  • X11 tunnelling through SSH from Fedora 3 server to Windows Vista client fails to work.

    Okay, I've tried using Xming and PuTTY, as well as Cygwin/X and Cygwin ssh, and it is not working. I've been able to run X applications locally, so it's not a client-side X problem.   • computer not recognizing hard drive

    Hey, a few days ago my computer wouldnt boot..said something along the lines of "Please insert correct boot media and press any key" Its oldish so I tried what I could and just went out to buy new hard drive. Yesterday, installed it and it worked fine..put Windows XP onto in sp3 etc, turned on today and the same thing has happened ! Tried changing cables, remove graphics card etc, restoring bios to default but nothing works. Motherboard : Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Ram : 2GB HD : 320gb Hitachi Any ideas? Thanks :)

  • How does java permgen relate to code size

    I've been reading a lot about java memory management, garbage collecting et al and I'm trying to find the best settings for my limited memory (1.7g on a small ec2 instance) I'm wondering if there is a direct correlation between my code size and the permgen setting. According to sun: The permanent generation is special because it holds data needed by the virtual machine to describe objects that do not have an equivalence at the Java language level. For example objects describing classes and methods are stored in the permanent generation. To me this means that it's literally storing my class def'ns etc... Does this mean there is a direct correlation between my compiled code size and the permgen I should be setting? My whole app is about 40mb and i noticed we're using 256mb permgen. I'm thinking maybe we're using memory that could be better allocated to dynamic code like object instances etc...

  • Skyrim: Heavy Performance Issues after a couple of location changes

    Okay, I've tried different solutions: ENB Series, removing certain mods, checking my FPS Rate, monitoring my resources, .ini tweaks. It's all just fine, I don't see what I'm missing. A couple of days ago, I bought Skyrim. Before I bought the game, I admit I had a pirated copy because my girlfriend actually wanted to buy me the game as a present, then said she didn't have enough money. Sick of waiting, I decided to buy the game by myself. The ridiculous part is, it worked better cracked than it does now uncracked. As the title suggests, after entering and leaving houses a couple of times, my performance obviously drops extremely. My build is just fine, Intel i5 quad core processor, NVIDIA GTX 560 Ti from Gigabyte, actually stock-OC, but manually downclocked to usual settings using appropriate Gigabyte software. This fixed the CTD issues I had before with both Skyrim and BF3. I have 4GB RAM. A website about Game Tweaks suggested that my HDD may be too slow. A screenshot of a Windows Performance Index sample with the subscription "This is likely to cause issues" showed the HDD with a performance index of 5.9, the exact same mine has, so I was playing with the thought to purchase an SSD instead, load games onto it that really need it like Skyrim, and hope it'd do the trick. Unfortunately, SSDs are likewise expensive, compared to "normal" HDDs... I'm really getting desperate about it. My save is gone because the patches made it impossible to load saves of the unpatched version and I already saved more than 80 times despite being only level 8, just because every time I interact with a door leading me to another location I'm scared the game will drop again. I can't even play for 30 mins straight anymore, it's just no fun at all. I've researched for a couple of days before I decided to post my question here. Any help is appreciated, I don't want to regret having bought the game... Since it actually is the best game I've played possibly for ever. Sincerely. P.S.: I don't think it's necessary to say, but still, of course I'm playing on PC. P.P.S.: After monitoring both my PC resources including CPU usage and HDD usage as well as the GPU usage, I don't see any changes even after the said event.   • XP Pro product keys

