• Website Sitemaps and <priority>, is it working?

  Hi, My "Privacy Policy" page is seen more important by Google than other really more important pages on my website. I'm currently creating a script to generate a sitemap, should I bother with the priority? How do you effectively assign priorities to pages? I consider one of my page important but the page have less content than another one less important to my eyes... but maybe Google bot will see it the other way around. If my degree of "importantness" differs from the one of Google, will I get penalized on the ranking for a particular page? Thank you for sharing your black art with us :P

  Plot the function f(x) = 1.5x / x-4 for -10 equal or less than X equal or less than 10. Notice that the function have a vertical asymptote at x = 4. Plot the function by creating two vectors for the domain of x. The first vector (call it x1) with elements from -10 to 3.7, and the second vector (calle it x2) with elements from 4.3 to 10. For each of the X vector create a Y vector (call them y1 and y2) with the corresponding values of Y according to the function. To plot the function make two curves in the same plot (y1 vs. x1 and y2 vs. x2).

  I've noticed that as I progress in my career I my day to day activities require less and less actual hands on development. However, I feel that I need to stay current, both for my own personal desire as well as being able to guide a team to best practices etc. I'm finding it very hard to stay on top of the game because there are so many new frameworks, technologies and patterns coming out. Do I concentrate on a particular aspect or framework? Do I become a generalist or a specialist? What are others doing to maintain a certain level of proficiency and currentness (sic)?

  I've setup this task queue implementation on a site I host for a customer, it has a cron job which runs each morning at 2am "/admin/tasks/queue", this queues up emails to be sent out, "/admin/tasks/email", and uses cursors so as to do the queuing in small chunks. For some reason last night /admin/tasks/queue kept getting run by this code and so sent out my whole quota of emails :/.   I thought of a solution but it runs in O(n^2) time Algo 1: Steps: Its a brute force method Have 2 for loops for i = 1 to i less than array.length -1 for j=i+1 to j less than array.length This way you can get substring of every possible combination from the array Have a palindrome function which checks if a string is palindrome so for every substring (i,j) call this function, if it is a palindrome store it in a string variable If you find next palindrome substring and if it is greater than the current one, replace it with current one. Finally your string variable will have the answer Issues: 1. This algo runs in O(n^2) time. Algo 2: Reverse the string and store it in diferent array Now find the largest matching substring between both the array But this too runs in O(n^2) time Can you guys think of an algo which runs in a better time.   I think this is a relatively straightforward question but I have spent the afternoon looking for an answer and cannot yet find it. So... I have a view with a country column and a number column. I want to make any number less than 10 'other' and then sum the 'other's into one value. For example, AR 10 AT 7 AU 11 BB 2 BE 23 BY 1 CL 2 I used CASE as follows: select country = case when number < 10 then 'Other' else country end, number from ... This replaces the countries values with less than 10 in the number column to other but I can't work out how to sum them. I want to end up with a table/view which looks like this: AR 10 AU 11 BE 23 Other 12 Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, David

• Is it possible to implement any kind of file upload recovery / resumption in a browser?

  The project is a servlet to which people can upload files via, at present, HTTP POST. This is accompanied by Web page(s) providing a front-end to trigger the upload. We have more or less complete control over the servlet, and the Web pages, but don't want to impose any restrictions on the client beyond being a reasonably modern browser with Javascript. No Java applets etc. Files may potentially be large, and a possible use case is mobile devices on less reliable networks. Some people on the project are demanding the ability to resume an upload if the network connection goes down. I don't think this is possible with plain HTTP and Javascript in a browser, but I'd love to be proved wrong. Any suggestions?

  I have used jquery jstree or dynatree using check boxes and found the same logic The thing is that the if for example there is a parent and 4 child. a) i select all the 4 child (parent get auto selected) the 4 child and the parent node id get posted to the controller. b) But if i select less then 4 children (parent get auto selected) only child node ids get posted to the controller. Is there any way even if i select less then 4 children all my selected nodes included the parent get posted to the controller?

  Hi, Our client-server product has the protocol between them as XML over HTTP. Here, the client asks a GET/POST query to the web server and the server responds with XML. The server is written using django. The server has to be on the web because there are many clients across the world using this. The server code uses extensive memoization and also there is very less db queries - most queries dont have any db queries, some of them has max 1. The biggest problem is the speed. Every query takes close to 5 seconds for the reply. The data replied is also very less - in the range of 4-6 Kb. What are the mechanisms to improve speed of the web service? Is this the usual way of writing a client-server? Are there other technologies and are we missing out on it? Thank you K

  I've been suffering from a lot of elbow and forearm pain lately, and apparently it's caused by my arms and elbows constantly pressing against the desk. My doctor says I'm damaging the nerves on my elbow, and if I don't use elbow pads (or spend less time with the computer), it will get worse, and I will be risking permanent damage to the nerves. Since spending less time with the computer was not really an option, I purchased a pair of these: They didn't arrive yet, and I know they will probably make me look like a total idiot (my girlfriend has already started making jokes) when they do, but health comes first. • Windows API calls from assembly while minimizing program size

  I'm trying to write a program in assembly and make the resulting executable as small as possible. Some of what I'm doing requires windows API calls to functions such as WriteProcessMemory. I've had some success with calling these functions, but after compiling and linking, my program comes out in the range of 14-15 KB. (From a source of less than 1 KB) I was hoping for much, much less than that. I'm very new to doing low level things like this so I don't really know what would need to be done to make the program smaller. I understand that the exe format itself takes up quite a bit of space. Can anything be done to minimize that? I should mention that I'm using NASM and GCC but I can easily change if that would help.

