• How to secure images with Rails?

  I have a gallery in my rails app that needs to only allow certain images to be shown to specific, logged in users. I am using Paperclip for image processing now, but it saves all images in a public folder available to anyone. Note that I don't have to use Paperclip if there is a better way, and I already have the login system in place. I just need a way to place the images in a non-public location, but still be able to serve them as needed. Is it possible to only allow these images to be served to authenticated users?

• Web Service returning object with null fields

  Never seen this one before. WebService.Implementation imp = new WebService.Implementation(); WebService.ImplementationRequest req = new WebService.ImplementationRequest(); return imp.GetValue(req); The object that imp returns is not null. It's returning an ImplementationResponse, as expected. But all of the fields in that object are null. Which is not expected. The WebService, currently, just returns some constant dummy data. We've tested this on another developer's machine, works just fine. I suppose I should also note that the WebService should throw an exception if I pass null into the GetValue method. It doesn't. Not for me. Any idea what could be wrong with my environment that could make a WebService return an object, but make every value in that object null? And somehow 'magically' return this mystery object when it should be throwing an exception?

• sqlite3.OperationalError: database is locked - non-threaded application

  Hi, I have a Python application which throws the standard sqlite3.OperationalError: database is locked error. I have looked around the internet and could not find any solution which worked (please note that there is no multiprocesses/threading going on, and as you can see I have tried raising the timeout parameter). The sqlite file is stored on the local hard drive. The following function is one of many which accesses the sqlite database, and runs fine the first time it is called, but throws the above error the second time it is called (it is called as part of a for loop in another function): def update_index(filepath): path = get_setting('Local', 'web') stat = os.stat(filepath) modified = stat.st_mtime index_file = get_setting('Local', 'index') connection = sqlite3.connect(index_file, 30) cursor = connection.cursor() head, tail = os.path.split(filepath) cursor.execute('UPDATE hwlive SET date=? • Richfaces Calendar Minimum and Maximum Dates

  Hello everybody! My problem is making the RichFaces calendar restricting the dates to be allowed to be chosen by the user. Let's say I want to allow only the dates of this month and the dates of the next month to be chosen by the user. I used the preloadDateRangeStart and preloadDateRangeEnd attributes but they did nothing. I created my own CalendarDataModel which uses the preloadDateRangeStart and preloadDateRangeEnd and enables the items but the calendar on the screen allows only the dates of the current month to be selected. Note that the preloadDateRangeStart is today's date and preloadDateRangeEnd is today's date plus 2 months. I am missing something here for sure. Can someone help me please?

• How do you optimize database performance when providing results for autocomplete/iterative search?

  Note: In this question I'm using the term "autocomplete" (or "iterative search") to refer to returning search-as-you-type results, e.g. like Google Search gives you. Also my question is not specific to web applications vs. fat client apps. How are SQL SELECT queries normally constructed to provide decent performance for this type of query, especially over arbitrarily large data sets? In the case where the search will only query based on the first n characters (easiest case) am I still issuing a new SELECT result FROM sometable WHERE entry LIKE... on each keypress. Even with various forms of caching this seems like it might result in poor performance. In cases where you want your search string to return results with prefix matches, substring matches, etc. it's an even more difficult problem. Looking at a case of searching a list of contacts, you might return results that match FirstName + LastName, LastName + FirstName, or any other substring.

• Capturing network traffic on Linux

  Question: I have one Windows laptop, one Linux laptop and a wireless router. Now I want to "investigate" the hotmail/windows live protocol. What I want to do is route network traffic from the windows laptop via ethernet to the linux laptop, capture it on the Linux computer, forward it wirelessly to the router, receive the hotmail response from the router on the linux computer and forward it to the windows computer. How do I do that? In essence, switching the Linux laptop between the Windows laptop and the router, to capture network traffic ? Which program is best for capturing/analysing ? Please note that for whatever reason, packet capturing with winpcap on the windows computer doesn't work...

