this problem. Is this most likely the hard drive, or could there be another cause for these symptoms? Using Arch Linux.

  I previously used this tutorial to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 perfectly. Now I have upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 8. And I would like to do a fresh install (and start all over again like the tutorial) of Ubuntu 12.10 replacing existing Ubuntu 12.04. I like the way the tutorial presents thus can anyone kindly let me know if the tutorial is compatible with what I wanna do now? I have tried doing little research whether this has been asked, but all I got are not too similar to my question, if there are topics like this I do apologise and feel free to close it. • Can't connect to FTP server from a specific location

  Last week while uploading website files to our server via FTP, the transfer failed. Ever since then, I haven't been able to connect to the server from work. I can connect just fine from home, or by using an FTP app on my cell phone as long as I'm on the cell network. I can't access the server from any machine on my work network. It's not a credential issue, either. The error message that I always get says that a connection cannot be established, and I am never prompted for my credentials. I have changed absolutely nothing on our domain controller or our firewall/router. I've contacted our ISP (who hosts the website/FTP server) and they can't find anything wrong on their end. They insist that it must be something here at the office that is blocking access. I've also tested access to other FTP servers (ea.com, nvidia.com, etc.) so I know that port 21 is not being blocked.   The way I see it you have a couple of options for including a blog on your site. Roll your own Install Something Like Wordpress Use a hosted service like Tumblr Obviously, if you can get away with Option 3 you have done yourself a favor. I have been using Tumblr and pointing blog.mydomain.com to the domains.tumblr.com CNAME to get a free blog that looks like it belongs to my site. I want to be able to display my blog on my root level hostname like mydomain.com/blog. The whole point of moving from blog.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/blog is for SEO purposes. Whats the best way to go about this and still get to leverage a hosted blogging platform like Tumblr?

• skype crashes, also audio problems 13.10

  Ive always had problems with skype ususally with audio, trying to keep the usb headphones set correctly. Wha tive found is that when i see the Pulseaudio server in the audio list in Skype, and thats my only option, Skype works good,...stable and reliable. Second issue: Its been crashing a bit, just locks up and the only thing to free it up is a reboot,.. These problems are under the new release 13.10. so concider this a bug report. DEVELOPERS: You all need to make a good channel for people to report bugs,.... OK thats all/

• How to remove items from an arraylist without shrinking the list [migrated]

  I have a case where I am using the ArrayList to keep a list of items that are keyed by their position in the list. Other objects reference the ArrayList items by their position. If I delete one of the items from the list, I don't want the list to shrink because that would invalidate all other references to items in the list (e.g. item 2 is now in position 1). My solution to the shrinking array list problem is to null the position in the arraylist so that the list will not shrink. I am curious whether this will free the memory formerly held by the item at that position. If there is a better way to accomplish this requirement, I would like to know about it.

• Can 7-zip be used in any *for profit* product without repercussions? [closed]

  I intend to use 7-zip as a utility in my product which I sell to customers. 7-zip will be shipped to them, along with my software, and 7-zip will need to perform some duties at the client side. Are there any legal issues to this ? Since 7-zip is free, I think I am allowed to use it .. but I want to be sure. Also, what happens if this piece of software ceases to be a freeware in the future ? Will i be able to use my old version ? Or will will I be forced to buy a license
