• Monitor for HD video editing

  I have been researching for days and nights on a good monitor to buy for a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 2600 XT (256mb). It will be used extensively for HD video editing (1080p) and photo editing, and likely also digital/3D animation next year(a lot of FCP + CS4). I am a student, so money is a little bit of an issue, but I want something that I'll be able to use semi-professionally after I'm done school, and am willing to finance something if it is worth the cost. I'm HOPING for something under $1000 though. The IPS Ultrasharps from Dell seem to be getting good reviews from other video editors. Accurate colour correction is a concern for me (hopefully something that covers Adobe spectrum), as well as a decent response time, HD resolutions, and DVI port. Also something with good gradient/definition in black areas, as this is difficult for editing on most LCDs. 1X1 pixel, brightness, good DVD playback etc. Hopefully this is not impossible to find for under $2000!

• Tool to fix video that's out of sync with audio?

  I'm looking for (preferably free) software for Windows 7 that will allow me to fix an AVI file that has audio out of sync with the video. I tried with Windows Live Movie Maker and VirtualDub and couldn't find out how to do it (if at all possible) on both of them. If any of those can help me, instructions for that would also be nice. Background: I have a RCA-to-USB capture card, which I'm using to transfer VHS casettes and stuff from a video camera to digital format. The problem is that the audio comes out heavily distorted. So instead I connected the audio out from the VCR directly to the computer's line in. This works, but the audio is out of sync, about half a second behind the video. I could spend time trying to fix this issuee, but I think it'll be easier to simply fix the video.

• Import exponetial fixed width format data into Excel

  I've received a bunch of text data files consiting of Lots of records (30K/file) of 3 fields each of 5-place numbers in exponential format: s0.nnnnnEsee (where s is +/-, n is a digit and ee is the exponent (always 2 digit). When I open the file in Notepad, the format is perfectly uniform throughout each file, but when I import it to Excel using Data|Import|Fixed Width, many of the data values get messed up, no matter what format (text, exponential, various custom tries) I assign to the cells. Looking at the Notepad version, it appears that leading + signs were replaced with a space in the data file, but the sign of the exponential is always there. This means that some fields begin with a space, and this appears to confuse the Excel import routine. I get the same result in Excel 2003 and 2007. I'm sure there's a straightforward solution (hopefully without a messy VBA routine), but I can't figure out what to try next. :-) To clarify (hopefully), here are some input records and the corresponding text input to Excel: Notepad Excel -0.11311E+01 0.10431E-04 0.27018E-03 -0.11311E 1.0431E-05 2.7018E-04 0.19608E+00-0.81414E-02-0.89553E-02 0.19608E -8.1414E-03 8.9553E-03 etc. Whoopee! • Can I get dual monitor support (2xDVI) from my (DVI+HDMI) graphics card?

  It seems that pure 2 x DVI dual head video cards are becoming rare. Most cards feature something like 1 x DVI plus 1 x HDMI plus 1 x VGA or some other interface. The idea seems to be that you can just use an HDMI <= DVI adapter. One result is that cards are seldom marked " 2 x DVI " anymore, but does this mean that they support simultaneous output on all interfaces? Are all cards dual head these days? Take Asus's nVidia cards for example, they routinely have 1 x DVI plus 1 x HDMI instead of 2 x DVI, so my question is, are these equivalent to a dual head DVI card, or is there some detail required for dual monitor support? I use dual-monitor stretched desktops for digital signage projects.

• Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA. • Windows 7 backup to 3TB Seagate external drive got 0x8078002A error [migrated]

  I'm using the Windows 7 backup and restore utility to create a system image and personal file backup to an external Seagate GoFlex 3TB disk. I got the following error: One of the backup files could not be created. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error code: 0x8078002A I searched all over the internet and found these two related discussions (discussion 1 and discussion 2). Note the 1st discussion is for a Western Digital drive, which seem to have a solution with the WD Quick Formatter tool. But I downloaded that software and it cannot detect my Seagate drive. The 2nd discussion is directly relevant but it does not offer a solution. I've spent days on this and am at a loss... Please help if you know what to do to make it work! Thank you!

• Does the mysql Client API Library version have to match the installed MySQL/Percona server version?

