• What Java portal server do you use?

  I've been tasked with learning Vignette and setting it up is a nightmare. There are many different components in the wizard. If something fails, you get a cryptic error message and then have to start again. This is the worst "Wizard" since Kwame Brown. Are there other Portal servers out there that are easy to configure, or at least seem to have kept a developer's sanity in mind during configuration? To those that have used several different portal servers, which is your favorite?

• Where does C# and the .NET Framework fail?

  In my non-programming life, I always attempt to use the approprite tool for the job, and I feel that I do the same in my programming life, but I find that I am choosing C# and .NET for almost everything. I'm finding it hard to come up with (realistic business) needs that cannot be met by .NET and C#. Obviously embedded systems might require something less bloated than the .NET Micro Framework, but I'm really looking for line of business type situations where .NET is not the best tool. I'm primarly a C# and .NET guy since its what I'm the most comfertable in, but I know a fair amount of C++, php, VB, powershell, batch files, and Java, as well as being versed in the web technologes (javascript, html/css). But I'm open minded about it my skill set and I'm looking for cases where C# and .NET are not the right tool for the job. The bottom line here, is that I feel that I'm choosing C# and .NET simply because I am very comfertable with it, so I'm looking for cases where you have chosen something other than .NET, even though you are primarly a .NET developer.

• Why isn't Xcode building a file in my project

  I have a static library project that I inherited from another developer. I added a class to the project and built it. When I include the static lib in another project, the build fails with a symbol not found error for the class that I added. I looked at the build logs for the static lib project and I noticed that the .m file isn't compiled. The file is clearly visible in Xcode, right next to all of the other class files. Can anyone think of a reason that the file wouldn't be built? How does Xcode discover the files that it builds?

  I'm a J2EE developer & we are using hibernate mapping with a PostgreSQL database. We have to keep track of any changes occurs in the database, in others words all previous & current values of any field should be saved. Each field can be any type (bytea, int, char...) With a simple table it is easy but we a graph of objects things are more difficult. So we have, speaking in a UML point of view, a graph of objects to store in the database with every changes & the user. Any idea or pattern how to do that?

My day to day job is as a .NET web developer so I am looking to use VMware Fusion to run VS and SQL server etc. As I've not run my dev environment in a VM before, I would like to know how others are setup. What apps to you have installed? In which environment? Where do you store your files? Within each environment, or some shared drive? Are there any gotchas? Or essentials I should know. • Copying a massive databse for local ruby on rails development?

  Hi guys, There is a massive database (GB) that I am working with now and all of the previous development has been done on a slicehost slice. I am trying to get ready for more developers to come in and work so I need each person to be able to setup his own machine for development, which means potentially copying this database. Selecting only the first X rows in each table to cut size could be problematic for data consistency. Is there any way around this, or is a 1 hour download for each developer going to be necessary? And beyond that, what if I need to copy the production DB down for dev purposes in the future? Sincerely, Tyler

  I have a GWT app with a bunch of textboxes. In firefox I would expect that when I type a word in a textbox that I have already typed in and submitted, that firefox would offer to autocomplete that text. But for this GWT app it is not happening. Also in IE it seems that none of my css stuff is loaded. And when I IE developer tools on my GWT page, it can focus in on any of the textboxes it just focuses on the encompassing DIV around all the textboxes.

• What alternatives are there in OS projects for c# similar to Joomla/Mambo/Drupal?

  I'm beginning a project with a client to build a web application and I'm a little stuck on which solution to go with. I've used Joomla for many clients in the past, but this client has specific requests that I KNOW I'm going to have to build myself. The problem I'm facing is that I work full time under the .NET spectrum and while I am a novice developer in PHP, and I've been studying Joomla's plug in architecture for about a month now, I am a lot more comfortable building something in ASP.NET than I am in PHP. My question is, what OS projects are out there that have a similar community following as Joomla/Mambo/Drupal, along with a plug in architecture that is somewhat akin to Joomla as well? I don't really have the time to build out a full blown CMS system in ASP.NET, but if something already exists that can give me X% (25%, 50%, something) of what Joomla has that will at least get me on the right path. Joomla just has too many extensions and too much of a community backing for me to pass it up if there's not something comparable in the ASP.NET realm.

I am talking about a seasoned C++ programmer (be she/he a developer, student, fan, all three, etc), who thinks (s)he knows something 99% of us never heard or dreamed about. Something that not only makes his/her work easier, but also cool and hackish.   Suppose we have a config file with sensitive passwords. I'd like to version control the whole project, including the config file as well, but I don't want to share my passwords. That could be good, if this config file: password=secret foo=bar becomes password=* foo=bar and the other users of the vcs could also set up the password on they own. To ignoring the file isn't a good approach, the developers should be aware, if the config file changes. Example: Local version: password=own_secret foo=bar config file in vcs: password=* foo=bar Then suddenly, the config file changes: password=* foo=bar baz=foo And the local version would become for each developer: password=own_secret foo=bar baz=foo This is my solution. How could I achieve this behaviour? How do you store your config files? Is there a way to do that, or should I hack something?