    I have a very serious problem. After my XP Home OS was trashed by rogue software - a trial of a thing named TuneUp - I did a clean install, including HDD reformat of Windows XP Pro from a purchased OEM disk. This was Service Pack 2, subsequently upgraded to SP3. I had conclusively mislaid the product key. I had to access data on the machine VERY urgently and I did not then know that under some circumstances Microsoft might agree to provide a replacement. I found what I now know must have been a pirate key on the Net which enabled installation but NOT activation. This of course left me functional but 30 days before meltdown - about 20 days left as I write this. Various retailers want around £100 for retail with matching product key. - this would be paying twice over just to continue use on the same computer. I have neither need nor intention of installing XP Pro on any other computer. I have tried a number of applications claiming to deal with this problem but none of them work. A Belarc profile shows that the pirate key has replaced the original one on the system. I have now found two keys, one of which might be the original, but neither work. I am about to upgrade the HDD and it looks like I will just be passing the problem on when I install XP. I have retrieved a key from the disk, but it is seemingly one Microsoft use in production and does not work. It is 76487-OEM-0015242-71798. The keys I have, one of which which might or might not be the original, are CD87T-HFP4G-V7X7H-8VY68-W7D7M and FC8GV-8Y7G7-XKD7P-Y47XF-P829W (or P819W - I believe it to be the latter, but the box will not accept it). The pirate key which has enabled this install and which is now stored on the system but will not activate is QQHHK-T4DKG-74KG7-BQB9G-W47KG. In these circumstances is it likely that Microsoft would issue a replacement? Is there any other solution? I am not trying to defraud anyone, just to keep on using the product I legitimately bought. You must install the Java Development Kit, the rjb ruby gem, and set the $JAVA_HOME variable. [-] Falling back to static signed applet. This exploit will still work, but the CERTCN and APPLETNAME variables will be ignored. I have installed sun-java6-jdk, and gem install rjb And patch to JAVA look working because: ls $JAVA_HOME bin ext jre LICENSE README.html COPYRIGHT include lib man THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.txt If anyone, have any idea... Except installation of backtrack what is not possible... Because i need use it on my Ubuntu, (have to virtualize XP for test) regards

    As long as I can remember, the preferred print driver has been PCL5 or PCL6. It seems that PCL5 is going the way of the dodo, and PCL6 has more problems than I care to list here (pcl xl errors). It seems that the most reliable print driver these days is the PS (postscript) driver. Just wondering what everyone elses' experience has been and what kind of driver they prefer?

  • Fan Error on Lenovo R61

    Problem Since the last two days, my Lenovo R61 is giving me a "Fan Error" message during boot, after showing which, it powers down. It does so for 3-4 boot attempts, and after a bit of tapping and such human treatment, in the 6th or so attempt, it luckily starts. Question Why is this happening ? How do I fix it ?     I'm developing on my ubuntu 9.10 machine for the web (php). I'm using it sendmail for sending mails, and while developing on my local machine, I send local mails (to my user 'doron'). Up until a few days ago, I was able to send mails both from php's mail() function, and from the command line using the mail command. I'm using sendmail with mailutils. Since the last few days, it seems like it stopped working.   • Filtering Security Logs by User and Logon Type

    I have been asked to find out when a user has logged on to the system in the last week. Now the audit logs in Windows should contain all the info I need. I think if I search for Event ID 4624 (Logon Success) with a specific AD user and Logon Type 2 (Interactive Logon) that it should give me the information I need, but for the life of my I cannot figure out how to actually filter the Event Log to get this information. Is it possible inside of the Event Viewer or do you need to use an external tool to parse it to this level? I found http://nerdsknowbest.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/filter-security-event-logs-by-user-in.html which seemed to be part of what I needed. I modified it slightly to only give me the last 7 days worth. Below is the XML I tried. <QueryList> <Query Id="0" Path="Security"> <Select Path="Security">*[System[(EventID=4624) and TimeCreated[timediff(@SystemTime) &lt;= 604800000]]]</Select> <Select Path="Security">*[EventData[Data[@Name='Logon Type']='2']]</Select> <Select Path="Security">*[EventData[Data[@Name='subjectUsername']='Domain\Username']]</Select> </Query> </QueryList> It only gave me the last 7 days, but the rest of it did not work. I can get it to produce the results correctly until I add in the LogonType line. After that, it returns no results. Any idea why this might be? EDIT 2 I updated the LogonType line to the following: EventData[Data[@Name='LogonType'] and (Data='2' or Data='7')] This should capture Workstation Logons as well as Workstation Unlocks, but I still get nothing. I then modify it to search for other Logon Types like 3, or 8 which it finds plenty of. This leads me to believe that the query works correctly, but for some reason there are no entries in the Event Logs with Logon Type equalling 2 and this makes no sense to me. Is it possible to turn this off?