  I'm running Scientific Linux 6.3 (binary compaible with Redhat/CentOS/etc..) as a LAMP stack. I've installed Percona server and client v5.5 from the Percona yum repository. However when I run phpinfo() I notice that under the MySQL and mysqli sections, it lists the Client API Library version as 5.1.66, and not 5.5x. I'm guessing these need to match, at least to major versions, and I have no idea what the possible consequences of such a mismatch could be. Do I need to revert to Percona server and client v5.1? This is for a production environment so it needs to be right. I'd appreciate any input or experience people could offer. • Print driver installs failing

  All of the Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise machines in my organization are failing to install a good number of printer drivers that previously installed without issue. This only happens with printer drivers. And not with all printer drivers. Just some. Network drivers, video drivers, etc. have had no problems. The error that appears in Device Manager is "The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner." It appears to be signed fine though. It has an accompanying .CAT file and worked previously. If I take it off the domain, it installs fine. But it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Group Policy. Likewise, I removed a machine from the domain, manually set all of the domain Group Policy settings in gpedit.msc, and tried that way, and it worked fine. So it seems like the Group Policy settings are irrelevant. What other domain-related issue could be causing this though? Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks!

• Mac Grey/White Screen of Death

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• HDMI vs Component vs VGA vs DVI vs DisplayPort

  What are the pros and cons of each of these different display adapters and cables? From what I can understand, HDMI offers the ability to send audio along the same cable as well as the ability to do progressive scan. I've Googled but I can't seem to find any real answers. Why would someone care to run 1280x1024 over HDMI or DVI instead of VGA? What about component? All I hear is one is digital and one is analog, but I can't find what that means from a feature/benefit stand point.

• .vob to h.264 MP4 Files - Worth The Effort?

  When I was doing the converting to digital format a while back I chose .VOB due to no quality loss. However recently I have been informed of this h.264 compression method. Time is not an issue here, I don't mind waiting for conversions etc. I also understand that any sort of compression will reduce quality. To test I converted a 4GB .VOB to a .mp4 using h264 in handbrake and the quality loss was very very very hard to notice. From what I have understood through research Space = .mp4(h.264) Quality = .Vob Playback = Both equally supported? But these concerns have yet to be answered: My comparison was done on a computer monitor, would the quality loss be substantially noticable if I purchased a 50 inch TV in the future? Is this type of file highly supported? (I don't want to experience incompatible players) What other issues could a conversion of files such as this cause in the future?

• Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8? [migrated]

  Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

  Hi all, I'm struggling with something in FFMpeg at the moment... I'm trying to make DNxHD 1080p/24, 36Mb/s MXF files from a sequence of PNG files. My current command-line is: ffmpeg -y -f image2 -i /tmp/temp.%04d.png -s 1920x1080 -r 24 -vcodec dnxhd -f mxf -pix_fmt rgb32 -b 36Mb /tmp/temp.mxf To which ffmpeg gives me the output: Input #0, image2, from '/tmp/temp.%04d.png': Duration: 00:00:01.60, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0.0: Video: png, rgb32, 1920x1080, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc Output #0, mxf, to '/tmp/temp.mxf': Stream #0.0: Video: dnxhd, yuv422p, 1920x1080, q=2-31, 36000 kb/s, 90k tbn, 24 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 [mxf @ 0x1005800]unsupported video frame rate Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?) There are a few things in here that concern me: The output stream is insisting on being yuv422p, which doesn't support alpha. 24fps is an unsupported video frame rate? I've tried 23.976 too, and get the same thing. • Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• My External USB drive stops after reading some data

  I had the external USB 3.0 western Digital My Book essential 3TB drive. I had loto of data on it. Suddenlt when i start copying data from it then after reading 20GB or so data then i get error that system can't read from the location. I have to turn the uSB power off , disconnect it and then again connect it. so i have to trnasfer the data in small chunks like 20Gb , 30GB etc. I have n ow transferred all the data but i want to know that is hard disk gone or it can be fixed or its something windows fault not HD fault

• Quiet Sound while recording using the "Stereo Mix" option on Windows XP.

