• difference between DataContract attribute and Serializable attribute in .net

  I am trying to create a deep clone of an object using the following method. public static T DeepClone<T>(this T target) { using (MemoryStream stream = new MemoryStream()) { BinaryFormatter formatter = new BinaryFormatter(); formatter.Serialize(stream, target); stream.Position = 0; return (T)formatter.Deserialize(stream); } } This method requires an object which is Serialized i.e. an object of a class who is having an attribute "Serializable" on it. I have a class which is having attribute "DataContract" on it but the method is not working with this attribute. I think "DataContract" is also a type of serializer but maybe different than that of "Serializable". Can anyone please give me the difference between the two? Also please let me know if it is possible to create a deepclone of an object with just 1 attribute which does the work of both "DataContract" and "Serializable" attribute or maybe a different way of creating a deepclone? Please help!

• ASP.NET: How to initialize when *user control* is initially loaded

  I have an ASP.NET user control that I'm embedding in another user control. This works fine. I need to know the best logic/method for detecting when the control is loaded. In other words, I have some display initialization logic that needs to run when the control is initially displayed. Surely there is a pattern for this. The typical method is to put (!IsPostBack) logic in the Page_Load method of the control. This works great until you end up with a state when the Parent page has already posted back many times. My user control gets added to the page but its display does not intialize properly. I'm hoping to find a way that keeps this logic inside the control, versus various hacking around in the codebehind of the parent page.

  Hello I have a mysql database table to store country name and currency symbol - the CHARSET has correctly set to UTF8. This is example data inserted into the table insert into country ( country_name, currency_name, currency_code, currency_symbol) values ('UK','Pounds','GBP','£'); When I look in the database - the pound symbol appears fine - but when I retrieve it from the database and display it on the website - a weird square symbol shows up with a question mark inside instead of the pound symbol.   I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. In a DBAdapter class I created a function so the user can insert info to a table (This all works fine btw). public long insertContact(String name, String code, String location, String comments, int days, int start, int end, String type) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_CODE, code); initialValues.put(KEY_LOCATION, location); initialValues.put(KEY_COMMENTS, comments); initialValues.put(KEY_DAYS, days); initialValues.put(KEY_START, start); initialValues.put(KEY_END, end); initialValues.put(KEY_TYPE, type); return db.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } It would be the Strings inserted into KEY_NAME that I need to populate that String array with. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks so much for the help guys. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? DBAdapter db = new DBAdapter(this); String classes [] = db.getClasses(); edit: I should mention that if I manually define the array: String classes [] = {"test1", "test2", "test3", etc}; It works fine. The error is a NullPointerException Here's the logcat (sorry about the formatting). By "production ready" I mean : supports objective-relational mapping with caching and declarative desciption (like JPA, Hibernate etc..) controls oriented user interface support - no HTML templates but something like JSF (RichFaces, Icefaces) or GWT, Vaadin, ZK component decomposition and dependency injection (like EJB or Spring) unit and integration testing good IDE support clustering, modularity etc (like Terracota, OSGi etc..) there are successful applications written in it by companies like IBM, Oracle etc (I mean real business applications not Twitter) could have commercial support Is it possible at all in Python world ? • Why does my jQuery animation require an extra click in IE8 to finish?

  I am pretty new to jQuery in general, however the following code works perfectly in Chrome and Firefox, but not in IE8. In IE8, I have to click anywhere on the page to start the animation after selecting a radio button.   I have a strange problem when I'm trying to call a simple webservice method from Jquery. Locally it works fine, but on my test-server it does not. The jquery request looks like this (only showing the actual request and not the rest of the method): $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "/Service/Service.asmx/AddTab", data: "tab=" + element.innerHTML, success: function(msg) { alert('success'); } }); When I run this locally from the test-server it works fine, which has me wondering if it could be some setting that I've missed in the IIS. Isn't that wrong? I'm still writing to a static field from an instance method, just via a static method - no?

• How can I get latency info from Android's AudioTrack class?

