  Hello, What is the best architecture for storage servers array? Needs... a) easy way to add one more server to array b) we don't have single backup server c) we need to have one backup for each "web" part of each server Group #1 : is cross-server-backuping scheme; the main disadvantage that we can't add one more server, we should add 2 servers in one time.   I have a few dynamic pages and I want to alter certain elements before the page has fully rendered. My snippet is something like document.body.getElementById("change").innerHTML = "<img src..."; I do not have access to change the content server side. Where is the best place to put the snippet to have the code run before the page it has rendered? Rather, is putting the javascript in either the HEAD (inside the window.onload event?) or before the closing BODY(not inside an event listener) optimal?

• Best practices for querying an entire row in a database table? (MySQL / CodeIgniter)

  Sorry for the novice question! I have a table called cities in which I have fields called id, name, xpos, ypos. I'm trying to use the data from each row to set a div's position and name. What I'm wondering is what's the best practice for dynamically querying an unknown amount of rows (I don't know how many cities there might be, I want to pull the information from all of them) and then passing the variables from the model into the view and then setting attributes with it? Right now I've 'hacked' a solution where I run a different function each time which pulls a value using a query ('SELECT id FROM cities;'), then I store that in a global array variable and pass it into view. I do this for each var so I have arrays called: city_idVar, city_nameVar, city_xposVar, city_yposVar then I know that the city_nameVar[0] matches up with city_xposVar[0] etc. Is there a better way?

  I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, but I would like to pick one that can also help me the most in my career. I'm in the US, so it is not necessary for me to learn a second language to influence my career success, however I think knowing one and speaking it fluently could potentially put me in a more interesting career than if I did not. I would like to be able to travel the world, especially if I could have a reason to go one place or another. Which leads me to my question: What is the best second language to learn for a native English speaking programmer? (Especially from the US) Some ideas that come to mind for me are Mandarin, German, Japanese, French... I am looking for experienced opinions though! Thanks.

And most importantly i want to make sure that most mails are not going to end up in users' SPAM list. I'm using PHPMailer in my website What should be the best and affordable approach? If not use Ajax, it maybe much easier, just return View, but if use AJAX, what data structure should return?I just use Json to return the data, but i found each JSON data model return to the client browser, the JS have to use different code to parse it, remove the originally table rows, add the new data rows(because the column is different) etc. It make me crazy, is there any better way to do that?   Hello! I'm diving into iPhone/iPad development and I'm trying to find an elegant mechanism for allowing the user to select dates. It seems to me that a calendar control would be the best way to go, but I don't see one in anywhere in the SDK. All all I see is this overblown, the-price-is-right-looking DatePicker control. Is this the only control that comes with UIKit for allowing the user to select dates? What about the calendar that the Notes app uses? Also, I should note I'm really trying to avoid using 3rd party code frameworks that have little or no documentation, because I'm new to all this and sufficient documentation is a must at this point.   I'm working on a website that will allow users to upload and sell their artwork in different sizes. I was wondering what the best way would be to handle the different file sizes automatically. A few points I was curious on: How to define different size categories (small, medium, large) in such a way that I'll be able to dynamically re-size images with proportional dimensions. Should I store actual jpegs of the different sizes for download? Or would it be easier to generate these different sizes for download on the fly My thumbnails will be somewhat larger than your average thumbnails, should I store a second 'thumbnail image' with the sites watermark overlaying it? Or once again, generate this on the fly? All opinions, advice are greatly appreciated!

  One of most demanding tasks for any programmer, architect is understanding other's code. E.g. I am contractor, hired to rescue some project very quickly. Fix bugs, plan global refactoring and therefore I need most efficient way to understand the code. What is the list of concepts, their priority and best tools for this? Of what I know: reverse code engineering to create object models (creating of diagram per package is not so convenient), create sequence diagrams (the tool connects in debug mode to the system and generates diagrams from runtime). Some visualizing techniques, using some tools to work not just with .java but also with e.g. JPA implementors like Hibernate. Generate diagram for not all the codebase, but add some class and then classes used by it. Is Sparx Enterprise Architect state of the art in reverse engineering or far from that. Any other better tools? Ideally would be that tool makes me understand the code as if I wrote it myself :)

  Hi, I'm new to web programming, so I need some help. I am writing a custom file-creation app for my site. A user visits the page, clicks on some various options and toggles some checkboxes, and the presses a 'download now' link. I have a PHP backend which will be processing the submission, and generating a PDF file. After the user presses the download link, I want the download to start like it would for any static link. My question is: What is the best way to do this? From my limited understanding, I have a choice between using AJAX or somehow using forms to submit the data. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Does anyone have any good links to examples? Thanks

Not really that impressive in the scheme of things, but completely unnecessary and pure, "look-what-I-can-do". • Cross Theaded Calls - Many controls Heavy GUI Application after .net 1.1 2.0 upgrade- best way ??

  I have recently upgraded a .net1.1 solution to .net2.0. AS this is a very heavy GUI appilcation with loads of controls and many multithreaded operations that update the GUI. While these operations worked seamlessly in .net1.1 it is throwing up Cross Threaded Illegal operations after the upgrade. Considering the fact that tehre are numerous grids, buttons and status labels that need to be updated via these multi threaded operations, I decided to code for checking the InvokeRequired solution, however doing that for every control would probably not be the best way to go about it. I was wondering if you could suggest a better way of how I can go about it or propose any OOPS based class structure that I could code around to make the code look better. • What's the best way to manage a multi-user project on github?

  I'm looking to host a new project on github. This project will be worked on by two coders. One of these coders will also be the project manager who will have overall control over the github repo. I've followed the instructions regarding forking a github project at http://help.github.com/forking/. This all works fine and I'm working on the basis that the main repo is controlled by the lead coder, with the secondary coder working on a fork and submitting pull requests to the lead. A problem arises with this, however, when changes are made to the main branch and not pulled by the secondary coder into their fork. The secondary coder could then make changes to their own fork and submit a pull request to the lead, only for their patches to not match up with the main branch. What's the best way to manage this? I've not committed too much time to git/github, so I'm totally up for checking out other hosted solutions if they're better. Simplicity is the key!

  Situation: On my site, I have a comment model, with a deleted field. Users cannot see deleted comments, but I would like to allow admins to see deleted comments, if they choose to. This will be accomplished by having a scope for users with the admin role which allows them to view comments with the deleted field set to false, as well as true. Question: Is Cancan's accessible_by method my best choice for doing so? From what I've read, it sounds like it will facilitate exactly what I'm trying to do, but, I don't want to implement something that is inefficient, if there is a better method.
