  Disclaimer: I've never used technique which is described below. That's why there may occur some mistakes or misunderstandings in its description. I heard that some teams (developers) use 'pre-configured' tomcat. As I understand they add different jars to tomcat \lib folder and do something else. Once I've read something about recompilation (or reassembly?) of tomcat for certain needs. Just yesterday I heard a dialog where one developer sayd that his team-mates were not able to deploy the project until he would give them configured tomcat version. So, I wonder, what is it all about and why do they do it? What benefits can they gain from that?

• Question about rights for svn

  I have a web application written in asp.net mvc. I have in MyApp.Web assembly the list of views and and the content files(images, scripts, css, and so on). In MyApp.WebBase I have the rest of fonctionality(Controllers, domain(entities, repositories, services)). Now the question is the following: I want to give to third party html coder access only to MyApp.Web source code in order he to be able to compile the application locally and see the results. By other hand the developer team shoul have access to full source code. The problem is that in order the html coder to be able to compile the application locally he need in his project the references to the MyApp.WebBase.dll Can anyone help me? Thanks.

• Using .htaccess to replace backslash in URL with forward-slash

  I realise that a backslash should never appear in a URL in a form other than a URL escape code, however in this case the URL's are being generated by a .NET application for generating flashbooks. I have contacted the developer of this application with a bug report. In the interim i would like to use .htaccess to rewrite the offending backslashes. This is how the URLs appear in fiddler debugging proxy. www.example.com/folder/folder/thumbs%5C1.jpg I am using Firefox and it looks as though Firefox is translating them into the URL encoded equivalent ( \ == %5C1 ). Interestingly IE translates the backslash into a forward-slash automatically (not adhering to standards but convenient in this case). Is there a way to use .htaccess to rewrite all \ to /?

• Licensing your code in Mono

  I'm working with some code in Visual Studio. My parter-in-crime fellow developer has suggested that the code also be available to work under Mono. I'm impresed witht he work that is already done in Mono, but I'm very new to Mono, so I don't know what it can/cannot do. I've already written a class in C# using the .NET LicenseManager object. It writes to the windows registry, so I know I'll have to modify it so that it will use some compiler flags like #if Win32 or #if MONO. My question is two-fold: 1) Does Mono implement the same LicenseManager class structure? 2) If so, how do you guys lock down your code using LicenseManager in Linux? (i.e. Write to files, use a hardware dongle, compare to hardware serials, etc??)

  PHP is considered as an easy language of all, Why? Being an php developer, I haven't use any other language that much. And I know with php we gotta learn so much other things also like javascript ajax xml database jquery + all the cms like joomla, drupal, phpbb etc etc. And in web worls u always had to learn injecting maps, calendars, payment gatewaysetc Do learning other languages have these much dependencies? And if php easy than isn't it good thing to have easy language. I can't imagine to built a website in assembly language(Is it possible?)

I tried using the JavaScript API but I've found this is not compatible with FBML. I have looked through the FBML page on the developer wiki and found checks for practically everything else but no is user fan check. Any pointers in the right direction would be most appreciated. • Learning resources for Linux filesystem, command line, and structure

  Can anyone suggest some good materials for learning more about the Linux filesystem and command line? I have found myself frequently confused as to what programs go where on the Linux filesystem. I would like to learn how the various directories (var, etc, usr ...) are used and how to use the commandline more effectively. I come from the Windows development world (.NET developer) so I am very familiar with Windows system administration. However, when doing more and more work with PHP I found myself lost in the internals of Linux (specifically Ubuntu). For example I was having problems installing PEAR properly on my Ubuntu system and not understanding why it was installed where it was. All of my interactions with Linux machines is done via SSH so I would like to focus on the command line and the filesystem. Thanks for any suggestions.

• Can't read query string if default index file name is omitted?

  Is there an issue with IIS or ASP Classic where *Request.ServerVariables("QUERY_STRING")* returns blank if no default file name is given in the URL? On my local developer machine, I can do http://localhost/xslt/?opcs/abc which returns "opcs/abc". However, on our ancient web server, it returns nothing. I have to explicitly give it the default file name in the URL. Like so http://localhost/xslt/default.asp?opcs/abc While nothing too major, it is a little bit of a annoyance. One way I can maybe think of remidying the problem is have Javascript read the URL and return everything after the ?. Unfortunately, I do not know what version of IIS or ASP we are using. Thank you.

At work I'm a .net developer and we are starting to use DNN for some small projects around the office. I'd like the new business to be fully open source but it might be nice to use Dnn cause I will already have some experience with it from work. I'm worried that I'll be spreading myself too thin learning php/Lamp at home and .net at work. What does everyone recommend?

• Can someone recommend a resource/site/book to improve problem solving skills

  I am a reasonably experienced developer (.NET, c#, asp.NET etc) but I'd like to hone my problem solving skills. I find that when I come up against a complex problem I sometimes implement a solution that I feel could have been better had I analyzed the problem in a different way. Ideally what I am looking for is a resource of some type that has 'practice problems and solutions' as I think my skills will only get better by practicing this more and adopting better practices. I hope my question is not to vague and I wont get upset with people answering with opinions etc.. thanks

• BNRPersistence on the iPhone, and NSDocument

  I'm trying to get BNRPersistence running in an iPhone app, but I'm having a problem that I have no idea how to solve. Keep in mind I'm relatively new to iPhone dev. The problem is that BNRStoreDocument subclasses NSDocument, which exists in the Cocoa framework and thus isn't available on the iPhone. So obviously I'm getting compile errors that it can't find NSDocument. The developer of BNRPersistence states that it works on the iPhone, so I'm sure there a solution, I just don't what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• What would you like to see in an beginner's ASP.NET security book

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!) • Which Workflow Engine do you recommend?

