  You probably already know that Oracle Solaris 11 11/11 was not in fact launched on 11/11/11.  We had our reasons, one of the primary ones being that would have collided with Veterans Day. But I'm going to venture a blog post today--even though it's again of course Veterans Day--to catch up on some news for Oracle Solaris 11's second anniversary (plus two days). Most recently, we had lots to talk about at Oracle OpenWorld -- Markus Flierl gives an excellent recap on his blog. • Seek first to understand, then to be understood

  One of the most important (and most difficult) lessons for a technical professional to learn is to not jump to the solution. Perhaps you’ve done this, or had it happen to you. As the person you’re “listening” to is speaking, your mind is performing a B-Tree lookup on possible solutions, and when the final node of the B-Tree in your mind is reached, you blurt out the “only” solution there is to the problem, whether they are done or not. There are two issues here – both of them fatal if you don’t factor them in. First, your B-Tree may not be complete, or correct. That of course leads to an incorrect response, which blows your credibility. People will not trust you if this happens often. The second danger is that the person may modify their entire problem with a single word or phrase. I once had a client explain a detailed problem to me – and I just KNEW the answer. Then they said at the end “well, that’s what it used to do, anyway. Now it doesn’t do that anymore.” Which of course negated my entire solution – happily I had kept my mouth shut until they finished. So practice listening, rather than waiting for your turn to speak. Let the person finish, let them get the concept out, give them your full attention. They’ll appreciate the courtesy, you’ll look more intelligent, and you both may find the right answer to the problem. • kubuntu 12.04 runs slowly

  i have a 3ghz amd 64 dual core am3 socket processor, asus mom board, 4GB ram, 8800GTS nividia video card with 500MB ram. installed kubuntu 12.04 and very laggy. select menu and 20 seconds later the menu pops up. i switched to classic menu and that seemed to help. what direction should i look first to get this running better? video perhaps? i had ubuntu 11.04 on this machine previously and had no problems with speed.

This is not counting Dell, EMC and HP who have SSD products, but were at PASS for other reasons. This shows that many have aspirations with the hope that market leadership is not yet firmly set. • How can I alias domains to subdomains?

  I have a main site with a bunch of subdomains created. Each subdomain is a blog and I want each blog to have its own domain name i.e. thisguy.com - blog1.mainsite.com thatguy.com - blog2.mainsite.com I bought the new domains and I set up the CNAME records as above to alias them to the appropriate subdomains. However, I get my hosts "a domain is pointing to one of our servers but we don't know anything about it" landing page. How can I set up these domains as aliases of my subdomains?

• Are non-modified FILESTREAM files excluded from DIFFERENTIAL backups?

  Short answer seems to be "yes". I got this from a forum post today, so I thought I'd test it out. Basically, the discussion is whether we can somehow cut down backup sizes for filestream data (assumption is that filestream data isn't modified very frequently). I've seen this a few times now, and often suggestions arises to somehow exclude the filestream data and fo file level backup of those files. But that would more or less leaves us with the problem of the "old" solution: potential inconsistency....(read more)

  I've been using Blender for two days now, and ran into an issue while following a tutorial. Before anything else, I'd like to show you all what my problem precisely is. Here is a short video I uploaded: click here. I thought it may be easier for you all to help me identify and solve my problem more accurately with a visual aid. I would like to emphasize that this issue began to occur after I extruded that trapezoidal region (misstated as a parallelogram in the video). • Acer AO722 flickering screen

  The screen on my Acer Aspire One netbook (AO722) flickers for a few minutes when Ubuntu awakens the screen after a period of inactivity. I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue, as I never see this problem in Windows and both of my Acer netbooks exhibit the same problem. I see the flickering in all recent versions of Ubuntu -- 11.10, 11.04, and 10.10. Surprisingly I haven't been able to find a lot of information about this problem online. I believe the video card in this netbook is Radeon 6290 paired with AMD C-60. I am using the default open source video driver. Would appreciate any tips on how to get rid of the flicker. Thanks!

It promised to be a gamechanger, providing query visibility at a runtime and easily extractable information about heavy iterators in execution plan. So it has been announced but missing. • Time display and Cursor bug in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

  Just installed Ubuntu 14.04. Noticed the time in seconds speeds up then slows down to normal speed. The cursor for the keyboard has a strange rhythm; it stays normal, then slowly speeds up faster and faster till it looks like it's not blinking anymore, then goes back to normal and starts the process again. It almost seems like my whole operating system speeds up then slows down again. Even the hour circle that spins when it's loading starts slowly then it picks up speed till it spins so fast it looks like it's not even spinning. It interferes with video and the whole system. I have a Dell Vostro 3750 dual video cards and dual boot with Windows 7. Windows is running fine.
