• What parameters to use to compare GUI frameworks / toolkits?

  I'm doing some research on the best GUI toolkit to use for future products at the company. We're talking about a fairly large organizations with quite a bit of code and a complete rewrite project in planning. Don't ask. Anyway, I'm trying to create a list relevant parameters to judge the toolkits. What would you use to drive the comparison? Here's what I've got so far: Maturity Ease of development Ease of prototyping Ease of maintenance Size of hiring pool Available knowledge at the company Training costs Community size Community level of expertise (how hard to find good answers to complex problems) Amount of expert-level books available Ability to interface to other technologies Deployment considerations Visual aesthetics Ability to access OS resources Multiple monitor support (something that might come in handy in our particular application)

• How do you show the desktop in a blink in Ubuntu?

  We know you can either click on the show desktop icon or use CTRL+ALT+D to ask Ubuntu to show the desktop. Unfortunately, this does not always show the desktop in one action. Sometime, and this is true for at least the last 4 version of the OS, it brings up first to the front all the windows, THEN, with a second click, show you the desktop. This is very annoying, as when you show the desktop it generally to quickly click on a shortcut. To understand what I'm talking about, open 7 windows, minimize some, bring some to the front, maximize one, then show the desktop. Then do that on Windows. You'll see the difference.

• Roanoke Code Camp 2014

I attended sessions on Apache Cassandra by Dr. Dave King (@tildedave), Angular JS by Kevin Israel (@kevadev), and JavaScript for Object-Oriented Programmers by Joel Cochran (@joelcochran).  I regret I was unable to attend all the sessions. • Is static universally "evil" for unit testing and if so why does resharper recommend it?

  I have found that there are only 3 ways to unit test (mock/stub) dependencies that are static in C#.NET: Moles TypeMock JustMock Given that two of these are not free and one has not hit release 1.0, mocking static stuff is not too easy. Does that make static methods and such "evil" (in the unit testing sense)? And if so, why does resharper want me to make anything that can be static, static? (Assuming resharper is not also "evil".) Clarification: I am talking about the scenario when you want to unit test a method and that method calls a static method in a different unit/class. By most definitions of unit testing, if you just let the method under test call the static method in the other unit/class then you are not unit testing, you are integration testing. (Useful, but not a unit test.)

• CMS for single user-editable pages?

  Does anybody know of a CMS where users can edit their own page, and their page only (something similar to about.me, except with more customization/options)? I'm not talking about profiles, but more like an individual web page for people's businesses. I want to be able to give local businesses the opportunity to make a single web page for their businesses with ease. I have looked at many CMS's, but I can't find anything that offers this type of functionality. I've check out the following: Unify Concrete 5 Drupal Simple CMS CMS Made Simple (and more) If anybody knows a CMS with the functionality that I'm looking for, or even a regular CMS with modules/plugins that I would be able to use, that would be awesome. • SOA Patterns book &ndash; your opinion needed

  It has been quite awhile since I added anything new to the book. I have my reasons (some would probably say excuses :) ) mainly that finding the energy and time to write is very hard with a wife, 3 kids and a startup. Anyway, Ive been talking with Manning lately trying to figure out what to do with this project. I was quite amazed to learn that 1000 or so of you purchased the MEAP edition even though it only contains 5 chapters and havent been updated in a long time....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Circle vs Edge collision detection / resolution

  I made a javascript class Ball.js that handles physics interactions betweens balls as well as painting. In the v1.0, the ball vs ball collision detection and resolution is well handled. In the next version (v2), I'm trying to add edgeCollision handling. I'm having some problems, maybe you will be able to help me. • I can't click on some things and other problems

  I have some issues with my Ubuntu 12.04 . When I open Ubuntu Software Center, the program opens and than just disappears just when it is opened. My Ubuntu 12.04 won't install any updates because of this error in the picture. Worst of all: I can't click on anything except for programs that from Ubuntu: for example I can't browse the internet via Firefox or Chromium... I can't click on folders. I can't click on things in my Thunderbird mail program. But I can click on Update manager for example... It is just clicking that doesn't work, when I try 'clicking' something with using the tab-button and enter I can click on something - in every case. But that's just too annoying to do. Oh sorry guys I had some screenshots that illustrate the problems, but I can't get them off the 'problem pc ubuntu 12.04' about which I am talking... it's so sad

• Avatar creation / dressing feature

  What is the effort required to use a game engine such as Unreal or Unity, etc. and create an avatar customization features...complete with clothes. The user should be able to customize the body features and the clothes need to then fit onto the customized body. What is needed? Can you create one set of 3D models for clothes and somehow programatically have the clothes adapt to the body shape? I.e. The same shirt model will be able to fit on a skinny person vs. someone with a big beer belly. How difficult is this? What are the steps needed to implement this avatar creation/dressing feature. I'm basically talking about something like in Rockband 3.

• Ubuntu Stuck at boot after update

  I'm doing this question because I can't edit other questions and I'm trying to set up my computer with Ubuntu but I'm a total idiot about this. I want to give Ubuntu a try, I build up a system specially for Ubuntu but when everything seems to be OK I made a suggested update and now when I restart my computer Ubuntu is stuck in the purple screen. I read other questions about this but, as I said, I'm a total idiot with this and I don't understand a bit what you guys are talking about when saying reboot with Grub, press Ctrl-F4 or whatever. My keyboard shutdown when this happens and only accepts Alt-Ctrl-Del to reboot again. Ctrl-F4 is not working for me. Pleas Help Me, cure my MS insanity Pleaseee! :) Any help I will appreciate it!

