  • Windows server 2003 default administrator password

    Sorry if this is an overly simplistic question, but I'm a bit stuck here. :) I need a windows machine for me to do some programming for class. Since I have my Macbook with me everywhere I go, I figured that it would be easiest to install a vm. And since I can get a copy of Windows server 2k3 for free via dreamspark, I thought I'd try to do that. Here's what happened though: I installed windows server (disk one). When the system booted up, vmware automatically installed VMWare tools and prompted me to restart. There was also a prompt to start the installation of disc 2, but I figured it would be better to restart before doing that. When the machine came back up, I was prompted to log in as the administrator. The problem is that I wasn't prompted to make an administrator account or password. Is there a default password I can use? I've tried all the obvious ones (blank, password, etc) and googling, but I didn't come up with anything.

  • Can't add service account to domain group during SQL cluster install

    I'm installing a 2008 instance on a Server 2003 machine which is already running SQL 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group? UPDATE: I'm looking for specific instructions. I have a global group called domain\servicegroup - what do I tell the security folks to do. I'd love to figure it out myself, but I don't have access to this stuff.

But: The databases for the webserver are hosted on a SQL Server 2005 Standard today. So the question is: Is it possible to move a database from a Standard Server to an Express Server?

  • Multiple PXE server same subnet

    I've been struggling with this for some time. I have a few test machines that boot from the network, they receive the boot data from the DHCP server, this tells them who is the boot server where is the file they'll boot etc. However, I need to add a second PXE server in the same subnet (create another Vlan is not an option right now). I read somewhere that I may be able to send certain parameters to certain machines based on their MAC address (this way choosing what computers boot from what server) however I cannot find how to do this, anyone knows how? this will be my solution but I cannot find the answer. My DHCP is a windows server 2003 I have 2 servers running custom flavors of Linux server as TFTP servers. Some machines use data to boot from server 1, and the others must bu able to boot from server 2. Thx

  • Perform Unit Conversions with the Windows 7 Calculator

    Want to easily convert area, volume, temperature, and many other units?  With the Calculator in Windows 7, it’s easy to convert most any unit into another. The New Calculator in Windows 7 Calculator received a visual overhaul in Windows 7, but at first glance it doesn’t seem to have any new functionality.  Here’s Windows 7’s Calculator on the left, with Vista’s calculator on the right.   But, looks can be deceiving.  Window’s 7’s calculator has lots of new exciting features.  Let’s try them out.  Simply type Calculator in the start menu search. To uncover the new features, click the View menu.  Here you can select many different modes, including Unit Conversion mode which we will look at. When you select the Unit Conversion mode, the Calculator will expand with a form on the left side. This conversions pane has 3 drop-down menus.  From the top one, select the type of unit you want to convert. In the next two menus, select which values you wish to convert to and from.  For instance, here we selected Temperature in the first menu, Degrees Fahrenheit in the second menu, and Degrees Celsius in the third menu. Enter the value you wish to convert in the From box, and the conversion will automatically appear in the bottom box. The Calculator contains dozens of conversion values, including more uncommon ones.  So if you’ve ever wanted to know how many US gallons are in a UK gallon, or how many knots a supersonic jet travels in an hour, this is a great tool for you!   Conclusion Windows 7 is filled with little changes that give you an all-around better experience in Windows to help you work more efficiently and productively.  With the new features in the Calculator, you just might feel a little smarter, too!   • How to copy mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 across forests?

    Hi. Were going through a quite difficult conversion from an old ASP-solution to an entirely new one. This includes moving mailboxes from Ex2003 to Ex2007. We want to do this without deleting the old mailboxes on the Ex2003 server, to have a "fall back" in case somehing goes wrong. I have investigated the "Move-Mailbox" cmdlet in the Ex2007 shell, and it seems to fit our needs quite well. The only problem being that we want to keep the old mailboxes. This could easily be accomplished with the -SourceMailboxCleanupOptions, but we can't use this when we have used the -AllowMerge switch. The reason we need -AllowMerge is because all the user accounts with connected mailboxes are already created on Ex2007(Some automatic user creation tool, no real relevance to the case in question) The twist is that the exchange servers are in two different forests... Windows 2003 SP1 on DC1, Windows 2003 SP2 on DC2 in forest 1. Windows 2003 R2 SP2 on DC1 in forest 2. Can we use the Move-Mailbox safely for this purpose? And if yes, how?