  I'm trying to record some of my work, and the video capture program I'm using works fine. It's HyperCam2, and since it's not really professional, I don't care about that little thing in the corner. Anyways, If I check the record sound option and put it on the highest quality, and I want it to record the sounds playing from my computer, I have it record the "Stereo Mix" setting. However, after a quick test, I saw that even though my computer was at max volume, the recorded sound was very quiet, almost inaudible. Thinking it was just HyperCam, I downloaded Audacity, and only met similar results. While I'm not entirely savvy with hardware, I BELIEVE this to be my soundcard: SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? • mod_rewrite REQUEST_FILENAME doesn't contain absolute path

  I have a problem with a file test operation in a mod_rewrite RewriteCond entry which is testing whether %{REQUEST_FILENAME} exists. It seems that rather than %{REQUEST_FILENAME} being an absolute path, I'm getting a path which is rooted at the DocumentRoot instead. Configuration I have this inside a <VirtualHost> block in my apache 2.2.9 configuration: RewriteEngine on RewriteLog /tmp/rewrite.log RewriteLogLevel 5 #push virtually everything through our dispatcher script RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^/([^/]*)/?([^/]*) /dispatch.php?_c=$1&_m=$2 [qsa,L] Diagnostics attempted That rule is a common enough idiom for routing requests for non-existent files or directories through a script. Trouble is, it's firing even if a file does exist. If I remove the rule, I can request normal files just fine.   A Windows Server 2003 R2 has the following hard disk configuration: - 3 internal hard disks attached to a 3Ware unit, configured in Raid 1 + spare unit - 3 external USB backup disks: 2 Verbatim 1TB (Samsung HD103SI) + 1 Western Digital 1TB (WD10EADS) The server runs 365 days per year, h24, however: - at daytime the server/user usage is limited to the internal hard disks - at nighttime there's no user usage, apart from scheduled maintenance tasks, basically the Server will be idle from 7PM to 8AM. apart from nighly backups (few hours). I was wondering if: (a) it makes any sense let Windows manage power savings, allowing disks to spin down accordingly, ** OR** let the disks stay awlays-on, to avoid permature wearing, due to continuous spin up/down (b) leave internal disks always on, and force external disks to power down while idle (this requires third party tools, such as Verbatim's Green button utility) Your thoughts?

• How to recover broken MJPEG AVI file after a camera crash

  I was recording a video when my KODAK EASYSHARE M531 Digital Camera fell to the ground and turned off. When i turned it on nothing happened to the camera but the video file is somehow broken. Obviously the camera did not have time to convert and close it properly. $file myvid.avi myvid.AVI: data where it should be: another_vid.AVI: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 640 x 480, ~30 fps, video: Motion JPEG, audio: uLaw (stereo, 12000 Hz)` I would like to fix my video which I believe needs to be converted to AVI. Any idea? VLC does not play the file and returns: could not determine type of stream

• Archive Recorded Show from DVR

  IF I have an AT&T U-Verse DVR, is there a way to copy the information off the DVR to an PC for Archiving/burning to a DVD? I know that I could connect the A/V outs on the DVR to the A/V inputs on a DVD Recorder, or to a capture card on a PC, and Play the show, and record in real-time on the DVD or PC, but if the show is say a World Cup Game, this would take 2-3 hours per. My thought is that the DVR is just a HardDrive, and the files have to be stored in an digital format, it should be possible to do a copy of some sort. I'm currently recording all of the WC games, but if I don't watch them right away, I'm concerned that I will push other programming that the rest of the family has recorded out, making me unpopular at home. Note, I'm talking about archiving for personal use, not redistribution or anything.

• What could cause Vista machines to degrade in performance?

  We have installed several machines running Windows Vista at a client site. These machines run the same set of applications each day and are not operated with by any user. They mainly run a 3D application for digital signage purposes. After a few months I noticed that several machines suffer from really bad stuttering. The performance is unacceptable. At first I figured it was faulty hardware. But after putting a fresh image on them, they run perfectly fine again. These are Core i7 machines with GTX 280 graphics adapters. They should be able to handle the workload without any trouble (and they do, at least for a while). I really have no idea how to track down the source of this issue. Especially since not all of the machines display the same issue.
