  • Do you have a data roadmap?

    I often visit companies where they asked me “What is SQL Server’s Roadmap?” What they mean is that they want to know where Microsoft is going with our database products. I explain that we’re expanding not only the capacities in SQL Server but the capabilities – we’re trying to make an “information platform”, rather than just a data store. But it’s interesting when I ask the same question back. “What is your data roadmap?” Most folks are surprised by the question, thinking only about storage and archival. To them, data is data. Ah, not so. Your data is one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable asset in your organization. And you should be thinking about how you’ll acquire it, how it will be distributed, how you’ll archive it (which includes more than just backing it up) and most importantly, how you’ll leverage it. Because it’s only when data becomes information that it is truly useful. to be sure, the folks on the web that collect lots of data have a strategy for it – do you?   • Don't speak to the DBA while he/she is doing the job?!

    Our DBA was very busy today, he helped out our developers to write efficient code,explained to the programmer how to launch the old DTS package on SQL Server 2005 and etc. You know how it is, someone comes in and asking the question and you answer the question at the same time you are busy to do something. So  today answering one of such questions he deleted by mistake very ctitical database. Fortunately, we had zero data loss,thanks to our backup/recovery strategy. I think that is acceptable to say that you are busy right now ,please ask the question later on, what do you think?   • When you’re on a high, start something big

    Most days are pretty average – we have some highs, some lows, and just regular old work to do. But some days the sun is shining, your co-workers are especially nice, and everything just falls into place. You really *enjoy* what you do. Don’t let that moment pass. All of us have “big” projects that we need to tackle. Things that are going to take a long time, and a lot of money. Those kinds of data projects take a LOT of planning, and many times we put that off just to get to the day’s work. I’ve found that the “high” moments are the perfect time to take on these big projects. I’m more focused, and more importantly, more positive. And as the quote goes, “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.” You’ll find a way to make it happen if you’re in a positive mood. Now – having those “great days” is actually something you can influence, but I’ll save that topic for a future post. The procedure is meant to be the "ultimate" index information procedure, providing lots of information about all indexes in a database or all indexes for a certain table.   • Drivers for GeForce 7300 GS?

    I have been searching EVERYWHERE!!!!! And I cannot seem to find a driver for my GeForce 7300 GS video card. If I don't get it, the Android SDK emulator won't work. I get this error while starting the emulator up: X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString) Serial number of failed request: 12 Current serial number in output stream: 12 I looked up anything and everything, and the results I got was to get a video card driver, which I can not find.   • I have a new file type that I would like to handle in gnome how to get file properties?

    I have a new file type that I would like to handle in gnome. Establishing a new mime type, a new thumbnailer and a new application to display the file type is done. But I need a new tab on the file properties page. This tab is analogous to the tabs for exif information for jpg files or for encoding information for video codecs, that says how long the video is. The files concerned are embroidery files and the file properties needed to be displayed are things like phisical dimentions of the design, how much thread will be used and how many colours. My belief is that with current gnome 3 this is not possible, am I right? Or should I take a wider view that in Ubuntu, anything is possible, just may be a bit difficult?

  • My ubuntu 11.10 gets weird lately

    I have quite a lot problems lately(about 2 weeks) running Ubuntu 11.10. First, flash playback in chrome hangs and lags all the time. While in Firefox is better, but still lags. Playing video files in the preinstalled Movie Player lags too. Second, I've turned automatic on and in some occasions, after I switched the computer on and successfully loaded the desktop, however, in just a minute or so, the screen just got black out and directed me back to the login page. I thinks there are bugs, please tell me how to correct those. Sysinfo: CPU: i5-2400 MB: GA H61M D2P B3 (no video card) Drive: Intel 320 40GB Thanks. p.s. should I upgrade to 12.04??

    I'm running 12.04 Precise Pangolin, Kernel 3.2.0-32 w/ GNOME 3.4.2 I perused the prior questions/answers and did not find exactly the same problem, I am concerned that AUTOFSCK, Grub or some other critical event that needs some attention ? Any idea on how to get my video clean during boot? Once I get past the boot screen the video driver/card, etc is performing beautifully !   • Collision detection problem in XNA

    I'm having two problems with my collision detection in XNA. There are two boxes, the red box represents a player and the blue box represents a wall. The first problem is when the player moves to the upper side or bottom side of the wall and collides with it, and then try to go to the left or right, the player will just jump in the opposite direction as seen in the video. However if I go to the right side or the left side of the wall and try to go up or down the player will smoothly go up or down without jumping. The second problem is that when I collide with the box and my key is still pressed down the blue box goes half way through red box and and goes back out and it keeps doing that until I stop pressing the keyboard. its not very clear on the video but the keeps going in and out really fast until I stop pressing the key.
