• How to use AutoLayout to position UIButtons in horizontal lines?

  I need to create a couple of UIButtons programmatically in my app (iOS 6.0 and above). Each button should have the optimal width to display button label text (of various lenghts). I want to display the buttons in a "wrap around" style: Starting from the left edge, each button should be positioned next to each other horizontally (in a defined order), and if a button does not fit in the current "line", it should start a new line on the left edge below the previous line. I could manually calculate the frame of each button in my code, but should I use AutoLayout (with programmatically creates NSLayoutConstraints) instead? How exactly would I need to set it up?

  I want to count how many members of an iterable meet a given condition. I'd like to do it in a way that is clear and simple and preferably reasonably optimal. My current best ideas are: sum(meets_condition(x) for x in my_list) and len([x for x in my_list if meets_condition(x)]) The first one being iterator based is presumably faster for big lists. And it's the same form as you'd use for testing any and all. However it depends on the fact that int(True) == 1, which is somewhat ugly. The second one seems easier to read to me, but it is different from the any and all forms. Does anyone have any better suggestions? is there a library function somewhere that I am missing?

  Hello Everyone, I am trying to implement a low pass filter in Java. My requirement is very simple,I have to eliminate signals beyond a particular frequency (Single dimension). Looks like Butterworth filter would suit my need. Now the important thing is that CPU time should be as low as possible. There would be close to a million sample the filter would have to process and our users don't like waiting too long.   assume that i start coding an application from scratch, is the best way to create tables when using an ORM (doctrine), to manually create tables in mysql and then generate models from the tables, or is it the other way around, that is to create the models in php and then generate tables from models? and if i already have a database, will the models created be optimal? cause i have heard some say that its best to create the database from scratch when using ORM, so that the relations are optimized for OOD. share your thoughts!

  Consider the following problem: A multi-line string $junk contains some lines which are encoded in UTF-8 and some in ISO-8859-1. I don't know a priori which lines are in which encoding, so heuristics will be needed. I want to turn $junk into pure UTF-8 with proper re-encoding of the ISO-8859-1 lines. Also, in the event of errors in the processing I want to provide a "best effort result" rather than throwing an error. • Dynamic proxies to auto-save models

  I'm trying to make some auto-magic happen in java using proxies to track objects and saving them when a set* method is called. I started of using java's built in Proxy, and everything works just fine, but from what I can understand I need a interface for every model, which is something that I'm trying to avoid. This is where CGLIB comes in, it allows me to create proxies of my models without the use of interfaces. BUT, how can I now retrieve the original object, the one I am trying to save? The optimal solution to be would be something like the EntityManager interface used by hibernate, where you keep your original object, but it is still tracked.

• Is there a way to optimise finding text items on a page (not regex)

  After seeing several threads rubbishing the regexp method of finding a term to match within an HTML document, I've used the Simple HTML DOM PHP parser (http://simplehtmldom.sourceforge.net/) to get the bits of text I'm after, but I want to know if my code is optimal. It feels like I'm looping too many times. • Call external library from PHP. What is faster: exec or extension?

  Hi, I need to make calls from webpage to external library written in C++ and display the result. Platform is Linux, Apache, PHP. My current idea is to use PHP service which will call my library/program. I found that there are two possible ways to do this: 1) use PHP 'exec' function 2) write PHP extension I am curious what works more effective? Faster? Less load the server? I will probably need to do 4 calls per second, so I want to be as optimal as possible. P.S.   I'm still investigating issues I have with GC tuning (see prior question), which involves lots of reading and experimentation. Sun Java5+ JVMs attempt to automatically select the optimal GC strategy and parameters based on their environment, which is great, but I can't figure out how to query the running JVM to find out what those parameters are. Ideally, I'd like to see what values of the various GC-related -XX options are being used, as selected automatically by the VM. If I had that, I could have a baseline to begin tweaking. Anyone know to recover these values from a running VM?

