• Connection Issue

  Desktop computer, connected directly into a Comcast modem. Every so often, at seemingly random intervals, my connection will drop. This could be while in the middle of browsing, or when I'm not even at the computer. When the connection drops, the modem still shows 4 green lights. The modem is connected to a splitter (cable and internet in same room), and then directly to the wall. To recover from the problem, I am forced to restart my computer, at which point everything works fine again. I have tried an ipconfig/release and renew, it tells me that it is unable to contact the DHCP server, and thus can't renew. I have updated the NICs driver, no luck. I have changed the ethernet cord, no luck. I have had Comcast replace the modem, no luck. The only thing I can think of that hasn't been replaced is the cords connecting the modem to the wall and the splitter. Can anyone think of anything else I may be able to do to isolate what's causing the issue?

• 1 document pending in printer queue in System Tray that won't go away

  Edit: I didn't want to do it, but I restarted my computer - cleared the problem right away. Though if I were running a Windows 2003/2008 server, I would hate to have to restart the domain controller just to get rid of this irritating problem. If I run into this problem again, I'm going to try that remove printer/reinstall printer thing. Thanks for your help @Psychogeek. Points for your attempt. Running Windows 7, 32-bit Professional. My printer is an HP OfficeJet Wireless 8500. It's connected to my network wirelessly through TCP/IP as a standalone device. I was having some print problems awhile back and had to do some print spooler stuff as part of my troubleshooting (stopping the Print Spooler service, clearing the print spooler files from C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and then restarting the service). I've finally narrowed it down to it being application specific, so that's that. However, as a leftover from all that troubleshooting, my printer icon is stuck in the tray - when I mouseover the icon, Windows says that there is 1 document(s) pending for my username. However, when I open up that printer's queue, there's nothing in there. I restarted the Printer Spooler service and also checked C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS if there's anything in there - nothing. I did a quick Google search and an answer from one of those "reps" at the Microsoft Socialnet site says for me to uninstall and reinstall the printer. The funny thing is, when I send print jobs, they print just fine - that 1 mystery document stuck in queue isn't stopping anything from happening. Short of having to do that, are there any other quick troubleshooting steps I may be missing?

• Redis 2.0.3 would not let go of deleted appendonly.aof file after BGREWRITEAOF

• Windows 3 Animated Background/Desktop/Wallpaper

  In the summer of 1995, I visited some family in Los Angeles. My uncle had a computer with Windows 3 (or some version thereof since Windows 95 had not been released yet). In Windows 3, there was no desktop or wallpaper like in later versions; instead you could set it to a simple pattern (still possible in later versions before XP) like hounds-tooth or bricks (interestingly, there seems to be next to nothing available on the Internet about this anymore; no screenshots and almost no pages). I recall being amused when I found a program (on the still young “world-wide web”) that would actually let you set an animated background. It was smooth and fluid and was quite an amazing thing at the time. If I recall correctly, it had several built-in animations including one of a light-orange-pink background over which storks flew towards the top-left, possibly with some light stuff floating in the “background” (they were actually animated and flapped their wings, not simply translated coordinates). The storks were somewhat simplified, black-line drawings. Over the years, I’ve tried finding it again a few times but never could. Worse, it’s become harder and harder over time as new programs came out and polluted the search results. I’m hoping that someone remembers this software and knows some useful information like the author or where to download it. (No, it’s not ScreenPaper. That was created in 1997 to let you set a screensaver as the Windows 95/NT4 background. This was at least two years earlier for Windows 3 and I’m almost certain it had these animations built-in—I don’t recall any stork screensavers for Windows 3.)

• How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

  I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me. • Error occurs when Win 7 opens

  I have an HP customized laptop barely a week old. Since yesterday it has given me an error message while opening Windows- every time. it gives error code (0x40000015) refers to an exception at location (0x0033fa4d). I have 64 bit Win 7 and had been transferring files. And installing programs. 8 GB Ram 650 gb hard drive. Not sure which program caused this. Q's that I've seen with this error code all say it occurs while shutting down. A search re. error code told me to use a removal tool. When I downloaded the tool,I got a message saying it is not compatible with Windows 7. Is that really possible? Search re. location code yielded nothing I am an intermediate user. I can restore to an earlier time but I don't know which program might do this again.

