  • Restarting an activity in a single tab in a TabActivity?

    - by user291701
Hi, I have a TabActivity. Each tab points to a sub activity. Works great. Is there any clever way to refresh one of the activity tabs? I just want to 'restart' the activity in tab #3 for example. Not sure of a good way to do this other than building in refresh support to the activity itself, or clearing ALL the tabs and recreating all of them. Thanks

  • How to monitor outgoing server activity to detect malware?

    - by ted.strauss
I have a website that has previously been victim of malware. I restored the site from an old backup and have made every effort to lock down the server. I have no way to be absolutely certain that the backup I used is clean, and I'm worried that this malware may re-appear. I would like to use a tool to monitor outgoing port activity to detect signs of malware activity. Unfortunately I'm using a server host that does not give me shell access, so I need to use a tool that can be installed via FTP and used via the browser. My site is Joomla :( so a Joomla extension with this capability would work, but I haven't found that yet. Any suggestions. Many thanks

  • Navigating between activities and tasks

    - by Alex Orlov
The situation: I have an activity "A" that is a delegator activity, in simple words, it's only purpose is to call activity "B" (via startActivityForResult()) depending on data it receives. Activity "B" has launchMode set to "singleTask", so it always runs in a single task. When activity "A" gets started from another task (for example as a share from gallery) it immediately returns ACTION_CANCELLED for activity "B", finishes, and task of activity "B" comes to front (which is an expected behavior). So, what happens, is that we jump from our Gallery app task, to my activity "B" task. Everything is fine until user presses back. Since we are already in a different task, the back button doesn't lead us back to gallery. It navigates in the stack of activity "B" task. The question: is there any way to navigate from one task, to previously shown task (navigate from activity "B" to gallery)? Or maybe there is a way to take currently running activity "B" and move it to another task?

  • how to make the android app load faster?

    - by Tapan Desai
    I have designed an application for android, in which i am showing a splash screen before the main activity is started but the application takes 5-7 seconds to start on low-end devices. I want to reduce that time to as low as possible. I have been trying to reduce the things to be done in onCreate() but now i cannot remove any thing more from that. I am pasting the code that i have used to show the splash and the code from MainActivity. Please help me in reducing the startup time of the application. Splash.java @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); this.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.activity_splash); txtLoad = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.txtLoading); txtLoad.setText("v1.0"); new Thread() { public void run() { try { sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { finish(); Intent intent = new Intent(SplashActivity.this,MainActivity.class); startActivity(intent); } } }.start(); } MainActivity.java @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); this.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); editType1UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType1UserName); editType1Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType1Password); editType2UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType2UserName); editType2Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType2Password); editType3UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType3UserName); editType3Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType3Password); editType4UserName = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType4UserName); editType4Password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextType4Password); mTxtPhoneNo = (AutoCompleteTextView) findViewById(R.id.mmWhoNo); mTxtPhoneNo.setThreshold(1); editText = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editTextMessage); spinner1 = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerGateway); btnsend = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btnSend); btnContact = (Button) findViewById(R.id.btnContact); btnsend.setOnClickListener((OnClickListener) this); btnContact.setOnClickListener((OnClickListener) this); mPeopleList = new ArrayList<Map<String, String>>(); PopulatePeopleList(); mAdapter = new SimpleAdapter(this, mPeopleList, R.layout.custcontview, new String[] { "Name", "Phone", "Type" }, new int[] { R.id.ccontName, R.id.ccontNo, R.id.ccontType }); mTxtPhoneNo.setAdapter(mAdapter); mTxtPhoneNo.setOnItemClickListener((OnItemClickListener) this); readPerson(); Panel panel; topPanel = panel = (Panel) findViewById(R.id.mytopPanel); panel.setOnPanelListener((OnPanelListener) this); panel.setInterpolator(new BounceInterpolator(Type.OUT)); getLoginDetails(); }

