  • How to Add, Edit and Display one to many relationship entities in ASP.Net MVC 2?

    I am looking for best practices conforming to the MVC design pattern. My Entities have the following relationship. tblPortal PortalId PrortalName tblPortalAlias AliasId PortalId HttpAlias Each Portal can have many PortalAlias. I want to Add a New Portal and then Add the associated PortalAlias. I am confused on how I should structure the Views and how I should present the Views to the user. I am looking for some sample code on how to accomplish this. My thoughts are first present the Portal View, let the user add the Portal. Then click the Edit link on the Portal List View and on the Portal Edit View let them Add the PortalAlias. If so, what should the Edit View look like?     I have started doing asp.net mvc programming and like it more everyday. Most of the examples I have seen use separate views for viewing and editing details of a specific entity. E.g. - table of music albums linking to separate 'detail' and 'update' views [Action] | Title | Artist detail, update | Uuuh Baby | Barry White detail, update | Mr Mojo | Barry White With mvc how can I achieve a design where the R and the U (CRUD) are represented in a single view, and furthermore where the user can edit separate parts of the view, thus limiting the amount of data the user can edit before saving? Example mockup - editing album detials: I have achieved such a design with ajax calls, but Im curious how to do this without ajax. Parts of my own take on this can be seen below. I use a flag (enum EditCode) indicating which part of the view, if any, that has to render a form. Is such a design in accordance with the framework, could it be done more elegantly? I want to create navigation that is common across the entire site, but when I place the Html.Action into my master page, it only works on views associated with 1 controller.   • Is it a bad idea to run an asp.net app pool with the same identity as IIS's anon user?

    Subject says it all really, Thinking on security terms, I want to give each site on my server its own user account, so that they can't access each other's data. I also want to use integrated authentication for sql so i dont have any passwords knocking about in connection strings. Is it a bad idea to use the same account for the app pool identity and the anon user account for iis (im interested in answers for both v6 and 7)? Edit: ive seen this post describing how IIS7 allows you to automatically use the same account, but the question of whether its a good idea or not remains ;) If so, why? Thanks

    I'm using godaddy. I have 2 applications I want to install on the server. One named en and the other fr (english and french). On the en application, I checked Make Application Root. Now I assumed I could go to www.mysite.com and it automatically loads www.mysite.com/en/. I have to go to the directory manually. How do I fix this? My file structure is: www.mysite.com/en for the en app and www.mysite.com/fr for the fr app.

    Hi, I'm testing a web application that runs on a hypervisor. The database server and the webserver are seperate vm's that run on the same hypervisor. We did some tests and the functions perform ok. I want you guys to look at a screenshot of a permon log of the sql 2005 server on the busiest moment. The webserver perfmon log looks fine and it's obvious that we have enough resources to present the page in a timely fashion. http://d.imagehost.org/view/0919/heavyload http://d.imagehost.org/0253/heavyloadz.jpg Zoomed out The striped blue line maxing out is the Processor que length (scale 100,0) The green line at around value 30 is Available MBytes (scale 0,01) The rest of the counters are visible on the screenshot. The sql server machine has no CPU limitations on the hypervisor resources and has 5 vcpu's and 5 GB RAM. Can someone help me to interpret this log. Thanks

