• Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? (if it exists) Would I be better upgrading laptop to one with 2 digital ports ( I just see a lot with VGA and HDMI though) specs: Model: Toshiba Satellite C675-S106 (Windows 7) Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 3000 (supports 2 displays) Processor: Intel Core i3-2350M

• Windows 8.1 killed my wifi

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? • Reliable 1tb or larger hard drive?

  I am in the market for 2-3 new drives, I would like each to be at least 1tb to 2tb in size. I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

• Will a higher hard drive size affect performance

  My laptop came with a 500 GB hard drive. I use my laptop for storing my digital photographs, and only have about 14 GB of file storage left on the original hard drive. I have a 750 GB external hard drive, but am leery of relying on it for primary storage as I tend to knock things over and it has already crashed once and I lost a lot of the files. I am looking at a 1 TB internal hard drive, but am concerned if storing so much data will affect the computer's performance. Should I also increase RAM from 4 to 8 GB (the limit for my 64-bit, Windows 7, Asus A54C laptop)?

• Enable multiple audio output on Windows 7

  For Windows 7, 64 bit: I have a digital SPDIF output to my stereo, which controls speakers in other rooms. I also have a set of speakers connected to the regular audio jack at the computer. This allows me to send music to the kitchen while my child plays games on the computer. Works great. Except when I'm playing games and still want to listen to music. ;-D I know I can manually switch WMP to play through the speakers instead of SPDIF, but I was wondering if there's any way to enable simultaneous audio out in Windows 7? Virtual Audio Card is a non-starter because I'm running 64 bits and the VAC driver isn't signed.

• DICOM Image viewer for Windows

  In case you were wondering DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a set of standards in medical imaging. I have a CT result saved conforming to that standard and I want to be able to see the scans. The directory structure looks like this: 123456 (folder) |- 2342345 (file) |- 2342346 (file) |- 2342347 (file) |- [...] (more files) DICOMDIR (file) A Google search showed a lot of results for DICOM viewer and I even tried one but it only shows the thumbnails of the images.   I have recurring BSODs that really have me scratching my head. Here's a look at the errors: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT 0x1A (ntoskrnl.exe) - I've seen this 9 times since April 2012 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x24 (Ntfs.sys) - this one's new, happend 4 days ago BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x19 (win32k.sys) - also new, happened 7 days ago My system specs: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard (Rev 2) * RMA'd my Rev 1 due to recall 16GB (4 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM 2 x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB SATA HDD EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card I've got Windows 7 Home Premium and it's completely patched. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials, which is up-to-date and always present. I've run MemTest86+ from a USB drive for up to nine hours, giving my RAM a total of 6 passes, and it didn't detect a single error. I've used chkdsk in Windows 7 to scan the C:/ drive on boot (twice) and it found no problems. How can I find out what's causing all these blue screens?

• RoboCopy Log Files missing whitespace?

  So I'm working on a script to use RoboCopy to copy a bunch of files, and log what it's copied. It works reasonably well, except for the logfiles. They tend to look like this: C:\Users\Tech\Documents\desktop.initechscan1.jpgtechscan2.jpgtechscan3.jpgtechscan4.jpgtechscan5.jpgwsus.jpgwsus2.jpgC:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Music\C:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Pictures\C:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Videos\C:\Users\Tech\Documents\My Digital Editions\ As you can see, the log seems to be missing all whitespace and separators between entries. Is there something I can do to fix this? It's kind of frustrating. The commandline I'm using is this: C:\Users\Tech\Desktop>Robocopy.exe C:\Users\Tech\Documents c:\Temp /e /l /b /xj /xf ntuser.* desktop.ini *.lnk /np /njh /log:migratedfiles.txt /v I have the /l in there since I'm debugging, and it's the easiest way to keep from copying everything a million times.

• Does a bad Internet connection increase bandwidth usage?

  My (Rogers) cable connection has been pretty bad recently (channels 3 and 10 are particularly fuzzy—it’s analog, not digital cable). Not surprisingly, this has caused my cable modem to drop out and have to reestablish a connection a couple of times since it started. The poor connection of course means higher corruption (not necessarily dropped per se) which causes the TCP/IP stack to have to retransmit packets more often. Reduction of bandwidth throughput aside, I got to wondering if it increases the actual bandwidth usage. That is, if there is a high error rate on the line causing packets to have to be retransmitted: Does this increase a bandwidth monitoring program’s numbers? Does the ISP count the retransmitted packets toward the monthly cap? Based on what I remember from my university networking courses and common sense, I have a feeling that the answer to both questions is yes, but I cannot reliably measure the first, and have no authoritative answer for the second. I’m wondering if maybe the retransmitted packets are acknowledged as being duplicates and thus not counted somewhere along the line.

