• iptables allow dyndns domain name and auto update rules

  I have registered with dyndns domain for my dynamically changing public ip address to use with iptable rules. On a server I've allowed some ports for this domain in the iptables configuration like the below entries: -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT But when ever my modem restarts, I couldn't connect to these allowed ports as public ip changes with modem restart and are not updated in the iptables on the server. Is there any option to automatically update iptable rules on server.

  Hi, normally i connect to my sql server instance from my local computer, and then the server name to connect to is the name of my laptop. So i can connect to server instance 'MichelLaptop' But now i'm trying to connect to my server from outside my network, and the first thing i wonder is: what is the name of the instance? i've made a redirect to my local machine in the DNS of my domain, so i said (this is not the real data) testsql.mydomain.com goes to 190.191.192.193 and when i ping testsql.mydomain.com, i get a response from 190.191.192.193 But what then is the server name?

• Trick Ubuntu into resolving a domain name locally

  I have an Ubuntu box that I use for all sorts of things. One thing I really want to do is redirect a sub domain to a local script. For example thisbit.example.com should actually show the content from localhost/~USER/FAKE.thisbit.example.com/ which is a folder that Apache is running for me which contains a very simple PHP script which implements an offline version of a server script that I am testing against. But example.com should continue to behave normally as should notthisbit.example.com etc. Ideally I need to be able to switch from testing to live with minimal fuss when the time comes.

  Gitosis is able to authenticate users based on public/private key pair. It is able to find out which user is currently committing. However, the user name and email is taken from the client's Git configuration ('git config user.name' etc.), which can be set to arbitrary values. Is there any way to associate user names and emails with their public keys and then make Gitosis uses these names and emails as the name and email of the committer?

I have the domain example.net, which redirects to example.com/myWebsite. The point, however, that right now when somebody accesses example.net they are redirected to example.com/myWebsite and consequently to example.com/myWebsite/dirA, example.com/myWebsite/dirB etc.. I am now thinking about upgrading my account so that example.net no longer redirects to example.com - I was however wondering, however, since Google shows results searches in terms of example.com/myWebsite, how would this affect my rankings?

  Hello i have been working on a part of my plugin that has waypoints allowing the user to create delete etc. I got to thinking after using and seeing a couple of the disguse plugins. That maybe i could create a command toggle that would show the user where the waypoints they have are! I know how to do all of this i just have no idea how to display a nameplate to the client. I know its possible because disguisecraft does it i tried looking though their code but couldent find much... I belive to get this effect i need to send packets to the client if someone can direct me to a list of bukkit packets or even a solution to sending the client a custom located nameplate that would be fantastic!   After the last upgrade to my Fedora, a strange behaviour started occurring in X terminal applications. I can't seem to stop any process using Ctrl+C, it just results in printing ^C to the console. Similarly, Ctrl+Z prints ^Z and the process goes on. Both work well in non-graphical virtual consoles. I later noticed that it may not be caused by the terminal at all: INT or TSTP sent directly to the respective process are ignored, too. This comprises various applications I used to terminate using Ctrl+C on a regular basis (and which often don't have any better means of exiting): cat, find, tail -f, java, ping, mplayer when stuck on a broken file... Even bash ignores Ctrl+C when I want to break a command line I have been entering and then changed my mind (no ^C is printed in this case). I need to delete it character by character (of which there may be hundreds if filename completion has been used) or intentionally run the unwanted command. Strangely enough, vim does recognize Ctrl+C—just to say its "use :quit", of course. This is extremely annoying and prevents me from working efficiently. Everything had been working until lately, maybe a week ago or so. I can not find any possible causes in Google, perhaps I'm trying wrong search terms or misidentifying the main problem. What could be it and how could I revert the standard behaviour, please? Update Ctrl+Z works sometimes. It seems that in the very first terminal I launch after logging in it stops the running command but stops working after that.

• How can I redirect all files in a directory that doesn't conform to a certain filename structure?