• Why has Foundation 4 made its grid classes less natural and readable?

  The Background I love responsive CSS grids. I hate Bootstrap's complex class names. I fell in love with Foundations human readable class names. The Problem With Foundation 4, they have changed four columns to large-4 small-4 columns and in my opinion this makes the HTML markup less clear. This style of CSS class names is exactly why I switched from Bootstrap to Foundation. The Question What advantage is gained by Foundation 4's Grid in making this change? It seems that you can have a different grid layout on smaller screens via media queries, but I can't think of a design that would require this. Note: I've been focused on native mobile development and therefore I may be missing out on recent best practices.

I am pretty new to this area and I need recommendation which Source Control should I use to fix my current project. I am developing Web Application which dealing with large number of pictures. Currently, we have over 500,000 pictures (large size picture and several thumbnails). I am using PHP which is not what I concern (since it is just only hundred of script files). • Java FMJ is not cross platfrom ? How can it be fixed ?

  I was trying to use FMJ (for windows/linux/mac). Where JMF was not working for me (so decided to work with FMJ as it is cross platfaorm). • Drupal - Views + node preview woes

  Hey there! I have a few Views on my Drupal 6 site which take care of some of a node's fields. For example, I have a content type called Country, which has a field called Capital. I've excluded this field in the node display, but there is a view that takes the node ID as an argument and displays it in the right column. This is all very pretty and has been working out well for me, but how do I take care of the node preview mode? Since the node isn't saved yet, the Capital field won't have its new value yet. Note: I am ready to do some very dirty hacks to make this work :)

• Why can't I have static public fields in my managed beans?

  I just started using the Netbeans 7.1 beta and it is calling out errors of a type which I have never seen before. Specifically: A managed bean with a public field should not declare any scope other than @Dependent. The fields it is complaining about are public static final. I can understand the restriction on non-static fields, but I can't think of a good reason this would not be allowed for a static field. Unfortunately I use a lot of them since I don't like having constants in my code. I note that even though I get the red dot in the margin in the editor, the maven-driven build still works and GlassFish still runs my application the way I would expect. So what is my denoument on this issue? Am I going to have to move my static fields elsewhere or is there another way of handling this?

Please view your open orders. Any thoughts on why the displayed string does not match the saved string? • Is it inefficient to access a python class member container in a loop statement?

  Hi there. I'm trying to adopt some best practices to keep my python code efficient. I've heard that accessing a member variable inside of a loop can incur a dictionary lookup for every iteration of the loop, so I cache these in local variables to use inside the loop. My question is about the loop statement itself... if I have the following class: class A(object): def init(self) self.myList = [ 'a','b','c', 'd', 'e' ] Does the following code in a member function incur one, or one-per-loop-iteration (5) dictionary lookups? for letter in self.myList: print letter IE, should I adopt the following pattern, if I am concerned about efficiency... localList = self.myList for letter in localList: print letter or is that actually LESS efficient due to the local variable assign? Note, I am aware that early optimization is a dangerous pitfall if I'm concerned about the overall efficiency of code development. Here I am specifically asking about the efficiency of the code, not the coding. Thanks in advance! D

• Aren't passwords written in inputbox vulnerable through a stack trace ?

  Hello, I am not a guru of the stack tracing, at all. I even don't know how to get some. Anyway, I am wondering if entering a password entered in an inputbox is safe. Can't it be retrieved by getting a stack trace ? A password entered that way will be found in many places : Caption property of the TEdit Result of the function which creates the inputbox probably, a variable that stores the Result of the InputBox Command etc... If the answer is "yes, it is a vulnerability", then my world collapses :p. What can be done to avoid that vulnerability hole ? NOTE : The InputBox is an example but it can be with a "homebrewed" login prompt.   I was asked by somebody in an interview for web front end job, to write a function that generates all permutation of a string, such as "abc" (or consider it ['a', 'b', 'c']). so the expected result from the function, when given ['a', 'b', 'c'], is abc acb bac bca cab cba Actually in my past 20 years of career, I have never needed to do something like that, especially when doing front end work for web programming. What are some practical use of this problem nowadays, in web programming, front end or back end, I wonder? As a side note, I kind of feel that expecting a result in 3 minutes might be "either he gets it or he doesn't", especially I was thinking of doing it by a procedural, non-recursive way at first. After the interview, I spent another 10 minutes and thought of how to do it using recursion, but expecting it to be solved within 3 minutes... may not be a good test of how qualified he is, especially for front end work.