• Hadoop streaming job on EC2 stays in "pending" state

  Trying to experiment with Hadoop and Streaming using cloudera distribution CDH3 on Ubuntu. Have valid data in hdfs:// ready for processing. Wrote little streaming mapper in python. When I launch a mapper only job using: hadoop jar /usr/lib/hadoop/contrib/streaming/hadoop-streaming*.jar -file /usr/src/mystuff/mapper.py -mapper /usr/src/mystuff/mapper.py -input /incoming/STBFlow/* -output testOP hadoop duly decides it will use 66 mappers on the cluster to process the data. The testOP directory is created on HDFS. A job_conf.xml file is created. But the job tracker UI at port 50030 never shows the job moving out of "pending" state and nothing else happens. CPU usage stays at zero. (the job is created though) If I give it a single file (instead of the entire directory) as input, same result (except Hadoop decides it needs 2 mappers instead of 66). I also tried using the "dumbo" Python utility and launching jobs using that: same result: permanently pending. So I am missing something basic: could someone help me out with what I should look for? The cluster is on Amazon EC2. Firewall issues maybe: ports are enabled explicitly, case by case, in the cluster security group.

• How can I get Windows 8 to automatically disable touch when I am using my Wacom pen and turn it back on when I am not

  I have an HP convertible tablet computer which I just upgraded to Windows 8. The problem (which existed under Windows 7 as well) is that this tablet has both a capacitive touch screen (with multi-touch) AND a wacom-type tablet built in to the screen that works using electro-magnetic resonance with the provided stylus. My Use Case: Most of the time I am happy using my fingers and the touch interface for navigation and whatnot. However, when I want to get down to serious note-taking/drawing, I want to use the wacom functionality. The problem is that any comfortable writing position has me resting my arm/hand on the screen, which activates the touch technology (despite supposed palm-detection algorithms) and completely screws up my input paradigm. My Ideal Solution: Ideallly, since wacom technology senses when the pen is "close" to the screen, I would love to have touch be automatically disabled whenever the wacom pen is detected, and turned back on when it is out of range. this would allow me to seamless switch between the two input methods, and since I NEVER want to use both at once would work perfectly for me. An acceptable alternative: As a next best option, It would be great to be able to turn off the touch functionality (leaving the wacom in place) whenever I entered specific apps (e.g. OneNote, Photoshop, Gimp, Pencil, etc.) and then have it turn back on when I left that app.... As a worst case at least lets me use my PC option: If I could create a shortcut (tile or otherwise) that flips the touch on and off without going all the way through the nested computer settings, that would be better than nothing. • Windows 7 ignores F6/F8 and will not boot

  I have a work PC with sophos safeguard encryption on it. Windows failed to start. When I bootup I receive an error saying a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc0000098 Info: The windows boot configuration data file does not contain a valid OS entry. This began after the PC forced me to run a system recovery. My machine had powered down improperly (power outage?) and simply would not respond to my keyboard input to cancel the option to scan my system. After the scan "repaired" a boot file, my system crashed. Now it tells me I can insert my windows 7 disk and run recovery. I can't simply do this because of Safeguard. The system recovery can't see my encrypted drive. I tried hitting F2 to manually login to Safeguard and then selected the option to boot from media. The computer prompts me to hit any key to boot from disk...which I do, but once again it is not reading my keyboard input. I can't get F8/F6 to bypass startup files and get me to a command prompt like the old days. If I could get to a command prompt I might could recover the file windows jacked up from its backup location...though I may need to use the windows recovery disk UI to do this..??? In the past I've been able to slap in a PS/2 keyboard when the USB keyboards stop responding like this. I have no PS/2 keyboard available. Anyone have any idea how I can undo the damage windows system recovery has done with safeguard installed?

• Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

  As a junior technician I've had to deal with (or will have to deal with) some problems in the past and only being a junior technician I don't have the confidence or respect from management staff to speak up. For instance, we're having a entirely new system. From Windows Server 2003/XP going to Windows Server 2008 R2/Windows 7/VMWare/Digital Signage and the current amount of time dedicated to the training of the IT support department currently stands at 0. They seem to think that all IT systems are the same and are going to get a bit of shock when I can't help them. I think there;s some UK legislation saying a school/business have to put money and time aside for training, but I'm not sure. What have you had to deal with?

  I'm new to digital books and I use the Kindle app for Windows to read the books I bought but I hate how I can't read the bottom paragraph of a book in the Kindle app in the centre of the monitor; I have to bend my neck down and it gets sore fast. Problem is that I can't move the Kindle book page up or halfway as when I'm reading a PDF document; if you try to move the page in Kindle it skips to the next new page. So, I thought maybe converting my books to PDF will solve the problem. How do I convert Kindle books into the PDF format? Does anyone have another solution? • Need hard disk recommendation for linux home server.

  Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

• Can I use iptables on my Varnish server to forward HTTPS traffic to a specific server?

  We use Varnish as our front-end web cache and load balancer, so we have a Linux server in our development environment, running Varnish with some basic caching and load-balancing rules across a pair of Windows 2008 IIS web servers. We have a wildcard DNS rule that points *.development at this Varnish box, so we can browse http://www.mysite.com.development, http://www.othersite.com.development, etc. The problem is that since Varnish can't handle HTTPS traffic, we can't access https://www.mysite.com.development/ For dev/testing, we don't need any acceleration or load-balancing - all I need is to tell this box to act as a dumb proxy and forward any incoming requests on port 443 to a specific IIS server. I suspect iptables may offer a solution but it's been a long while since I wrote an iptables rule. Some initial hacking has got me as far as iptables -F iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --sport 443 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 443 -j DNAT --to 10.0.0.241:443 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p tcp -d 10.0.0.241 --dport 443 -j MASQUERADE iptables -A INPUT -j LOG --log-level 4 --log-prefix 'PreRouting ' iptables -A OUTPUT -j LOG --log-level 4 --log-prefix 'PostRouting ' iptables-save > /etc/iptables.rules (where 10.0.0.241 is the IIS box hosting the HTTPS website), but this doesn't appear to be working. To clarify - I realize there's security implications about HTTPS proxying/caching - all I'm looking for is completely transparent IP traffic forwarding. I don't need to decrypt, cache or inspect any of the packets; I just want anything on port 443 to flow through the Linux box to the IIS box behind it as though the Linux box wasn't even there. • Remove directory from URL IIS 7.5

  I've tried to find a solution to this and found some guides out there but none seem to work. I have the following URL - http://www.mysite.com/aboutus.html However there are some other sites which link to my old hosted site and point to http://www.mysite.com/nw/aboutus.html. My issue here is trying to remove the 'nw' directory from the URL's. • System occasionally hangs boot process with SLES 11

  I have several (new) systems on which I had to install SLES11 on. However, after a few (though not every) reboots, the system hangs during the boot sequence. It will only continue after I physically press a key on the keyboard. • Hibernate speed, and hard drive temperature

  My computer is taking in the region of 4 minutes or so, to hibernate 4GB of RAM. Also, resting my hand on the top of it is rather hot to the touch, so I ran CrystalDisk Info and that is reporting a temperature of 49 degrees C. I It's a Western Digital 5400 rpm drive, I've had it in the laptop since I bought it for most of the 2.75 years I've had it. Power on Count is 1219 Power on Hours is 3940 hours Boot up time is quicker than resuming from hibernate, too. Is there anything I can / should check ? Advice is greatly appreciated.

• Authentication issues setting up iRedMail on Debian

  I'm setting up an exchange server using iRedMail. Following the official iRedMail installation guide (http://www.iredmail.org/install_iredmail_on_debian.html) and the Digital Ocean guide (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-iredmail-on-ubuntu-12-04-x64) I was able to install iRedMail without any problems, so I have all the services up and running. I can configure domains and emails using iRedAdmin BUT I have problem both sending and receiving email, what I get from Roundcube is 'Authentication error' when trying to send an email. Also I can't receive anything. I also tried to connect to the mx server using telnet, it connects, but after the STARTTLS command, when I start to write "MAIL FROM:" the connection is lost. Something in the configuration is not working (at the moment I have the configuration written by the iRedMail installation) but I do not know where, I hope someone can enlight me! Thank you