  • What ways are there to set permissions on an Exchange 2003 mailbox?

    I'm having a difficult/impossible time tracing down a permissions issue on an Exchange 2003 mailbox, and I was wondering if I'm missing any technical possibilities here. The basic question is what ways are there to set a user's permissions to access a mailbox in Exchange 2003? I know of two. Permissions on the mailbox itself (Mailbox Rights) and having delegated rights. And then, if it's possible, how would one view all the permissions (including delegated permissions) on the mailbox? The situation is that a new user who's been set up "exactly like all the others" in his department (pretty sure he was copied via the right click option in ADUC, in fact) can't access a specific shared mailbox, which I've been assured about a dozen other people do have access to and access on a regular basis. As to how they got permissions to the mailbox, no one knows, so it must have been granted by a white wizard whose spell has since worn off, so now IT has to handle it instead. Anyway... This mailbox is a normal AD user, created as a service account, for which no one knows the password (of course), so it's probably not the case that this service account was being used to delegate permissions. Upon taking examining the Mailbox Rights directly... Here are the permissions I see: This leads me to believe that one of two things are happening - the managers have been delegating full mailbox permissions to the rest of the department, or everyone's logging in using... not their own account. But, before I get too excited about the prospect of busting out the LART and strolling over to that department, I want to make sure I'm not missing another possible explanation. Like most of the rest of the world, I ditched Exchange 2003 at the earliest possible opportunity, and had been looking forward to never seeing it again, so I'm a bit rusty on the intricacies of how it [mostly, sort of] works. Anyone see any or possibilities, or things I may have missed, or does the LART get to come out and play?

After installing the addin one of the user's outlook crashes when a contact is opened, i.e, when ItemProperties of the contact are read.Some theses properties are read using MAPI.There is no exception being logged even though we have try/catch and logging in all methods.   • SQL Server Agent was not running on Server Dynamics CRM 2013

    I'm trying to install Dynamics CRM 2013 on a server. This server is on a VM. There are several other VMs, an ADDS & DNS, a MSSQL and a WebServer VM. Each server is a Windows Server 2012 R2. The SQL Server is 2012 Enterprise. Each VM is part of the main Domain, set by the ADDS & DNS. NSLookup confirms I can see the computer at the right IP address. Each separate VM has its own static IP, the DNS is set to the ADDS & DNS. I use the domain administrator to log into all the servers, and make the that domain administrator a local administrator. I've set up all the domain users for the CRM and gave them appropriate permissions, I have also added the accounts to the appropriate places, such that the CRM Deployment user is in the SQL security. The SQL Agent is running. SQL server configuration manager has SQL server network configuration TCP/IP enabled to allow remote connections. The SQL server has the domain user as a administrator, which is the same user being used to install the CRM. In the CRM setup i point to the [Servername]\[Instance] and I have also tried just the [Servername]. to make this easier I called the server MSSQL and left the instance name to the default. I even install the MSSQL instance as the domain administrator. CRM can find the ReportServer url. I have enable all the ports required, including: 135, 1433, 1434, 2382, 2383, 4022. 1434 UDP. I feel like I have absolutely done everything, I have google many times and tried all the different methods, and for the life of me I cant seem to get the CRM setup to find the SQL server agent. It passes everything else perfectly fine. I can even ping the MSSQL server. What is the problem, why does the CRM still keep giving the error: SQLSERVERAGENT (SQLSERVERAGENT) service is not running on the server MSSQL On the MSSQL server, the name of the sql server agent service is: SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)

  • How to register putty public key on windows server 2003?

    So we were trying to transfer files from unix server to a windows server 2003. I currently don't have any visibility on the unix server since it is being handled by another team. So in order for the 2 servers to establish connection, they sent us a public key which they said that we need to register on our windows server 2003 machine. can anyone help me? i cant seem to find anything about registering this public key generated by putty on a windows server 2003. there's no directory to put the public key(like in linux authorized_keys). Any help will be appreciated. thanks in advance. EDIT: we're trying to transfer file via pscp if this info is needed.