• Virtual host config issues in osx 10.7 server app

  I have two mac mini lion servers setup to run as production and staging machines. My sysadmin decided on these machines over the previous CentOS we had because it had an "interface" to be able to manage it, rather than just the terminal. To be honest, I prefer the terminal. My problem is, the mac osx 10.7 server.app seems to be having issues with the creation of virtual hosts in the 'Web' section. It seems VERY touchy. For example, I cannot create a http virtual host first. I have to create a https host first with a unique dns name 9e..g vuly6), then create the http host with a different dns name to the first (e.g. www), or it appears to override it the first one, even though one is ssl and one is non-ssl. Further, it seems to override perfectly good configurations at random. For example, the default sites directory is usually /Users/default/Sites/Customsites or something, but sometimes when I load the server.app it changes to /var/empty. Also, if I change or add extra virtual hosts after the first one or two, it starts to mess up and the first two virtual hosts start having issues. Has anyone had any experience with setting up virtual hosts via this app? Am I able to manually create these virtual hosts, without using the app, and without the app overriding my settings when I restart apache?

• WinPcap/Wireshark install: where is packet.ddl?

  I have Wireshark installed, and I'm getting this error: The NPF driver isn't running. You may have trouble capturing or listing interfaces. I realize this is something to do with WinPcap. It's not in control panel, as the FAQ states it should be. I've tried installing it, and it says that there is a previous version installed. This leaves me to believe this is the problem: To be absolutely sure that WinPcap has been installed, please look at your system folder: you should find files called packet.* and wpcap.dll. Please check the file dates: these should be compatible with the WinPcap release dates. We've had reports of trojans or other malware that silently install the WinPcap driver, NPF.sys. If you've been infected by them, you'll probably see the driver file in Windows\System32\Drivers, but no entries in the "Add or Remove Programs" applet and no dlls. I've searched my hard drive, but the only path is this: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\packet.dll Is this the file they are talking about? Should I delete this file? I'm not quite sure, so I thought I'd verify that this file is the right one.

• Working with barcode fonts in Word

  I need to create labels in Microsoft Word 2010 with numbers encoded as barcodes. The barcode's format (ean, code39, upc, etc) does not matter. I have downloaded a barcode conversion font that I found at this site. When I type the number that I want and then I format it with my new font, it produces a barcode. I then print it on an OKI laser printer (1200 dpi). The result seems to be fine, at least for common people. But, when I try to scan it, nothing happens. I tried both with a barcode scanner and a data collector, but neither of them read the barcode. My barcode scanner is working fine, because I can read commercial barcodes printed on products. Does anybody have any advice? How do I do this kind of stuff? I want to do it using Word because I will generate labels using Mail Merge. Therefore using external programs aren't option for me.

• httpd.config Easy Apache WHM CentOS

  First let me explain how I got to this situation. I run a Streaming Video Site. Videos are about 100-250MB in size at any given time there are 500 people on the site. So I guess that would make then static. Recently My site started getting really slow and the only way to fix it temporarily was to restart apache. Now there was no change in traffic that could have caused this. My site is not being attacked. My hosting company recomended to implement mpm_mod and suPHP. They did that by using Easy Apache in WHMS. Then everything was working fine but a little slow. I researched around and to my understanding that mpm will do that but be more table. I was told that installing FastCGI would speed things up just enough. Well that made everything worse. The site is slow and time's out. I used WHM and took off fastCGI but its still the same, it seems like everything i do as of now nothing changes. I even did a roll back on the htconfig file but that didn't work. I'm not sure how to fix this. and my hosting network guy wont be able to touch the problem until Tuesday. I have root access.