  My wish is to know how I can program a mobile website, that fit to all mobile phones. Are there any special approaches to recognize a device and render the code according to it? Which tools and coding languages are required? My first thought was to hold the website in XML, which would be parsed depending on the device. You have to consider old phones, even devices with only wap support. For example: The mobile website has to recognize Nokia N75 and render/send the code that looks optimal for this device. Same thing with an iPhone or a Motorola Razr.

• How to design a database schema for storing text in multiple languages?

  We have a PostgreSQL database. And we have several tables which need to keep certain data in several languages (the list of possible languages is thankfully system-wide defined). For example lets start with: create table blah (id serial, foo text, bar text); Now, let's make it multilingual. How about: create table blah (id serial, foo_en text, foo_de text, foo_jp text, bar_en text, bar_de text, bar_jp text); That would be good for full-text search in Postgres. Just add a tsvector column for each language. But is it optimal? Maybe we should use another table to keep the translations? Like: create table texts (id serial, colspec text, obj_id int, language text, data text); Maybe, just maybe, we should use something else - something out of the SQL world? Any help is appreciated.

• Java concurrency - Should block or yield?

  Hi, I have multiple threads each one with its own private concurrent queue and all they do is run an infinite loop retrieving messages from it. It could happen that one of the queues doesn't receive messages for a period of time (maybe a couple seconds), and also they could come in big bursts and fast processing is necessary. I would like to know what would be the most appropriate to do in the first case: use a blocking queue and block the thread until I have more input or do a Thread.yield()? I want to have as much CPU resources available as possible at a given time, as the number of concurrent threads may increase with time, but also I don't want the message processing to fall behind, as there is no guarantee of when the thread will be reescheduled for execution when doing a yield(). I know that hardware, operating system and other factors play an important role here, but setting that aside and looking at it from a Java (JVM?) point of view, what would be the most optimal?

  I want to build a system on the website, that allows users to do some things depend on their rating. For example I have rule for rating value X: 1 post in 3 days 10 comments in 1 day 20 votes in 2 days for rating value Y, rule may be following: 3 post in 1 day 50 comments in 1 day 30 votes in 1 day Each night I recalculate users' ratings, so I know what each user is able to do. Possibilities don't sum or reset on each rating's recalculation. One more important thing is that admin can fill concrete user's possibilities at any time. What is optimal database (MySQL) structure for desired? I can count what concrete user has done: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM posts WHERE UserID=XXX AND DateOfPost >= 'YYY' SELECT COUNT(*) FROM comments WHERE UserID=XXX AND CommentOfPost >= 'YYY' But how can I do admin filling possibilities in this case?

  Hi there. I have a project, where I have posts for example. The task is next: I must show to user his last posts visit. This is my solution: every time user visits new (for him) topic, I create a new record in table visits. Table visits has next structure: id, user_id, post_id, last_visit. Now my tables visits has ~14,000,000 records and its still growing every day.. May be my solution isnt optimal and exists another way how to store users visits? Its important to save every visit as standalone record, because I also have feature to select and use users visits. And I cant purge this table, because data could be needed later month, year. How I could optimize this situation?

• Where can I find a compact programming keyboard with logical key placement?

  I recently, at the order of my chiropractor, bought a laptop stand to elevate my screen. A result of this is that I need a standalone keyboard. Normal keyboards have numeric keypads on the right side, which moves my mouse further to the right... not an optimal position chiropractically speaking. I don't use the numeric keypad, but all the compact keyboards I can find use some random placement algorithm on the arrow, page up/down, and most importantly -- the insert,delete,home and end keys. Those misplaced keys are crippling my code entry. Does anyone know of a keyboard that is minus the keypad, but places those VERY IMPORTANT keys in a more standard position?

