• ISO 12207 - testing being only validation activity? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How come verification does not include actual testing? ISO norm 12207 states that testing is only validation activity, while all static inspections are verification (that requirement, code.. is complete, correct..). I did found some articles saying its not correct but you know, it is not "official". I would like to understand because there are two different concepts (in books & articles): 1) Verification is all testing except for UAT (because only user can really validate the use). E.g. here OR 2) Verification is everything but testing. All testing is validation. E.g. here Definitions are mostly the same, as Sommerville's: The aim of verification is to check that the software meets its stated functional and non-functional requirements. Validation, however, is a more general process. The aim of validation is to ensure that the software meets the customer’s expectations. It goes beyond simply checking conformance with the specification to demonstrating that the software does what the customer expects it to do It is really bugging me because I tend to agree that functional testing done on a product (SIT) is still verification because I just follow the requirements. But ISO does not agree..

• SQL to XML open data made simple

  The perennial question for people is how to easily generate XML from SQL table content?  The latest CAM Editor release really tackles this head on by providing a powerful and simple toolset.  Firstly you can visually browse your SQL tables and then drag and drop from columns and tables into the XML structure editor.   This gives you a code-free method of describing the transformation you require.  So you do not need to know about the vagaries of XML and XSD schema syntax. Second you can map directly into existing industry domain XML exchange structures in the XML visual editor, again no need to wrestle with XSD schema, you have WYSIWYG visual control over what your output will look like. • ECS with Go - circular imports [migrated]

  I'm exploring both Go and Entity-Component-Systems. I understand how ECS works, and I'm trying to replicate what seems to be the go-to document of ECS, namely http://cowboyprogramming.com/2007/01/05/evolve-your-heirachy/ For performance, the document recommends to use static arrays of every component type. That is, not arrays of component interfaces (arrays of pointers). The problem with this in Go is circular imports. I have one package, ecs, which contains the definitions for Entity, Component and System types/interfaces as well as an EntityManager. Another package, ecs/components, contains the various components. Obviously, the ecs/components package depends on ecs. But, to declare arrays of specific components in EntityManager, ecs would depend on ecs/components, therefore creating a circular import. Is there any way of avoiding this? I am aware that normally a high level system should not depend on lower systems. I'm also want to point out that using an array of pointers is probably fast enough for my purposes, but I'm interested in possible workarounds (for future reference) Thank you for your help!

• How do I decide what type of programmer I want to be?

  I've been working at my current work for some time, and I'm considering a bit of a change of careers. I'm trying to decide what it is exactly that I want to do, and I'm really just not sure. I'm not wanting a solution for my particular case, but what I'd like to know are some generalities of things I can look for. Here are some positions that I'm considering, and what my definitions are (I'm probably calling them something other than what is standard, but hopefully this will do for now). I'm looking for quizzes, articles, explanations, or anything that can help me figure this out. Manager - Managing programmers in some sense, mostly in making sure they are kept working. Coder - A person who is told to make a program do XYZ, and makes it do that. Doesn't have to model anything, or come up with formulas. Algorithm Designer - A person who comes up with a way to make software do something, but doesn't necessarily code that program, at least, not in it's final form. QA - A person who tests code for bugs, preferably with the code in hand. Architect - This person figures out how all of the pieces fit together, is a technical manager of sorts. Maintainer - This person takes someone else's existing code, and makes sure it is fixed when issues arise. Also of some note is figuring out what industry I want to work in.