  • MS Ajax Libraries and Configured Assemblies

    Use Case You have a brand new IIS servers that has .Net 3.5 installed and are migrating sites to the new servers.  In the process of migrating sites you come across some sites that get an error about the version of AJAX libraries being references in the web.config.  In the web.config all the entries reference 1.0.61025.0, but the older version of the AJAX libraries are not installed on the new servers, only the latest version is installed that comes with .Net 3.5.  So what are the options to fix this issue. Solutions 1) Install the older version of the AJAX Libraries: Although this works, IMO it is never a great idea to install an older version of a library after a newer version has been installed.  Plus, if all new application use the latest versions, is it worth the effort of installing the older version for a few legacy applications? 2) Update the web.config files so all references use latest version (3.5.0.0):  This option is very time consuming and error prone. In addition, you will also have to update any pages where there is a register tag for the older libraries as well.  This would require you to redeploy any application that have this issue. 3) Use the Configured Assembly capabilities of .Net (aka: Assembly Bindings) to make any application that uses the older AJAX libraries to use the new AJAX libraries.  IMO, this is the easiest, quickest and least invasive way to fix the issue.  Below are the steps to implement this fix. Solution #3 Do the following steps on the IIS servers that the issue is occurring.  The 2 assemblies that need assemblies bindings created are: System.Web.Extension & System.Web.Extensions.Design 1) Go to Start - > All Program -> Administrative Tools -> Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration. 2) Right click on "Configured Assemblies" to view list of configured assemblies. 3) Left Click on right pane to bring up menu and choose "Add". 4) Make sure "Choose and assembly from the assembly cache is checked" and click the "Choose Assembly" button. 5) Choose System.Web.Extension (does not matter what version). 6) Click the "Finish" button. 7) Binding Policy Tab      - Enter Requested Version = 1.0.61025.0      - Enter New Version = 3.5.0.0 8) Repeat steps 2-7 for the System.Web.Extensions.Design assembly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: If "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration does not exist under Admin tools use mmc to access it (see below) 1) Start -> Run -> Enter MMC 2) File - > Add/Remove Snap-In then Click "Add" button 3) Choose ".Net 2.0 Configuration" then click "Add" button and then the "Close" Button. 4) On "Add/Remove Snapin" windows click the "OK" Button. 5) Expand the tree on the right and you can start following the directions above for adding the configured assemblies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Insufficient Permissions Problems with MSDeploy and TFS Build 2010

    I ran into these problems on a TFS 2010 RC setup where I wanted to deploy a web site as part of the nightly build: C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets (3481): Web deployment task failed.(An error occurred when reading the IIS Configuration File 'MACHINE/REDIRECTION'. The identity performing the operation was 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'.)  An error occurred when reading the IIS Configuration File 'MACHINE/REDIRECTION'. The identity performing the operation was 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Filename: \\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\redirection.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions  As you can see I’m running the build service as NETWORK SERVICE which is quite usual. The first thing I did then was to give NETWORK SERVICE read access to the whole directory where redirection.config is sitting; C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config. That gave me a new error: C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets (3481): Web deployment task failed. (Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.) The reason for this problem was that NETWORK SERVICE didn’t have write permission to the place where I’ve told MSDeploy to put the web site physically on the disk. Once I’d given the NETWORK SERVICE the right permissions, MSDeploy completed as expected! NOTE! I’ve not had this problem with TFS 2010 RTM, so it might be just a RC issue!

  • Adding a hyperlink in a client report definition file (RDLC)

    This post shows you how to add a hyperlink to your RDLC report. In a previous post, I showed you how to create an RDLC report. We have been given the requirement to the report we created earlier, the Northwind Product report, to add a column that will contain hyperlinks which are unique per row.  The URLs will be RESTful with the ProductID at the end. Clicking on the URL will take them to a website like so: http://localhost/products/3  where 3 is the primary key of the product row clicked on. To start off, open the RDLC and add a new column to the product table.   Add text to the header (Details) and row (Product Website). Right click on the row (not header) and select “TextBox properties” Select Action – Go to URL. You could hard code a URL here but what we need is a URL that changes based on the ProductID.   Click on the expression button (fx) The expression builder gives you access to several functions and constants including the fields in your dataset. See this reference for more details: Common Expressions for ReportViewer Reports. Add the following expression: = "http://localhost/products/" & Fields!ProductID.Value Click OK to exit the Expression Builder. The report will not render because hyperlinks are disabled by default in the ReportViewer control. To enable it, add the following in your page load event (where rvProducts is the ID of your ReportViewerControl): protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (!IsPostBack) { rvProducts.LocalReport.EnableHyperlinks = true; } } We want our links to open in a new window so set the HyperLinkTarget property of the ReportViewer control to “_blank”   We are done adding hyperlinks to our report. Clicking on the links for each product pops open a new windows. The URL has the ProductID added at the end. Enjoy!

