  Hi people, I'm in final year of my degree and it is required that i do a final year project. I have decided to do something on adaptive websites that implements customisation, personalisation and basically adaptation via heat maps and weblogs. So for a prototype i would be designing a website for tertairy level students and see if these technologies improve the usbability of the site. i would model it after my school's website. So here's the question, What would be a better language to use.. i have some knowledge in struts 2 framework and some knowledge in php. could say a newbie at both.. so i was wondering what would be the easier and faster way to go. php or the struts2 framework? thanks.

• What is the Simplest Possible Payment Gateway to Implement? (using Django)

  I'm developing a web application that will require users to either make one time deposits of money into their account, or allow users to sign up for recurring billing each month for a certain amount of money. I've been looking at various payment gateways, but most (if not all) of them seem complex and difficult to get working. I also see no real active Django projects which offer simple views for making payments. Ideally, I'd like to use something like Amazon FPS, so that I can see online transaction logs, refund money, etc., but I'm open to other things. I just want the EASIEST possible payment gateway to integrate with my site. I'm not looking for anything fancy, whatever does the job, and requires < 10 hours to get working from start to finish would be perfect. I'll give answer points to whoever can point out a good one. • best method of turning millions of x,y,z positions of particles into visualisation

  I'm interested in different algorithms people use to visualise millions of particles in a box. I know you can use Cloud-In-Cell, adaptive mesh, Kernel smoothing, nearest grid point methods etc to reduce the load in memory but there is very little documentation on how to do these things online. i.e. I have array with: x,y,z 1,2,3 4,5,6 6,7,8 xi,yi,zi for i = 100 million for example. I don't want a package like Mayavi/Paraview to do it, I want to code this myself then load the decomposed matrix into Mayavi (rather than on-the-fly rendering) My poor 8Gb Macbook explodes if I try and use the particle positions. Any tutorials would be appreciated.

  I have the following database structure : [Order] OrderId Total [Payment] OrderId Amount Every Order can have X payment rows. I want to get only the list of orders where the sum of all the payments are < than the order Total. I have the following SQL but I will return all the orders paid and unpaid. SELECT o.OrderId, o.UserId, o.Total, o.DateCreated, COALESCE(SUM(p.Amount),0) AS Paid FROM [Order] o LEFT JOIN Payment p ON p.OrderId = o.OrderId GROUP BY o.OrderId, o.Total, o.UserId, o.DateCreated I have tried to add Where (Paid < o.Total) but it does not work, any idea? After server restart - one record have new date and others have the same as first after restart. It's look like some data cache is using but I can't found where. database: mysql 5.1.25 django v1.1.1

We are running multiple webshops in a SAAS application where it is possible that users are adding products, buying products and paying for products online, and so on... When deploying we want to do this as clean as possible, so that not payments or orders or other critical data will be lost. We have a deployment scenario set up using phing (amazing tool!) but we are missing one crucial step being the "locking of the live site" while deploying. What is a possible way to lock a live site and bring it back online after deploying?

• how to tesselate bezier triangles?

  My concern are quadratic bezier triangles which I'm trying to tesselate for rendering them. I've managed to implement this by subdividing the triangle recursively like described in a wikipedia page. Though I'd like to get more precision to subdivision. The problem is that I'll either get too few subdivisions or too many because the amount of surfaces doubles on every iteration of that algorithm. In particular I would need an adaptive tesselation algorithm that allows me to define the amount of segments at the edges. I'm not sure whether I can get that though so I'd also like to hear about uniform tesselation techniques. Hardest trouble I have trouble with calculating normals for a point in bezier surface, which I'm not sure whether I need, but been trying to solve out.

  I'm having some trouble with the query below. I am trying to determine if the "category" field is A, B or C and then creating a field based on the category. That field would sum up payments field. But I'm running into error saying "incorrect syntax near keyword As". I am creating this in a SQL View. • How Many HABTM relationships in cakephp is too many?

  Hi all, I'm struggling with deciding how many HABTM relationships I really need in my cakephp app. I guess I don't quite get what "has" truly means. I don't want to have more HABTM tables than necessary. Here's what I have in my database: Users Properties Leases Payments Repairs user HABTM properties, user HABTM leases, user HABTM users, user HABTM repairs, property hasMany repairs, property hasMany leases, lease hasMany repairs. Also, I have two aliases for my users model (manager and tenant). This is one of the reasons I ended up with so many HABTM relationships, but I'm not sure it's necessary. Do I have too many user HABTM relationships? Would it be better to just have cake recurse through my models? Thanks!

• Local variable not being passed to partial template by render?

