• JavaOne User Group Sunday

  Before any "official" sessions of JavaOne 2012, the Java community was already sizzling. User Group Sunday was a great success, with several sessions offered by Java community members for anyone wanting to attend. Sessions were both about Java and best practices for running a JUG. Technical sessions included "Autoscaling Web Java Applications: Handle Peak Traffic with Zero Downtime and Minimized Cost,"  "Using Java with HTML5 and CSS3," and "Gooey and Sticky Bits: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Java." Several sessions were about how to start and run a JUG, like "Getting Speakers, Finding Sponsors, Planning Events: A Day in the Life of a JUG" and "JCP and OpenJDK: Using the JUGs’ “Adopt” Programs in Your Group." Badr ElHouari and Faiçal Boutaounte presented the session "Why Communities Are Important and How to Start One." They used the example of the Morocco JUG, which they started. Before the JUG, there was no "Java community," they explained. They shared their best practices, including: have fun, enjoy what you are doing get a free venue to have regular meetings, a University is a good choice run a conference, it gives you visibility and brings in new members students are a great way to grow a JUG Badr was proud to mention JMaghreb, a first-time conference that the Morocco JUG is hosting in November. They have secured sponsors and international speakers, and are able to offer a free conference for Java developers in North Africa. The session also included a free-flowing discussion about recruiters (OK to come to meetings, but not to dominate them), giving out email addresses (NEVER do without permission), no-show rates (50% for free events) and the importance of good content (good speakers really help!). Trisha Gee, member of the London Java Community (LJC) was one of the presenters for the session "Benefits of Open Source." She explained how open sourcing the LMAX Disruptor (a high performance inter-thread messaging library) gave her company LMAX several benefits, including more users, more really good quality new hires, and more access to 3rd party companies. Being open source raised the visibility of the company and the product, which was good in many ways. "We hired six really good coders in three months," Gee said. They also got community contributors for their code and more cred with technologists. "We had been unsuccessful at getting access to executives from other companies in the high-performance space. But once we were open source, the techies at the company had heard of us, knew our code was good, and that opened lots of doors for us." So, instead of "giving away the secret sauce," by going open source, LMAX gained many benefits. "It was a great day," said Bruno Souza, AKA The Brazilian Java Man, "the sessions were well attended and there was lots of good interaction." Sizzle and steak!

• Nant build fails - but only in TeamCity

  Hi I have a nant build file set up which works fine from the cmd line but not in TeamCity. I've checked that the comand I execute is run from the same directory TC is working in and checked all the references but it still fails with the following error: [build] Compile the project using Debug configuration...   I have a collection view item and its prototype view. Within that prototype view I have a little x button. I want that button to remove the exact collection view item that it is on top of. I can remove a selected item if I click on the space around the x button but if I go straight to clicking the button before clicking the item it will only erase the last selected item. ideas?

• Associate an Activity with an item in XML ListViews in Android

  I have a ListView that is populated using an XML file. However, I want each item, when clicked, to start a new Activity related to that item. I understand how to use OnItemClick to start a Toast that shows the selected item's text. However, since the ListView is populated from an XML there is not a specific Id for each item in the list. So, how would I associate an Activity with each item in the ListView when the items do not have Ids?

  I'm trying to figure out hot to create ItemsControl which contains Button near each Item, clicking on it removes this item from ItemsControl. I'm new to Silverlight|WPF is it possible to create this using just ControlTemplate? I tried to create inherited ListBox with ControlTemplate that renders button near each item and then i was supposed to hook to click event get item and remove it, but I neither found a way to render button near each item, neither how to subscribe to events from ControlTemplate ;-)

• How To Run MSBuild scripts in .wixproj?

  Im trying to learn to make a web installer using Windows Installer XML (WIX 3.5). I found this blog about using msbuild in .wixproj files to avoid the scenario where the installer ends up dropping the web project assemblies right in the root of the app instead of keeping them in the bin folder like they're supposed to be. According to the instruction after adding the MSBuild script: "When that target runs, you'll see a .wxs file pop out in the .wixproj project folder. Add the generated .wxs to your .wixproj project so it knows to include it in the build." I really don7t know what this means. How can I run the target? I tried to build it but there was no .wxs file generated in the .wixproj folder. Am I missing something? Please help...

• How can I create a dynamic LINQ query in C# with possible multiple group by clauses?

  I have been a programmer for some years now but I am a newcomer to LINQ and C# so forgive me if my question sounds particularly stupid. I hope someone may be able to point me in the right direction. My task is to come up with the ability to form a dynamic multiple group by linq query within a c# script using a generic list as a source. For example, say I have a list containing multiple items with the following structure: FieldChar1 - character FieldChar2 - character FieldChar3 - character FieldNum1 - numeric FieldNum2 - numeric In a nutshell I want to be able to create a LINQ query that will sum FieldNum1 and FieldNum2 grouped by any one, two or all three of the FieldChar fields that will be decided at runtime depending on the users requirements as well as selecting the FieldChar fields in the same query. I have the dynamic.cs in my project which icludes a GroupByMany extension method but I have to admit I am really not sure how to put these to use. I am able to get the desired results if I use a query with hard-wired group by requests but not dynamically. Apologies for any erroneous nomenclature, I am new to this language but any advice would be most welcome. Many thanks Alex

• Internet Explorer: Flash 1 item remaining- Movie Not Loaded

  A couple of days ago I started having an issue where if Id go to Youtube.com to look at a Flash movie, Id get to see only a black screen in the movie area. A right click on the movie and Id see Movie not loaded. In addition, the browser status bar reports 1 item remaining basically meaning, Im waiting for this movie to load. Of course, this never goes away. Heres how I fixed it: In Internet Explorer, choose Tools / Internet Options. I am a journeyman software craftsman, currenlty living and working in Brisbane Australia. In April I am going to travel to the US to attend Alt.Net Seattle and Seattle codecamp. In between the two conferences I have five days in which I would like to undertake a craftsmanship mini-apprenticeship, pairing and skill sharing with your company. I think at first everyone glassed over since very few of us spend a lot of time with Integration Architecture and most of us live more in the application architecture space.  Learning about subject like BPEL and BPMN was refreshing.
