    as a new linux user, used Ubuntu 12.10, I tried several tweaks with the SMB shares. I followed this tutorial to mount permanently 4 SMB shares from my local NAS. To resume, I : edit /etc/fstab added a line like : //servername/sharename /media/windowsshare cifs credentials=/home/ubuntuusername/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 created a credentials file for security reasons in my home folder (explained in the tutorial) ~/.smbcredentials It work perfectly, they are automounted on each reboot, but when I logon, I all the time get 4 file explorer open with each share. It is possible to avoid these file explorer window to be opened on every reboot ? I guess it's related to X or via a explicit deny or these graphical mount, but I don't have any clues on how to proceed Thank you for your time,

  • Should I choose 10.04 LTS or 10.10?

    I'm new to Ubuntu (and Linux) but I want to give it a go. I've spent a few evenings trying to get 10.10 to run but I think my nVidia 8400 GS is causing trouble; only recovery mode with failsafeX gets me to the desktop (low-res but seems to be fully functional otherwise). Given that the xx.04 vesions are long-term support, I'm wondering whether it would be smarter for me to use that. I don't need to be on the cutting edge - I prefer to have a system that just works, long-term. Later I hope to move my media center and wife's netbook over too. Question: Why should I (not?) choose the 10.04 LTS version over the newest 10.10 version?

  • DVC101 Video Capture Device on USB hub - Ubuntu Server 12.04

    I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop I use as a media server/video capture system. It only has 2 USB ports and I have a total of 3 devices I need to connect. The DVC101 works perfectly while plugged directly into the USB port in back of the laptop. Unfortunately it does not get recognized when plugged into a passive or powered USB hub. Questions: Is there something I am missing on the Ubuntu side? Something I need to do that will allow the device to be recognized through the hub? If not, will the extra USB ports on a dell laptop dock (port replicator) act the same as the aftermarket hubs? I know this one is off topic of Ubuntu but any input appreciated.

  • Share on Facebook does not show thumbnail images

    I have a PHP application which has a "Share on Facebook" button that, On the development server shows the thumbnail images correctly and allows the user to select between them On the live server, it does NOT show the thumbnail images at all. The relevant portion of the .htaccess file is: # Set up caching on media files for 2 days <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|flv)$"> ExpiresDefault A172800 Header append Cache-Control "public" </FilesMatch> I'm using the exact same set of php files and .htaccess, but the server configuration is different. What could be causing this? Note that the text appears fine. Edit1 We are also doing some URL rewriting related to images in the .htaccess (on both servers): ...     There has been a lot of media attention paid in recent months and years to the increase in CS majors and the possibility of a second tech bubble. Some news reports have suggested that as more people enter CS, the market could be flooded with CS professionals and jobs could be increasingly difficult to find. Is this a bad time to be majoring in computer science? Edit: I'm a non-trad student who allready has a Bachelor's degree in economics and will be pursuing a CS degree starting this upcoming summer semester at the Univ of Kansas. I've been programming for about two/three years and just need a more formal education to fill the holes in my head. I have an interest in CS, it's just that I am worries about the prospects for the future.

    Hi everybody, I have a site that features some pages which do not require any post-back functionality. They simply display static HTML and don't even have any associated code. However, since the Master Page has a <form runat="server"> tag which wraps all ContentPlaceHolders, the resulting HTML always contains the ViewState field, i.e: <input type="hidden" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUKMjEwNDQyMTMxM2Rk0XhpfvawD3g+fsmZqmeRoPnb9kI=" /> I realize, that when decrypted, this string corresponds to the <form> tag which I cannot remove. However, I would still like to remove the ViewState field for pages that only display static HTML. Is it possible?

  • vlc issue with unity

    I'm using ubuntu 12.04 with unity 3d. I am having troubles to lock vlc (version: VLC media player 2.0.1 Twoflower (revision 2.0.1-0-gf432547)) to the left panel. It doesn't behave the same way other applications do. This is a fresh install from the repo, I didn't change any settings. Ubuntu 12.04 is also a fresh install. For example, (left) clicking on it doesn't bring it to front, but creates a new instance (this in particular is very annoying, if it gets behind another window, that happens to be maximized, there is no way to bring it back up). It also doesn't have a right arrow to say the number of instances there is. Any way around that ?

  • "Mail merge"-like functionality in Dreamweaver, or in any other web editing tool?

    I have inherited several related, low-traffic web sites to manage and edit. These sites are implemented with static html, and they've accrued lots of stray tags and other cruft. I want to try to clean these up and migrate them to some common page template framework to simplify design and data changes and improve overall consistency. The pages will change on the timescale of weeks, and since the current web hosting plan does not support any dynamic server technologies, I was hoping to just use Dreamweaver or some other tool to merge my content data with some templating structure. I'd like to do content updates every several days and then run the content back through my templates, resulting in new static html that I can upload to the host. Do any tools support this kind of poor-man's data-driven web application? Are there better ways to approach this problem, aside from moving to a new hosting plan and using ASP.NET or PHP?

  • Windows Phone 8 detected as mass storage

    From version 8 onwards Windows Phone supports MTP (media transfer protocol) to transfer audio and I thought I could use Rhythmbox to upload music onto my device. Thing is Rhythmbox doesn't display the device under Devices pane (there's no Device pane for that matter). I searched other questions here and tried out installing mtp-tools, mtpfs and also tried gMTP, which doesn't seem to detect the device as a portable player. I see that the device's icon looks like a Camera in dash bar and when I see the address location, it shows gphoto2://[usb:002,013]/, which makes me doubt that it's detected as a camera or as a mass storage device. /.gvfs/gphoto2 mount on usb%3A002,003 is where the actual mount is. What do I do to fix this? I tried creating .is_audio_player too.

  • Using Apache Velocity with StringBuilders/CharSequences

    We are using Apache Velocity for dynamic templates. At the moment Velocity has following methods for evaluation/replacing: public static boolean evaluate(Context context, Writer writer, String logTag, Reader reader) public static boolean evaluate(Context context, Writer out, String logTag, String instring) We use these methods by providing StringWriter to write evaluation results. Our incoming data is coming in StringBuilder format so we use StringBuilder.toString and feed it as instring. The problem is that our templates are fairly large (can be megabytes, tens of Ms on rare cases), replacements occur very frequently and each replacement operation triples the amount of required memory (incoming data + StringBuilder.toString() which creates a new copy + outgoing data). I was wondering if there is a way to improve this. E.g. if I could find a way to provide a Reader and Writer on top of same StringBuilder instance that only uses extra memory for in/out differences, would that be a good approach? Has anybody done anything similar and could share any source for such a class? Or maybe there any better solutions to given problem?

  • C# Image.Clone to byte[] causes EDIT.COM to open on Windows XP

    It appears that cloning a Image and converting it to a byte array is causing EDIT.COM to open up on Windows XP machines. This does not happen on a Windows 7 machine. The application is a C# .NET 2.0 application. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening?     As per my understanding a lock is not released until the runtime completes the code block of the lock(obj) ( because when the block completes it calls Monitor.Exit(obj).