  SharePoint 2010 Training: more information First of all, I am a proponent of SharePoint apps. As I have said many times over, SharePoint Apps make me very ‘appy, they are very app-propriate. But there are some points to consider that make a bit app-rehensive. These are all mentioned in my book “SharePoint 2013 - Planet of the Apps”, .. but here are some thoughts of the negatives of Apps that I think we need to consider before diving in, Mutliple Servers, More Complexity Apps, by definition will include an extra server. This excludes SharePoint-hosted apps of course. Extra servers by definition will add more complexity. As it is, when you introduce SharePoint to an organization, the number of servers multiply like bunnies. Now you will have additional servers, and these servers talking with each other. You will have to maintain trusts, and you will have to patch more stuff, reset more “admin” passwords – you get my point. Read full article ....

• LuaJit FFI and hiding C implementation details

  I would like to extend an application using LuaJit FFI. Having seen http://luajit.org/ext_ffi_tutorial.html this is surprisingly easy when comparing this to the Lua C API. So far so good. However I do not plainly want to wrap C functions but provide a higher level API to users writing scripts for the application. Especially I do not want users to be able to access "primitives", i.e. the ffi.* namespace. Is this possible or will that ffi namespace be available to user's Lua scripts? On the issue of Sandboxing Lua I found http://lua-users.org/wiki/SandBoxes which is not talking about FFI though. Furthermore, the plan I have described above is assuming that the introduction of abstraction layers happens on the lua side of code. Is this an advisable approach or would you rather abstract functionality on the statically compiled code (on the C-side)?

• Is there a name for this issue?

  I was just talking to my partner about how hard it is to personally judge how good your product is after a while because you use it so often. You literally spend hours on your computer doing nothing but work on this Consumer Facing application, and you start to feel a little fatigue of using it over and over and over, at least a hundred times a day. You get scared this fatigue may mean the product you are building may have the same effect on the users and might mean you are doing something wrong. All i'm asking is, is there a name for this in product development? For the fact that as a designer+ programmer+everything else, your product might not suck as much as you think simply because you spend way to much time with it, or a variation of this?

He noted that back in 2007, German police forces said that they couldn't tap into Skype calls because of of its strong encryption and complicated peer-to-peer network connections; in fact, Skype bluntly stated at the time that, due to its encryption and architecture techniques, it couldn't conduct wiretaps. • How Byte loading/storing is implemented By the CPU?

  I know that in 32bit machine, cpu read from memory 32bits at a time. since the registers in this case is 32bit in size too, I can understand how this works. What I don't understand is how the cpu implement load instructions of 1 byte. does it load the whole word where the single byte is located to the register, then perform some kind of "byte shifting", or does the cpu can load a single byte, in this case when does the byte masking happen, is it until the byte got loaded in the register, or it happen when byte is send through the data bus ? P.S. The cpu Im using is MIPS, the instructions Im talking about are: lb or lbu

I'm interested in add to my previous knowledge, skills about functional programming, but all I've seen until now seems very obfuscated and esoteric. • Efficient way to calculate "vision cones" on 2D tile map?

  I'm trying to calculate which tiles a particular unit can "see" if facing a certain direction on a tile map (within a certain range and angle of facing). The easiest way would be to draw a certain number of tiles outward and raycast to each tile. However, I'm hoping for something slightly more efficient. A picture says a thousand words: The red dot is the unit (who's facing upwards). My goal is to calculate the yellow tiles. The green blocks are walls (walls are between tiles, and it's easy to check if you can pass between two tiles). The blue line represents something like the "raycasting" method I was talking about, but I'd rather not have to do this. EDIT: Units can only be facing north/south/east/west (0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees) and FoV is always 90 degrees. Should simplify some calculations. I'm thinking there's some sort of recursive-ish/stack-based/queue-based algorithm, but I can't quite figure it out. Thanks!

What is the recommended amount of time to wait before upgrade to a non LTS release? Im just talking about the desktop version of course. • Where to hire a scenario writer for a small interactive story game?

  I need a scenario for a small dialog-based game / interactive story. The game would be used as an example for a middleware tool we're developing. I would like to buy an existing story (it should be dynamic of course — with branching dialogs etc.), or hire someone to write a new one. Please advise, where to go to find such person / service? We're based in Russia, so getting a talented enough native English writer locally is a bit of a problem. Update: To be extra clear: We must get all necessary rights to reuse the story and make a derived work (i.e. the game we're talking about) from it. This is a commercial product. Borrowing someone else's work at random and using it just not going to work.

• Testing web applications written in java

  How do you test the web applications (both server side and client side code)? The testing method has to work irrespective of the framework used (struts, spring web mvc) etc. I am using Java for the server side code, Javascript and HTML for the client side code. This is the sample test case of what I am talking about: 1. When you click on a link, the pop up opens. 2. Change some value in the pop up (say a drop down value) and it gets saved in the DB. 3. Click the popup again, you get the changed values. Can we simulate this kind of thing using unit test cases? Is JUnit enough for this?