  • How can I set Windows Server 2008 juntion points to Every Read Allow?

    We have apps running on Windows Server 2003 and now 2008 as well. Unfortunately some of our code relies on inspecting the Documents and Settings directory which no longer exists in Windows 2003. It looks like there are "Junction Points" set up for backwards compatibility - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756982.aspx. But it seems like nothing I can do can get me access. I basically need to be able to call from a command line on both 2003 and 2008: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe Which translates in Windows 2008 to : C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe I've tried setting up my own "Documents and Settings" folder in 2008 but it won't let me as that seems to be reserved for these Juntion Points.

    Hi, In early January 2011, we completely switched to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. On our domain controller set up a DFS is that the users as "Z: drive" is displayed. The DFS was it in the same way during our time with Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows XP. At the time it has always worked without problems. Since Windows 7, we have sometimes the case that when a user accesses to the Z drive, the Explorer will return to the workplace without a user can do. After two to three trials of the Explorer remains in the network drive and the users work. This phenomenon occurs irregularly and you can not restrict exactly why. In the event log at the time no obvious entries are logged. Does anyone know the problem or has had similar experiences? I am grateful for any help. Greetings, sY!v3Rs

  • Quickly Preview Songs in Windows Media Center 12 in Windows 7

    Do you ever wish you could quickly preview a song without having to play it? Today we look at a quick and easy way to do that in Windows Media Player 12. Open Windows Media Player in Library Mode and select your Music library. Hover your cursor over the Title of the song and a Preview pop-up window will appear after a few seconds.    Click on the Preview in the pop-up window and the song will begin to play. As the preview begins to play, you will see the Skip link and a song timer. Click on Skip to jump ahead 15 seconds in the song. When you are finished previewing the song, simply move your mouse away from the preview window to stop playback. Automatically Preview Songs You can adjust settings in Windows Media Player to automatically preview songs when you hover your cursor over the title. Select Tools  from the menu and click Options. On the Options window, select the Library tab and click on Automatically preview songs on title hover. Click OK.   Now when you simply hover your cursor over the song title the preview window will appear and playback will begin automatically. This feature works just as well in Details view as it does in Expanded Tile view. Would you like to stream your music to other computers on your network?   • Server 2003, XP Clients, DNS issues

    Hello, Im having DNS issues on my network. My DC is my DNS server 10.76.4.11 and recently I configured a forwarder to 10.4.36.10. My workstations are not working because they cannot resolve the domain controller name because of DNS. an ipconfig /all reveals that they know the IP of the DNS server is 10.76.4.11, but if I nslookup 10.76.4.11 it forwards the request to 10.4.36.10 and goes nowhere. I have since removed the forwarder, but still any nslookup requests on workstations are going to 10.4.36.10. If I nslookup 10.76.4.11 on the server it can resolve its name, but for some reason when it receives the same request from workstations it doesnt know what to do. All the A, CNAME records etc are correct. DHCP's DNS is set correctly, GPOs are correct (even though they cant refresh cos of this problem!), the servers network adapter has its DNS set to 10.76.4.11. Just don't know. Very confused.

    Hello everyone, I have Windows Server 2003/2008 machine, and I deployed some application on this machine. I want to put this machine in a sandbox environment, which means I want this machine to be able to access only proxy/gateway, its private used SQL Server database server, and I want to avoid network access from this machine to other machines in lab server room. Any easy solutions? BTW: my current environment is, I have a server which runs some Beta software in a Lab server room. It connects internet through proxy/gateway. Since the software is Beta, I want to reduce the risk of being hacked from internet and controlled by hacking sofwtare to attack my other servers in the same Lab server. thanks in advance, George

    Hi all, I just set up Mercurial on our main webserver, hosting repositories via hgwebdir.cgi. The problem I'm having now is when I run hg push from my local machine to the server's repository, it takes an absolutely ridiculous amount of time to push a very small directory, with only a single changeset. Is it possible that I've set something up wrong? I keep getting HTTP Error 502: Bad Gateway. Thanks!