  I'm making an online quiz with php and mysql and need a bit of help deciding how to design the database for optimal insert of questions/answers and to select questions for the quiz. The table will hold 80 questions each with 4 possible options plus the correct answer. When retrieving the questions and options from the database I will randomly select 25 questions and their options. Is it better to make a single column for all questions, options, and correct answers? For example: ID | Q | OPT1 | OPT2 | OPT3 | OPT4 | ANS Or would it be better to make a column for each individual question, option, and correct answer? • Which MySQL Datatype to use for storing boolean values from/to PHP?

  Since MySQL doesn't seem to have any 'boolean' datatype, which datatype do you 'abuse' for storing true/false information in MySQL? Especially in the context of writing and reading from/to a PHP-Script. Over time I have used and seen several approaches: tinyint, varchar fields containing the values 0/1, varchar fields containing the strings '0'/'1' or 'true'/'false' and finally enum Fields containing the two options 'true'/'false'. None of the above seems optimal, I tend to prefer the tinyint 0/1 variant, since automatic type conversion in PHP gives me boolean values rather simply. So which datatype do you use, is there a type designed for boolean values which I have overlooked? Do you see any advantages/disadvantages by using one type or another?

• Faster way of initializing arrays in Delphi

  I'm trying to squeeze every bit of performance in my Delphi application and now I came to a procedure which works with dynamic arrays. The slowest line in it is SetLength(Result, Len); which is used to initialize the dynamic array. When I look at the code for the SetLength procedure I see that it is far from optimal. The call sequence is as follows: _DynArraySetLength - DynArraySetLength DynArraySetLength gets the array length (which is zero for initialization) and then uses ReallocMem which is also unnecessary for initilization. I was doing SetLength to initialize dynamic array all the time. Maybe I'm missing something? Is there a faster way to do this?

  Please lead me in the right direction. I need to provide user with small text centered on the iPhone screen. User can make quick scroll left or right in order to get the next or previous text. There can be hundreds of such text pieces. The process itself is similar to Photo application sidescrolling but much simple, no zoom. As far as I can understand I need to use UIScrollView class, then call hundreds of addSubviews? Is it the optimal way or I should always keep 3 subviews and replace them on the fly? What kind of tricks should be used to achieve the "scroll and center" effect? Thanks

• Java Web Application

  I am interested in creating a simple web application that will take in user input, convert it to an XML file and send the file to a database. Coding wise I feel I am okay, it is just the general setup and what implementation to use I am a bit unsure of. At the moment I have a JSP page containing a form, the user fills out the form and on submit a get method is sent to a servlet, in the servlet doGet() method the servlet is instantiating a java object and passing it the user inputted data. The java object then writes that data to an XML file and sends it to the database via REST. All I would be interested to know is if this the standard/optimal way of creating such a web application. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks

• SSIS code smell – Unused columns in the dataflow

  A code smell is defined on Wikipedia as being a “symptom in the source code of a program that possibly indicates a deeper problem”. It’s a term commonly used by our code-writing brethren to describe sub-optimal code but I think the term can be applied equally well to SSIS packages too as I shall now explain One of my pet hates about SSIS development is packages that throw warnings of the form: The output column "ColumnName" (1358) on output "OLE DB Source Output" (1289) and component "OLE_SRC Name" (1279) is not subsequently used in the Data Flow task. Removing this unused output column can increase Data Flow task performance.  The warning is fairly self-explanatory – any column that appears in the data flow but doesn’t get used will throw this warning when the data flow is executed. Its not the negligible performance degradation that they cause that bothers me though, it’s the clutter that they cause in your log file/table. Take a look at the following screenshot if you don’t believe me: There are 231409 such warnings in the system that I took this screenshot from, that is 231409 log records that should not be there. The most infuriating thing about this warning is that it is so easily avoidable; eliminating such columns is a very quick and easy thing to do in the SSIS Designer. The only problem I see is that the warnings don’t occur until you execute the package – it would be preferable for the designer to have an unobtrusive way of informing you of them as well. Anyway, I digress… I consider such warnings to be a code smell because, to me, they’re symptomatic of a lack of due care and attention; a lack of developer discipline if you will. What other code smells can you think of when building SSIS packages?