  • One intent is working, second is giving me a crash

  • Add button to a layout programmatically

    - by mmmbaileys
I'm having trouble adding a button to a layout that I've created in XML. Here's what I want to achieve: //some class else { startActivity(new Intent(StatisticsScreen.this, ScreenTemperature.class)); } //// //ScreenTemperatureClass @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); //this is where I call another class that //displays a nice graph setContentView(new GraphTemperature(getApplicationContext())); } I want to add a Button to this new screen so that it'll appear below the graph. I've tried creating a LinearLayout view, then create a Button and add it to this view but I just get NullPointerExceptions.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks EDIT#1 Here's what I've tried using that created a NullPointerException and 'force close': Button buybutton; LinearLayout layout; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(new GraphTemperature(getApplicationContext())); layout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.statsviewlayout); Button buyButton = new Button(this); buyButton.setText(R.string.button_back); buyButton.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); layout.addView(buyButton); } And here's the logcat error: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(293): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.weatherapp/com.weatherapp.ScreenTemperature}: java.lang.NullPointerException ERROR/AndroidRuntime(293): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2663) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(293): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2679) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(293): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2300(ActivityThread.java:125) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(293): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:2033) theres abviously more lines to do with this error in logcat, not sure if you want it? EDIT#2 So i tried bhups method: @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); GraphTemperature GT = new GraphTemperature(getApplicationContext()); layout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.statsviewlayout); Button buyButton = new Button(this); buyButton.setText(R.string.button_back); buyButton.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); layout.addView(GT); // line 27 layout.addView(buyButton); setContentView(layout); } This method produced the same logcat error as above, NullPointerException, indicating it was something to do with line no. 27 which is the layout.addView line of code. Any ideas? Thanks again

