• Is the offical Sun Java EE tutorial the best way to learn how to make Java web apps?

  I've been a web developer for almost a decade. I've mostly used classic ASP/JavaScript and I'd like to move into Java based apps. I have a decent understanding of Java itself (enough to know how to lookup what I don't know) and I spent some time doing minor work on a JSF/Spring/Hibernate app, but from what a trusted coworker told me, this application is the example of what not to do. I want to learn the really hardcore stuff (EJBs, HA Clustering, etc), but I know I have to walk before I can run. Is the Sun Tutorial the best place to start? Or is there an definitive book (like K&R for C or Gang of Four for design patterns) that I should buy?

  A client of mine has asked me to integrate a 3rd party API into their Rails app. The only problem is that the API uses SOAP. Ruby has basically dropped SOAP in favor of REST. They provide a Java adapter that apparently works with the Java-Ruby bridge, but we'd like to keep it all in Ruby, if possible. I looked into soap4r, but it seems to have a slightly bad reputation. So what's the best way to integrate SOAP calls into a Rails app?

• What's the best graphics library for node.js for image cropping?

  I'm creating a website using node.js. I have seen many libraries mentioned that piggy back on top of imagemagick etc. There is a list here: https://github.com/ry/node/wiki/modules#graphics What I'm trying to do is take the image that a user uploads, crop it/size it to certain dimensions the site requires. What is the best/most active script to do this? I'd like one with npm support. Does anyone have actual experience using some of these?

  When using a Silverlight-enabled WCF service, where is the best place to instantiate the service and to call the CloseAsync() method? Should you say, instantiate an instance each time you need to make a call to the service, or is it better to just instantiate an instance as a variable of the UserControl that will be making the calls? Then, where is it better to call the CloseAsync method? Should you call it in each of the "someServiceCall_completed" event methods? Or, if created as a variable of the UserControl class, is there a single place to call it? Like a Dispose method, or something equivalent for the UserControl class. Thanks, Jeff

  I have the following tables below City --------- CityID StateID Name Description Reports --------- ReportID HeaderID FooterID Description I’m trying to generate a grid for use in a .Net control (Gridview, Listview…separate issue about which will be the ‘best’ one to use for my purposes) which will assign the reports as the columns and the cities as the rows. Which cities get displayed is based on the state selected, and is easy enough SELECT * FROM CITIES WHERE STATEID=@StateID However, the user is able to select which reports are being generated for each City (Demographics, Sales, Land Area, etc.). Further, the resultant cells (City * Report) is a sub-query on different tables based on the city selected and the report. Ie. Column Sales selected yields SELECT * FROM SALES WHERE CITYID=@CityID I’ve programmed a VERY inelegant solution using multiple queries and brute-forcing the grid to be created (line by line, row by row creation of data elements), but I’m positive there’s got to be a better way of accomplishing this…? Any / all suggestions appreciated here as the brute force approach I’ve gotten is slow and cumbersome…and this will have to be used often by the client, so I’m not sure it’ll be acceptable in it’s current implementation.

  Hi, First of all it is a UI design question! Which is the best design practice for edit data in RIA, for example in Flex or Silverlight? I would like to show customer's details, but there will be an edit window, than the datas of customer will be editable. I would like to show a new form where the data can be edited. What is the simplest way to show this form. I can make my ui tabbed, so I can open the form in a new tab, or I can open the form in a popup/modal dialog (Save-cancel). Maybe I can use in line editing. What is the most user friendly solution in a Silverlight or Flex GUI? What is your opinion? Thanks!

  Ok Ive figured out how to do a screen capture of my desktop using Windows Media Encoder 9 + SDK and saving it as a movie on my hardrive. But now I want to take my project further and stream a realtime screen capture of my desktop . The idea is that users accessing my asp.net website will be able to view whatever Im doing on my desktop in real time via the video streaming from my computer. I really dont need the source code just the best strategy, procedure and server requirements.How will users access the streaming video on my website? Will it work on my godaddy shared hosting account or at what point will I need an upgrade? Will I be saving the stream to a file on the server for users to access or is there a way to stream directly ? I just need someone to point me in the right direction...