  • Windows 7 Phone Database – Querying with Views and Filters

    I’ve just added a feature to Rapid Repository to greatly improve how the Windows 7 Phone Database is queried for performance (This is in the trunk not in Release V1.0). The main concept behind it is to create a View Model class which would have only the minimum data you need for a page. This View Model is then stored and retrieved rather than the whole list of entities. Another feature of the views is that they can be pre-filtered to even further improve performance when querying. You can download the source from the Microsoft Codeplex site http://rapidrepository.codeplex.com/. Setting up a view Lets say you have an entity that stores lots of data about a game result for example: GameScore entity public class GameScore : IRapidEntity {     public Guid Id { get; set; }     public string GamerId {get;set;}     public string Name { get; set; }     public Double Score { get; set; }     public Byte[] ThumbnailAvatar { get; set; }     public DateTime DateAdded { get; set; } }   On your page you want to display a list of scores but you only want to display the score and the date added, you create a View Model for displaying just those properties. GameScoreView public class GameScoreView : IRapidView {     public Guid Id { get; set; }     public Double Score { get; set; }     public DateTime DateAdded { get; set; } }   Now you have the view model, the first thing to do is set up the view at application start up. This is done using the following syntax. View Setup public MainPage() {     RapidRepository<GameScore>.AddView<GameScoreView>(x => new GameScoreView { DateAdded = x.DateAdded, Score = x.Score }); } As you can see, using a little bit of lambda syntax, you put in the code for constructing a single view, this is used internally for mapping an entity to a view. *Note* you do not need to map the Id property, this is done automatically, a view model id will always be the same as it’s corresponding entity.   Adding Filters One of the cool features of the view is that you can add filters to limit the amount of data stored in the view, this will dramatically improve performance. You can add multiple filters using the fluent syntax if required. In this example, lets say that you will only ever show the scores for the last 10 days, you could add a filter like the following: Add single filter public MainPage() {     RapidRepository<GameScore>.AddView<GameScoreView>(x => new GameScoreView { DateAdded = x.DateAdded, Score = x.Score })         .AddFilter(x => x.DateAdded > DateTime.Now.AddDays(-10)); } If you wanted to further limit the data, you could also say only scores above 100: Add multiple filters public MainPage() {     RapidRepository<GameScore>.AddView<GameScoreView>(x => new GameScoreView { DateAdded = x.DateAdded, Score = x.Score })         .AddFilter(x => x.DateAdded > DateTime.Now.AddDays(-10))         .AddFilter(x => x.Score > 100); }   Querying the view model So the important part is how to query the data. This is done using the repository, there is a method called Query which accepts the type of view as a generic parameter (you can have multiple View Model types per entity type) You can either use the result of the query method directly or perform further querying on the result is required. Querying the View public void DisplayScores() {     RapidRepository<GameScore> repository = new RapidRepository<GameScore>();     List<GameScoreView> scores = repository.Query<GameScoreView>();       // display logic } Further Filtering public void TodaysScores() {     RapidRepository<GameScore> repository = new RapidRepository<GameScore>();     List<GameScoreView> todaysScores = repository.Query<GameScoreView>().Where(x => x.DateAdded > DateTime.Now.AddDays(-1)).ToList();       // display logic }   Retrieving the actual entity Retrieving the actual entity can be done easily by using the GetById method on the repository. Say for example you allow the user to click on a specific score to get further information, you can use the Id populated in the returned View Model GameScoreView and use it directly on the repository to retrieve the full entity. Get Full Entity public void GetFullEntity(Guid gameScoreViewId) {     RapidRepository<GameScore> repository = new RapidRepository<GameScore>();     GameScore fullEntity = repository.GetById(gameScoreViewId);       // display logic } Synchronising The View If you are upgrading from Rapid Repository V1.0 and are likely to have data in the repository already, you will need to perform a synchronisation to ensure the views and entities are fully in sync. You can either do this as a one off during the application upgrade or if you are a little more cautious, you could run this at each application start up. Synchronise the view public void MyUpgradeTasks() {     RapidRepository<GameScore>.SynchroniseView<GameScoreView>(); } It’s worth noting that in normal operation, the view keeps itself in sync with the entities so this is only really required if you are upgrading from V1.0 to V2.0 when it gets released shortly.   Summary I really hope you like this feature, it will be great for performance and I believe supports good practice by promoting the use of View Models for specific pages. I’m hoping to produce a beta for this over the next few days, I just want to add some more tests and hopefully iron out any bugs. Approximately 40+ people showed up to listen to SharePoint MVP Eric Shupps, The SharePoint Cowboy to discuss all of the new features for both administrators and developers. All of the Tulsa SharePoint Interest Group Officers worked very hard to ensure that this event happened.