  • Building KPIs to monitor your business Its not really about the Technology

When I have discussions with people about Business Intelligence, one of the questions the inevitably come up is about building KPIs and how to accomplish that. From a technical level the concept of a KPI is very simple, almost too simple in that it is like the tip of an iceberg floating above the water. The key to that iceberg is not really the tip, but the mass of the iceberg that is hidden beneath the surface upon which the tip sits. The analogy of the iceberg is not meant to indicate that the foundation of the KPI is overly difficult or complex. The disparity in size in meant to indicate that the larger thing that needs to be defined is not the technical tip, but the underlying business definition of what the KPI means. From a technical perspective the KPI consists of primarily the following items: Actual Value This is the actual value data point that is being measured. An example would be something like the amount of sales. Target Value This is the target goal for the KPI. This is a number that can be measured against Actual Value. An example would be $10,000 in monthly sales. Target Indicator Range This is the definition of ranges that define what type of indicator the user will see comparing the Actual Value to the Target Value. Most often this is defined by stoplight, but can be any indicator that is going to show a status in a quick fashion to the user. Typically this would be something like: Red Light = Actual Value more than 5% below target; Yellow Light = Within 5% of target either direction; Green Light = More than 5% higher than Target Value Status\Trend Indicator This is an optional attribute of a KPI that is typically used to show some kind of trend. The vast majority of these indicators are used to show some type of progress against a previous period. As an example, the status indicator might be used to show how the monthly sales compare to last month. With this type of indicator there needs to be not only a definition of what the ranges are for your status indictor, but then also what value the number needs to be compared against. So now we have an idea of what data points a KPI consists of from a technical perspective lets talk a bit about tools. As you can see technically there is not a whole lot to them and the choice of technology is not as important as the definition of the KPIs, which we will get to in a minute. There are many different types of tools in the Microsoft BI stack that you can use to expose your KPI to the business. These include Performance Point, SharePoint, Excel, and SQL Reporting Services. There are pluses and minuses to each technology and the right technology is based a lot on your goals and how you want to deliver the information to the users. Additionally, there are other non-Microsoft tools that can be used to expose KPI indicators to your business users. Regardless of the technology used as your front end, the heavy lifting of KPI is in the business definition of the values and benchmarks for that KPI. The discussion about KPIs is very dependent on the history of an organization and how much they are exposed to the attributes of a KPI. Often times when discussing KPIs with a business contact who has not been exposed to KPIs the discussion tends to also be a session educating the business user about what a KPI is and what goes into the definition of a KPI. The majority of times the business user has an idea of what their actual values are and they have been tracking those numbers for some time, generally in Excel and all manually. So they will know the amount of sales last month along with sales two years ago in the same month. Where the conversation tends to get stuck is when you start discussing what the target value should be. The actual value is answering the What and How much questions. When you are talking about the Target values you are asking the question Is this number good or bad. Typically, the user will know whether or not the value is good or bad, but most of the time they are not able to quantify what is good or bad. Their response is usually something like I just know. Because they have been watching the sales quantity for years now, they can tell you that a 5% decrease in sales this month might actually be a good thing, maybe because the salespeople are all waiting until next month when the new versions come out. It can sometimes be very hard to break the business people of this habit. One of the fears generally is that the status indicator is not subjective. Thus, in the scenario above, the business user is going to be fearful that their boss, just looking at a negative red indicator, is going to haul them out to the woodshed for a bad month. But, on the flip side, if all you are displaying is the amount of sales, only a person with knowledge of last month sales and the target amount for this month would have any idea if $10,000 in sales is good or not. Here is where a key point about KPIs needs to be communicated to both the business user and any user who might be viewing the results of that KPI. The KPI is just one tool that is used to report on business performance. The KPI is meant as a quick indicator of one business statistic. It is not meant to tell the entire story. It does not answer the question Why. Its primary purpose is to objectively and quickly expose an area of the business that might warrant more review. There is always going to be the need to do further analysis on any potential negative or neutral KPI. So, hopefully, once you have convinced your business user to come up with some target numbers and ranges for status indicators, you then need to take the next step and help them answer the Why question. The main question here to ask is, Okay, you see the indicator and you need to discover why the number is what is, where do you go?. The answer is usually a combination of sources. A sales manager might have some of the following items at their disposal (Marketing report showing a decrease in the promotional discounts for the month, Pricing Report showing the reduction of prices of older models, an Inventory Report showing the discontinuation of a particular product line, or a memo showing the ending of a large affiliate partnership. The answers to the question Why are never as simple as a single indicator value. Bring able to quickly get to this information is all about designing how a user accesses the KPIs and then also how easily they can get to the additional information they need. This is where a Dashboard mentality can come in handy. For example, the business user can have a dashboard that shows their KPIs, but also has links to some of the common reports that they run regarding Sales Data. The users boss may have the same KPIs on their dashboard, but instead of links to individual reports they are going to have a link to a status report that was created by the user that pulls together all the data about the KPI in a summary format the users boss can review. So some of the key things to think about when building or evaluating KPIs for your organization: Technology should not be the driving factor KPIs are of little value without some indicator for whether a value is good, bad or neutral. KPIs only give an answer to the Is this number good\bad? question Make sure the ability to drill into the Why of a KPI is close at hand and relevant to the user who is viewing the KPI. The KPI is a key business tool when defined properly to help monitor business performance across the enterprise in an objective and consistent manner. At times it might feel like the process of defining the business aspects of a KPI can sometimes be arduous, the payoff in the end can far outweigh the costs. Some of the benefits of going through this process are a better understanding of the key metrics for an organization and the measure of those metrics and a consistent snapshot of business performance that can be utilized across the organization. And I think that these are benefits to any organization regardless of the technology or the implementation.Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How can I receive CameraActivities result in a DIFFERENT Activity (i.e. not in the launching one)?

    - by steff
Hi, I hope the title says it all: I've got Activity A which fires up the Camera intent via: Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE); startActivityForResult(intent, REQUEST_CAMERA); After the picture is taken I can easily grab the picture in: @Override protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) But I'd like to receive the result in Activity B in which the image can be edited. Right now I'm receiving the result in Activity A and pass it over to Activity B which results in showing the GUI of Activity A for a short while: Intent i = new Intent().setAction("DisplayJPEG"); i.setClass(this, EditImageActivity.class); i.putExtra("IMAGE_URI", uri); startActivityForResult(i, REQUEST_EDIT_IMAGE); Of course, I will need the result from Activity B in Activity A after the image has been edited. But that should work with: setResult(resultCode, data); So there has to be a way to do what I need. Please point me into the right direction. Thanks in advance, steff

  • Does an Intent's extras still get flattened into a Parcel even if the new activity is being started

    - by Neil Traft
I was wondering... So if you start a new activity via an intent, the intent has to be serialized and deserialized because you may have to send the intent to a separate VM instance via IPC. But what if the PackageManager knows that your new activity will be created on the current task? It seems like a reasonably Googly optimization would be not to serialize the intent at all, since it's all happening inside the same VM. But then again, you can't just allow the new activity to use the same instance of each parcelable, because any changes made by the new activity would show up in the old activity and the programmer might not be expecting this. So, is this optimization being done? Or do the extras always get marshalled and unmarshalled, no matter what?