  I've noticed that the C++ classes underlying the AudioTrack and AudioRecord APIs in Android both have a latency() method that is not exposed via JNI. As far as I can see, the latency() method in AudioRecord still does not take into account the hardware latency (they have a TODO comment for that), but the latency() method in AudioTrack does add in the hardware latency. I absolutely need to get this latency value from AudioTrack. Is there any possible way I can do this? I don't care what kind of crazy hack is needed as long as it doesn't require a rooted phone (the resulting code must still be packaged as an app on the market).

• Getting "Illegal Seek" error after calling accept()

  Well.. it's pretty much that, I seem to be getting a "Illegal Seek" error when checking my errno variable. The problem is that I have no idea of what that can mean. I know sockets are treated like files in unix, but I can't see how can this be related to sockets. What I'm doing exactly is: int sck = ::accept(m_socket, (struct sockaddr*)&client_address, (socklen_t*)&address_len); Then I get sck = -1 and errno = ESPIPE And the weird thing is that it happens randomly. I mean, sometimes the code works fine, and sometimes it just thows an exception. I'm working with threads so that's understandable. But I just would like to know what kind of behaviour makes the accept() call to set errno as ESPIPE so I could check the paramethers for instance. Thanks Nelson R. Pérez

  I follow the technique specified in Roy Osherove's The Art Of Unit Testing book while naming test methods - MethodName_Scenario_Expectation. It suits perfectly well for my 'unit' tests. But,for tests that I write in 'controller' or 'coordinator' class, there isn't necessarily a method which I want to test. For these tests, I generate multiple conditions which make up one scenario and then I verify the expectation. For example, I may set some properties on different instances, generate an event and then verify that my expectations from controller/coordinator is being met.   I'm trying to write a DSL that allows me to do Policy.name do author "Foo" reviewed_by "Bar" end The following code can almost process it: class Policy include Singleton def self.method_missing(name,&block) puts name puts "#{yield}" end def self.author(name) puts name end def self.reviewed_by(name) puts name end end Defining my method as class methods (self.method_name) i can access it using the following syntax: Policy.name do Policy.author "Foo" Policy.reviewed_by "Bar" end If i remove the "self" from the method names, and try to use my desired syntax, then i receive an error "Method not Found" in the Main so it could not find my function until the module Kernel. Its ok, i understand the error. But how can i fix it? How can i fix my class to make it work with my desired syntax that?

• NerdDinner difficulties

  Hello guys, I'm having a problem with the Create method of the NerdDinner tutorial, which is very good BTW. As you can see here http://nerddinnerbook.s3.amazonaws.com/Part5.htm in the Create method, he removed the ID field of the aspx page. I did that too, but I cannot add any dinners because I get a primary key violation. How is NerdDinner controlling the ids of each dinner? I revised the tutorial and could not see any references to identity fields on SQL database. Is there a way how to write it, that the method from outside calling, there's no paramter, but in inside, there's a parameter - for recursion...? The compiler complains that the parameter is not defined when called from outside

• CPU and Data alignment

  Dear All, Pardon me if you feel this has been answered numerous times, but I need answers to the following queries! Why data has to be aligned (on 4 byte/ 8 byte/ 2 byte boundaries)? Here my doubt is when the CPU has address lines Ax Ax-1 Ax-2 ... A2 A1 A0 then it is quite possible to address the memory locations sequentially. So why there is the need to align the data at specific boundaries? How to find the alignment requirements when I am compiling my code and generating the executatble? If for e.g the data alignment is 4 byte boundary, does that mean each consecutive byte is located at modulo 4 offsets? My doubt is if data is 4 byte aligned does that mean that if a byte is at 1004 then the next byte is at 1008 (or at 1005)? Your thoughts are much welcome. Thanks in advance! /MS

  I see there is a :user_ssl option in attachment_fu which checks the amazon_s3.yml file in order to serve files via https:// In the s3_backend.rb you have this method: def self.protocol @protocol ||= s3_config[:use_ssl] ? 'https://' : 'http://' end But this then makes it serve ALL s3 attachments with SSL. I'd like to make it dynamic depending if the current request was made with https:// i.e: if request.ssl? @protocol = "https://" else @protocol = "http://" end How can I make it work in this way? I've tried modifying the method and then get the NameError: undefined local variable or method `request' for Technoweenie::AttachmentFu::Backends::S3Backend:Module error