  I don't seem to be able to pass a variable to my partial template in rails (2.3.5). My code is as follows; In the main view .html.erb file: <% f.fields_for :payments do |payment_form| %> <%= render 'payment', {:f => payment_form, :t => "test" } %> <% end %> and in the _payment.html.erb file: <%= t %> produces a wrong number of arguments (0 for 1) error. The payment_form object is being passed to the partial as f without any problems. I've tried a number of variations on the above syntax (e.g. :locals => {:f => payment_form, :t => "test" } without success. I presume I'm doing something pretty basic wrong but just can't see it.

• Hide 'Would you like to remember password' iFrame

  Basically I have a website called http://yellow-taxis.uk/ which features an online booking system that is placed on the web site within an iFrame. On the online booking, it automatically logs the user in as a 'Guest' for credit card payments. When the site loads it comes up with a window asking the viewer if they 'would like to remember the password'. I was wondering if there was anyway possible to not display this window as it would be a much simpler option than changing a lot of the code within the online booking. Just to add, the iFrame is hosted on the same server as the web site (not sure if this makes a difference) Any help would be much appreciated.

  I have an ObjectManager class that is used to process payments. It is wrapped over the Order entities, so new instance has to be created when processing is required. I need to prevent the situation when several ObjectManager instances are dealing with the same order simultaneously (it happend once because of some errors on the remote payment processing center, somehow they called our callback urls twice). I'd love to get an advice how to implement it more efficiently. • Windows Azure Use Case: Fast Acquisitions

  This is one in a series of posts on when and where to use a distributed architecture design in your organization's computing needs. In these cases, one of the most difficult parts of the process is the merging or changing of the IT systems that the employees use to do their work, process payments, and even get paid. Normally this means that the two companies have disparate systems, and several approaches can be used to have the two organizations use technology between them. An organization may choose to retain both systems, and manage them separately. The advantage here is speed, and keeping the profit/loss sheets separate. Another choice is to slowly “sunset” or stop using one organization’s system, and cutting to the other system immediately or at a later date. Although a popular choice, one of the most difficult methods is to extract data and processes from one system and import it into the other. Employees at the transitioning system have to be trained on the new one, the data must be examined and cleansed, and there is inevitable disruption when this happens. Still another option is to integrate the systems. This may prove to be as much work as a transitional strategy, but may have less impact on the users or the balance sheet. Implementation: A distributed computing paradigm can be a good strategic solution to most of these strategies. Retaining both systems is made more simple by allowing the users at the second organization immediate access to the new system, because security accounts can be created quickly inside an application. There is no need to set up a VPN or any other connections than just to the Internet. Having the users stop using one system and start with the other is also simple in Windows Azure for the same reason. Extracting data to Azure holds the same limitations as an on-premise system, and may even be more problematic because of the large data transfers that might be required. In a distributed environment, you pay for the data transfer, so a mixed migration strategy is not recommended. However, if the data is slowly migrated over time with a defined cutover, this can be an effective strategy. If done properly, an integration strategy works very well for a distributed computing environment like Windows Azure. If the Azure code is architected as a series of services, then endpoints can expose the service into and out of not only the Azure platform, but internally as well. • The importance of Unit Testing in BI

  One of the main steps in the process we internally use to develop a BI solution is the implementation of Unit Test of you BI Data. As you may already know, I’ve create a simple (for now) tool that leverages NUnit to allow us to quickly create Unit Testing without having to resort to use Visual Studio Database Professional: http://queryunit.codeplex.com/ Once you have a tool like this one, you can start also to make sure that your BI solution (DWH and CUBE) is not only structurally sound (I mean, the cube or the report gets processed correctly), but you can also check that the logical integrity of your business rules is enforced. For example let’s say that the customer tell you that they will never create an invoice for a specific product-line in 2010 since that product-line is dismissed and will never be sold again. Ok we know that this in theory is true, but a lot of this business rule effectiveness depends on the fact the people does not do a mistake while inserting new orders/invoices and the ERP used implements a check for this business logic. Unfortunately these last two hypotesis are not always true, so you may find yourself really having some invoices for a product line that doesn’t exists anymore. Maybe this kind of situation in future will be solved using Master Data Management but, meanwhile, how you can give and idea of the data quality to your customers? How can you check that logical integrity of the analytical data you produce is exactly what you expect? Well, Unit Testing of a DWH or a CUBE can be a solution. Once you have defined your test suite, by writing SQL and MDX queries that checks that your data is what you expect to be, if you use NUnit (and QueryUnit does), you can then use a tool like NUnit2Report to create a nice HTML report that can be shipped via email to give information of data quality: In addition to that, since NUnit produces an XML file as a result, you can also import it into a SQL Server Database and then monitor the quality of data over time. The BoF developed a MySQL based versatile system for making payments and settlement simulations, used for analyzing liquidity needs, risk issues, changes in authority policies & regulations, and more. Running on Windows, the application has been widely adopted by central bank economists worldwide.   The Simulator is managing large data sets and thus needed a robust database as its foundation.