  • Optimal Activity Stack Order for a Main Menu button?

    - by kefs
I'm developing an app that starts with a main menu, and then continues through three different steps (activities) to a final activity where the task is marked complete. On this last activity, i have several additional options (add note, share, etc..) and i also have a return to main menu button. My question is.. how do i stack the activities so that calling finish() on the final activity will return back to the first activity launched? i am currently just starting the new activity via an intent, so pressing back on this screen doesn't return me to home as i would like. Sorry in advance for being so convoluted in my desc

  • How to stop an activity with GL view. Application not responding

    - by David
I have an activity that I want to programmatically stop after some elapsed time. I have a GL view running. My understanding is that the GLSurfaceView.renderer is running in its own thread, so I created a handler instantiated from the activity. In the GLSurfaceView I post a message. The handler then attempts to stop the activity with the following: onStop(); finish(); The activity seems to close. However, if I try to restart the application, I get a blank screen, the phone is practically locked up and eventually I get a message that the activity in the application is not responding. I'm also getting geting a wake lock, ie PowerManager.newWakeLock(...). When I try to release it, I get an exception. Not sure if its the GL view of the wake lock which is causing me troubles. Any ideas appreciated.

  • How do I pass data from a BroadcastReceiver through to an Activity being started?

    - by Tom Hume
I've got an Android application which needs to be woken up sporadically throughout the day. To do this, I'm using the AlarmManager to set up a PendingIntent and have this trigger a BroadcastReceiver. This BroadcastReceiver then starts an Activity to bring the UI to the foreground. All of the above seems to work, in that the Activity launches itself correctly; but I'd like the BroadcastReceiver to notify the Activity that it was started by the alarm (as opposed to being started by the user). To do this I'm trying, from the onReceive() method of the BroadcastReceiver to set a variable in the extras bundle of the intent, thus: Intent i = new Intent(context, MyActivity.class); i.putExtra(wakeupKey, true); i.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); context.startActivity(i); In the onResume() method of my Activity, I then look for the existence of this boolean variable: protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); String wakeupKey = "blah"; if (getIntent()!=null && getIntent().getExtras()!=null) Log.d("app", "onResume at " + System.currentTimeMillis() + ":" + getIntent().getExtras().getBoolean(wakeupKey)); else Log.d("app", "onResume at " + System.currentTimeMillis() + ": null"); } The getIntent().getExtras() call in onResume() always returns null - I don't seem to be able to pass any extras through at all in this bundle. If I use the same method to bind extras to the PendingIntent which triggers the BroadcastReceiver however, the extras come through just fine. Can anyone tell me what's different about passing a bundle from a BroadcastReceiver to an Activity, as opposed to passing the bundle from an Activity to a BroadcastReceiver? I fear I may be doing something very very obvious wrong here...

  • Why does my Workflow Service (4.0) variable go null in a DoWhile Activity?

    - by jlafay
I have a WF service that I'm trying to setup receive activities to "Subscribe" and "Unsubscribe". I'm using This WF Durable Duplex Tutorial as a basis because my service performs callbacks to clients. Basically, think of it as a chat service. I can make client calls to the two receive activities just fine. What happens is the callback address of the client is passed in to Subscribe() on the service. The address is stored as a variable in the WF service and everything looks like it would work as to be expected. When a client calls Unsubscribe(), my watch I have set on the address var during debugging shows it as null. So what gives? Here's the basic setup of my WF service layout... Everything is enveloped in a DoWhile activity. Inside of that is a Pick activity and two Pick branches. The first branch is for subscribing activities. It has a receive-sendreply activity that assigns the string passed by the client to the WF address var. The second branch handles unsubscribing. The trigger is the Request activity and the client address is again passed in. From there it goes into a sequence, starting with an If. It checks to see if the unsubscribeAddress equals the address already subscribed. If it does, then it sets the address to String.Empty and sends a success message back to the client. Why would a variable that's scoped to the enveloping DoWhile activity be implicitly assigned to null? I'm trying to get this to work so I can implement multiple client subscribers from there and work on triggers that invoke callbacks to multiple clients. CONCAT EDIT: I set a breakpoint at the DoWhile level and my var is null once Unsubscribe() is called. When Subscribe() is invoked, the watch shows a value in the var all the way through. Until I Unsubscribe() with a client. Should I be using a While Activity instead?