This suggests a (10.4 only?) solution, but although i have the developer tools installed i don't have /Library/Spotlight/SourceCode.mdimporter. Is there a different procedure for Snow Leopard or did i miss something?

  • Why Buy Hardrives with storage server from a vendor?

    Hi all, Im just browsing around at storage server's like the Dell MD100/ MD3000 and the Sun J4200 and although the storage server seems reasonable (approx $3000-$4000 AUD) the hard-drives that you buy to go along with them seems exorbitantly expensive. And I'm not sure why. Surely at most they are using good quality RAID level 7200rpm SATA hdd, but even then they are still charging almost 4 times the price. What is the advantage to buying these from them. I can see if one fails then the vendor replacing it is convenient. But at that price you could buy double the amount of hdd and just claim on warranty directly with the manufacturer. It would be much cheaper and you wouldn't be relying on someone else to fix your problems. Is this the case of "you don't get fired if you buy IBM?" mentality or is there some reason I'm not grasping here? Cheers Mark

  • My computer's dying :(

    Hi All I have a sweet computer and have never had any real problems with it until now. I recently formatted my computer and all was well. But now my monitor randomly flickers. The monitor will just go black for about a second or two, then it'll return back to its normal state with all the stuff still on the screen. This is getting progressively worse. Another problem that has started is my computer randomly restarts. (I've managed to prevent it from restarting by removing the check in Automatically Restart from the Startup and Recovery Dialog. But I know this doesn't solve the problem). It also completely freezes up on me. One last thing, this morning I got a big blue screen. I can't remember what it said, but if it happens again I will take note of it and repost. Or if I can find some kind of a log file containing that bluescreen error I will post. I have checked all cords, and they're all fine. Nothing's loose. My computer isn't overheating either. I've taken the case off for 3 whole days and haven't used the computer for those 3 days, which has had no effect. I've checked the connections inside and nothing's loose there either. I know there's nothing wrong with my monitor because my friend has 2 computers and it works perfectly on those computers. I don't understand how my computer could suddenly become so unstable. I'm almost certain that I have no viruses; I full-scan my pc everyday for nastys, and have strict firewall settings. Anyway, I don't see how it could be a virus anyway simply due to the fact that I had these problems right after I formatted, and before I even had the chance to install or copy anything or even connect to the internet. I know it has nothing to do with the way I formatted the computer too, I've been fixing computers for years. Sorry for rambling on, just making sure I don't leave anything out. Has anybody else had this problem? Can somebody please try to help me with this? Thank you :)

  • Brand new Mac Pro tower fan suddenly runs full-tilt

    My Quad-Core Mac Pro tower is two days old. Initially, I was impressed with how quiet it was compared to my older Macbook Pro. Then on day two, for some reason it started running very loudly. It's not just a "little" loud- my wife walked into the room and asked what the noise was. At first I thought this was just because I was hitting the CPU a bit (importing my iPhone library into iLife '09, and running Eclipse). But now that that's done, Activity Monitor shows a virtually idle CPU; there's nothing running that ought to be causing this, as far as I can tell. I tried powering it off & letting it cool down for a few minutes to no avail; about 10 seconds after powering up, the box gets loud again. I took a look at it with the side cover off, and it seems to be the fan near the top middle, between the power supply and the disk drive. It can't be a dust issue, as the machine is only 2 days old (and I peeked inside anyway just to be sure- clean). I did do a software update over the past 24 hours or so, but I can't say that it occurred immediately after that. I also did a migration of my old apps and data from my MBPro, for what it's worth. Why is it suddenly so loud? How can I monitor the fan speed and various system temperatures? Here's a link to my temps and fan speeds. UPDATE 1: Took it to the Apple Store. They took it in the back (where it's presumably quieter) and ran a fan diagnostic; no problems were found. The guy also told me that it was "a little loud", but normal. I don't buy it. It was virtually silent the first 24 hours I was using it. They would not replace/service it in the store (grrr... that's why I went there, as directed by Apple Care) but said I could get a replacement from the online store, as it was just purchased. I think I will try that. UPDATE 2: Apple is letting me send it back for a replacement. Glad to see so many responses to this question mentioning that the MacPros are usually silent; it's not all just in my head. :-)