• Is being a programmer a younger person's job?

  After you get old, say past 30 or 40. Can you still keep up with the young coders from your company, those fresh out of school, who can code for 15+ hours on 10 cans of redbulls (most people in Google, Facebook, etc) ? And given the lightning speed with which today's programming frameworks and architectures evolve, can you keep up with the most up to date stuff and be as proficient at them as the next college grad? I know for jobs like unix/c/embedded programming, it might be that the older the better. But for programming jobs in say web development, social media, search engine technology, etc. Do you become less and less competitive career-wise versus youngsters? For example, most coders in Google and Facebook, I believe are under 25 years old. In other words, once you reach a certain age, would it be unwise to continue to be a coder, and is it better to try becoming a project manager or architect?

  I am currently doing unit testing, and use folders to organize my test cases. All cases pertaining to managing of user accounts, for example, go under \tests\accounts. Over time, there are more test cases, and I begin to seperate the cases by types, such as \tests\accounts\create, \tests\account\update and etc. However, one annoying problem is I have to specify the path to a set of common includes. I have to use includes like this: include_once ("../../../../autoload.php"); include_once ("../../../../init.php"); A test case in tests\accounts\ would require change to the include (one less directory level down). Is there anyway to have them somehow locating my two common includes? I understand I could set include paths within my PHP's configurations, or use server environment variables, but I would like to avoid such solutions as they make the application less portable and coupled with another layer which the programmer can't control (some web-host doesn't allow configuration of PHP's configuration settings, for example)

• What the performance of Festival TTS vs FreeTTS on windows platforms?

  9 hours ago I had the wonderful idea to build up from scratch Festival TTS on Windows. In the meanwhile, and in less than 30 minutes, I build up the same source code on Linux, but only because tons of development tools were already installed :D Also this morning I downloaded FreeTTS. I started a simple testing project in less of 10 minutes, thanks to the Java power :D. Unfortunately FreeTTS does not provide immediate support for international mbrola languages, so this morning I thinked "it needs too much work"... Backing to Festival TTS on Windows, after many obstacles, and tons of wrong downloads, CYGWIN before, then "make" and other exotic C++ tools "forgotten" in the installation of CYGWIN, then Visual Studio 2008, then Windows Platform SDK 2008, but it lacks of System.h, so just now I am downloading Windows Server Platform SDK 2003, etc... So now, as I am yet here without having compiled a single line of damned C-- code, my question is: at least Festival TTS is a good choice on Windows for Java development?

• Get notified/receive explicit intents when an activity starts

  Hi, I am developing an application than gets notified when an activity chosen by a user is started. For this to work, the best approach would be to register a broadcastreceiver for ACTION_MAIN explicit intents, which as far as I know doesn't work (because these intents have specific targets). Another, probably less efficient approach, is to use the system ActivityManager and poll on the getRunningTask() which returns a list of all running tasks at the moment. The polling can be done by a background service. By monitoring the changes in this list, I can see whether an activity is running or not, so that my application can get notified. The downside is ofcourse the polling. I have not tried this yet, but I think that this last approach will probably work. Does anyone know of a better approach(es) or suggestions which are less intensive?

"10" < "1a" => 10 less than 1 expecting false "1a" < "2" => 1 less than 2 expecting true "10" > "2" => 10 greater than 2 expecting true But in the case of "10" < "1a" php returns true. I am not understanding the concept please help me to clarify it. Edit: But when I add "10" + "1a" it returns 11 that means php interprets "10" as 10 and "1a" as 1. Is that correct?

• Google Calendar API DoS prevention

  Hi, It appears that the Google calendar API effectively locks you out if you create and delete a few (less than 10) calendars within a short space of time. This has made it basically impossible for me to test my app, because it creates/deletes a calendar for each user that is added/removed from the app. Currently, I'm "working around" this issue by creating a new Google account each time I get locked out of the Calendar API.   I'm looking for a very simple algorithm for computing the polygon intersection/clipping. That is, given polygons P, Q, I wish to find polygon T which is contained in P and in Q, and I wish T to be maximal among all possible polygons. I don't mind the run time (I have a few very small polygons), I can also afford getting an approximation of the polygons' intersection (that is, a polygon with less points, but which is still contained in the polygons' intersection). But it is really important for me that the algorithm will be simple (cheaper testing) and preferably short (less code). edit: please note, I wish to obtain a polygon which represent the intersection. I don't need only a boolean answer to the question of whether the two polygons intersect.

  For my new web app, I'm debating on using multiple views, or conditionals within views. An example scenario would be showing different info to users who are authenticated vs non-authenticated. This could be handled a couple ways. In the controller, check IsAuthenticated and return a view based on that In the view, check IsAuthenticated and show blocks of info based on that Pros of multiple views: Smaller, less complicated view - next to no logic in the view Pros of single views: less view files to maintain The obvious cons are the opposites of the pros: more files to maintain or more complicated view files. Which do you prefer? Why? Any pros/cons I haven't outlined here? Update: Assume each view uses a layout page and partial views to abstract the obviously repetitive code.