  • What to do when the programming activity becomes a problem?

    - by gablin
I once saw a program (can't remember which) where it talked about people "experiencing flow" when they are doing something they are passionate about. When "in flow", they tend to lose track of time and surrounding, concentrating only on their activity at hand. This happens a lot for me when I program; most particularly when I face a problem. I refuse to give up until it's solved. This usually leads to hours just rushing by and I forget to eat lunch, dinner gets pushed into far into the evening, and when I finally look at the clock, it's way into the wee-hours of the night and I will only get a few hours of sleep before having to rise early in the morning. (This is not to say that I'm in flow only when facing a problem - but I find it particularly hard to stop programming and step back when there's something I can't solve immediately.) I love programming, but I hate it when it disrupts my normal routines (most importantly eating and sleeping patterns). And sitting still for so many hours, staring a screen, is not healthy. Please, any ideas on how I can get my rampant programming activity under control?

  • Start TabActivity from ListActivity (which is content of parent TabActivity) in Android

    - by barmaleikin
    Hi guys, I have problems with switching between activities. I have two TabActivities (A and B), each of of tab activity has 4 tabs with ListActivity. I am trying to show B activity onListItemClick. Code on click is: Intent intent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(), TabBActivity.class); startActivity(intent); My manifest file is following: <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com" android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0"> <application android:icon="@drawable/app_icon" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="true"> <activity android:name=".SplashScreen" android:label="@string/app_name"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name=".TabAActivity"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="com.TabAActivity" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity android:name=".TabAListActivityA" android:label="AA"/> <activity android:name=".TabAListActivityB" android:label="AB"/> <activity android:name=".TabAListActivityC" android:label="AC"/> <activity android:name=".TabBActivity" android:label="B"/> <activity android:name=".TabAListBctivityA" android:label="BA"/> <activity android:name=".TabAListBctivityB" android:label="BB"/> <activity android:name=".TabAListBctivityC" android:label="BC"/> </application> </manifest> Is my manifest correct or maybe something is wrong with code? I would appreciate any help on this topic.

  • SurfaceView for Camera Preview won't get destroyed when pressing Power-Botton

    - by for3st
I want to implement a camera preview. For that I have a custom View CameraView extends ViewGroup that in the constructor programatically creates an surfaceView. I have the following components (higly simplified for beverity): ScannerFragment.java public View onCreateView(..) { //inflate view and get cameraView } public void onResume() { //open camera -> set rotation -> startPreview (in a thread) -> //set preview callback -> start decoding worker } public void onPause() { // stop decoding worker -> stop Preview -> release camera } CameraView.java extends ViewGroup public void setUpCalledInConstructor(Context context) { //create a surfaceview and add it to this viewgroup -> //get SurfaceHolder and set callback } /* SurfaceHolder.Callback */ public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { camera.setPreviewDisplay(holder); } public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { //NOTHING is done here } public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int w, int h) { camera.getParameters().setPreviewSize(previewSize.width, previewSize.height); } fragment_scanner.xml <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent"> <com.myapp.camera.CameraView android:id="@+id/cameraPreview" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent"/> </RelativeLayout> I think I have set the lifecycle correct (getting resources onResume(), releasing it onPause() roughly said) and the following works just fine: pressing home and returning pressing Taskswitcher and returning rotation But one thing doesn't work and that is when I press the power-button on the device and then return to the camera-preview. The result is: the preview is stuck with the image that was last captured before button was pressed. If I rotate it works fine again, since it will get through the lifecycle. After some research I found out that this is probably due to the fact that surfaceView won't get destroyed when the power-button is pressed, i.e. SurfaceHolder.Callback.surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) won't be called. And in fact when I compare the (very verbose) log output of the home-button-case and the power-button-case it's the same except that 'surfaceDestroyed' won't get called. So far I found no solution whatsoever to work around it. I purposely avoid any resource cleaning code in my surfaceDestroyed(), but this does not help. My idea was to manually destroy the surfaceView like asked in this question but this seems not possible. I also tested other applications with surfaceViews/cameras and they don't seem to have this issue. So I would appreciate any hints or tips on that.