• Shared printer stops working on clients but not host computer

  I have a Brother MFC-7420 USB all-in-one laser printer. It is plugin via USB to my Windows 7 x64 machine. I have it shared to a few users on my home network. My wife's laptop running Vista x64 can normally print fine to the printer. However it seems that every day or two, when she pushes print on a something it just sits in her laptop's print queue and never makes it to my desktop. The only thing that seems to fix this is if she restarts her laptop. Not a big deal but this problem is sort of annoying. I don't know if this affects but the laptop is put into hibernate at night and I turn my desktop off at night. Does anyone know why this happens and if there is something easy to do to fix the problem besides restart the computer? EDIT: I was thinking that maybe my wife's laptop loses its connection to the printer. Is there a way to reset a connection to a shared printer? Or maybe reauth with the printer?

• Why doesn't apache2 consistently load template fragments from memcached?

  I run a webserver on an ubuntu box in the rackspacecloud with django 1.0x, apache2/WSGI and memcached 1.2.2. Some of my templates make use of template fragment caching: {% load cache %} {% cache 604800 keyname %} <!-- cache: {% now "H:i, j. b" %} --> {{ my_content }} {% endcache %} When I reload apache2 everything is fine. If keyname is not set, my_content is generated and keyname is set in memcached. After that, my_content is served from memcached. My problem is that after some hours (notably less time than 604800 seconds ), apache2 seems to stop talking to memcached, and my_content is generated from scratch everytime. When this happens I can still set and get keys from memcached from my python shell. Memcached also has more than enough memory to store keys. But to get apache2 to start talking to memcached again I have to restart apache2, and then it will once again start to get the now several hours old keys from memcached. What can be the reason for this behaviour, and how do I fix it?

• How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? • Body of email breaks distribution list in exchange?

  Hi, I have a very odd problem that I'm not sure is a programming issue or a server issue :-p. Basically I'm sending an email to an exchange distribution list that includes a PHP stack trace; during certain faults the trace includes really high level information such as the machine's environment variables (during file reads, etc.). I went through a copy of the email line by line until the email sent and it appears the line: [SUDO_COMMAND] => /etc/init.d/httpd restart is the culprit. Adding a string replacement in before the email is sent allows a successful send. What I don't understand is WHY these stream of characters are causing the issue ONLY on the distribution email. If I send the email to myself as well, i.e. "[email protected]; [email protected]", then I get the email fine. Re-ordering the list doesn't make a difference the group never gets the email. Because the individual gets the email and not the group I'm assuming the fault is with exchange and some rogue filtering - I've gone through it with the sysadmins and there's no filtering of any sort on that group... so maybe it's a bug? I can't find anyone else having recorded this specific fault so I figured I'd open it here. For now I'm just not using the distribution list but it'd be nice to eventually find the solution. • Python coding with VLC player (quite a basic query I expect)

  I'm fairly new to the whole coding realm so my knowledge is fairly limited, and I can't seem to find any basic tutorials on how to use scripts with VLC player. More specifically, the reason I'm asking here is because I stumbled across a post on this site about playing random clips from random videos on VLC player automatically. This is the forum post: Playback random section from multiple videos changing every 5 minutes My situation is similar to this lovely gentleman's was, though he clearly knows a lot more about coding than I do. In short, I'd like to copy this coding into a file of some sort and apply it to VLC player myself. Only I'm not sure what file type I'd have to save it as (I have Python by the way, and I tried saving it as a .py file but I didn't know if it was correct or where to go from there). Additionally, I'm not sure how to get VLC to "read" the script, so to speak - is there a specific location the file needs to be, and do I run the script from another program or through VLC? I'll reiterate that I'm relatively new to this, so if anybody would be so kind as to post a quick list of steps on how to save/place the file and use it with VLC player I really would appreciate it! P.S. I'm not computer illiterate, I'm fine with most programs and I'd understand if you just said things like "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins" or "in VLC, select Tools Plugins and extensions", I just wouldn't catch on to anything about adding a line of coding that does something without being told exactly what to write! • Windows XP Language, explorer.exe

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • Split Tunnel VPN using incorrect Tunnel