  I have a website where a previous developer had updated several webpages. The issue is that the developer had made each new webpage with new filenames, and deleted the old filenames. I've worked with .htaccess redirects for a few months now, and have some understanding of the usage, however, I am stumped with this task. The old pages were named like so: www.domain.tld/subdir/file.html The new pages are named: www.domain.tld/subdir/file-new-name.html The first word of all new files is the exact name of the old file, and all new files have the same last 2 words. www.domain.tld/subdir/file1-new-name.html www.domain.tld/subdir/file2-new-name.html www.domain.tld/subdir/file3-new-name.html ect. We also need to be able to access the url: www.domain.tld/subdir/ The new files have been indexed by google (the old urls cause 404s, and need redirected to the new so that google will be friendly), and the client wants to keep the new filenames as they are more descriptive. I've attempted to redirect it in many different ways without success, but I'll show the one that stumps me the most RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !^subdir/.*\-new\-name\.html RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !^subdir/$ RewriteRule ^subdir/(.*)\.html$ http://www.domain.tld/subdir/$1\-new\-name\.html [R=301,NC] When visiting www.domain.tld/subdir/file1.html in the browser, this causes a 403 Forbidden error with a url like so: www.domain.tld/subdir/file1-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name-new-name.html I'm certain it's probably something simple that I'm overlooking, can someone please help me get a proper redirect?   By inadvertance, I've created a file called -r into my home directory. Please don't ask me how and why, I don't recall. But the fact is that now I cannot get rid of it : rm -rf rm: missing operand Try 'rm --help' for more information. Other try : rm /-/r rm: cannot remove ‘/-/r’: No such file or directory Another one : rm \-r rm: missing operand Try 'rm --help' for more information. Is there a way to remove this file without deleting the whole directory ? Thanks.

• How to change the computer name on a server configured by Puppet

  I am new to Puppet and I'm trying to get Puppet to configure my EC2 instances after they're started from a Cloud Formation Template in AWS. The problem is that all the nodes that get started from the Cloud Formation Template all have the same name (the name from the AMI that the new nodes derive from). I would love to find a way to have puppet rename the nodes when the nodes start up. (although, as far as I know, a Computer Name change requires reboot, a separate issue...) If you can point me to some documentation that can help me figure this out or if you have any ideas that would be great. My ultimate goal is to have each EC2 start with a unique name so that I can use New Relic server monitoring to report the different servers.

I've read on Redirecting different domains to your main site that it's not a bad idea to register another domain that does a 301 redirect to my website, like booksforsale.com. Now, say I want to only target a specific category withing my website, like books.com/sci-fi/ so I register sci-fi-books.com and do a 301 redirect. Would this improve my search rankings? Thanks.

• Could not use domain name instead of static IP

We are having a network problem: My partner can access an internal website using the domain name, e.g. http://website.name, but I can only access that website using the direct IP, e.g. 192.168.1.85. I can not ping that web server using "ping website.name" but it works if I using "ping 192.168.1.85". I want to use the domain name. Please help.

There is a nslookup entry for the old server name and a DNS entry for the old server. How do we safely remove the old DNS entry without breaking the computer offline folder storage locally. Can we change the pointing location on the offline file storage to point to the new server name.

• Can't browse computer via nlb cluster name

  I have a fileserver nlb cluster, currently set to single affinity, made up of 2 2008R2 servers. We switched the primary node today. Now our Windows XP workstations can't browse to the cluster name (i.e. \fileserver) but can browse to the cluster ip address (i.e. \192.168.1.1) and can browse the member server by name (i.e. \filesvr1). I remember having a similar issue when we had to change a registry setting to allow Windows XP boxes to see another file server that was in a failover cluster but had to be referred to by another name (\thisfileserver instead of \fileserver). Convoluted, for sure, but it helped to prevent any code changes from happening. Well all of the programmers have their code on \fileserver and we can't have them switch their links every time \filesvr1 supercedes \filesvr2 or vice versa. I can't remember that registry setting that allowed the file server to ignore that it's being called by the wrong name. HELP!
