• How do you parse text in Ruby on Rails and add classes to specific parts of it?

  I am a Rails novice and I'm creating an application that I'd love some help on. The app is for social reading. It enables a user to highlight a passage from a text then have that passage saved and bolded into the view for later reading by anyone else. I have no problem creating an if statement on whether a certain string of text is in a passage but how do I add a class to that string and have a group of these passages absorbed back into the view. Any strategic advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Algorithm design: can you provide a solution to the multiple knapsack problem?

  I am looking for a pseudo-code solution to what is effectively the Multiple Knapsack Problem (optimisation statement is halfway down the page). I think this problem is NP Complete so the solution doesn't need to be optimal, rather if it is fairly efficient and easily implemented that would be good. The problem is this: I have many work items, with each taking a different (but fixed and known) amount of time to complete. I need to divide these work items into groups so as to have the smallest number of groups (ideally), with each group of work items taking no longer than a given total threshold - say 1 hour. I am flexible about the threshold - it doesnt need to be rigidly applied, though should be close. My idea was to allocate work items into bins where each bin represents 90% of the threshold, 80%, 70% and so on. I could then match items that take 90% to those that take 10%, and so on. Any better ideas?

If not, I want to return an error message. How can this be done with Cursors at all? Are nested cursors the solution to this? • Creating a video chat application for drupal site

  I am trying to write an application for website powered by drupal, basically i would like to create an application only authenticated users are able to use, and users are only allowed to connect with members of the opposite group they are a member of. I have been learning flash builder 4 and learning the basics of actionscript but I am still pretty new to Flash and Flex development. I would like to users to connect using the Adobe Stratus 2 protocol and if possible by authentication on existing site and using membership data from existing mysql database. If anyone could give me a nudge in the right direction on how I should go about creating this application or the next steps i should take, it would be greatly appreciated.

• Handling user security scope with nHibernate or other ORM

  How should one handle the situation where you may need to filter by a group of users. Here is the scenario. I have an administrator role in my company. I should be able to see all the data belonging to me plus all the other users who I have control over. A plain old user however should only be able to access their own data. If you are writing regular sql statements then you can have a security table with every user and who they have access too but i'm not sure how to handle this situation in the OO and ORM world. Any one dealt with this scenario in a web application using an ORM? Would love to hear your thoughts!

  After looking at how to count the occurrences of distinct values in a field, I am wondering how to count the occurrences of each distinct value if the distinct values are known (or enumerated). For example, if I have a simple table - TrafficLight Colour ------------ ------ 1 Red 2 Amber 3 Red 4 Red 5 Green 6 Green where one column (in this case Colour) has known (or enumerated) distinct values, how could I return the count for each colour as a separate value, rather than as an array, as in the linked example. To return an array with a count of each colour (using the same method as in the linked example), the query would be something like SELECT Colour COUNT(*) AS ColourCount FROM TrafficLights GROUP BY Colour, and return an array - Colour ColourCount ------ ----------- Red 3 Amber 1 Green 2 What I would like to do is to return the count for each Colour AS a separate total (e.g. RedCount). How can I do this?

  I've a report which shows five different activity codes. I'd like to sum all like codes and place a total for each of the 5 activity codes in a group footer. I have it working for one activity code, but would like to write a formula which will look for all five and total each. This is what I have: (if {@activitycode_id}= "Not Ready" then {iActivityCodeStat.ActivityTime}else 0) What is the proper syntax to add additional ifs into one formula? • Mysql query - problem with order by

  I'm using two tables for selecting messages between users. Table "messages" for recording the messages and table "members" for checking users data (are they activ or deleted). This query working fine. What I need to do is list the received messsages order by last received. I tried to do with "ORDER BY messages.id DESC" at the end of this query but it didn't work. All messages are listed from first received. This is the mysql join table query that I'm using: sql = "select distinct messages.fromid, messages.readed, messages.fromid, messages.toid, members.id as pid From messages Inner Join members on members.id = messages.fromid Where messages.toid = ".$mid." • Best way to order menu items injected by an IoC/plugin Framework

