  What's the best way to check if the view is visible on the window? I have a CustomView which is part of my SDK and anybody can add CustomView to their layouts. My CustomView is taking some actions when it is visible to the user periodically. So if view becomes invisible to the user then it needs to stop the timer and when it becomes visible again it should restart its course. But unfortunately there is no certain way of checking if my CustomView becomes visible or invisible to the user. There are few things that I can check and listen to: onVisibilityChange //it is for view's visibility change, and is introduced in new API 8 version so has backward compatibility issue onWindowVisibilityChange //but my CustomView can be part of a ViewFlipper's Views so it can pose issues onDetachedFromWindows //this not as useful onWindowFocusChanged //Again my CustomView can be part of ViewFlipper's views. So if anybody has faced this kind of issues please throw some light.

  I'm working with a customer that needs to migrate documents from their current document management system (not Sharepoint) into Sharepoint MOSS 2007 retaining document history and metadata. I've written a proof of concept using the Sharepoint web services and that looks promising, but the snag so far seems to be programmatically setting the created date/time and user. The webservices allow the fields to be set but implicitly override them to be the currently logged in user + date/time. For obvious reasons, I need to be able to keep the original created date/time and user on migration. Does anyone know the best way to approach this problem?

  I'm writing a proxy using .NET and C#. It has a couple of functions that it needs to fulfill. I haven't done much Socket programming, and I am not sure the best way to go about it. Should I use Synchronous Sockets, Asynchronous sockets? Please help! It must... Accept Connections from the client on two different ports, and be able to receive data on both ports at the same time. When a connection is made on a port, it must immediately connect to the server, and start sending data as it receives it from the client to the server. Packets must be forwarded in the order they are received, exactly as they were received. It needs to be as low latency as possible. I don't need the ability for multiple clients to use the proxy, but it would be a nice feature if its easy to implement.

  Last week I interviewed for a position at a TripleA MMORPG game company here in NE. I didn't get the job but one of the areas that came up during the interview was the about the scalability of the code that you write and how it should be considered early on in the design of your architecture and classes. Sadly to say I've never thought very much about the scalability of the .NET code that I've written (I work with single user desktop and mobile applications and our major concerns are usually with device memory and rates of data transmission). I'm interested in learning more about writing code that scales up well so it can handle a wide range of remote users in a client server environment, specifically MMORPGs. Are there any books, web sites, best practices, etc. that could get me started researching this topic?

  I'm trying to convert from a System.Drawing.Color to a Silverlight System.Windows.Media.Color. I'm actually trying to pass this color through a service. The System.Drawing.Color, passed over the wire, does not serialize the argb value independently. I can convert the argb value to a 32-bit int [DataMember] public int MyColor { get { return Color.Red.ToArgb(); } set {} } But I don't see any corresponding method in System.Windows.Media.Color to convert that back. What is the best way to do this?

  In a Silverlight application I have large images which have flow charts on them. I need to handle the clicks on specific hotspots of the image where the flow chart boxes are. Since the flow charts will always be different, the information of where the hotspots has to be dynamic, e.g. in a list of coordinates. I've found article like this one but don't need the detail of e.g. the outline of countries but just simple rectangle and circle areas. I've also found articles where they talk about overlaying an HTML image map over the silverlight application, but it has to be easier than this. • What's the best technology for a medium complexity web application?

  I'm planning to work on a web application of reasonable complexity and am wondering what technology to go with. It will probably start with one person, but there will be 2 or 3 more eventually. My first requirement is to be able to do this as quickly as possible - preferably with as less code as possible. Secondly requirement is that it should be able to scale easily. I have worked with .NET and PHP. So, I am thinking about ASP .NET MVC or CakePHP. It appears to me that CakePHP might be quicker. I did look at Ruby on Rails, but the learning curve is a little steep (which is not an issue if I can be convinced that this is the best tool for the task), I'm not too crazy about the huge number of files generated and I have heard about scalability issues as well as it's applicability to complex situations. I look forward to your opinions on your favorite technology and why.

  Could someone please point me in the right direction. My project involves a database where users enter their address and other info from my website. This database is then referenced in my android application to show the locations of these addresses in my database. I have yet to start and just came up with this idea. My question is, what would be the best method to create a database easily modified through my website (mySQL, php, etc), and also easily referenced easily through Android and the Google Maps API?   Pretty much what you would assume Google does. Advertisers come in and big on keywords, lets say "ipod", "ipod nano", "ipod 60GB", "used ipod", etc. Then we have a query, "I want to buy an ipod nano" or "best place to buy used ipods" what kind of algorithms and systems are used to match those queries to the keyword set. I would imagine that some of those keyword sets are huge, 100k keywords made up of one or more actual words. on top of that queries can be 1-n words as well. Any thoughts, links to wikipedia I can start reading? From what I know already I would use some stemmed hash in disk(CDB?) and a bloom filter to check to see if I should even go to disk.

  I have a Vote domain class from my grails application containing properties like article_id and note I want to HQL query the Vote domain class in order to retrieve the 5 best rated articles having at least 10 votes. I tried : SELECT v.article_id, avg(v.note), count(*) FROM vote v where count(*) >= 10 group by v.article_id order by avg(v.note) desc limit 5; But unfortunately the insertion of where count(*) >= 10 throws an error. • Best way to identify and dispose locked thread in java.

  I have to call a function 3rd party module on a new thread. From what I've seen, the call either completes quickly if everything went well or it just hangs for ever locking up the thread. What's a good way to start the thread and make the call and wait for a few secs and if the thread is still alive, then assuming it's locked up, kill (or stop or abandon) the thread without using any deprecated methods. I have something like this for now, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it and I want to avoid calling Thread.stop() as it's deprecated. I'd like to use the MyFunctionAsync method (and hooking into MyFunctionAsyncCompleted event instead) for async calls instead of Begin/End. What is the best/supported way to handle canceling WCF requests if using MyFunctionAsyncCompleted, and still ensuring that the event doesn't get fired on a page that's no longer loaded (i.e. page navigation within a frame).