  I am kicking around the idea of using a workflow engine on this upcoming project. We know that there is a lot of caveats with using a workflow engine and we have a lot of development experience in many platforms so we would be willing to let the choice of workflow engine take precedence over our favorite toolset or developer IDE. We are more interested in internal workflow (i.e. petri net for easily changeable ERP purposes without involving additional coder time) than external workflow (i.e. aggregating SOAP calls into a transaction aware, higher level SOA). Which workflow engine would you recommend? We have superficially looked at offerings by Oracle, Microsoft, and some open source stuff too. It's all very overwhelming so please respond only if you have real life experience with implementing internal workflow.

  I've read a lot about IBugTraqProvider interface and implementing an issue tracker into the commit dialog of TortoiseSVN. IBugTraqProvider is written here. Is there a more simpler way not to do it, building the plug-in and installing it on TortoiseSVN. The Document is not that clear that a developer can create its own plugin. I'm working with SalesForce as the Issue Tracker, and retrieved the WSDL file to integrate with the Working Items. Now I need to know how to connect it to ToortoiseSVN. Please any suggestions?

• Why is Visual Studio 2008 slow with Firefox?

  I am using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. I've made an ASP.NET MVC site which has 6 CSS files and 6 Javascript files in the HEAD element in the Site.Master file. When I do F5 or CTRL-F5 in Explorer or Opera, the site displays instantly. When I run my site in Firefox, it takes a SECOND for each CSS and each Javascript file on LOCALHOST, i.e. 12 seconds to load on localhost. What might I be able to change in the Firefox settings so it is as fast as Opera and Explorer? NEW INFO: Uninstalled Firebug completely, no yslow, no other add-ons. When I take out the CSS and Javascript files, then Firefox is as fast as the other browsers. What could be taking it so long on a local connection?

  I want to create a mobilesubstrate plugin for iPhone OS 3.2 or I tried to setup toolchain on the iPad device. I have installed the iphone-gcc_4.2-20090304-1-9_iphoneos-arm package and all the relevant packages from Cydia, but when it comes to compiling the simplest source file shows the following error: arm-apple-darwin9-g++ -I /var/toolchain/sys/ -c -dynamiclib ExampleHookLibrary.mm -o ExampleHookLibrary.o arm-apple-darwin9-g++: Internal error: Bus error (program cc1objplus) Please submit a full bug report.   I have a method with the following signature: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) "foo" needs to alter a Sample object, either the first argument or from the second argument it can extract its Sample. For example: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) { Sample out = null; if (sample != null) out = sample else out = aliquot.getSample() return out; } But that is so un-elegant, other than reading the API a developer does not know the reference of the first argument overrides the Sample of the second argument. Now, I could change "foo" to foo (SomeMagicalObject bar) where SomeMagicalObject is a tuple for Sample and Aliquot and holds some logic ... etc. But I am wondering, are there some patterns for this question?

• Why do software engineers hate writing documentation?

  I ask because I quite enjoy it! I'm talking about design documentation and implementation notes (NOT user manuals), which are non-existent in most of the codebases I've been handed. I can understand why a developer wouldn't want to write requirements (that's the analyst's job) or the user documentation (that's a technical writer's job) but I don't get why developers hate writing design docs. I don't think I would feel as if I'd finished the job if I only wrote the code and walked away -- mainly because when I've been introduced to code-only situations I've seen how hard it is to figure out what's been done and what the software does. I would hate for people to suffer the same situation when inheriting my code. What makes you loath writing supporting documentation for your code?

• Google groups not finding discussion thread but regular google search does?

  I'm having a problem with google groups and finding my own discussion threads. I go to the google group (in my case Android developer group) web view and try to search for my thread by entering the extact title of my thread. But it doesn't appear in the search results. On the other hand, when I search for the same title in the regular google web search, I get the thread right on top of the result list. I thought it might take a while until the groups index all new threads, but still after a few days, it still wouldn't show up. • Open source ASP.net webforms examples

  I learning ASP.net, and am looking to create a rather straightforward WebForms ASP.net application, but I have very limited examples to work with. Is there a site that has a lot of ASP.net WebForms projects that are downloadable? Books seem to focus on narrow aspects of using Webforms, like session control, or using master pages, but I'm looking for examples of how a whole app comes together.   When i put an NSOpenglView in NSSplitView, a problem occurs while dragging splitter. The openGLView and SplitView are resizing asynchronously. i found a solution in apple mail list thread http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/GLChildWindowDemo/Introduction/Intro.html and i found a solution with some carbon calls. but now i get link error (only in release mode). so i'v got two questions - is there any cocoa way to fix the splitter - gl problem? if no - how can i fix carbon linker errors in release mode?

• Why is x86 ugly? aka Why is x86 considered inferior when compared to others?

  Hello, recently I've been reading some SO archives and encountered statements against x86 architecture. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2667256/why-do-we-need-different-cpu-architecture-for-server-mini-mainframe-mixed-cor says "PC architecture is a mess, any OS developer would tell you that." http://stackoverflow.com/questions/82432/is-learning-assembly-language-worth-the-effort says "Realize that the x86 architecture is horrible at best" http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=976577 says "Most colleges teach assembly on something like MIPS because it's much simpler to understand, x86 assembly is really ugly" and many more comments like Compared to most architectures, X86 sucks pretty badly. It's definitely the conventional wisdom that X86 is inferior to MIPS, SPARC, and PowerPC x86 is ugly I tried searching but didn't find any reasons. I don't find x86 bad probably because this is the only architecture I'm familiar with. Can someone kindly give me reasons for considering x86 ugly/bad/inferior compared to others.