    I have a weird issue and I hope someone can steer me in the right direction for resolving this please. When I execute the following query against a linked server, I get the following error. I can connect to the server in SSMS as a separate server, and execute a similar query against its Deposits table. The nn.nn is my own replacement to avoid broadcasting our server addresses. The query: select td.Batch , td.DateTimeDeposited from Deposits cd left join [172.nn.nn.32\sqlexpress].Terminal.dbo.Deposits td on cd.DateTimeDeposited = td.DateTimeDeposited The error: OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "172.nn.nn.11\sqlexpress" returned message "Login timeout expired". OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "172.nn.nn.11\sqlexpress" returned message "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.". Msg 65535, Level 16, State 1, Line 0 SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Notice how the error is about server 172.nn.nn.11 and not 172.nn.nn.32. SOLVED (STUPID ME): Somebody had added an extra bit to my query that was scrolled off-screen and was querying the 17.nn.nn.11 server.

    I tried to create a full-text index and got this error: Msg 9967, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 A default full-text catalog does not exist in database 'foo' or user does not have permission to perform this action. FYI--I connected to the target sql server with Windows Authentication. What do I need to do in Sql Server 2005 and/or in Windows Server 2003 to get permissions? Please be thorough (assume I am a n00b). Thank you.

For example they are seen on the network as one server with the combination of all HDD from each server? Example: \\Server1 - 1 x 1tb hdd \\Server2 - 1 x 1tb hdd I would like users of the network to be able to store their documents on both servers for load balancing. So basically a RAID between the two servers? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Macbook Pro Triple Boot OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Windows 8

    MacBook Pro (Summer 2010 Model, Basic Model) I currently have OS X Lion and Windows 7 running side by side on my MacBook Pro. However I have a need to get Windows 8 running as well in this mix (a Virtual Machine is not good enough, I need the performance). I have created a suitably sized parition (80GB) that is recognizable in Boot Camp. However every time I try to boot from the USB stick (that worked to install Windows 8 on my PC) using the latest version of rEFIt, it just boots Windows 7 and not the Windows 8 installer. I cannot start the installation within Windows 7 as it will just install over Windows 7. I'm guessing the Boot Camp emulation is doing something werid to stop the "Press any key to install Windows..." message from appearing (which should happen if the installer detects Windows is already installed (e.g. if you left your install disk in). Is there a way to get around this / force the installer to start? (Note I cannot start the Windows 7 installer either if I wanted to install a second copy of Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8)

  • Using ClearType Tuner in Windows 7

    Back in Windows XP there was an important Power toy created to enable ClearType for users of LCD screens. Now it’s standard in Windows 7, but you may not know about it. So let’s take a look. Access Clear Type in Windows 7 Click on the Start Menu and type cleartype into the search box and hit Enter. It should be enabled by default, but if not just check the box to enable it. Now, in the next step, you can enable it for two or more monitors if you have them. Or you could select an individual one if it works best for one but not another. Some people might want it turned off if they have a CRT and a LCD monitor for example. Now you can go through the wizard and pick out what resolution works best for the monitor(s) you choose.   Just select the text in each step that looks best for you. Then finish it out… This is a cool trick you may not have known about that already exists in Windows 7, and it can definitely help you get the best look of the text on each screen if you’re using different monitors! You may have to experiment with some different settings to get what works best for you. If you’re using Vista or XP check out our article on tuning clear type font settings in Vista/XP.   • Windows SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 migration

    I am in the process of upgrading my Windows SBS 2008 server running Exchange, Active Directory and as a File server to Windows Server 2012 essentials. Now I know that Windows Server 2012 essentials does not have exchange, thus I was looking to migrate the Active directory and the file server to Windows Server 2012 essentials, Then I would have a separate Virtual machine running Windows server 2012 standard with Exchange 2013. Now my question is, what should I do first? Migrate the AD and File server to Windows 2012 essentials and then after the migration is finished, I create a local move of the mailboxes from SBS 2008 to Windows Server 2012 standard running exchange 2013? or should this be the other way round?