  One of the common things I've seen done in applications built on IoC/plugin frameworks is to add commands to menus or toolbars from the dynamically loaded plugins. For example, the application's default plugins supply actions like "New, Open, Save" that show up in the context menu for a certain item in the workspace. A new plugin may add "Mail, Post, Encrypt" commands, but where do those commands show up in relation to "New, Open, Save"? How can the application that is loading components through IoC impose order on the items that get injected? Does it require metadata from the plugins that give a hint on how to group or order the items? Does it use a config file of previously known menu names (or ids) to define the order (seems a little weak to me)? Or are "unknown" plugins treated as second class citizens and always get dumped into sub menus? Something I've never even imagined (which I'm hoping to see in the answers)

The content admin team would like to be able to edit stores and their types in bulk. Is there a simple way to implement Store.item_types in list_editable which also allows adding new records, similar to horizontal_filter? If not, is there a straightforward guide that shows how to implement a custom list_editable template? I've been Googling but haven't been able to come up with anything. Also, if there is a simpler or better way to set up these models that would make this easier to implement, feel free to comment.

In most places where I display the tags I do so by grouping by name. @group_counts = current_user.groups.count(:group => :name, :order => 'count_all DESC') Is there a way to disregard capitalization. For instance I have two different records returned for Push press and Push Press.

• Issue with plotting daily data using ggplot

  I tried to plot daily data from 9 variables in ggplot, but the graph I get cannot handle the date variable properly. The x axis is unreadable and its impossible to read the plot. I'm guessing there's an issue with the handling of dates. • Echoing a pseudo column value after a COUNT

  Hi Gang... Please don't beat me if this is elementary. I searched and found disjointed stuff relating to pseudo columns. Nothing spot on about what I need. Anyway... I have a table with some rows. Each record has a unique ID, an ID that relates to another entity and finally a comment that relates to that last entity. So, I want to COUNT these rows to basically find what entity has the most comments. Instead of me explaining the query, I'll print it SELECT entity_id, COUNT(*) AS amount FROM comments GROUP BY entity_id ORDER BY amount DESC The query does just what I want, but I want to echo the values from that pseudo column, 'amount' Can it be done, or should I use another method like mysql_num_rows? I want to select incoming hits (direction:1) and group by sites that are: from same ip and browser logged within 10 minutes of each other occured more than 4 times in 10 minutes. I'm not sure if above was clear enough. English is not my first language. Let me try to explain with an example. If site 1 gets 5 hits from same ip and browser with in 10 minutes after getting first unique hit from that ip and browser i want it to be included in the selection. Basically I am trying to find abusers.

  Hi guys.. The question im struggling with is this: i have a list of helicopter names in different charters and i need to find out WHICH helicopter has the least amount of charters booked. Once i find that out i need to ONLY display the one that has the least.   I have a Vote domain class from my grails application containing properties like article_id and note I want to HQL query the Vote domain class in order to retrieve the 5 best rated articles having at least 10 votes. I tried : SELECT v.article_id, avg(v.note), count(*) FROM vote v where count(*) >= 10 group by v.article_id order by avg(v.note) desc limit 5; But unfortunately the insertion of where count(*) >= 10 throws an error. • Validate an XML File Against Multiple Schema Definitions

  I'm trying to validate an XML file against a number of different schemas (apologies for the contrived example): a.xsd b.xsd c.xsd c.xsd in particular imports b.xsd and b.xsd imports a.xsd, using: <xs:include schemaLocation="b.xsd"/> I'm trying to do this via Xerces in the following manner: XMLSchemaFactory xmlSchemaFactory = new XMLSchemaFactory(); Schema schema = xmlSchemaFactory.newSchema(new StreamSource[] { new StreamSource(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("a.xsd"), "a.xsd"), new StreamSource(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("b.xsd"), "b.xsd"), new StreamSource(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("c.xsd"), "c.xsd")}); Validator validator = schema.newValidator(); validator.validate(new StreamSource(new StringReader(xmlContent))); but this is failing to import all three of the schemas correctly resulting in cannot resolve the name 'blah' to a(n) 'group' component. I've validated this successfully using Python, but having real problems with Java 6.0 and Xerces 2.8.1. Can anybody suggest what's going wrong here, or an easier approach to validate my XML documents?

• nHibernate Linq Projection

  I am using the version 1.0 release of Linq for nHibernate. When I run the following linq statements I receive the error not a single-length projection: Surname I can find very few references to this on the web and looking into the source it says it should never occur! ClientID is a Int type and Surname is a string.