• Pyjamas import statements

  I'm starting to use Pyjamas and I'm running into some annoyances. I have to import a lot of stuff to make a script work well. For example, to make a button I need to first from pyjamas.ui.Button import Button and then I can use Button. Note that import pyjamas.ui.Button and then using Button.Button doesn't work (results in errors when you build to JavaScript, at least in 0.7pre1). Does anyone have a better example of a good way to do the import statements in Pyjamas than what the Pyjamas folks have on their site? Doing things their way is possible, but ugly and overly complicated from my perspective, especially when you want to use a dozen or more ui components.

• How can I program ksh93 to use bash autocompletion?

  In a comment in response to a shell question, user tinkertim said that it was easy to hack ksh to use the bash autocompletion library. I would like nothing better than to use bash autocompletion with AT&T ksh93. How can this be done? ksh93 has a new release several times a year, so I am looking for a solution that does not involve modifying the source code. ksh93 can link new C modules dynamically and also is highly programmable (I run a ksh function at every keystroke), so modifying the source should not really be necessary. Note: I am not talking about filename autocompletion, which is easy to do in ksh. I'm talking about all the other yummy autocompletion stuff that bash does, like autocompletion options for nmh commands or autocompleting Mercurial commmands. Stuff like that.

• FFmpeg + iPhone - Interesting (incorrect?) video encoding results

  I'm encoding some video on the iPhone by running the png image data through swscale to get YUV420P data then encoding that frame using the MSMPEG4V1 codec. In the api docs, avcodec_encode_video should return the number of bytes used from the output buffer by that encode operation. There are 234,000 bytes going into the encoder, but the result returned by avcodec_encode_video is simply "4". The result is exactly the same over 24 frames. Something seems fishy here...any insight? Here's a pastebin link to the code: http://pastebin.com/ht94FWva (sorry for the link away from SO, I just didn't want to have the code duplicated in several places) EDIT: Also, I've set up a custom log callback for ffmpeg to use and I have the log level set to "Verbose" (libavutil/log.h), so libavcodec should be logging any goofs to the console, but avcodec is quiet throught he whole operation. (note: I did test to make sure my log callback was working)

• Silverlight caching HTTP POST which results in a 404

  Situation: I am developing a Silverlight-Application which needs Component based on a local HTTP Listener. The HTTP-Listener can't be 'required' to be installed and running when the Application starts, so the Application does the following: Handshake via HTTP POST If Connection failed open a Click-Once Setup to install the component. So far so good.... now the Problem is: If the HTTP POST for the Handshake fails, because the Listener is not running the POST is cached.... and the following Connection Attempts after the Service is running fail, because the HTTP POST is still in Cache after the first try. NOTE: This is NOT a policy-problem. I'm using SL4 PS: I allready tried adding a random parameter to the URL like First try: Second try: didn't work :-(

• How to tell iPhone NSURLConnection to abort

  I have an app that makes moderate use of NSURLConnection. These async calls eventually finish and release properly (it looks like), but sometimes it takes some time for them to finish. So, there are times when I exit the app, (note, not just sending it the background), that some of these connections are still active. If I immediately restart the app, the app freezes on startup. (didFinishLaunchingWithOptions never seems to get called). While I'm not certain these connections are the issue, it would probably be good to terminate or cancel any remaining. Any suggestions on how to do this? Bonus points on how to debug the restart also. (I'm already saving NSLog statements to a downloadable file)
