  • When is a domain computer account scheduled to change the password?

    I understand domain-joined computers have machine accounts in AD and these accounts have passwords that expire (apparently every 30 days by default) and those passwords are automatically changed without user intervention. Given that this is known to cause issues when restoring snapshots of domain-joined virtual machines, is it possible to query the domain-joined computer or AD to determine when the machine account password is next scheduled to be changed?

  • Windows 2003 X64 Std page file usage

    Just trying to understand why I'm seeing what I'm seeing on this system. Pagefile performance counters are telling me i'm @ about 1.5% used with my page file, settings for the file are 2GB-4GB, but task manager was showing 13GB usage: Oddly enough, it just sunk down: This machine has IBM DB2 9.5 workgroup edition running on it. Thoughts??? Actually, just learned the developer had just stopped DB2, hence the huge drop, just not understand the difference in the PF usage in task manager vs perf counters?

  • Virtual Private Hosting DNS configuration

    I did a great deal of reading here before posting this because I didn't want to post a duplicate - but I'm on a bit of a deadline and getting frustrated, so here goes... I very, very, very sincerely apologize if this is long winded or hard to read. Please - please just ask for any information or clarification and I will give it as quickly as I possibly can. This has become very frustrating to me and this is the last place I know to turn. I have no experience with setting up DNS, no experience with nameservers, and no peers to go to for help. So this is kind of my last ditch effort. The task of setting up a private server has, through circumstances beyond my control, fallen into my lap. I own a domain (hereafter referred to as yyy.com) and have always used shared hosting - I buy a package and just point it to the domain nameservers they give me. It's always been simple. yyy.com is registered with network solutions Now I have purchased a Virtual Private Hosting package from GoDaddy.com - and it comes with Plesk 11. I have no earthly idea how to begin to get the right nameserver for yyy.com. I have gone through the instructions and have wound up exceedingly frustrated. I have 2 IP addresses from GoDaddy for the server. This is what I have so far, and I cannot tell if it is working (Since propogation takes so long, it is extremely hard to test for me) IP 1 : XX.XX.XX.XX IP 2 : YY.YY.YY.YY (obviously hidden for privacy) Now after going through the documentation setup and waiting a few days, this is the setup I have - and so far it does not appear to be working.     I've been told to assume it takes as long as 48 hours for a DNS change to propagate throughout the entire Internet, because some DNS servers cache their entries for longer than my TTL. However, for years and across ISPs and domains, every time I've made a DNS change I see the effects within a couple of hours. Is it still true that I need to assume a full two days for everyone to see my changes?

  • Extremely slow startup of tomcat

    I have a tomcat 7 installation on a Solaris 10 server. My problem is that starting the server (or deploying a new war) is extremely slow. It usually take 30 - 60 minutes. The war application is a medium sized grails application so there are quite a a lot of files. The server is running other server applications as well but from my basic skills I don't see this as a problem. Can anyone give me some tips on how to analyse this? Settings in Tomcat, java, server, disc access or something else? I use these parameters to tomcat: CATALINA_OPTS="-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote=true -Djava.awt.headless=true -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -server -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -XX:NewSize=256m -XX:MaxNewSize=256m -XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:+DisableExplicitGC" And I use a 32 bit java 1.6.

  • glassfish v3 - update all pakages via command line on linux

    Does anyone know how to do this? I just want a one-shot command to "update everything" over the command line? This is for a remote server so it must be over the command line. I used: $ sudo pkg list -u to see the list of packages that are out of date, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to say, "ok, update them". I have scoured the web for clues, but to no avail :( This is classic Sun Solaris-type patching that is the exact reason I am now on Linux. Please help!! Thanks :) Jamie

    Is it possible to trace which file or process or database query is effecting the load on a VPS? I am using Centos with 512 MB Guarantee Memory and 1 GB burst Memory, I am running 3 wordpress sites from it, where all are having daily traffic of 30-100 visitors each, After every 2-3 days I need to restart my VPS because the resources are taking high usage of memory, I tried running top command and it shows Apache as high, But is it possible to check which website is taking load? Now while developing the application using the Visual Studio 2008 then Developer Web Server it provides when build the site was able to access the location. However when the site is deployed on the IIS its saying Unable to access the file because of insufficient permissions.   • Windows 7 accounts on a 2008r2 DC keep getting locked out randomly

    As the title states, this happens randomly to Windows 7 accounts on our Windows 2008R2 domain controller. We just had this start happening after changing from 123together hosted exchange to Rackspace hosted exchange. Also around this time our passwords on the DC started expiring, but not the exact day, and everyone has different days they need to change it before. It has only affected 10 out of 30 accounts, and I see no link between them. What are some fixes I should run or things to look for?

  • USB mouse shuts down the laptop!

    For the past two days, whenever I plug in my USB mouse (which has been working for a long time, previously) into the laptop, my computer restarts! I tried changing mice, but the same thing happens. I have 3 ports, usually, I try one port and the laser does not come on, then I try another one and the laser comes and and off, then I again take out and put it in any port and the damn thing just turns off the computer.   • What happens in case of utility power failure?

    (in the office) Today, the UPS battery replace warning light lit up and there was a slight panic as the all the technical people will not be around the next few days. But after thinking a bit further, I realise that in case of power failure, no client computers will be able to turn on in the first place and operations will be disrupted regardless of whether the UPS keeps the server up. This makes me wonder if the UPS is really such a critical component? What do you think?