• Android: Maps - Best way to provide 'search for location' feature?

  Hello all, I've got an android app that uses a map activity and serves up content based on map location. I'm looking for a way to allow the user to search for a location by name (anything from 'New York' to 'Eiffel Tower') - e.g. have a text input field into which they could type 'Rome' - after pressing a button, the user would be brought to the coordinates of Rome on the map. What would be the best way to go about this? I've looked into the google geocoding api (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/geocoding/), but it has limitations of 2,500 geolocation requests per day - I'm presuming this is per API key? Or is it per user/source IP? 2,500 requests for one android app woudln't last long. Ideally, I would be able to search for English and foreign names of countries. Thanks in advance! r3mo

  When writing a JavaScript animation, you of course make a loop using setInterval (or repeated setTimeout). But what is the best delay to use in the setInterval/setTimeout call(s)? In the jQuery API page for the .animate() function, the user "fbogner" says: Just if anyone is interested: Animations are "rendered" using a setInterval with a time out of 13ms. This is quite fast! Chrome's fastest possible interval is about 10ms. All other browsers "sample" at about 20-30ms. Any idea how jQuery determined to use this specific number?

• Data storage advice needed: Best way to store location + time data?

  I have a project in mind that will require the majority of queries to be keyed off of lat/long as well as date + time. Initially, I was thinking of a standard RDBMS where lat, long, and the datetime field are properly indexed. Then, I began thinking of a document based system where the document was essentially a timestamp and each document has lat/long with in it. Each document could have n objects associated with it. I'm looking for advice on what would be the best type of storage engine for this sort of thing is - which of the above idea would be better or if there is something else completely that is the ideal solution.   We built an app in Zend Framework and have not worked a lot in setting up error reporting and logging. Is there any way we could get some level or error reporting without too much change in the code? Is there a ErrorHandler plugin available? The basic requirement is to log errors that happens within the controller, missing controllers, malformed URLs, etc. I also want to be able to log errors within my controllers. • Which parallel sorting algorithm has the best average case performance?

  Sorting takes O(n log n) in the serial case. If we have O(n) processors we would hope for a linear speedup. O(log n) parallel algorithms exist but they have a very high constant. They also aren't applicable on commodity hardware which doesn't have anywhere near O(n) processors. With p processors, reasonable algorithms should take O(n/p log n/p) time. In the serial case, quick sort has the best runtime complexity on average. A parallel quick sort algorithm is easy to implement (see here and here). However it doesn't perform well since the very first step is to partition the whole collection on a single core. I have found information on many parallel sort algorithms but so far I have not seen anything pointing to a clear winner. I'm looking to sort lists of 1 million to 100 million elements in a JVM language running on 8 to 32 cores.

  I'm about to write a admin panel for my CMS written in CodeIgniter. There will be some user information visible at all time - both in the layout's header section and the sidebar. I'm used to do it in a way that I personally hope and think could be done a lot easier, since I'm tired of sending the same parametres to the view over and over again, when it's dynamic data that needs to be displayed on every page anyways (such as unread messages, username, name, status, etc). I'll need controllers and models, I know that, but do I have to pass, just for an example, the user's username, unread messages etc. every time I need to load a view? Should I do some kind of library for this? Now my question is: How would I do it when it comes to best practice and for making it easy to maintain in the future? I hope my question is understandable :)

• what's the best (most effecient) way in asp .net to return a whole page into tabbed content?

  what i want to do is every time i click on a tab, the content area is replaced by pretty much a whole new page. i don't want a full page load so i want to do it in ajax, but i'm used to sending back small jason data via page methods. i'm not sure how i would construct a whole new page and return that via ajax and i would like to simply assign the whole content returned to a div and be done with it. what's the best way to do this with the least amount of overhead (i know there are some inefficient ways the scriptmanager does ajax)? or is it better to load the tabbed content in an iframe? fyi i'm already using jquery to call lightweight pagemethods on my asp net page and that works great.