  Our company has a handful of field offices that have recently been setup with a regular internet connection after we removed the T1 and router that connected them directly to our network. Now, when the users are in the office, they log in to the VPN to be able to connect to the network. For the sake of them being able to print and scan from the local multi-function we have setup a split tunnel VPN. We currently have about 15-20 users using this setup around the country without any problems. Recently one of our users started having problems accessing internal programs/sites when connecting from both home and the office. There are three other users in the same office and they do not have this problem. I assumed that it was something with the computer and went ahead and replaced it with another of the same model. The computer worked fine in our home office; however, when the user received it, she had the exact same problem both at home and in the field office. Thinking it may be a NIC driver issue I sent her another computer, this time a different model, same problem occurred. If I update the host file to point to the correct paths, things will work, and if I connect via a normal VPN connection everything works, but the user cannot scan or print - which is a problem. Have tried to find ways to create another tunnel on a normal VPN and have tried to find ways to force the correct tunnel on the split tunnel VPN. It appears that there is something related to the ISP because if I connect to Comcast or Verizon it is fine but once she connects to Insite then she has problems. I have been unable to get any support from Insite as they don't feel the issue is with them. We use a Nortel VPN client. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

• Apache2 process stuck at 100% cpu, CLOSE_WAIT socket lingering

  I've troubleshooted the heck out of this today, and I can't seem to find any information on how to determine what is happening exactly. Basically, on my development server, another developer is causing CLOSE_WAIT connections that eat up one or more apache2 processes for several hours if I don't restart apache2. strace on any of the processes yields no information, only that it was able to attach. mod_proxy is not enabled. KeepAlive is on, KeepAliveTimeout is 15 seconds, MaxKeepAliveRequests is 100. From what I've been reading, this may or may not be an apache issue at all, just that that's how CLOSE_WAIT works (the server is waiting for a FIN packet to close the connection). I just can't believe that a server would be crippled so easily by not receiving a packet from a remote host telling it to close the connection. Especially without any intervention for well over an hour. Any tips? I'm about to pull my hair out. Edit : Also, there are no unusual entries in any apache log files. Edit 2: lsof -i shows only a single CLOSE_WAIT per hanging process. (That's what has been bothering me about this, as most other discussions talk about many CLOSE_WAIT connections, while I only have one per process.) The nature of the code that is running (php) doesn't really lend itself to closing open connections and whatnot. I can run the same code that he is executing with the same session data, and not result in a hanging process.

• 32bit SQLServer with AWE NOT enabled. Buffer Cache Hit Ratio High, Disk Read Queue VERY HIGH, WHY?

  We have a "SQLServer 2005 SP3 32bit Enterprise Edition" running on a 32 bit Windows 2003 32bit Enterprise Edition 12GB RAM with AWE enabled using RAID5(5 pysical disks). We tuned AWE to enabled and restart sqlserver this afternoon after work, hope the performance will be better than old time. But there is something that we are very confused. On working days, SQLServer has a very bad performance. When we are looking for reasons, we check Windows Performance counter. Avg. Disk Read Queue Lenght > 140 Avg. Disk Write Queue Length < 1 SQL Server Buffer Cache Hit Ratio > 96% %Processor Time < 30% SQL Server Total Server Memory < 1.8G Obviously, without AWE enabled, SQL Server can use only less than 2G memory. My Question is: why "SQL Server Total server Memory" is less than 2G?I think SQL Server will use all 2G process address space. Does this counter count anything out? we known that sql server is sufferring lack of memory, but why "buffer hit ratio“ is as high as 96? Any advice is welcomed!

• JBoss 5 on AIX 5.3

  I am a very newbie for AIX and system monitoring. Actually our application currently run production on jboss 5.1 in AIX 5.3. Please check below configuration & system settings. AIX system configuration OS Level 5.3.9.0 (oslevel -g) Physical Memory size 24GB (svmon -G) Page space 4GB (lsps -s) processors 3 cores, Processor Type: PowerPC_POWER6, Processor Clock Speed: 4704 MHz (prtconf | grep Processor) Java version JRE 1.6.0 IBM AIX build pap6460sr10fp1-20120321_01 (SR10 FP1) (java -fullversion) JBoss configuration JBoss 5.1/JBoss ESB 4.11 Hornetq messaging with consumer flow control java opts : -d64 -Xms2g -Xmx4g -XX:MaxPermSize=1024m Sometime we observe very strange behavior in the JBoss that freeze without any error logs. Also server log stop without any further trace. We also not able to get thread dump (kill -3) and its not generate at that point. (kill -3 xxxxx works in normal circumstances) Only option available for us was restart the jboss server and its seem all messages that were in queues during the freeze time process after restarting. We try tweak some of setting in JBoss hornetq, we though issue was there. Hornetq Stuck By Default. But we haven't any luck and also unable to isolate the issue in any point. We looking at tool like nmon for monitoring this but no clue is that good enough to do so. Please provide some point to investigate this issue. Thanks