  Douglas Crockford describes the consequence of Javascript inquiring a node's style. How simply asking for the margin of a div causes the browser to 'reflow' the div in the browser's rendering engine four times. So that made me wonder, during the initial rendering of a page (or in Crockford's jargon a "web scroll") is it faster to write CSS that defines only the non-zero/non-default values? To provide an example: div{ margin-left:2px; } Than div{ margin:0 0 0 2px; } I know consequence of this 'savings' is insignificant, but I think it is still important to understand how the technologies are implemented. I downloaded a PHP proxy script from the Yahoo Developer site, ran it from command line and verified that it receives the XML from the server with a GET request. Now, I'm trying to connect to the PHP script within JS with no results. I have the following: <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.4.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $.ajax({ type:"GET", url:"proxy.php", dataType:"html", success:function(msg){ alert(msg); } }); </script> What this does, though, is to output the source of the PHP script in the alert box, not the XML!   I heard R is the "de facto" language amongst statistical software developers, and I'm giving it a try. I already know the basics, but it still looks "weird" to me (a C developer). I think it would be very useful to see a working example to see how a real R program is built. I thought that an R solution for any of the mlbench problems would be optimal, because I'm already familiar with it and it would allow me to compare it to other languages, but any other "toy problem" example is welcome. • Urban Airship - not receivng push notifications on device?

  I just installed everything to my app and tried to push, but no messages appear. The token for my device is saved so that's working. When I push, the website says it sent, but no message are received on the device. Right now I'm using a production certificate for push notifications, with a developer provision and not the distribution certificate. I tried cleaning the build and reinstalling but no luck since an extra app was installed from the same one. I used the code that is on the sample file tutorial, I think that's all the details. Don't know what to do next.

• What are the internal limits to WCF

  WCF has lots of limits imposed on it to protect against DoS attacks and other developer brainlessness. What are these limits? And how can they be overriden? Specifically, if I was to try to send a large number of messages in a short period of time to a variety of different clients, what are the internal WCF limits they may cause messages to be sent slowly. PS: this question is a much shorter version of my previous question that did not get much attention. EDIT I have answered the original question. The issue being my async calls were being turned into synchronous ones.

• Anyone realize success using Apple Mac OS 10.6 and Parallels 5 for a Visual Studio Dev machine?

  Greetings my wonderful StackOverflow family :) I grew up using Windows and switched to OSX as a Computer Science major in College. I've recently started my first real software developer job, and have a ThinkPad and Windows XP for developing ASP.NET / MS SQL applications (Visual Studio 2008). Question: Basically, I am wondering if any developers out there have had real success creating ASP.NET applications on a Mac using a VM? I've been fighting with Parallels 5 all week and finally have Windows 7 and VS 2008 running but my hot-keys are all screwed up. Is it worth the work to keep beating this thing into submission? Should I give up? Should I give Mono a try instead? Thanks Folks, I can't wait to see what you all think!

I was hoping to find some basic objects like Account, Contact, etc (which were listed on above url) so that I can do something like - SObject[] sObjArray = queryResult.getRecords(); for(SObject sObj : sObjArray){ Account acc = [Account] sObj; } [used above approach successfully in another webservice - 'Zuora'] However, I could not find Account class in the generated classes. I guess I am into wrong approach, but atleast I should be finding the classes listed in the reference API. Please help.

• Stack trace for C++ using gcc

  We use stack traces in proprietary assert like macro to catch developer mistakes - when error is caught, stack trace is printed. I find gcc's pair backtrace()/backtrace_symbols() methods insufficient: Names are mangled No line information 1st problem can be resolved by abi::__cxa_demangle. However 2nd problem s more tough. I found replacement for backtrace_symbols(). This is better than gcc's backtrace_symbols(), since it can retrieve line numbers (if compiled with -g) and you don't need to compile with -rdynamic. Hoverer the code is GNU licenced, so IMHO I can't use it in commercial code. Any proposals?

• Convert ASP.NET membership system to secure password storage

  I have a potential client that set up their website and membership system in ASP.NET 3.5. When their developer set up the system, it seems he turned off the security/hashing aspect of password storage and everything is stored in the clear. Is there a process to reinstall/change the secure password storage of ASP.NET membership without changing all of the passwords in the database? The client is worried that they'll lose their customers if they all have to go through a massive password change. I've always installed with security on by default, thus I don't know the effect of a switchover. Is there a way to convert the entire system to a secure password system without major effects on the users?