• Best practice for C++ audio capture API under Linux?

  I need to create a C++ application with a simple audio recording from microphone functionality. I can't say that there aren't enough audio APIs to do this! Pulse, ALSA, /dev/dsp, OpenAL, etc. My question is what is the current "Best practice" API? Pulse seems supported by most modern distros, but seems almost devoid of documentation. Will OpenAL be supported across different distros, or is it too obscure? Have I missed any? Is there not a simple answer? thanks!

  I have a website which is very large and has a large user-base. I am trying to think of a 'best practice' way to create a back up or mirror website, so if something happens on domain.com, I can quickly point the site to backup.domain.com via 401 redirect. This would give me time to troubleshoot domain.com while everyone is viewing backup.domain.com and not knowing the difference. Is my method the ideal method, or have you enacted better methods to creating a backup site? I don't want to have the site go down and then get yelled at every minute while I'm trying to fix it. Ideally I would just 'flip the switch' and it would redirect the user to a backup. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

• Best way to have unique key over 500M varchar(255) records in mysql/innodb?

  I have url column with unique key over it - but its performance on updates is absolutely atrocious. I suspect that's because the index doesn't all fit in memory. So I was thinking, how about adding a column of md5(url) with 16 bytes of binary data and unique-keying that instead. What would be the best datatype for that? I'd love to be able to just see 32-character hex hash, while mysql would convert it to/from 16 binary bytes and index that, as programs using the database might have some troubles with arbitrary binary data that I'd rather avoid if possible (also I'm a bit afraid that mysql might get some strange ideas about character sets and for example overalocating storage for that by 3:1 because it thinks it might need utf8, how do I avoid that for cure?).

So object's metadata (description, classes, call them like you want :) )could be changed. The database should store objects schemas and instances of these objects. What's the best way to organise a relational database structure to store data mentioned above? Currently I see only two ways: 1) Store objects schemas in a few tables: schema general data,schema properties, possible properties types. Store instances in their tables: instance general data, a few tables - per each type from possible properties types table to store instance properties data. And so on. 2) store objects schemas like in p1 but store instances like XML files in one table: one table for general instance info and one table with instance XML. please, don't ask why/for what I need this. Just need to store custom objects and DB should work fast :)

  I'm implementing user threads on a Linux 2.4 kernel (homework) and my threads are basically just functions running with their own execution context (for example: uthread_create(functionpointer, args)). I'm having a hard time figuring out how to catch the return value and have it ready to be returned when two threads join. I know where to get the value from (eax), but not how to identify that the function actually finished. Given a 'phone number' and a country id (let's say an ISO country code), I would like to convert it into a standard E.164 international format phone number. I am sure I can do it by hand quite easily - but I would not be sure it would work correctly in all situations. Which Java framework/library/utility would you recommend to accomplish this? P.S. The 'phone number' could be anything identifiable by the general public - such as * (510) 786-0404 * 1-800-GOT-MILK * +44-(0)800-7310658 that last one is my favourite - it is how some people write their number in the UK and means that you should either use the +44 or you should use the 0. The E.164 format number should be all numeric, and use the full international country code (e.g.+44)

• Best way to access a sqlite database file in a web service.

  First question from me on stack overflow. I have created a java web application containing a web service using netbeans (I hope a web application were the correct choice). I use the web application as is with no extra frameworks. This web service use a sqlite JDBC driver for accessing a sqlite database file. My problem is that the file path end up incorrect when I try to form the JDBC connection string. Also, the working directory is different when deploying and when running JUnit tests. I read somewhere about including the file as a resource, but examples of this were nowhere to be seen. In any case, what is the best way to open the sqlite database, both when the web service is deployed and when I test it "localy"? I don't know much about web services, I just need it to work, so please, help me with the technicalities.