• How to transfer Windows Vista disk image to new machine

  I'm trying to upgrade a user's machine to some better hardware. I know of Easy Transfer, but I'd rather not have to reinstall all the programs that are already present. (Some of which are no longer available, anyway). Instead, I'm trying to transfer the entire disk image from one machine to the other, but I ran into issues. If I copy the partition image over to the new machine using Clonezilla, I get errors on boot saying that I need to insert the Vista install disk and run repair. I do that, but it then says that it is unable to repair whatever it is that's broken. Next, I tried to sysprep the old machine before creating the image, but sysprep fails saying that it encountered some sort of system error. Should it be possible to sysprep any arbitrary machine, or does it only work on a relatively clean install? Could it be a missing driver that is tripping me up? The new machine is a fairly stock desktop that shouldn't need any special drivers beyond what's already present in standard Vista. Are there any foolproof methods for doing this sort of thing?

• Unable to access my IIS website using hostname. Works fine with localhost

  I am unable to access my IIS website or even the default website. I did a bit of research and checked/selected the option 'Integrate Windows Authentication' in the Properties > Directory Service tab. From then on I could access the website using localhost. But when I use my hostname, it asks for domain username/password. Why is it so? I don't understand why am I not able to access my website without checking this option to integrate windows authentication? My goal is to access the website using both localhost and hostname. More details on what I did: I haven't done anything out of world. What I did is: IIS - Websites - Create new Website - Create a working folder - Set a default page. I restart this website and then click on browse. And I do not see my default page. I had to go to Directory Service tab and select the check box "Integrate Windows Authentication". Then I can see the default page coming. On IE too I can see the default page coming when I use http://localhost. But when I use http://{hostname} it asks for domain username and password. Why???

• 500 error with deploying rails application via apache2+passenger

  I finally completed my own app, so the only work left is deploying the app. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and apache2(installed by apt-get), so I'm trying to deploy through passenger. I installed passenger gem like this: sudo gem install passenger rvmsudo passenger-install-apache2-module and I configured apache settings as what the installation message says. I added below lines in the middle of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file. AllowOverride all # MultiViews must be turned off. Options -MultiViews </Directory> But when I restart the apache service and hit the address, 500 error occurs. At first, it was same 500 error but the 500 error page is from apache's, but when I reinstalled the libapache2-module-passenger, the 500 error page is changed to that from rails'. Because of rails' 500 error page(which is located at public/500.html), I think passenger module is properly connected with apache. What should I do to fix this problem? Do I need to configure something inside my app before deployment?

• Diverting sound output of MCE to SPDIF

  I have an ASUS SupremeFX II audio card (which in fact is an onboard audio riser slot) with the default drivers that are pre-installed by Windows 7 x64 for this card. I am able to manually switch between analog output and SPDIF output by the means of control panel (or external utilities like STADS), a change that affects all applications. The problem is that by doing that every time I am about to launch Windows Media Center, except that it's not that elegant, also makes all other Windows application's sounds to pass through SPDIF too, bypassing analog output completely, blending with what I am watching at Windows Media Center. Is there a way to make SPDIF as the default playback device for Windows Media Center? I know other programs that have a setting like that (foobar2000 for example) working like charm, allowing me to even have different outputs working at the same time (tested with my current card successfully). But when comes to Windows Media Center... it just use what the default playback device is all the time. The only setting that I know of, is under: Settings General Windows Media Center Setup Set Up Your Speakers and what it does is to just change the default playback device for entire system. Please help!
